Re: backup/restore philosophy for Exchange

2002-11-21 Thread Del Hoobler
Neil,

Data Protection for Exchange version 5.1.5 contains
detailed instructions on doing mailbox level backup
and restore using a combination of ExMerge and the
ITSM BA client (with subfile backup).
It also contains sample versions of script files
and sample .INI files for setting this up.

Instead of me going into detail in this forum,
please obtain the 5.1.5 version and read the
BRICKBACK.DOC file that is included in the package.

Error validating inserts

2002-11-21 Thread Neil Dombrowski
Just found this in the ADSM FAQ. I am more confused than before. I
remember trying to install TDP for Exchange about a year ago, but we
never got it working at the time. We just installed again about a month
ago, does this mean that the previous install is trying to backup
Exchange? What does this mean?

ANRD smnode.c(5323): Error validating inserts for event 14995.
Seen when using the TDP for MS SQL to view data stored on the server by
a different level of that TDP. Backups made with TDP for MS SQL
Version 1 CANNOT be queried or restored using Version 2 nor can backups
made with Version 2 be queried or restored using Version 1: you must
keep TDP for MS SQL Version 1 for as long as you have Version 1 backups
that may need to be restored. See User's Guide topic "Version
Migration/Coexistence Considerations".

Re: backup/restore philosophy for Exchange

2002-11-21 Thread Graham Trigge
Neil,

Backup Exec (from at least v8.5) can backup individual mailboxes if the
Exchange Backup Agent has been added. This allows either the Information
Store to be backed up, or individual mailboxes, or both. As for the
Exchange TDP, I have never seen an option to backup individual mailboxes.
If we need to restore a mailbox, we restore the Exchange to separate
hardware and restore from this new server.

Re: Trouble with Optical Media 4GB or larger ...FLASH

2002-11-21 Thread TAZ

*
Attention:
Customers running Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) 5.1 using a TSM Server on
Windows NT or Windows 2000 and writing to optical platters that have a
capacity greater than 4Gb (4294967295 bytes) per side will not be able to
retrieve data. This includes 5.25", dual sided 9.1 GB optical media
written using HP 9100mx and Sony SMO-F561 optical drives. If you are not
using 9.1 GB optical media on Windows 2000 or NT server platform, you are
not affected by this problem.

Immediate Action Needed:

Customers should immediately stop storing data to 9.1GB optical media. To
do so, use the QUERY VOLUME command specifying the STATUS=FILLING option to
list volumes that are filling. For each 9.1GB volume listed, use the
UPDATE VOLUME command specifying the ACCESS=READONLY option. This will
allow any data currently on the media to be accessed while preventing any
further writes to the volume. For 9.1GB optical volumes that are not
assigned to a storage pool and are available for scratch selection, they
should be removed from the library using the CHECKOUT LIBVOLUME command.
This will prevent these volumes from being written to.

Depending on which type of optical media is being used, WORM or re-writable
(R/W) 9.1GB optical media, the symptoms of the problem may differ. Refer
to the appropriate section below for a description of the problem for your
particular media.

9.1GB WORM Optical Media Problem Description:

Customers running TSM 5.1 and above utilizing 9.1GB optical WORM media on
Windows operating systems will be affected by apar IC34980. TSM server
development has identified a problem in this environment when the media is
filled to or beyond 4GB's on each side. As a result, data written by TSM
beyond 4GB per side will not be readable.

When TSM writes data to 9.1GB WORM media, the following error is seen when
attempting to write past 4 GB on the first side of the platter:

ANR8302E I/O error on drive OPTDRIVE2 (opX.X.X.X)
(OP=TEST_READY, Error Number=1117, CC=415, KEY=08, ASC=92,
ASCQ=00,SENSE=F1.00.08.00.10.06.4C.0E.00.00.00.00.92.00.00.00.00.00.02.50.00
.00.,
Description=Attempted to overwrite written WORM media). Refer to Appendix
D in the 'Messages' manual for recommended action.

Following the error described above, TSM will update the volume's access to
READ-ONLY to prevent attempts to further write to the volume.

9.1GB Re-writable Optical Media Problem Description:

Customers running TSM 5.1 and above utilizing 9.1GB optical Re-writable
media on Windows operating systems will be affected by apar IC34980. TSM
server development has identified a problem in this environment when the
media is filled to or beyond 4GB's on each side. As a result, data written
by TSM beyond 4GB per side will not be readable.

When TSM writes data to 9.1GB R/W media, no errors are encountered until
the media is filled beyond 4GB's per side. Once this occurs, the position
of the next write is unchanged from it's current location. Subsequently,
any additional attempts to write data on the media beyond 4GB's occurs on
the same location of the media. TSM is unable to determine this error is
occurring and goes on until the media is filled on both sides. This
results in approximately 400M worth of data on each side (800MB total) that
may be lost.

Problem Resolution:

APAR IC34980 will enable TSM to write and read data correctly beyond 4GB's
per side without error. All 9.1GB optical media written by TSM must have
it's data moved to other media within the storage pool. Apply the ptf once
it is made available and perform the following these steps:

For each 9.1GB volume affected by this error:
Audit the volume using the AUDIT VOLUME FIX=NO command. This will mark
any unreadable files as damaged and display the name of the damaged
file. Perform a MOVE DATA command to move any undamaged files to other
media within the storage pool.
If backup copies were made from a storage pool other than the one
containing the damaged optical media, perform the RESTORE VOLUME command
to recover the damaged files.

If no backup copies were made, backup or archive the files again into
the TSM storage hierarchy via the TSM Backup/Archive client or TSM
Client API using the appropriate application. At this point, if there
are files that could not be moved, perform the DELETE VOLUME DISCARD=YES
command to remove any references to the damaged files. Re-writable media
can now be reused as scratch while WORM media should be removed from the
library and physically discarded.

The upcoming releases that contain the fix will be 5.1.5.3 and 5.1.6.
This will be available shortly.

I would like to thank Tivoli for releasing this information ASAP upon
discovery.

Re: TSM Server setup

2002-11-21 Thread Zlatko Krastev
What do you mean TSM only sees one - the TSM driver creates only one
mtX.X.X.X device, you have only one in "Query DRives" or have defined only
one path (server -> drive)?
Manual drives are just like other ones. If you assume something like "def
path manuallib srctype=server desttype=library
dev=LBserver_room.human_operator" the rest is just the same. If drives are
of same technology you can group them in "multi-head" library. If are
different each drive type must form separate library.
In your case:
- if the problem is with the driver, handle it as usual - check first
isn't Windows grabbing the drives before TSM driver.
- if configuration problem, check that you have 1 library in "q libr
", 4 drives in "q dr " and 4 paths (1 for each
drive) in "q path".

2002-11-21 Thread Zlatko Krastev
--> You can't restore the Novell server at the central site because it won't
be part of the Novell tree

I would argue against this.
- The server needs a connection to other servers to join the tree
during instalation process. If you have a connection (intended for TSM
backup) between the plant and the central site then you definitely have a
connection for NDS tree. And I suspect Master Replicas reside in the
central site so you will use LAN instead of WAN for NDS.
- you have the posibility to restore the NDS replicas on the new
server. Thus it will contain what the old one had. If the old one was part
of the tree new one ought to as well.
- maybe that Novell guru had bad experience with some other product.
Ask him can he perform that same restore using Novell tools. Later try to
explain that TSM client is using same operating system interface.

Subject:Novell bare-metal restore

Greetings,
I have a customer with a unique challenge. Maybe it's not, but it
seems to be to me because I am not a Novell guy. They are considering
implementing TSM in their environment to back up a bunch of Novell
servers that are out in remote plants with real slow links, like 256KBs.
The servers have sometimes 300-600MB of changed data a night. With
decent compression, we may be able to back them up overnight, since they
would permit 5pm to 8am as the acceptable backup window.
The challenge is when one server is replaced, either because it dies
or is replaced with new hardware. The Novell servers have about 40GB of
disk space, so there is no way they could restore across the slow link.
Our thinking is to restore the server to a server at the central
location where the TSM server is, so the restore could be accomplished
more quickly, then ship the restored server down to the remote site. My
customer's Novell guy says this won't work, because of the way Novell
trees work. You can't restore the Novell server at the central site
because it won't be part of the Novell tree(?!), and all the file
permissions and ownerships will be wrong.
Can somebody tell me what resources I should read to understand how
to do this, or can share with me your methodology to do a bare-metal
restore of a Novell server? I figure that surely by now a method has
been derived.
Thanks in advance,

John Schneider

Matt,

I had your problem often in the last year!

The first server I found that really solved the Problem is the newest one

hope that helps you out.. those system objects caused me major problems in

Cleanup backupgroups, system objects

2002-11-21 Thread Matt Simpson
We assumed we had the dreaded "system objects" problem because we
were running 4.2.2.0, we have a bunch of Windows clients, and our
database was growing at a rate that we didn't like.

So a couple of days ago, we upgraded to 4.2.3, and ran CLEANUP BACKUPGROUPS.
It didn't seem to accomplish anything. It finshed fairly quickly,
compared to some of the reports I've read here, and finished with the
message:

ANR4730I CLEANUP BACKUPGROUPS evaluated 28729 groups and deleted 0
orphan groups with 0 group
members deleted with completion state 'FINISHED'.

Somebody on this list suggested using the command
QUERY OCC * "SYSTEM OBJECT"

to get an idea of how bad the problem was. I tried that, before and
after the upgrade, and got the same result: zip

tsm: UKCCSERVER1>QUERY OCC * "SYSTEM OBJECT"
ANR2034E QUERY OCCUPANCY: No match found using this criteria.
ANS8001I Return code 11.

This doesn't seem to make sense to me, because if I pick a client at
random and issue a query occ for that client, I see some system
object filespaces.

I'll 2nd that on the cleaner blocks. We had many problems with media
errors until we *made* the CE remove the blocks. He shook his head and
said "Alright, it's your system"..Media errors just about vanished.

In 6 years of 3494 with 3490e and 3590 drives, I have only had 5 that were
destoryed by the drives. Now if you want to count the number tapes
destroyed by operatorswell, that's a different story!

Make sure IBM has removed the cleaner blocks from the drives.
If tapes are being eaten, I'd say it is probably poorly adjusted pressures
in the drive somewhere or something isn't in proper alignment BUT I'm NOT
an
IBM technician so I really shouldn't say...
In 7 years across 7 ATL's with 7 year old tapes (for the most part) we are
still going strong !
In all we've only lost somewhere between 10-15 tapes to total destruction
(so 1-2 a year out of some 15,000)

We have all four drives chewing up tapes on regular intervals. To make a
rough estimate I would say that this happens once or sometimes twice a
month and all drives are effected in the same way. I have no idea if this
is the normal wear due to lots of mounts.
We always check out the tape which caused the problem and in most cases we
have a technician change parts of the drive or even the whole drive.
The age of our tapes is different. We exchanged a lot of them to new ones,
but also still have tapes which are 3, maybe 4 years old.

Re: Trouble restoring SQL database

Ken,

The SQL Server is preventing the restore from completing
without telling you why. I wonder if there is a missing
backup or the differential is being applied to the
wrong version of the backup. If you cannot get it to work for you,
please call support so documentation can be obtained
that will help in diagnosing this issue.
They will need the SQL Server logs for the restore as well
as the for the time period when the original backup was taken.
They will also need the VDI log... and the TDP for SQL logs
for the time period also.

Thanks,

You can have one drive going wrong. I can even imagine two can have
problems simultaneously. But if all four together have a problem it is
hard to believe. Did your IBM CE verified the robot. Ask for same problem
re-open instead of open as new problem. As Wanda said shout, demand,
escalate the problem. You've paid a pile of money for those drives they
MUST work, period. Upgrade may help and may not, who will have to explain
why you spent another pile of money for upgrade.

Re: Switching Collocation on/off

2002-11-21 Thread Prather, Wanda
It's OK to switch collocation on/off.

The setting only affects data that TSM is currently WRITING to tape.

If you turn collocation OFF, then any migration, move volume, or reclaim
tasks will write to an available tape in FILLING status, and as you guessed,
the "FILLING" tapes will all gradually fill up.

If you turn collocation back ON, then any migration, move volume, or reclaim
tasks will try to collocate the data they are writing. That is, if the
process is moving data for CLIENT1, and there is a tape in FILLING status
that already contains data for CLIENT1, the process will mount and use that
tape. OTHERWISE it will call for a SCRATCH tape, assuming you haven't
reached MAXSCRATCH limit for the storage pool. If you have already reached
the MAXSCRATCH limit for the storage pool, it looks for any existing tape in
FILLING status (I think it uses the least-full one, but I'm not sure about
that.)

Turning collocation back ON doesn't have any effect on data from past
backups that is not collocated, it just sits where it is on the existing
tapes. However, your pool should eventually get (mostly) collocated again
over time by RECLAIM.

I have collocation switched on our onsite tapepool at the moment, what are
the effects of switching this setting on and off.

I'm guessing that when switched off the volumes that are 'filling' will be
eventually used to 100%?

What will be the effects of then switching collocation back on? Will new
volumes only then be used in the library for new backups?
Is data from past backups (from un-collocated backups) moved onto new
tapes or are only new backups set to collocate?

Ken,

The SQL Server will not allow this backup to be
applied to the previous full backup you restored.
In other words, SQL Server is rejecting this
restore attempt.

Did you specify /RECOVERY=NO on the full restore
(if using the command-line interface)?
Or un-check the Recovery checkbox in the GUI on the
full restore if you are doing the restores
manually one at a time?

Take a look at the SQL Server log and the
VDI error log to see if it gives you any
additional information. Also, check the
Microsoft knowledge base for other ideas.

Re: NetWare 6 Cluster and Web Client

2002-11-21 Thread Mark Humphrey
The solution for our problem was to load an additional instance of DSMCAD
using the cluster resource DSM.OPT file.

Ie. We use DSMCAD to backup SYS: and NDS. It's DSM.OPT file is located
on volume SYS:
DSMC is being used to back up the cluster volumes. It's DSM.OPT is on
volume APPS. We had to specify a different HTTPPort (in our case 1583) in
this DSM.OPT and re-entrantly load DSMCAD it.

Re: netware client on aix tsm server

2002-11-21 Thread Neil Bowen
Hello

Just to add my two-pennorth (3 cents US). The default protocol for
Netware 5.1 is TCP/IP and it will have been installed on the server even
if it's not configured (unlikely). Inetcfg, however, isn't a GUI but its
pretty easy to follow the menus - enable the IP protocol and bind to the
board then reinitialize the system and you wont even have to bring the
server down.

We use IP for backing up our 4.x Netware servers - where the default is
IPX - as well as our 5 and 6 servers without any problems. There's no
need to do anything clever - just install and configure IP.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 21/11/02 14:22:16 >>>
Hi

If you have a Netware 5.1 server, there shouldn't be any problems
having
the Netware talk through TCPIP. All you have to do is run inetcfg(load

inetcfg) from the command line on the netware server. This will bring
up a
graphical interface were you can configure TCP/IP.

Only problem would be if not TCP/IP is installed. This is however a
fairly
easy installation, which is done through nwconfig(load nwconfig). Here
you
can select to install netware products and drivers, such as TCP/IP.

AIX natively doesn't speak IPX. However, I'm uncertain whether or not
there are any 3rd party products which can apply IPX functionality to
AIX,
such as FastConnect or any other product.

Easiest solution would be to enable TCP/IP on Netware.

hi all,

A cotumer of ours wants a netware 5.1 server in our backup schedule.
This client doesnt support tcp/ip only ipxspx. I did see an ipxsocket
available in server options, but according to the costumer the server
returnes with an "invalid ipx adress" when starting the client.
Now this costumer had netware installed by another party 4 years ago

doesnt know anything about handling the OS itself, nor do I. So our
only
option is to make the tsm-server available to the ipx protocol. As far

I
know aix (4.3.2) doesnt understand ipx. My question: how do I make aix
understand ipx? or how do i make netware understand tcpip?

thnx a lot,

Re: scheduler fails on tdp command scripts (still drives me nuts ) - My Way!

2002-11-21 Thread Tony Morgan
Hi there! No Nuts... Just the fruits of my labour!

This is how I do it on NT... it's a daily restore, but the principle is the
same.
Note the "exit 0" to set "errorlevel" to 0 and the "Progra~1" (no spaces).
The first file calls the second, output is redirected to a logfile with
timestamps.
Waitfor is an NT resource kit command.
"prompt $g" just makes the logfile less clutered.
2 copies of the log are retained.
Simple but effective!

Does this client software have the ability to run a scheduler so the TSM

2002-11-21 Thread Michel Engels
Koen,

Maybe you shuold specify where the script (bkdbppim.scr) resides. In the RMAN
command you only specify the name of the script not the path. Perhaps it is
better to precede the command with a pushd %ora_script_dir% and follow the RMAN
with a popd like this

pushd %ora_script_dir%

%ora_exe% target system/manager@ppim rcvcat rman_db1/rman_db1@orcl cmdfile
bkdbppim.scr msglog bkdbppim.log

popd

2002-11-21 Thread Sias Dealy
Michelle,

Sometime ago, I think that someone mention on this board that
TSM stop supporting IPXSPX communication.
I want to say that TSM 4.1 was the last version that could use
IPXSPX. I could be wrong on this.

I know that for TSM 4.2 the valid communication method is HTTP,
TCPIP, SNMP and shared memory.

If you run it from the command line, despite the fact that it succeeds, what
errorlevel does your script exit with? What errorlevel does your

Koen,

OK, I'm going to step up and speak out. I had two similar problems not too
long ago, and I'm really embarrassed about the mistakes that were made.

The first was that when setting up the schedule I mistakenly put the path

The second one took about a week, the script would run error free from the

I knew the problem just had to be permissions or a client issue. I checked
and changed permissions at the client, and within SQL. I upgraded to the
latest TDP for SQL, still RC=1. I searched the archives but ANS1512E and
RC=1 are WAY TOO generic (hint, hint IBM'ers) so I decided not to post or
call it in since there was really no emergency since it would run OK
manually. Just as you stated "drives me nuts".

So I decided to break it down and go one step at a time, that's when I
spotted on the Objects line, my node name instead of the server name for
the
path. ***I put my head down in shame***

\\servername_sql\c$\progra~1\tivoli\tsm\tdpsql\sqlfull.cmd

All is well now. Not to proud about that one, but hope it may help others.

Koen,

How do you *know* the script isn't running?
From the schedule log... it appears that it is.
And something within the script is failing
and reflecting the RC=3.
Add some
  echo Doing x >> C:\TEMP\SCRIPT.OUT
statements to your script to find out for sure
if it is running and where it might be failing.
(Change "" to be what the script is doing at
the time.)

Thanks,

Re: netware client on aix tsm server

2002-11-21 Thread David Longo
I know AIX 4.3.3 supports IPX - barely. I set it up for a netware
client a year or so ago that ONLY had IPX. However your TSM would
be limitation, you didn't mention which version. As of TSM server
4.2,
the TSM SERVER doesn't support IPX, I believe the client still did
though.

If you can't get TCPIP on client, let me know and I'll dig up the info
on
how to setup IPX on AIX.

hi all,

A cotumer of ours wants a netware 5.1 server in our backup schedule.
This client doesnt support tcp/ip only ipxspx. I did see an ipxsockeReceived: from
HealthFirst-MTA by hfgwise1-dmz.health-first
available in server options, but according to the costumer the server
returnes with an "invalid ipx adress" when starting the client.
Now this costumer had netware installed by another party 4 years ago
and
doesnt know anything about handling the OS itself, nor do I. So our
only
option is to make the tsm-server available to the ipx protocol. As far
as I
know aix (4.3.2) doesnt understand ipx. My question: how do I make aix
understand ipx? or how do i make netware understand tcpip?

thnx a lot,

Mi©helle

latest TDP for SQL, still RC=1. I searched the archives but ANS1512E and
RC=1 are WAY TOO generic (hint, hint IBM'ers) so I decided not to post or
call it in since there was really no emergency since it would run OK
manually. Just as you stated "drives me nuts".

So I decided to break it down and go one step at a time, that's when I
spotted on the Objects line, my node name instead of the server name for the
path. ***I put my head down in shame***

\\servername_sql\c$\progra~1\tivoli\tsm\tdpsql\sqlfull.cmd

All is well now. Not to proud about that one, but hope it may help others.

Re: netware client on aix tsm server

2002-11-21 Thread Daniel Sparrman
Hi

If you have a Netware 5.1 server, there shouldn't be any problems having
the Netware talk through TCPIP. All you have to do is run inetcfg(load
inetcfg) from the command line on the netware server. This will bring up a
graphical interface were you can configure TCP/IP.

Only problem would be if not TCP/IP is installed. This is however a fairly
easy installation, which is done through nwconfig(load nwconfig). Here you
can select to install netware products and drivers, such as TCP/IP.

AIX natively doesn't speak IPX. However, I'm uncertain whether or not
there are any 3rd party products which can apply IPX functionality to AIX,
such as FastConnect or any other product.

Easiest solution would be to enable TCP/IP on Netware.

Best Regards

Daniel Sparrman

Subject:netware client on aix tsm server

hi all,

A cotumer of ours wants a netware 5.1 server in our backup schedule.
This client doesnt support tcp/ip only ipxspx. I did see an ipxsocket
available in server options, but according to the costumer the server
returnes with an "invalid ipx adress" when starting the client.
Now this costumer had netware installed by another party 4 years ago and
doesnt know anything about handling the OS itself, nor do I. So our only
option is to make the tsm-server available to the ipx protocol. As far as
I
know aix (4.3.2) doesnt understand ipx. My question: how do I make aix
understand ipx? or how do i make netware understand tcpip?

thnx a lot,

Re: scheduler fails on tdp command scripts (still drives me nuts )

2002-11-21 Thread Del Hoobler
Koen,

How do you *know* the script isn't running?
>From the schedule log... it appears that it is.
And something within the script is failing
and reflecting the RC=3.
Add some
  echo Doing x >> C:\TEMP\SCRIPT.OUT
statements to your script to find out for sure
if it is running and where it might be failing.
(Change "" to be what the script is doing at
the time.)

Re: Trouble restoring SQL database

2002-11-21 Thread Del Hoobler

Thanks,

Del

The scheduler does not run the script.

I see some brief communcation with the tsm server:

Koen,

The first thing you should check is to make sure the
command script is even being run.
A good way to test this is to put a command in
script that generates some type of output on
the local machine that you can check. That way
you can see if the script is even being executed.
For example:DIR C:\TEMP > C:\TEMP\TEST.OUT.
If, after the schedule runs, the "TEST.OUT" file
is not generated, then the script is not even
being run and the problem is probably with the
definition of the schedule.
If that is the case...

Are you specifying the full path name to the script
in the objects field of the defined schedule?

Are there spaces in the path name? If there are,
you may have to use double quotes and single quotes
around the parameter when defining the "objects=xxx" option.
For example:

   OBJECTS='"C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\domino\dominc.cmd"'

Notice the two sets of quotes, a set of single quotes
and a set of double quotes.

Thanks,

Del

Look in www.redbooks.ibm.com for the redbook about using TSM to back up
databases. It's got everything you need to know.

2002-11-21 Thread Michel Engels
Koen,

Did you try the command or script in a DOS-box. If yes make sure you can read
the output of the script or command via a log. Do this by adding a ">
script.out" to your command only this must itself be coded in a script because
otherwise the scheduler would not understand the complete command.

Hope this helps,

Re: tape-to-tape performance

2002-11-21 Thread Cook, Dwight E
As much of a performance hit as you want !
With about every TSM task (straight backups via "resourceutilization" or
with tdp/r3 with the number of concurrent sessions, etc...) you can tune how
busy TSM will keep your system.
We have our production boxes at one site and our disaster recovery center
miles away, our TSM server(s) are located at the DR site, we have to
compress all client data to send it across the OC12 between the sites. For
example, we can crank up TSM activities to suck up 90% of 20 processors (out
of 32) on a Sun E10K by using client compression...
So an OC12 is 622 Mb/sec or roughly 273 GB/hr, on a nightly basis we see it
running somewhere between 175-200 GB/hr so we still have about 1/3 capacity
BUT we see 3.8/1 compression of most data base data so we are actually
moving somewhere around 760 GB/hr of client filespace and I'd hate to be
pay'n for an OC24 (or more) between the sites (if we could even get it) !

One view is that if you beef up the processors to assist in backup, the end
results to the user community is increased performance during their
production use ;-) It's a (god I hat to say this) "WIN ! WIN ! situation...
Just remind management that today they are more than ever likely to have to
depend on their DR !

thanks for that insight. i forgot to mention we are running fibre channel
and not scsi drives. yes, the data is must have... it is all production data
and is being copied for DRM.

how much of a performance hit will it take to turn compression on at the
client level?

Is 1.6 TB the amount of "must have/critical" information ?
and is that already compressed ?
Knowing each tape mount runs about 90 seconds, any way to reduce tape mounts
will speed up copies.
If you have collocation on, turning it off ~could~ help... and collocation
can/is set on both primary pools and copy pools.
Now if the data isn't compressed by the client the data is uncompressed at
the drive, moved through the processor as ~full size~ data, then
recompressed at the destination drive. If your clients have the horsepower,
turn on client compression, that way not so much data is moved across the
processor's buss.
Don't daisy chain any of your 3590's if they are older scsi.
You might be able to reduce your data down if you force the application
owners to review their required CRITICAL/MUST HAVE data and send it to
isolated pools for copies to take offsite.

just some thoughts...

we run a 3494 tape library with 3590 tape drives. after our backup are
finished, we run a backup stgpool to a copy pool on about 1.6TB of data. as
you can imagine, even with 8 drives this takes some time. are there any
server, device or other parameters we can tune to improve the tape-to-tape
performance?

2002-11-21 Thread Koen Willems
Dear Listers,

Working on:

TSM 5.1.5 server and client
TDP oracle 2.1.1. (NT) tdp oracle 2.2.1. (W2K)
I use the latest tdp sql and exchange. (W2K)

When isntalling a scheduler for my TDP with dsmcutil and defining a schedule
on the server with action command and object the command script
all looks fine.

The dsmched.log shows a new time slot and when I check on the server I get a
succes when entering q ev * *.

The thing is that my backup has failed with. error 1 or 4.

I already tried different user accounts. But this does not help...

Re: 3590 Tape Drives

2002-11-21 Thread Cook, Dwight E
Make sure IBM has removed the cleaner blocks from the drives.
If tapes are being eaten, I'd say it is probably poorly adjusted pressures
in the drive somewhere or something isn't in proper alignment BUT I'm NOT an
IBM technician so I really shouldn't say...
