Re: Restoring RMAN data onto different server

2003-02-24 Thread Rodney clark
There is a clone functionality in RMAN I think it would be quite easy to get
RMAN to restore a database on a different system. the trivky bit is getting
TDP to act like the other node I guess you would need to change the dsm.sys
node name and rerun the password program. Then it's restore database.
Failing that you can always restore the database to an alternate directory
on the original system and then copy it over to the other system.

Might be a bit hard if it's areally large database.

Incremental DB backup slow

2003-02-24 Thread Gerhard Rentschler
Hello,
I just watched a incremental db backup running. My db is 81 GB in size of
which about 70 GB are used. The log is set to rollforward mode and about 7,5
GB in size. At the moment the backup started the log usage was 85% with 37
MB data in the db changed. From the start of the process until the counters
in the q proc output increased it took about 10 minutes. The whole process
took 20 minutes compared to 60 minutes for a full db backup. I wish it were
faster. Has anyone had similar experiences?
The backup is going to 3590E tapes via SCSI. The db is on SSA, the log on a
internal harddisk. The server is a RS/6000 H70 with AIX 4.3.3, TSM is
5.1.6.2 since this morning. But with 5.1.1.6 it was the same.

 Rizwan,

RC=418 means there was a problem with the TSM API.

Take a look at the TSM Server activity log to see
why it terminated the sessions. It could be that
the volumes were not available or there were not
enough mountpounts defined to satisfy the request.
... Or MAXNUMMP was not set high enough to fulfill
 the multiple stripe restore request.

If you cannot figure out what the problem is,
 please calll IBM support.

Re: FW: TDP SQL Restore Error

2003-02-24 Thread Del Hoobler
Rizwan,

This means that some of the data objects needed for the restore
cannot be found in the TSM Server database. If the restore
worked prior to the migration to tape, the backup must
have been good. And so, something must have happened
that caused some of those objects to be deleted or corrupted.
(for example, a bad tape, etc.)

If you are trying to get this process working, I would
start with a single stripe backup, let it migrate to tape,
and then try the restore. Make sure it works with
a single stripe to verify the procedure, then increase
the stripes to make sure your setup is correct.

If you continue to have problems, please call IBM support.
Deleted objects are serious business and indicate
that something else is going wrong with your TSM Server.

Thanks,

Del

OK .. but even if I copy the diskpool and tapepool to a copypool,
isn't there some client data that never gets migrated to the
diskpool? I need a solution that allows me to recover the data if the
client machine gets burned up. Will the HSM pools contain all the
necessary directory structure information to rebuild the client data?
I need to read the manuals some more, but from what I've been told,
the answer is No.
- management class for HSM client has parameter migrequiresbkup
(defaulting to yes). Thus if MIGDESTination of the class and DESTination
of the backup copygroup point to different pools - you again can have two
copies. Plus the copypool one can be even more.
Yes, I can have to copies; the migration copy and the backup copy.
But they'll both be in a primary storage pool. True, creating the
copy pool gives me even more. But the objective is not to see how
MANY copies of the data I can create; it's to see how FEW I can
create and still have the ability to completely restore the client
from the offsite tapes.
- usage of HSM client does not prevent filesystem to be backed up using
B/A client.
True. But again, we're trying to keep the total number of backups to
a minimum. We have to pay for tapes.
How afterwards off-site tape management is to be done is just another
story solvable in many ways - through DRM, AutoVault, TSMManager, etc.
Well, maybe it's just another story; but the answer to that story has
a major impact on the first story. EG DRM requires the use of
copypools to move tapes offsite. I've been told AutoVault does not,
so that's something I need to look at. But that opens up some more
questions (aside from the cost, how is reclamation of offsite tapes
done, etc)

OK, but even if I force all files to migrate, does the migration pool
contain enough info about the client directory structure to allow me
to restore the complete client data directory in the event of a

Try using the label libvol command from within ITSM. I have never

Performence question on Network and switch w.r.t NFS AIX.

2003-02-24 Thread PINNI, BALANAND (SBCSI)
Hi all,

I have db volumes on Netapp filer and it is mounted as NFS from AIX point of
view.Recently I migrated db volumes to this mount point on 100mbps /sec on
its NAS interface.

But later migrated to 1GB Network interface ,i.e netapp interface which is
also on 1GB interface connected to AIX p server.

Now my question is when I have CISCO 4000 Switch in between the
observation was found degradation in performance. So I enabled jumbo frames
on GB NICard on both sides i.e on AIX as well as on NT side i.e 9000 mtu
size .Now futher degradation has taken place which was not tolerable.

It was found that CISCO switch mtu size was 1500 and that of both servers
it was 9000(jumbo frames).

Now my question is:

1.Is it sufficient just to change mtu size on switch or we need to do some
tuneing further on switch.

As per aix network is concerned

I checked up tcp_sendspace , tcp_recvspace so I enabled rfc1323=1.
thewall is 1/2 of ram i.e mbuff and I don't see any problem with analysis on
netstat-m.
sb_max is 475236 which is ok and I don't see any errors on interface.

But I would like to know that what else I may be missing???

I need to improve performence but I see that there is degradation in
comparision with 100mbps NIC on netapp.

Please help me in this matter .

Thanks
Balanand Pinni

Re: TSM server crashing

2003-02-24 Thread Bob Booth - UIUC
It looks like your server is running out of memory. Some of the threads
are crashing, and message reading threads can't get started, therefore you
are seeing the Message number errors.

I had simular problems with this on AIX, when we were doing server to server
communications. Restores from one server to another would cause my AIX
TSM server to eat memory and die.

hope this helps, your server level looks like a good candidate for upgrade.

Converting I/O station into regular slots

I have a question, I am running out of physical space on my 3583

Any help will be appreciated.

and a couple of 100 other (silly) messages.

'Normally', if expirations ends before it is finished, the next expiration
startes where the last expirations did stop. So, smart as we are (ahum), we
stop expiration after the error and restart. But in this case this trick
doesn't work.
Every expiration starts all over again, hardly deleting anything, hit this
error again, continues with examination and stops at the end of his list.
Number of examined object is now nearly 4 million, my guess is that at least
3 million should be deleted.
Not to mention that we will ran out of tapes pretty soon

Cheers,

I am the developer who works on the ODBC driver, and I am unfamiliar with
this particular problem. Can you please open up a problem with support on
this, as it may require an APAR? You can give the support people my name,
tell them I said this should go to Level 2, and that they can contact me
about this. I don't believe I will need to ask for much information about
this, as I should be able to recreate the problem... but I would like to
see the problem record opened so we have a vehicle for keeping you
informed about the progress of the problem.

Subject:ODBC driver for Microsoft : the driver was unable to allocate
memory
required to support execution

Hi list,

I would like to use the ODBC driver delivered with TSM Windows client, in
conjunction with an Access 2002 database, but when I try to issue
following query : SELECT SUMMARY.START_TIME, SUMMARY.END_TIME,
SUMMARY.ACTIVITY, SUMMARY.ENTITY, SUMMARY.BYTES, [end_time]-[start_time]
AS duration
FROM SUMMARYWHERE (((SUMMARY.START_TIME)Date()-1) AND
((SUMMARY.ACTIVITY)=STGPOOL BACKUP));
on the linked summary table, I allways get following message ODBC ---
call failed The driver was unable to allocate memory required to support
execution (#19).
Could someone tell me wat is going on here ? Is my poor laptop memory
constrained, or could it be due to some wrong setting in my ODBC
connection, or ... ?
Thanks in advance.

Now my question is:

1.Is it sufficient just to change mtu size on switch or we need to do some
tuneing further on switch.

Thanks
Balanand Pinni

Balanand,

Which Supervisor engine does this Cisco 4000 switch have? Sup II does NOT
support jumbo frames at all. Sup III does support them after IOS version
12.1(13)EW, but only on certain lines cards and on NON-blocking ports. This
is an important point. I would advise you get in touch with your LAN
engineer and work from there. If the switch does not support the frames
(i.e . Sup II) it will simply drop them. This could be causing some of the
performance problems.

TDP Domino sporadic/chronic error - ACD0200E File (NULL) could not be opened for reading.

2003-02-24 Thread Kent Monthei
We have a TDP-Domino incremental backup schedule on our TSM Server that
occasionally produces this message in the client log:

Tivoli Data Protection for Lotus Domino - Version 1, Release 1,
Level 1.0
.
.
  Backing up database mail\WXY12345.nsf, 1 of 1.
  Full: 0 Read: 0 Written: 0 Rate: 0.00 Kb/Sec
  Backup of mail\WXY12345.nsf failed.
ACD0200E File (NULL) could not be opened for reading.
.
.
This has been occurring sporadically on 3 different Domino Servers. Each
server has several hundred active mail databases, all in the same
subdirectory, most of which TDP backs up just fine. We see this message
on a very small, random subset - typically just 1-3 databases on 1 of the
3 servers on any given night. Sometimes all 3 server backups succeed with
no reported errors. The subset of affected databases is somewhat random,
except that they always seem to be near (not at) the end of the mail
subdirectory.

We perform follow-up incremental backups on any that fail, and the
follow-up backups always work fine.

We haven't been able to correlate occurrences to any client-side or
server-side events. Does anyone know what might be causing this, and
(hopefully) how to resolve it?

-rsvp, thanks

2003-02-24 Thread Henk ten Have
Henk - Possibly: You could do a Select search on your Backups or Archives
tables for that OBJECT_ID, to identify the filespace object involved,
and perhaps via Contents determine what tape volume it is on, then do an
Audit Volume Fix=Yes ?

Richard, I know which filespace is involved (i.e. the last ANR4391
before the error starts). I try (tomorrow) to find the tape volume.
At least it's a good try to give an audit volume a chance.

I'm curious: Did you do a CANcel EXPIration or CANcel PRocess ?

Actually I did a CANcel PRocess. I tried now a CANcel EXPIration.
Guess what? Expiration don't start ALL over, but keeps starting
a couple of dozen filespaces BEFORE the one which gives the error.
I'll be damned
Anyway, you give me some things to try, thanks. I'll let you know
about my experience the next days.

Cheers,
Henk (next days? Don't think so, tomorrow...before we ran out
  of tape volumes)

Help setting up RMAN w/ TDP 2210

2003-02-24 Thread Theresa Sarver
Hi all;

I'm having all kinds of problems and am hoping someone can assist me with this
setup...as I'm all confused at this point.

Environment:
AIX 51 ML3
TSM Server 5162
TSM (ba) Client 510 (64 bit)
TSM (api) Client 4210 (32 bit)
TDP (oracle) Client 2210 (32 bit)
Oracle Enterprise Server 817

As this server is running AIX5 w/ Oracle 817 databases I had to install TDP 2210 (if I
read the documentation right), and TDP 22 installed the 4210 (32 bit) API.

No matter what we try RMAN will not backup, we went from seeing the following errrors:

RMAN-03007: retryable error occurred during execution of command: allocate
RMAN-07004: unhandled exception during command execution on channel dev1
RMAN-10035: exception raised in RPC: ORA-19554: error allocating device, device type:

ORA-27000: skgfqsbi: failed to initialize storage subsystem (SBT) layer
IBM AIX RISC System/6000 Error: 2534: System call error number 2534.

to this error:

RMAN-03007: retryable error occurred during execution of command: allocate
RMAN-07004: unhandled exception during command execution on channel dev1
RMAN-10035: exception raised in RPC: ORA-19554: error allocating device, device type:

ORA-27000: skgfqsbi: failed to initialize storage subsystem (SBT) layer
IBM AIX RISC System/6000 Error: 2518: System call error number 2518.

I tripple checked that the libobk.a file is linked to the correct location:
/c2qnu01/u01/oracle/product/8.1.7/libls -la libobk.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 oracle dba 17 Feb 21 11:20 libobk.a - /usr/lib/li
bobk.a

Output of tdpo.opt:
DSMI_ORC_CONFIG/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/dsm.opt.oracle
DSMI_LOG /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin

TDPO_FSadmsorc
TDPO_NODE c2qnu01_oracle
TDPO_OWNER oracle
TDPO_PSWDPATH /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin

I have attached the dsm.opt and dsm.sys files for your review. I have linked them
both from the api directory back to the ba/bin directory:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 44 Feb 21 16:22 dsm.opt.oracle - /usr/
tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsm.opt.oracle
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 37 Feb 20 16:05 dsm.sys - /usr/tivoli/
tsm/client/ba/bin/dsm.sys

The password file was generated fine and I was able to run the tdpoconf showenv, the
contents of which I included. I also provided the tdpoerror.log - though I don't
think it'll help any.

I've gone through all relevant archive articles and nothing seems to apply to my
situation. I also opened a PMR with TSM Support, but I haven't heard anything back
yet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you;
Theresa

Re: licensing costs

2003-02-24 Thread Coats, Jack
I find that even when I ask a 'simple' licensing question if nt VAR (i.e.
what is the cost of a NT client license), they are told they must go back to
TSM to ensure the configuration for a client license (also delaying any
quote I want from 24 to 72 hours ro so). ... So currently, the answer is
'NO' as far as I can tell.

I used to have a spread sheet from TSM so when I worked for a TSM VAR, we
could do configuration and quoting. You put in the kind of server, options,
clients, etc, and it added up the points. ... Depending on the negotiated
cost of points, was the cost.

Reciently I heard from my VAR, that TSM NT/2K and Novell clients are all now
priced on a per processor basis. Where previously on these the client was
for up to 4 processors, and after that you went to a different teir of
pricing.

Now a single processor client cost more than a non-processor specific client
did 6 months ago.

grumble
As much as I like TSM, IMHO, they need to figure out how they want to price
it, and publish that mechagnism for everyone to understand. Also, the
current pricing structure is pretty bad. Everytime I look at getting a few
more clients, it makes me want to re-evaluate using TSM at all from a
financial perspective.
/grumble

Tape Errors - Help me recover unavailable tapes...

I did a 'q vol acc=unavailable' and found 4 tapes in my little 3583 library.
Each tape showed errors, 9, 9, 216, and 1 respectively.
Then I did a 'q vol acc=destoyed' and found 2 tapes, with 53 and 0 errors
reported respectively. These two tapes show that
some files are on them.

I really have all the tapes, and all the unavailable ones are in the
library. The two destroyed ones were pulled out an marked
destroyed out of frustration several weeks ago.

Any suggestions on how I should clean this up, an hopefully recover some
tapes?

Thanks In Advance! ... Jack

Oh yes, my config:
TSM server 4.2 on Win2K, IBM 3583 library with 6 SCSI attached lto drives on
3 controllers, 60 slots, and a 12 slot door. The library is set up for
autoclean, and has 3 cleaning tapes in it.

I am wondering if there is still a link out there that will allow us to
figure out licensing costs. Sure it's changed a half million times and
Tivoli has been consolidated into IBM but maybe someone knows where it is. I
am assuming it would not be advisable to just bring up another server
without a server license just because we don't want to punch a hole in the
firewall for backups.

Geoff,

I don't solicit business from this list. However, I am the owner of MDR
Consulting, Inc. and we are an IBM Advanced Business Partner. We resell
all of IBM's product lines, but we specialize in storage. If your BP is
not getting you clear and accurate quotes within 24 hours than you need
to switch to a different BP. We give same day quotes all the time!
This of course assumes that the customer has the proper information
available for us, i.e. number of processors, do they want or are they
required to have the EE (extended edition), will they be using any of
the TDP's, etc. I would be glad to offer you any assistance with your
SW concerns. In particular converting your old licenses to the new per
processor license can be quite confusing. As a BP I believe my job is
to protect you the customer from the bureaucracy of IBM. Then of course
there is Passport Advantage that you must sign up for in order to
purchase SW at the best possible price. I would be glad to explain this
whole system to anyone on this list if they like or if there is enough
interest I would post to the list an overview of the entire system.
In addition, someone posed the question of why IBM charge per processor
the question was; Can anyone explain how having more than one processor
in a server has anything to do with how much it costs to back it up?
IBM assumes that a 2 processor machine manages more data than a single
processor, but not as much as a 4 processor machine. It actually works
out to be a very simple (and I think fair) method of charging for the
product. Also, keep ion mind that if you have a 16 way machine and for
some reason you no longer are going to manage it with ITSM you could
then transfer those licenses to 4 different 4-way machines or any other
combination that totaled 16 processors and this is regardless of the
platform type. This is a great improvement over the old system.
As I stated before, I would be glad to discuss any of these licensing
questions with anyone who would like a clearer explanation. I can be
reached toll free in the USA at 866-CALL-MDR (225-5637) or outside the
USA at 512-282-6180 (sorry I don't no the US international access code).
P.S. I want to make it clear this is not an attempt to solicit business,
I am merely trying to help explain what can be a very confusing issue.

Sure, it's how IBM can change more for a product that lives on the
higher end of the food chain. They figure that if you spend money on
SMP based systems, then you can afford more for your software licensing.

Reciently I heard from my VAR, that TSM NT/2K and Novell clients are
all now priced on a per processor basis. Where previously on these
the client was for up to 4 processors, and after that you went to a
 different teir of pricing.

Now a single processor client cost more than a non-processor specific
 client did 6 months ago.

As much as I like TSM, IMHO, they need to figure out how they want to
price it, and publish that mechagnism for everyone to understand.
Also, the current pricing structure is pretty bad. Everytime I look
at getting a few more clients, it makes me want to re-evaluate using
TSM at all from a financial perspective. /grumble

I upgraded 4.1.6 - 5.1.5 -5.1.6.0 -5.1.6.2 I don't remember the version
for the ITSM device driver as I went back but it was the latest available
on the tivoli server. But there was something peculiar : when I issued an
update all with the 5.1.5 cd, the devices were not updated and I had to
specifically install it.

To answer to you last question : I hope that the fact that the drivers
doesn't function is not normal ! :-))

How you did the upgrade (4.1.6 - 5.1.6.2 or 4.1.6 - 5.1.0.0 - 5.1.6.0

What is the fileset and version for the ITSM device driver?

Subject:Problem with Storagetek L20 and 5.1.6.2

Hello,

I juste upgraded my TSM server on AIX 4.3.3 to 5.1.6.2 from 4.1.6 and I
had
to reinstall the devices software at 4.1 level to have my Storagetek work.
The library functionned but the DLT1 drives where unable to read tapes. I
got the following message :

20.02.03 14:06:43 ANR8302E I/O error on drive DLT1.2 (/dev/mt1)
(OP=SETMODE,
  Error Number=22, CC=207, KEY=FF, ASC=FF, ASCQ=FF,
  SENSE=**NONE**, Description=Device is not in a state
capable of performing request). Refer to Appendix D
in
the 'Messages' manual for recommended action.

I just updated TSM to 5.1.6.2 and removed the drive and the library before
recreating them.

Did I do anything wrong or is it normal (I hope not)

Regards
