Re: Restart TSM Client on Windows 2000

2003-11-06 Thread Soheal Athar
This can be actioned by the following :-

Select Start button ( bottom left hand corner on your Win2000 Server ) Programs
Admin istrative
Tools Services

Within Services you will see TSM Client Acceptor ( right click it and then you can
start the Service )
This should be started and the Startup Type should be set to Automatic.
Also there should be Remote Client and the TSM Scheduler these should both be in a
Manual state.

Hope this helps

Thanks ...

Re: TDP for Oracle Errors

2003-11-06 Thread Juan Manuel Lopez Azañon
Hi All.
On these case, I suggest to use tdposync to sync both catalogs:
Oracle catalog and tdp database.
So, I have to say that tdposync not always works fine, because, sometimes
gives an incorrect information about the backupieces deleted on oracle
catalog and NOT deteled on TSM database.
It is the only way to repair inconsistences between both catalogs.
I would like to make a call to IBM development team to improbe much more
this usefull utility. I hope they hear me

Asunto:Re: TDP for Oracle Errors

Eric,

Oracle 9i introduced the concept of autobackups for the control file.
During the autobackup process, Oracle dynamically generates the
backuppiece name for the control files that are being saved. During this
backup processing, a unique name is generated by Oracle prior to backing
it up and the TSM Server is then checked to ensure that this backuppiece
name does not exist.

When performing this check for any existing objects that might have this
name, Oracle will first try to delete this file regardless of whether it
exists or not. The return code from the deletion process not finding the
object on the TSM Server is the ANU2602E message.

During the autobackup processing, Oracle calls the Media Management Layer
(Data Protection for Oracle/TSM Server in this case). Oracle issues the
command to attempt a deletion prior to autobackup of the control file.
Because each MML operation is a unique and distinct session, the MML has
to treat each delete the same. In other words, Oracle gives no hints as to
the type of deletion being performed therefor Data Protection for Oracle
just attempts the delete.

From Data Protection for Oracle's point of view a file not found during a
delete could be a potentially serious error. For example:
- During the delete the user is actually using a TSM filespace name that
is different than what the objects were originally backed up under.
- The TSM node does not have the backup delete permissions
(backdel=yes|no).
- During the deletion a different TDPO_NODE is specified than what was
used during backup.
The reason that these are potentially dangerous is that when Data
Protection for Oracle detects an error during delete that a file is not
found or cannot be deleted Oracle specifies that the MML does not return
an error to Oracle. This causes a situation where during normal deletion
Oracle would remove the backuppiece name from it's catalog but the backup
could still exist on the TSM Server there by using up unnecessary storage
space.

Unfortunately, unless we ignore this error altogether then there is
nothing that we (developement) can do. In the mean time the only tips we
can give to work around these error messages during autobackups is for the
user to do the following: Use the DISABLE EVENTS command on the TSM Server
to suppress all ANU0599 ANU2602E messages so there would be no
notification when a the file is not being found during DP for Oracle
processing. For the tdpoerror.log, a different DSMI_LOG could be specified
(in the tdpo.opt file) for the autobackup so that the errorlog would go to
a different directory - in this way these logs could be monitored
separately.

Subject: TDP for Oracle Errors

Hi *SM-ers!
Our Oracle guys and girls are currently testing DP for Oracle 5.2 on
Oracle
9i. They turned one a new RMAN feature for automated controlfile backup
(for
those of you interested, the command is 'configure controlfile autobackup
on;') Now, whenever a controlfile backup is running it generates the
following error in both the tdpoerror.log and the actlog:

ANE4994S (Session: 1437562, Node: KL1003VC-ORC) TDP Oracle AIX ANU0599
ANU2602E The object /mount/appl1//c-213141136-20031104-0e was not
found
on the TSM Server

We had to make a trace to see that this error is generated because TSM
first
checks whether the object exists on the server before allocating it.
I created a PMR for this behavior and level 1 now says: works as designed,
just suppress ANE4994S from the actlog (impossible since ANE4994S is a
generic message) and build something yourself to clear your tdpoerror.log
periodically.
I find this a VERY disappointing reply from IBM
Has anybody encountered this behavior to and maybe found a better way to
solve these errors?
Maybe someone from development listening on this list has a good
suggestion?
I'm really stuck here with the Dutch level 1 support... :-((

Christian,

the procedure is described in the TSM for Windows administration
reference.

First of all, you'll need to use the -k parameter to specify which TSM
servers you want to use.

Second of all, it's preferred to use the loadformat statement instead of
the format statement, when preparing the TSM database for a load.

And, as Goran pointed out, you'll need to enter your logfilenames as well.

lan free and copystgpool parameter

2003-11-06 Thread i love tsm
Hi All

Well my lan free backup/restore is now working to my onsite library.
However one little niggle is that even though the tape storage pool I'm
writing to has the copystgpool parameter set (pointing to offsite storage
pool) it doesn;t seem to work. The copystgpool parameter works on another
stgpool we have.
The storage agent has not been zoned to see any drives at the offsite
location, I thought the TSM server would handle the data transfer to the
copystgpool internally without any use of the storage agent. Is that
correct?
To get this to work, do I need to share my offsite library, zone the storage
agent to see the offsite drives and define some more drive paths??
TSM Server and storage agent= 5.1.5.4

Hope that makes sense..

Re: TSM TDP for Notes Experts?

2003-11-06 Thread Del Hoobler
Gerald,

 1. Is it possible to restore those restores with the latest TDP for
 Notes (5.1.x)?

Yes.

 2. Is it possible to restore those restores with the latest TDP for
 Notes (5.1.x) to Notes 6.x?

Yes. If you want to apply logs, you may have to use an alternate
partition to get the same loggerid... but the databases will restore.
There are a few knowledge base articles that talks about Domino 6
restores.
Go here to search:

http://www-3.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/IBMTivoliStorageManagerforMail.html

and type in Domino 6 restore to search for the articles.

Thanks,

I wanted to ask something more specific as I'm not very strong in

I have old backups of a Notes 5.x server that were supposedly taken with

Re: TDP for Oracle Errors

2003-11-06 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM
Hi Neil!
Thank you VERY for your reply!
If I suppress this message from the actlog I will never see this message. I
can think of situations where I do want to see them, for instance, when a
database restore fails because object are not found on the server. I admit,
this kind of situation should never happen, but if it does, I would like to
see these messages...
I guess I have to look for a way to adjust my daily report scripts so the
messages are filtered...
You also stated: For the tdpoerror.log, a different DSMI_LOG could be
specified
(in the tdpo.opt file) for the autobackup so that the errorlog would go to a
different directory - in this way these logs could be monitored separately.
This would be true if the autobackup was a separate process, however, the
autobackup of the controlfiles is part of a full or incremental backup, so I
don't see a way to route the controlfile backup messages to another file.
Could you please explain?
Thanks again!
Kindest regards,
Eric van Loon

Subject: Re: TDP for Oracle Errors

(in the tdpo.opt file) for the autobackup so that the errorlog would go to
a different directory - in this way these logs could be monitored
separately.

Hi *SM-ers!
Our Oracle guys and girls are currently testing DP for Oracle 5.2 on
Oracle

(for

We had to make a trace to see that this error is generated because TSM
first

I created a PMR for this behavior and level 1 now says: works as designed,

You do not have to change access on all tapepool tapes to read-only, only
the ones with the status of FILLING although doing it to the entire pool
will not cause any problems. you will however have to move the data from
the filling volumes to new volumes using the move data command as TSM does

all TAPEPOOL volumes as readonly (see prev post), but can I assume that I
need to relable all the scratch tapes that are in the lib at present, so
that they use the new formatting?

Many thanks again

Hi TSMers

TSM 5.1.6.2. running on Solaris 2.7

Regarding the upgrade from B1A to H1A tape drives (housed in a 3494
library).

The drives and library code are being upgraded as I speak (or type).
Yesterday I upgraded the IBMtape level to 4.0.8.0 and the lmcpd code to
5.3.9.0, so I can assume that I'm pretty up to date here. Can I also
assume, that all being well the OS will pick up these devices itself and
assign it the necessary device special file names. I know it does normally,
but being H1A devices I just want to check.

Also, is there any real reason to create a new device class within TSM or
will the following device configuration still be correct.

/* Device Configuration */
DEFINE DEVCLASS 3590CLASS1 DEVTYPE=3590 FORMAT=DRIVE MOUNTLIMIT=DRIVES

actually I just did a migration from 4 3590B to 6 3590E

You do not have to change access on all tapepool tapes to read-only, only
the ones with the status of FILLING although doing it to the entire pool
will not cause any problems. you will however have to move the data from
the filling volumes to new volumes using the move data command as TSM does
not reclaim space from tapes in the primary sequential pool in the filling
mode.

I checked out all the scratch and then checked them back in just to be
safe.

I am glad that I asked the question, although it is very stupid one. I did
read the user manual again.
It seems that the DOMAIN is for defining 1) drives, (I just assumed the
entries shown in my domain list window which mostly are directories could
be used as domain objects.) or 2) share names which could be used to a
directory (authentic shared one or not (cheating)). I do have a network
shared directory needs backup on the d drive of the machine where TSM

Am I correct? My question is that is net share inetpub=g:\inetpub a

Lan,

The net share command I mentioned has nothing at all to do with TSM.
Rather, it is a Windows command that you can issue from an OS prompt on
the machine to which the directory is local (i.e. the machine that
contains the g:\inetpub directory).

You may wish to engage your Windows system administrator(s) for further
assistance. The command I gave was just an example.

Re: Exchange 2003

2003-11-06 Thread Del Hoobler
Mehdi,

If you have a paid PD of a previous version 2.2 or 5.1.5,
you can install it first... so that you get the paid license
on your machine.. then install the 5.2.1 PTF package
over the top of it. That will work.
You will then be able to back up your Exchange 2003 server.

Thanks,

Del

You can download Dp for Exchange 5.2.1 at

ftp://ftp.storsys.ibm.com/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/tivoli-data-

protection/ntexch/v521/nt/ but I doubt you will not be able to use it.
The
last time I tried it wasn't working because you need the license file (I
believe it's called exchange.lic) and it wasn't installed. When I
installed
the software from CD it was, so it's probably not included in the
download
 version...

TSM Server upgrade and client inter-operability

2003-11-06 Thread Simeon Johnston
I finally got onto the IBM ftp servers and can download the
server/client upgrades.
What I'm wondering about is client/server version compatibility and
licensing.
We have v5.1.0 server. If I'm looking at it correctly, I should be
able to upgrade that to the most recent version of 5.1, i.e. we have a
license for any 5.1.x. Am I correct here?
I have a few Linux machines to backup (Redhat 9). They fulfill the
requirements of the client (2.4 kernel, glibc 2.2 etc), so I'm looking
at the 5.1.6 client. But my server is only at 5.1.0.
Now, I THINK it would work fine, but given the number strange problems
I've read about (e.g. session table never works right kind of
problems) I'd rather get some actual feedback from people with
experience with this kind of setup.
Recap --
Given that we bought 5.1.0(LATEST is 5.1.8) server for Windows, what
level can I upgrade to with my current license?
What problems/issues will I face if I upgrade? DB compatibility etc.
Gotcha's?
Best client version for Linux Redhat9 to backup to said server (5.1.0
or 5.1.8 server), client versions 5.1.0 - 5.1.6.

You are able to upgrade within the 5.1.x range. Read the supplied
readme's of the serverlevel to see what kind of problems you are have and is
solved in that level. The easy answer is: Go to the highest level in you
range, it solves a lot of problems. The small letters are: New levels
introduce new or sometimes old problems. I think you should at lest be at
5.1.7.x server level and client level 5.1.5.x.

Re: Shared mem with Solaris LAN-Free

2003-11-06 Thread Richard Sims
I keep getting the error when trying to run the sharedmem commethod on the TSM
Storage Agent on my Sun Solaris server.

ANR9600E Failed to allocate memory for shared memory communications. Error:
 EINVAL.
ANR8289W Shared Memory driver is terminating due to error in creating a new
 thread.

Anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this? The server has got 8GB of RAM!

Um, did you do what the message ANR9600E explanation advised?

Re: [tsm] Perl TSM daily reporting script.

2003-11-06 Thread Patrick Audley
David Patrick, Looks nice. But I hope you aren't going to rely
David on the schedule completion status to tell you whether a
David backup has been successful. You really need to mine the
David last backup dates of q filespace f=d (or the equiv select).

Ah... no I hadn't realized that :) I'm actually quite new to TSM
and this is exactly the feedback that I was hoping to get. I've added
that to the todo list.
Thanks,
Patrick.

Macintosh OS X include/exclude domain list

2003-11-06 Thread John Bremer
Greetings,

TSM Server 5.1.6.2, AIX 5.1

Mac OS X 10.2
TSM Mac OS X client 5.2.0.0
I'm trying to exclude the Macintosh HD domain and backup only one folder
from the drive. The GUI is not very cooperative in Edit Preferences.
Documentation says :

DOMAIN -Macintosh HD:

in TSM User Preferences should exclude my Mac HD. Then in TSM System
Preferences, I want to include a certain folder. However, I am having
trouble getting the GUI to choose the folder and add an include statement
to the System Preferences.
Assuming the folder is Documents, what would be the syntax? Below?

include Macintosh HD:Documents:...:*

I can't get this to be added through the GUI, but can BBEDIT the
Preferences files.
Any assistance is appreciated.

Regards, John

device class mount point mixed library (DLT7000 and SDLT320)

2003-11-06 Thread Kurt Beyers
Hello,

I've posted a question a few weeks ago about DLT7000 drives and SDLT320 drives in the
same library (Storagetek L180). IBM said that the mixed drives are supported in the
same library. The TSM server is 5.2.1.2 on Windows2000.

I've defined today the library as follows:

define library mixlib libtype=scsi
define path server01 mixlib srctype=server desttype=library device=lb3.0.0.0

define drive mixlib dlt_mt4
define drive mixlib sdlt_mt5
define path server01 dlt_mt4 srctype=server desttype=drive library=mixlib
device=mt4.0.0.0
define path server01 sdlt_mt5 srctype=server desttype=drive library=mixlib
device=mt5.0.0.0
define devclass dlt_class devtype=dlt format=dlt35c library=mixlib
define devclass sdlt_class devtype=dlt format=sdlt320c library=mixlib
define stgpool dlt_pool dlt_class maxscratch=20 (was already defined of course)
define stgpool sdlt_pool sdlt_class maxscratch=20

The first serie of tests went fine: labelling of SDLT tapes
backup of the TSM database to a DLT7000
tape

I started then the migration from the primary DLT volumes to the SDLT primary pool.
This confuses me from time to time. The following sitations happened:

1. SDLT volume mounted in SDLT drive and a bit later the move failed with the warning
ANR1145W (not enough mount points available). All drives and paths were online A
'query mount' didn't give any other mount requests.

2. SDLT volume mounted in SDLT drive, DLT tape in the other SDLT drive and the 'move
data' is successfull.

3. SDLT volume in SDLT drive and DLT tape in DLT7000 drive (that is what I would
expect). The'move data' is successfull.

If a new 'move data' is started, you typically see the message 'waiting for a mount
point in device class sdlt_class or dlt_class. But how does TSM knows which drive
belongs to which device class? Where is this link defined (through the format:dlt35c /
sdlt320c in the device class?)? Can you check which drives belongs to a specific
device class according to TSM?

And why is a DLT tape mounted in a SDLT drive if the DLT drive is ready to be used as
well?

Any input that will make this more clear to me how TSM chooses a drive is more then
welcome. Thanks in advance,

Kurt

your script does not say anything:
7. Scratch Volumes

Scratch volumes are the volumes that TSM uses to do... well pretty
much everything. If you run out then the server will break and bad
juju will happen. All of the numbers below should be greater than at
 least 5.
___
8. Paths and Drives
Is that how it is supposed to work?

Re: Query Event for Previous day shows status In Progress

2003-11-06 Thread Rushforth, Tim
Here's the descriptions we give for the Failed Status to users:

In Progress used to be (?) - which in all the cases I've seen actually makes
more sense! Event's In Progress show as Started all the time for us.

Status
==

In Progress - Schedule not completed, status not reported to server
  - check dsmerror.log, dsmsched.log and OS Event logs
  - Usually means session severed to TSM server
  - Could be caused by Network error, TSM Server or client error
during schedule
  - Restart TSM Client Schedule Service

Completed(4) - The operation completed successfully, but some files were
not processed
  - Files are not processed for various reasons. The most common
reasons are:
  - The file was in use by another application and could not be
accessed by the client
  - The file changed during the operation to an extent
prohibited by the copy serialization attribute
  - (See client errors attachment for failed files)

Completed(8) - The operation completed with at least one warning message
  - Check Windows Event Log or dsmerror.log and dsmsched.log

Failed- Client reported a failure - check dsmerror.log and
dsmsched.log
  - Archives may show Failed if files opened with exclusive
access were not processed
  - (These files should be excluded, or the application should
be stopped via pre/post cmds)

Missed- TSM Server could not contact client during startup window
  - This could indicate a problem with TSM Server, TSM client or
network (including firewall rules)
  - Ensure TSM Client Schedule Service is running

Restarted - Schedule was still running when report was run
  - Session lost and reconnected during startup window (eg.
Reboot)
  - Check dsmsched.log/event logs for final status

Started - Schedule was still running when report was run
  - Check dsmsched.log/event logs for final status

Querying the data a file was backed up on a volume

2003-11-06 Thread Gerald Wichmann
I've got a volume that I've don't a query content on. I can't tell what date
the files were backed up that are on that volume though. I'm thinking I have
to do a select query to pull this off but somehow I need a method to figure
out what date the objects in a query content for a volume were backed up.
Any suggestions? The closest I've come is I got a ballpark date by doing a
select * from volumes for the volume which tells me when it was last written
to. It doesn't give me the date of an individual item though. I need a finer
level of granularity.

Appreciate the help!

Gerald

Yes, I've been bitten by this. A Windows 2000 client ran the Client
Acceptor under the LocalSystem account. One day, the Windows administrator
changed a drive to exclude LocalSystem from having access. The TSM client
didn't use a DOMAIN statement.

This resulted in that drive to be skipped without *any* message, warning or
error. If the drive would have been in a DOMAIN statement, an error would have
been issued.

There is an APAR for this behaviour, but that is closed as a suggestion
because IBM finds it too much trouble to fix.
