Command line backup Estimate
The TSM client Backup-Archive GUI provides a button to estimate the time needed for backup. Thus far I have not been able to determine how to do this from the dsmc command line. Any ideas? Thank you.. - Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. Go to Yahoo! Answers.
Open File Support for 64-bit XP
When installing the TSM client, version 5.3.4, for 64-bit Windows XP, I do NOT see the option Help me configure Open File Support in the clientt setup wizard nor was it available during the initial installation. TSM Reporter Daily Report
I'm using the TSM Operational Reporting Technology Preview (Driver 7). In the Issues and Recommendations section of the Daily Report, it states that too many admin schedules have completed with errors, Condition being 1 0, and recommends issue: q sched type=admin, re-issue the displayed cmd, and look for more information. The reporter listed all admin schedules as having completed sucessfully, and indeed, the activity log confirms this. There is one message that seems suspicious: ANR2111W: BACKUP STGPOOL: There is no data to process for PRIMARY1 (SESSION: 1344) Is this what the reporter is complaining about??? What is the licensing model for TSM?
Need some help understanding aboyt TSM 5.3 licensing. Thanks... We run TSM 5.2.2 on Linux (Suse) with one dual drive tape library and our licensing looks like this: (lines containing 0 edited out) Last License Audit: 02/14/2007 04:08:08 AM Is Tivoli Disaster Recovery Manager in use ?: No Is Tivoli Disaster Recovery Manager licensed ?: No Is Library Sharing in use: No Is Library Sharing licensed: No Number of Managed System for LAN in use: 52 Number of Managed System for LAN licensed: 57 Number of Managed Libraries in use: 1 Number of Managed Libraries licensed: 1 Tivoli Data Protection for NDMP in use ?: No Tivoli Data Protection for NDMP licensed ?: No Is Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention in use ?: No Is Tivoli Storage Manager for Data Retention licensed ?: No Server License Compliance: Valid The plan is to upgrade to 5.3 and add another nearly identical library. Extract a tape
Hello, One of my users requested that his 200GB directory be backed up so that he could recover the disk space. This was done by TSM, albeit with some errors such as Object '/mnt/propag/Popeye_Data/Blablabla/blablabla/BLABLABLA/blablabla.mat' contains unrecognized symbols for current locale, skipping... Once the backup was complete and the disk space recovered on the client, (rm -rf /mnt/propag/Popeye_Data/*.*), a request was made for a physical tape containing the data. I don't want to create an entire backupset as this directory is only part of a much larger filespace and I'd prefer if TSM would NOT manage the tape's whereabouts, etc. Assume that I have no disk space to work with, a reasonable assessment. The user did not specify a format but a compressed tar file would be nice but TSM format is acceptable. My operating system is Suse 8 and I'm using TSM Server 5.2.2. How can I give him a tape with his data on it? Thank you very much have the disk space. Previously, it had been specifically excluded from backup. - All new Yahoo! My organization runs TSM version 5.2.2.1. The storage pool, TAPEPOOL, uses a tape library consisting of 2 X 4560SLX drives, master and slave. One drive, SDLT_1, has reported this error sxteen times since the beginning of the year: ANR8944E Hardware or media error on drive SDLT_1 (/dev/tsmscsi/mt0) (OP=REW, Error Number=5, CC=306, KEY=03, ASC=81, ASCQ=00, SENSE=70.00.03.00.00.00.00.16.00.00.00.00.81.00.00.00.00.00.45.02.B2.00.00.2D.F7.02.47.2F.0A., Description=Drive or media failure). Refer to Appendix D in the 'Messages' manual for recommended action. The drive will stay online and continue functioning. This error has occurred on different media. The console of the tape library reports no errors in the error log. Is this a hardware issue or related to TSM?? Any info is appreciated.. - Post your free ad now! Yahoo! Canada Personals

ANR0207E Page address mismatch detected on database
This error code has appeared in the activity logs for more than a year. It is an intermittent problem that can occur at any time of day. There does not appear to be a common thread such as a particular process running when this error happens. The Messages document relates this: ANR0207E Page address mismatch detected on database volume volume name, logical page logical page number (physical page physical page number); actual: logical page number. Explanation: During a read of a database page, the page does not contain the expected page address. System Action: The failed I/O operation is retried on a mirrored volume. User Response: See accompanying messages for information about the volume in error. Accompanying messages give no indication as to the nature of the problem. It should also be known that no server downtime has corresponded with the condition reported in the activity log. I would like to have a better understanding of what is going on and hopefully resolve this issue. Small Sites
Has anyone deployed TSM in a very small site? When I say a small site I mean something like this: 4 or 5 workstations 2 or 3 servers very limited bandwidth available from WAN - assume 56k (yes) NO local administration NO budget for tape library TSM sharing a physical server with Domino, platform is Windows 150 MB per user per week storage growth 1 X 73 GB hd for use as storage pool/file device 100Mb LAN access to large remote TSM servers 12 hour backup window, assumption that WAN link is at 56k (yes!) backup of local workstations preferred but not required TSM clients would mostly be Windows XP/2003 but could include Linux, in particular, and just about anything else. weekly full backup required to remote TSM server Would this be a candidate for remote NAS backup? I am looking at TSM because it allows for policy implentation, can accommodate clients on just about all platforms and also because it allows backup to disk. This is not to say that other backup/restore products could be used - Retrospect might be usable too.. To me, this is an interesting exercise. Re: AW: Small Sites
Juraj, I should state that my organization currently has a couple 100-user sites using local Windows TSM Servers with 2-drive tape libraries and they are administered remotely. Physical visits to the sites are no more than twice per year. Full backup of the Domino server, is required, by Service Level Agreement. If Domino is local then there might as well be a local backup. As far as other TSM clients go, it's incrementals forever. I My suspicion is that a small site will consist of: portable, dockable XP laptops that will be backed up by schedule, using a client option set. Windows server Domino Server. Salak Juraj [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, as far as I understand you, you only want to backup this site into an existing large TSM server elsewhere. I not, GOTO (2) A small TSM Server per site, if necessarey at all, is not practicable without both local administration and tape library. I have few site like this (with the exception of Domino) and the answer is : first: it works, assuming that amount of files changed daily is significantly less than WAN capacity in the backup window. Second, read first again. Third, compression and subfile backup can help much, but it depends on data and you configuration. Probaly backup of system object will not be practicable, but backup of data files probably yes. You will have to tune include/exclude options down, you will have to tune network parameters, compression/compressalways parameters (per directory, file type..) subfilebackup you will want to use journal service. FORGET full backup weekly, no one needs it. Read TSM concepts, browse in this user forum. What you/your users need is RESTORE and ONLY RESTORE, no one in the world ever needed backup, not to say a full backup. Consider you restore requirements, if full restore is an issue, it will take long time through the WAN. Maybe is backup set generation and physical transfer of the backup set along with technician and restore on-site required and/or practicable. For backup of Domine, think about replication. This might cause less bandwidth consumption comparing to TSM backup. (2) if you want an backup server (tsm or not) in each of this sites, you have apparently got a problem with both budget and administration, in fact. this are only couple of points from more to be considered regards Juraj -Urspr|ngliche Nachricht- Von: Douglas Currell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: Mittwoch, 19. Re: TSM Server 4.2.2.10 from AIX 4.3 to TSM Server 5.2 on SUN Solaris 9
About a year ago I was involved in moving a 40GB TSM database from AIX 4.3 to Solaris 8. The first thing that we did was upgrade the TSM on the AIX box to the, then, current TSM version which was 5.1. A server-to-server export would have taken, quite literally, months. So the previous the database backup was restored with the dsmserv commands. I am at home and won't have all the details till I go to work on Tuesday. I can give you some good advice on this subject. Something that I certainly do remember is the necessity put database, recovery log, and stgpool volumes on raw disks. Please give me some advice or best ways to do that. Any hints and tips are very welcome and appreciated. Thanks in advance. Juan R. Retain TDP and non-TDP Data
The current situation at our establishment is as such: Four Domino nodes, Notes1=Notes4, are backed up with Tivoli Data Protection. Retver is set to 30 and this is beyond what the SLA calls for. This number can be reduced but a monthly non-TDP selective backup of each node is also desired that would be retained for six months. TDP Policy Change
Currently, Domino data is being kept longer than is required by our SLA and TDP is in use. I hope to update the domain and copygroups to reflect our lesser needs. This would then allow terabytes of data to be expired. Is it necessary to control the expiration? My fear is that expiration could carry on for a very long time and have performance implications. Any ideas on how to approach this would be appreciated. - Post your free ad now! Yahoo! Canada Personals
TSM Downward Scaleability
The organization that I work for deploys TSM quite sucessfully at its large main sites that serve some +4000 nodes. It is very apparent that TSM scales upwardly very well but I believe that scaling down is something else. MY question is this:How can similar services be delivered to sites where there are less than ten nodes, limited bandwidth, no system administrators and, most importantly, tiny budgets. The organization can comfortably absorb the price of software and TSM licensing for these sites but there';s no budget to equip each site with a dual tape drive library. What are the alternatives? An autoloader, for example.?? __ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca

Actlog the database
I have some ideas about the questions I'm about to ask but I need some other opinions. What is the relationship between the activity log retention period and the size of the TSM database. For example, the production database that I work with has a size of 52 GB and the actlog retention period is 90 days. Would the size of the database noticably decrease if the actlog retention was set to 7 days? (Extraneous info: I piped the output from q actlog begindate=01/01/2003 to file and the file is about 500 MB.) What is therelationship of between the Activity Log Retention Period and Activity Summary Retention Period. Can I view the summary only? Remote clients transferring GBs over WAN
The organization I work for has four main establishments. Typically, someone will go on mission to another establishment and perform a backup of his laptop. Since his dsm.opt points to a server that that is hundreds, if not, thousands of kilometers away, this backup will be done over the WAN and not the usual LAN. Occasionally, this user might even attempt to backup 1 or 2 GBs over the WAN. This obviously causes some problems. What to do about this? Blocking the port in the firewall comes to mind but that is not a real answer. Has anybody encountered this problem and what, if anything, did you do? At that point or shortly thereafter, stgpool volumes were spread between the internal disk and external disk and the the db/log copies were deleted. The current situation is that, after inspecting the output from q sessions, the client make contact with the server and then sits in queue for a very long time. Backing Up Windows XP, a multi-user system...
Perhaps, I wasn't clear enough in a previous message. My organization is planning a rollout of Windows XP and would like to take advantage of its multi-user capabilities. (do I hear laughter??). Attached are some screen dumps of the BA GUI and the prospective file layout should be apparent. In a perfect world, the data directories, (Data, Documents and Settings), will be backed up incrementally each day using the central scheduling service. Additionally each user should be able to backup and restore his files and his files only. Can this be achieved and, if so, how? From the feedback I've already received, it seems that from a practical viewpoint, this scheme might be unrealistic to implement - (multiple dsm.opts, use of nodename parameter, licensing issues, etc.). Other implementations could be acceptable if these basic requirements are respected: (1) Data is backed up by somebody/anybody daily (2) Individual useres can back up and restore their own data and, perhaps, other users'data as well. My current situation in the lab is as such: The administrator can backup and restore any file he so desires. John Smith, can run dsm.exe but cannot see, let alone, backup any subdirectories under: Distributed File System Local Network Removable John Smith can, however, backup entries under System Object such COM+ DB, Event Log, Registry, System Files and WMI. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you. __ Post your ad for free now! http://personals.yahoo.ca

TSM Reporting tool advice
My client has a Service Level Agreement with his customers that assures them of a minimum of one full (selective) backup of their workstations per year. There are currently in excess of 1500 workstations and 300 servers that are TSM clients. It is a simple matter to identify the workstations and schedule TSM to run the backups. What isn't so simple is to find/develop a tool that reports success or failure of scheduled backups via e-mail or some other such means. My client prefers commercial-off-the-shelf products so Tivoli Decision Support will, obviously, be investigated. Does anyone know of any other products that could be used? I have not heard anything encouraging about Tivoli Decision Support and if doesn't work out then I'll be writing my own tool with the ODBC driver and the TSM API, (probably on a Windows platform :-(. Has anyone done this before. Please don't question the wisdom of promising users a yearly full backup of their workstations - it's a done deed! I know that the restoration of a TSM database onto a new platform type is unsupported. To be specific, an organization I know of has standardized on Solaris as a Unix platform. In keeping with this policy, they would like to see the current TSM server, an older RS6000/AIX model, replaced with an E450, for example.
