  Hi to all!

Export-Import to move TSM

2004-02-17 Thread Juan Jose Reale
   Hi all!

I will realice the import/export operations to move a TSM Server from AIX to
SUN, but I doubt about the storage pools. Well, I have more than 30 Storage Pools.
Do I need to have those all storage pools name defined on new server (target server)
that was defined on the source server? But I don't want to replace the library. That
is, we will use the same library.
Thank a lot of any sharing of informations.

2004-02-16 Thread Juan Jose Reale
Okay, but Is it also necessary to install el current TSM version on Solaris 8 in
order to do a server-to-server export between AIX and Solaris?. After it, have you
realized a restore of database backup from server (AIX) to another server (Solaris)?
  Thank you.

About a year ago I was involved in moving a 40GB TSM database from AIX 4.3 to Solaris
8. The first thing that we did was upgrade the TSM on the AIX box to the, then,
current TSM version which was 5.1. A server-to-server export would have taken, quite
literally, months. So the previous the database backup was restored with the dsmserv
commands. I am at home and won't have all the details till I go to work on Tuesday. I
can give you some good advice on this subject. Something that I certainly do remember
is the necessity put database, recovery log, and stgpool volumes on raw disks.

Backup via LAN

2003-10-09 Thread Juan Jose Reale
   Hi to all

Do you know if it is possibility to perform a backup via LAN in AIX without the
available rmtX ? After I ran cfgmgr -v, I ran lsdev -Cc tape but they didn't show
up the list of available rmtX. Is it not problem for backup via LAN?

I am using 4 drives 3584 library.

I look forward to your reply.

TSM Client 5.2 is compatible with TSM Server 4.2 ?

2003-10-09 Thread Juan Jose Reale
   Hi everyone!

I will install the TSM Client 5.2 in AIX 5.1 System Operative, so I am unsure
about the compatible between TSM Client 5.2 and TSM Server 4.2.2.7. This means:
can TSM Client 5.2 work with TSM Server 4.2.2.7 ?

Now I am running TSM server 4.2.2.7 in other server AIX 4.3.

Other question: Can TSM Client 4.2 can run in AIX 5.1 System Operative?

I look forward to your reply.
   Thank you.

Backup via LAN for me means you do not have any tapes connected to the TSM
client system. So there might not be any rmtX devices and this ought to be
normal.

Juan,

Whatever ip address you supply in the dsm.sys file for TCPSERVERADDRESS whether it is
a css switch or 10/100 Ethernet, it does not matter to AIX. You will be limited to the
performance of the network. You have to run cfgmgr -v to allow TSM to walk the Device
Bus and locate your tape drives on aix and they should show up as rmt devices.

Some of you know how many HBA's (Fibre Channel Bus Adapter 1000 Gb/s) we

2003-08-15 Thread Juan Jose Reale
Hello!

Yes, I am using LAN-Free backups via SAN, but I have one HBA (Fiber
Channel Adapter - 100 MB/sec) for accessing drives and other 4 FCAs for accessing
disks (SHARK). We have two switches (directors) ED-500 and 2 switches MC-Data
ES-1000.

I think we have to get other three more FCAs for accessing better speed of
drives. Is it correct? It means in the following: if we will reach 240 MB/sec (80
* 3) via 3  FCAs,  that is  864.000 MB / h.
170 / 864000 = 2 hours. If we will use 3 FCA to our drives. Is it correct?
I hope again your comments.
Thank you very much.
Juan R.

Hi

Assuming it are LANFree backups, via how many HBA's are you accessing your
drives (and disks)?
I think the HBA and or the SAN-switch will be the bottleneck (if you have
1Gbit/sec adapters/ports).
Let's say you will reach 80 MB/s via 1 HBA, that's 288.000 MB/h
170/288000 = 6 hours if you use 1 HBA to your drives and many tapedrives

This assumes that you have a seperate HBA for disk and that there is hardly
any other traffic on that part of the SAN.

If you can reach each individual drive (or each 2) via different fabrics,
things change.
Then one can easily calculate the amount of drives from the specifications
of the drive.
Let's say these drives can reach 30MB/s. Then one needs at least 4 drives to
finish in 4 hours.

We reach our 3590 drives via different fabrics and get with 2 drives a
throughput of 250 GB/hour for our SAP-backups (AIX).

Maybe you should have a look at flashcopy and/or TDP for ESS for SAP/R3.

Regards Jeroen

  Hi everybody!

We are going to purchase a LTO Ultrium Ultrascalable tape library
3584 model L32, but I don't know yet how many drives we need for running
TDP for R/3 (Oracle) on IBM 6M1 RS/600 in under 4 hours.
There are 8 CPU's (750 Mhz) with memoria real = 10 GB. The SAP
database's size is about 1.700 GB or 1,7 TB. The TSM Server 4.2.2.10 are
running on IBM MB80 RS/600. The TSM server is on the separate physical
server from SAP database.
We are using disks SHARK IBM.

So, please tell me how many drives recommend to allocate in Library
3584 in order to take a SAP database backup in under 4 hours.

Thanks in advanced.
Juan R.

Extras drives Ultrium LTO to reduce backup SAP's time ?

2003-08-14 Thread Juan Jose Reale
 Hello.
I have a LTO Ultrium Ultrascalable Tape Library 3584 L32 and this library has three
(3) drives LTO Ultrium I (First Generation). Every day the TDP for R/3 (version
3.2.0.8) takes backups online of database's SAP (Oracle) through TSM Server 4.2. This
TSM Server is running on an RS/600 with AIX 4.3.3. With these tree drives LTO, the
backup lasts between 7 and 8 hours and the average transmission rate was about between
200 GB/h (62 MB/sec) and 260 GB/h (74 MB/sec). This database's size is 1.660 GB.
Well, As I need to reduce the backup's time till 4 hours or down, how can I find out
this solution? Must I allocate others extra drives in order to reduce the backup's
time? I am not sure if it will be reduce the backup's time with the others drives
Ultrium because I have proved the backup with four drives and his time was not reduced
and his result was the same 260 GB/h (74 MB/sec).
I need your comments and I very much look forward to hearning you.
Thank you very much.

Re: Extras drives Ultrium LTO to reduce backup SAP's time ?

2003-08-14 Thread Juan Jose Reale
Hello, Becky
1)-Production's SAP database is about 1.700 GB.
2)-The tsm server is on the other server separate from SAP database. The TSM server is
on 7026-B80 IBM server (3x375 Mhz) and the SAP database is on 6M1 IBM Server (8x750
Mhz)
3)-I am using SAN network with switch Mc Data (ED5000 Fiber Channel Director 2032-001)
4)- Yes, we have a multiplexing of 4.
5)- We have 8 processor CPU on the SAP database server.
6)- We are using disks SHARK IBM (3.2 TB).

I have the following questions:
1)- Which is the average transmission rate when you are backing up a 2 TB Sap database
on 10 drives?
2)- Which kind of drive are you using, LTO Ultrium I (First Generation) or LTO Ultrium
II (Second Generation)?

Regards.
Juan R.

How large is your SAP database?
Is the tsm server on the same physical server as the SAP database?
If not what kind of network do you have between the two?
Are you using multiplexing in TDP for R/3?
Is your CPU maxed on the SAP database server during the backups?
What kind of disk is your SAP database using?

I am backing up a 2+TB SAP database on 10 drives in under 6 hours. We have
a multiplexing of 6.

Becky
