Hi *,
we want to check out a DB2-backup. We backup our DB2-DB over the DB2-api in
the TSM. The data are stored in a 3494 library. Now we want to move the
tapes in a other location (out of the library, for example a safe).
What is the best way to move the data out of the library???

Best regards,
Frank

db2 backups are API backups and you coulnd not see them with admc -id=client

backup * command
you can see them with db2adutl or db2 get db history commands

Gentlemen,

Does anyone know or have some reliable configuration steps for DB2 for
Windows NT online backup using the TSM client ?

My environment is this:
= TSM Server 5.1.1.0 running on a Windows 2000 Server machine
= TSM Backup-Archive Client 4.1.2.14 running on a Windows NT Server 4.0
SP6a machine with 2GB RAM

The regular backup is running fine, but I need to backup the DB2 instances
without having to stop them or the DB2 services.

Thanks in advance.

Re: DB2 +INFORMIX--------TSM

2002-10-02 Thread MUSTAFA BAYTAR

Hi Muthyam ,

1.For db2 backups you don't need any special configuration for sys opt files but you
must define
DSMI_DIR , DSMI_CONFIG and DSMI_LOG parametes
in db2 environment profile. For example like this.

DSMI_DIR=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin
DSMI_CONFIG=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/dsm.opt
DSMI_LOG=/db2/AGP/adsm_log

i have not any experience whith INFORMIX backups.

2. You can take DB2 32 bit instance backup to TSM.

3.I'm using one tape stgpool for all my db2 backups.

4.In my configuration db2 backup inactive logs directly to TSM.

I have few basic questions like...

1. How to configure sys opt files to accept both backups at a time.
2.Can I take DB2 32 bit instance backup to TSM(documentation shows it should be
64bit).
3.wich way works better for db2 backups to saparate stgpool.
4.How logical log backup works with DB2 .

I appriciate if anyone sharers there experience in taking two kind of backups to

Re: (Silly?) DB2 Backup question

2002-09-21 Thread MUSTAFA BAYTAR

Hi Bill,
Yes you will be able to restore the database from online backup but before online db
restore you
must restore db logs that have been active during online backup into log_dir
directory and after
restore you must rollforward db to end of logs .for successful restore you need only
logs than have
been active during online backup if you want point in time recovery than you need all
logs that you
have taken after backup
Main difference between online backup restore and offline backup restore is that you
dont need logs
during offline restore.DB2 specialist recommendet at least one offline backup per week.

There is a redbook, Backing up DB2 Using TSM SG24-6247 that has sample
scripts for different full/log backup retention using the DB2ADUTL utility.

I have this running using only ONLINE backups plus the DB2 user exit
supplied by TSM for transaction log archiving. My biggest question has been
if I only take ONLINE backups with the LOGS will I be able to restore the
database, or do I need to do occassional OFFLINE backups to be able to
recover?

I also believe that the ONLINE backup does backup the log records that have
occurred during the backup.I remember reading something about this
somewhere, but I can't find it again. So I won't say I'm 100% sure about
this. I do know that after an ONLINE backup the DB2ADUTL shows me with
additional LOG backups, too.

Log files are absolutely required if you are performing online backups.
 A. the database has to be in logretain mode to allow an online backup
 B. all transactions that occur during an online backup only go to log and
won't be captured in the backup AFAIK.
Otherwise logfile archiving is only necessary if you are interested in
recovering the data that was committed after the last backup, if it is
acceptable to lose all the data that is entered between backups then there
is no need to archive log files.

The practice I use is to perform offline backups every night (my outage
window allows this) and log archives whenever a log is released, the log
archives have a 30 day retention. Or you could hack together a script to
backup the released logs and then delete them after the next successful
offline DB2 backup so that TSM marks them as deleted.

Hi guys and girls,

this question is one of the general sort, so forgive me if it has been
answered here or in some manual I haven't red yet. Probably, I just need a
simpler description.
AFAIK, there are three ways to backup a database:
1. Offline filesystem backup
2. Offline backup in the databases quiesced mode via some api
3. Online backup via api

The first question I have is about the transaction log archiving. With
which of the above does it make sense and why? The second one: does it make
sense to run offline AND online backups in a backup cylce, or will one of
them be save enough? I read through the TSM Redbook on DB2 UDB
implementation. It just explains the ways RDBMS backups can be done not
which combinations are useful. As far as I could extract, it is rather
useless doing offline backups and log file archiving but no online backups,
right??

Thanks in advance

Lars

Re: replacing all 3590 with 3590 extended

2002-06-13 Thread MUSTAFA BAYTAR

Hi Eliza ,
We have 4 onsite pools and 2 copypools.I have defined our K tapes to all onsite pools
as private .J
tapes are still scratch.
TSM use only K types for onsite operations , copy storage pools operations use only
scrach volumes
and they all are J tapes.

Yes, but how? There is only one scratch pool and tapes are allocated from
this scratch pool as needed when the primary tapepool is backed up to the
offsite tapeback. Is there a way to define 2 scratch pools and allocate
primary tapes from the Kscratch pool and offsite from the Jscratch pool?

 Hi TSMers,

We are looking into replacing 1200 3590 J tapes with 600 3590 extended length
K tapes to make room in the 3494. While the state is cutting 9% of the
University's budget, it is a tremendous waste to throw away 1200 perfectly
fine tapes. Now my boss wants to know if there is a way we can use the
J tapes for the offsite storage pool only. I looked throught the Admin
Reference and there doesn't seem to be a way to do:

backup stgpool tapepool tapeback scratch=no volumenames=file:listof3590

 Any suggestions?

Dear all!

Our db2 v7.1 online backups on AIX have been working succesfully for 7 days,
but now, we get the following error:

db2 = backup db swp online use adsm
SQL2062N An error occurred while accessing media
/db2/db2tjd/sqllib/adsm/libtadsm.a. Reason code: 610.

The problem doesn't seem to be due to
unavailabilty of the dsmclientV3.cat file (everythig had worked fine for
seven days,
and the specified linked file exist).

Following, the explanation of this API error message

+
Explanation: The system is unable to open the message txt file
(dscameng.txt or dsmclientV3.cat for AIX). On the AS/400 platform this
file is QANSAPI/QAANSAMENG(TXT).

System Action: The system returns to the calling procedure.

User Response: Verify that the dscameng.txt file is in the directory
pointed to by DSMI_DIR. For AIX, verify that the dsmclientV3.cat file has a
symbolic link /usr/lib/nls/msg/locale

We have an AIX client that has an extremely large number of files that is
taking a very long time to go through the inspection process and then fails
backing up because the TSM client is spending all the time allotted,
inspecting and never has enough time to backup the actual files. We've
talked to level 2 and they said something about a new feature (no ide what
version it will be in) that will have some sort of monitoring capability so
it will know what files have changed during the day, and then only back
those up at night instead of checking every file and every directory.
Anyone know anything about this or have any suggestions on how to get this
AIX client to successfully backup instead of spending so much time checking
each file? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Hello, all. We have a problem in restoring the udb restore to an
aix-tsm-client node.
The backup is previously taken on a different aix-client. Both with the
same version 4.1.2.0
tsm-server version is 4.2.1.9. (for example from aix102 db-backup to
aix401 db-restore).

We tried the options of setting dsm/dsmi dir/config variables, and 'set
access a/b * * *'.
We tried the method of changing adsm-node name (password) on adsm-server
temporarily.
On both the methods, db2adutil list commands, (and nomal client restore
across nodes),
worked fine.

But udb-restores always failed across nodes (but works on the same node).

Some of the db2adutl and restore outputs are as shown below.

I appreciate if any body has a detailed steps or method/s for a successful
restore.

2002-02-14 Thread MUSTAFA BAYTAR

Keep Mount Point

Select whether the node should retain the tape mount point for the entire session.

Yes Specifies that the node must retain the tape mount point during the entire
session.

No Specifies that the node will release the tape mount point if policy
definitions cause data
to be stored in a disk storage pool after storing data in a sequential
storage pool. The
 default is No.

Maximum Mount Points Allowed

Enter a number from 0 to 999 to specify the maximum allowed resource usage by this
node. A value of
0 specifies that tape drives cannot be acquired for storage operations. Data storage
operations must
be contained within a disk storage pool and server operations like migration will
manage putting
data on tape. A value of 0 does not prevent a retrieve operation from acquiring a tape
drive. A node
is always allowed to acquire at least 1 tape mount point for the purpose of data
retrieval. Entering
a value other than 0, limits the node to the specified number of tape drives and
prevents the node
from monopolizing all of the available tape drives. This parameter is optional

Hi

Can anyone explain to me very slowly what the parameters: MAXNUMMP and
KEEPMP means when I define a new NODE.
The default is for MAXNUMMP 1 and for KEEPMP no

I backup first to disk and during the day migrate to tape, just my database
(Sap, Exchange ?) I backup directly to tape.
Did those parameters can affect performance ?.. I made a little test trying
to backup a same node (large client novell 5) once to disk and once to tape.
I got a very big difference on performance , to tape took a very long time.

Any suggestions will be appreciate.

HI,

We are running TSM 3.7.4 on an AIX 4.3.3 Server. Recently we upgraded the NT clients
from 3.1.7 to
4.1.3. After the upgrademost of the clients were unable to log into the server.
We kept on getting password expiration problem. As a result, we reset the passwords
for all nodes
that expired. However, the passwords work for a while and they expire. Any Ideas ?

Maybe its a false error. Do you have enough tapes available to the tape
pool? Do a query stgPoolName f=d and look for Maximum Scratch Volumes
Allowed: and see how that compares to the number of tapes in use.

Also try a query drive to make sure all the drives are available and
defined to the correct devtype.

Mustafa,

I encountered the same problem after installing drivers for ATM NIC's on TSM
v3.7.3; NT. I didn't want to restore the database, since the last one that had
run had failed. Since it was unlikely support would address it until it was the
latest fix level, I installed v.3.7.4 patch. The server started up fine after
this.

Cheers,

Re: AIX BA Client Backup Problem

2001-06-28 Thread MUSTAFA BAYTAR

Hi Kelly ,

DB2 logs all changes to the database in log records.Your DB2 logging them into
/db2logs/NODE/
path..
and probably S0007932.LOG is active during backup.
I dont't know which logging you are using but if you using circular logging you don't
need to backup
these logs.
if you are using archive logging , when a log file is filled with records ,the log
file is copied to
directory log_archive by the db2 logging user exit.
Once all changed pages referenced in the online active log files have been witten to
disks , the
online active log file is deleted. The copied log fie in the
log_archive directory is now offline active. When directory log_archive fills with
offline logs
you must archive them using DB2 control center or another tool.

I think simply put /db2logs/NODE/ into your exclude list and escape from this
situation.

The problem is probably related to your TCP/IP configuration. Attempt to
'ping' your ADSM server as soon as the error occurs.
In addition, use 'query opt' to check the following settings on your
ADSM server:

1. COMMTIMEOUT is on 60 (sec.) by default; increase to 900.

2. IDLETIMEOUT is on 15 (min.) by default.

Parameter COMMTIMEOUT is reset by the following ADSM command:

Hi all,

I am using TSM 4.1 and TDP for SAP R/3. We are taking daily online backup(Monday,
Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and weekly offline backup (Sunday). We have
6 sets of
online/daily backup and 4 sets of offline/weekly backup. After every days backup we
take TSM DB
backup and VOLHISTORY and DEVCONFIG backup.

Now to reuse the tapes used for TSM DB backup we have to issue the command DELETE
VOLhistory with
option TYPE=DBBACKUP and TODATE=mm/dd/. But this command deletes all DBbackup info
prior to date
mm/dd/. I want to delete volhistory info only for one perticuler day. Can anyone
guide me how to
do this? Because on every online backup day (say Monday), if i delete volhistory info
for last
Monday, it deletes volhistory info for last Sunday/offline backup as well. Where as i
want to retain
offline backup volhistory info for one month.

Please guide me how to delete DB backup volhistory info only for one perticuler day,
so that i can
retain volhistory info prior to that day as well.

All suggestions are most welcome.

We are using TSM 3.7 , TDS 2.1 , TSM Loader 4.2 and UDB 5.2 .
TSM Loader and UDB are at same NT machine.I have had similiar problem during
implementation.
on NT machine I defined user TDS who have sysadm and syscontrol prliviliges. After that
i created
database and tds tables with user TDS.
During DB2 ODBC setup i entered this user for user id and password required to
access DB2
database.
After that problem was resolved.

A colleague is working on implementing the TDS / TSM integration. We're
using TSM 4.1, TDS Core 2.1.1, TSM Data Loader 4.2 and UDB 6.1 (on AIX).

Any attempts to connect from the TSM Data Loader on NT to the AIX UDB
database is failing; we can however show that the ODBC connection IS working
(likewise, the ODBC connection to TSM 4.1 IS working).

Are there any guru's out there who have got this combination working and
would be willing to exchange a few eMails???

Thanks

Tony - Shouldn't DSMI_CONFIG point to the options file itself,

Subject: 3494 Convenience I/O category

I'm trying to determine the number of tapes that are in the convenience I/O
station of a 3494 tape library. I thought that I had found the answer on
Richard Sims' QuickFacts page:

3494, count of cartridges inVia Unix command:
Convenience I/O Station 'mtlib -l /dev/lmcp0 -vqK -s ff10'

However, I'm having trouble getting the mtlib command to produce the
results that I was looking for. When I run this command, I always get a
count of 0 returned, even when we've just ejected tapes and they are still
in the I/O station. The same is true if we've just inserted tapes into the
I/O station, and they are still in the process of being stored in the cells.

Am I missing something? Is the category FF10 correct for cartridges in
the I/O station? When I query with other categories, I get the results
that I'm expecting.

Is there a master list of the valid categories for the 3494?

Thanks in advance,

Ted

Anyone know the command on a 3494 library to checkin volumes using the
barcode only. I added 300 new tape to my library and it wants to mount each
one instead of just using the barcode. What is the typical command you
guys use to check in new scratch tape on a 3494.

Is anyone running SAP with DB2 and backing it up with TSM? If so, what
versions of software are you using?

We have version 7.1 UDB EEE but only backing it up with ADSM 3.1.06. The
dba's think that we can not upgrade because SAP has not blessed any new
versions and they may run into problems. Unfortunately, they are way out of
support with TSM due to the level they choose to remain on. Does anyone
know what version of TSM the SAP software recommends?

Any help would be appreciated.

All,
Does anybody know why wouldn't db2 backups expire, when, in theory, they
should be?
We have an AIX-SP environment, with TSM 4.1, server and clients. DB2 data is
backed up via the TSM-API. The copygroup criteria for this data is: versions
exists=1; versions deleted=1; retain extra versions=1, retain only
version=3.
DB2 backups have been occurring weekly since mid-November 2000, yet none of
the DB2 backup images have ever expired. We run inventory expiration daily.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
