San volume crashes every time TSM backs it up

2007-01-03 Thread Mark Hayden
I have multiple San volumes that get backed up by TSM. We are running
5.2.3 client and 5.3.4 on Server. The problem is with one large volume (
Over 5 million Objects) , seems to send the Cluster (Novell) Server into
safe mode. It offlines the rest of the San volumes ( Which run fine
during backups) , as soon as it is backing up v017: Not sure how far
along it is getting into V017: , but I believe it is long into it by the
object count. See below. IS there a object limit? We have about 2.5
million without the v017: .

Netware 6.5 upgrade with sans

2004-09-22 Thread Mark Hayden
Hi All, we have upgraded our NetWare servers to 6.5. I will try and make
this as clear as I can, we have a Novell cluster with 4 Servers. We have
sans attached to them. TSM does not treat them as a cluster. I have
installed TSM to each Novell Server and treat them as any normal TSM
client. IN the inclexcl.dsm file, I just exclude volumes that reside on
the other 3 servers. So if these volumes get pushed over to any other
Server within the cluster, they will NOT get backed up. This is the way
we want it, due to Novell cluster server and TSM not getting along. Up
until this last upgrade of NetWare 6.5 this worked fine, we ran INC
backups daily and TSM would see all the Sans volumes assigned to each
Server within the cluster. What has happened since the upgrade is SPEED
(or lack of) of backups , and as you will see below we have to tell the
Tsm schedule to include the sans volumes. has anyone ran into this
problem? We are running 5.2.2 on the client with TSM server code of
5.2.2.1. Adding the volumes to the schedule is one thing, but take a
look at how long our backups are now taking. This is also very slow
when doing restores. We have just added NetWare SP2 as well, but did
not help.

Re: Novell Cluster (San volumes not getting backed up)

2004-06-23 Thread Mark Hayden
Thank You, will let you know what works.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 6/23/2004 7:57:59 AM >>>
Hi Mark,

I ran into a similar problem on another backup software.

As this software isnt Novell Cluster aware (which ones are?) we had to
in
the end run the TSA with a /nocluster option.

BUT, before you rush out and do this, this presented its own problems
as the
disks are now presented to the backup software on both the physical
nodes.

We wrote a script that figured out which node was the active node and
only
backed that client up with a client side command line. (surely TSM will
have
somethign similar). This meant that if we wanted to do a restore it was
a
pain as we had to "hunt" between the 2 possible backup clients to find
the
correct date for restore.

If however only one of your clients will "always" be the active node
then
you should have less issues.

I hope this helps, slightly...

Regards,
Riaan

Sorry if this has been posted, but have not had time to read my
E-mails
for a while. We just upgraded our NetWare to 6.5 on all of our file
Servers. All is well, except the Sans on 4 NetWare Cluster Servers.
For
starters, we just back up these Servers the same as all our Novell
Servers. Tsm does not treat them as a Cluster. Problem, since we have
upgraded Novell to 6.5 TSM does not see the San volumes. I can add
these
volumes to the Object line in the schedule, but will only back up SYS
if
not. We are at 5.2.2.1 Server code, and 5.2.2 on the Novell
clientHas anyone ran into this???? Thank you for your help.

All backups are done through the LAN.

In order for TSM to see all of the SAN volumes, we had to change the
Novell
clustering NLM from 'auto' to 'manual' This would indicated that the
TSM
client is not Novell clustering aware.

Maybe the same for you?

Karel

Subject: Novell Cluster (San volumes not getting backed up)

Restore Oracle

2004-06-21 Thread Mark Hayden
Hi all, we are in the process of moving our Oracle Db to a new Unix
machine running Solaris for the OS. We have always used the same OS and
Unix, but we are going to a bigger and faster machine. The IP will stay
the same. The hostname will stay the same as well. Our plan is to just
do a Archive of all the Oracle file systems on Friday night. I have
already loaded TSM client on the new box, which is not on the network.

After the Archive Friday night, we plan on switching to the new Unix
box, adding it to the network and test simple backup and restore. If all
goes well, start the retrieve from the Archive and be done. Do you see
any problems with this? I did not mention that the Solaris OS and file
systems are identical on both Unix machines. If this seems ok, my other
question is, can I restore the TDP for Oracle from TSM, or do I have to
reinstall the TDP? It may be just as easy to install the TDP, but just
wondered...Sorry for the long text.

Netware 6.5 and TSM 5.2.2

2004-04-19 Thread Mark Hayden
Every question seems to relate to Novell when I am on here...We just
upgraded our NetWare Cluster servers (4) to 6.5. Upgraded TSM to 5.2.2
and all seemed well. Until I started to look at the log reports and
found out TSM was not backing up the San volumes on the Cluster. It will
back up the SYS: volume on all Clusters , but will not back up any SAN
volumes associated to the Cluster. I have not changed anything on TSM
and have upgraded all my other Novell clients without problems. Granted
all the other Novell Servers are not Cluster Servers, but has anyone
seen or had this problem? Thank You!

Restore (Novell client) with compressed volume

compression on to the new volume, but Is there some issues with doing
this? I know in the past, we always told our Novell Admin's to turn

Netware upgrade to 6.5 and TSM client upgrade 5.2.2

2004-02-05 Thread Mark Hayden
Hi Gang, wish I could repay you guys for all your help you have given me
in the past, but once again, need some help please.

We have just upgraded our NetWare servers to 6.5. In the process, we
are also upgrading the TSM client to 5.2.2. The backups seem to be
running ok, but I am getting a "Sytem program Error" that I can't find a
answer to. Below are my logs from a Client we just upgraded both the OS
and the TSM client. You will see after the Jan. 3rd backup, that we
start seeing a lot more errors, which most are just open files. But in
both the DSMerror.log and the dsmsched.log, you will see the System
program error. I will also include my Dsm.opt file as well. Thanks
for all your help...

Archive of client not showing up on TSM gui interface

2003-10-27 Thread Mark Hayden
Hi all, this is one Novell client that we run monthly archives on the
first of every month. We run TSM 5.1.5 on the client. The Novell client
is 5.1. We run incremental daily and all seems to be working fine. We
keep the archives for 365 days. Over the past 3 monthly archives
(aug, sept, oct), we can no longer see the archives on the Web. I can see
the remainder of the previous months on the web except the 3 in
question. I just noticed this due to needing a retrieve of Oct. The
client logs for the 3 months looked good. Gave me the totals and all was
good. Today, thought I would look at the command line and did the
retrieve with the -pick option. The 3 months are out there and TSM knows
about them, and am retrieving the data as we speak. My question is, why
are these 3 months not showing up in the web?? Thank you for any
help on this

Remove IPX

2003-09-22 Thread Mark Hayden
Has anyone ran into any problems with this: We have lots of NetWare
Servers that TSM backs up. We have been removing IPX from these Servers
a few at a time. Most of the Novell Servers are at remote sites. Most
seem to work fine after the IPX has been removed. We have one up in our
Chicago region, that does not seem to work after we remove IPX. It will
ask for the NetWare password, and then give Login denied...We add IPX
back and all is well...This seems to be the only Server to do this...Any
idea's? Thanks

Running TDP scripts using Oracle OEM

2003-06-24 Thread Mark Hayden
Hi All, This is another question to one I already have out there. What
we want to be able to do in a short disc., is have TSM call our TDP
scripts from Oracle Enterprise Manager instead of creating multiple
scripts. So TSm would call OEM and run the correct TDP backupThis
may be asking too much, but wondered if anyone had tried this...Thanks

2003-06-24 Thread Mark Hayden
Below is a question from our Oracle DB...Any input please!

Sorry, I should have put more in my message. We are running TDP 2.2 for
Oracle, so we have installed both the cTSM client and the TDP. This
resides on a Unix box running Oracle 8.Both the client and the TDP
have a API to Install, and I chose the client API, due to higher
versionThis has worked fine in the past, but not sure why this OEM
needs a another or different API...Thanks

Will you contact IBM and find out if they have an API to interface
between Oracle's OEM and Tivoli?

retrieve to another node

2003-05-29 Thread Mark Hayden
Hi all, This one is a little different. We moved data from one
client to another back in December. We removed the old Client from the
Network. Theses are both NetWare Servers. The old client was a NW 4.1.
The only thing TSM has for the old client is Archive data. Also, the
only NW Servers we have in the Network are NW 5.1. So I am trying to
Retrieve a old Archive from the NW 4.1 client that Physically does not
exist anymore.

So what I have tried to do, was take a current NW 5.1 client and change
the DSM.OPT file to reflect the old NW 4.1 client...Seems to work fine.
Start my command line retrieve and it comes back with the TSA is not
loaded and craps outI have done this with 2 NW clients that are both
still online. My question is, am I going about this wrong, or can
this not be done...Thanks

Netware Memory question running the scheduler

2003-03-05 Thread Mark Hayden
I have been reading about a option called " managedservices " that you
put in the dsm.opt file to help resolve memory problems that the TSM
scheduler causes by not releasing the memory back to the NetWare
ServerWe have had ongoing problems with this forever. I would just
like to know if anyone is using this option on any NetWare clients
Thanks

I would like to try this with the option" managedservices schedule" to
see if this helps What do you think?

Client install on Unix (Also running TDP for Oracle)

2002-09-18 Thread Mark Hayden

Question, we just finished installing just the client on a Unix machine running
Solaris 8. We upgraded the client to TSM 5.1 When we did the PKGRM for just the Tivoli
client software, (did not remove the TDP for Oracle) we noticed that we could not
bring the Oracle DB back up. It was looking for a file called libApiDS.so which is
located in the API/BIN directory of the client. So when we removed the TSM software,
we started to get the error. My question, does anyone know why and what this file is
used for Below is the actual error.

How has it worked for you and do you run this as a procedure, or only when you think

Is there a simple one time program to run , that will make the changes for me

Expiration fixed somewhat

2002-02-07 Thread Mark Hayden

Thanks to all that helped with my Expire inventory locking up. We now run expiration
for duration =300. should finish at 5:00 p.m. what happens, it will be expiring data
fine and then kinda hose up again. It stops deleting files for a hour maybe 2. Then
will continue again, but at a turtles pace. It also will run much longer than the 300
minutes and finish. My question now, is why would it run past the 300 minutes, and do
you think we still have a issue. Sometimes this will run a extra 2 to 3 hours before
ending. It does not give any errors or damaged files. Thanks

I should at least be happy that it is completing now.

Expiration

2002-01-16 Thread Mark Hayden

I have been running with ( skipdirs ) when running expiration. I started this about 5
months ago, because expire inventory would lock up on me. It has run fine since the
skipdirs has been added. My concern, I have not got any archive tapes back in about
the same time since running skipdirs. My question is one, can this be the reason I
have not recieved my archive tapes to be called back from off-site? And my other
question, is how do I go about fixing this experation problem? Thanks

DRM

2002-01-07 Thread Mark Hayden

Hi everyone, got a question in regard to DRM for a Sun Client. We are currently
backing up our Sun machines with TSM. We also back up the / root
/ usr /opt filespaces to a Dat tape separate from TSM. This is for DRM. I have heard
that TSM has come up with it's own way of getting the OS backed up for a client such
as SUN. Something like a MKSYSB Any Help would be great!!Thanks

Archives

2001-12-12 Thread Mark Hayden

We have set up our Policy Domain for Archives to 365 days. We have been getting tapes
called back from storage, but does not seem to do it Monthly, which is when we run
archives..It has been 3 months since we have recieved any back. I changed our backup
retention grace period on the Policy Domain, but did not change the Archive retention
period. I am just trying to troubleshoot this and wondered if anyone had any
input...When I updated the P.D. , it changed the activation date and wondered
if this would then change the retention period to start 365 days from that date, which
was October 10,2001..Thanks!

I am trying to locate a file that was backed up. The file is not in the directory that
was told to meI would like to try and see if it's in the DB. IS there a way from
the command line to query a file name for a node?

Disaster recovery

2001-09-25 Thread Mark Hayden

We have a Novell server that lost it's hard drives last night. It is under a NDS tree
with multiple servers within the tree. would like to know the quickest way to get back
to operation. We have reinstalled the new drives. The Novell OS has been installed. Do
we have to authenticate back to the tree with NDS before restore or can TSM restore
NDS and the some SYS files from outside the Novell tree? Thanks!

Client change

2001-09-06 Thread Mark Hayden

Hi all, we are in the process of moving 2 Novell Servers into one new Server.
I know Tsm has a way of retaining the historical data and transfering it over to a new
client name. I have not done this and wondered if anyone out there has done this and
with what success...Please help! What are the steps to have this done? Should we
run a full backup the night before we move the data? Just not sure how this
worksThanks!

Moving Data from one client to another

2001-08-30 Thread Mark Hayden

We are changing our Novell Servers (Upgrading Hardware). In the past, our Novell
support group has been moving the data on there own, loosing the Historical data from
the old client in regard to TSM. I have not done this with TSM! Just wanted to find
out how? How did it go for you when you finished?

Moving a node from a policy domain

2001-08-30 Thread Mark Hayden

We have a Policy Domain called Novell, with 25 nodes on it with backup retention (25)
and Arcive retention (365). What I want to do, is move 2 nodes off of this and create
a new Policy with these 2 nodes. I am going to have them go directly to off-site
storage, or straight to tape and then off-site.(to free up library) I want to keep the
Historical data if possible. Can I move 2 nodes of the 25 on one Policy to a new
Policy Domain???

Expiration

2001-08-29 Thread Mark Hayden

Running expiration , we were having problems with it hanging up and not finishing. I
added skidirs=yes and EX. started running fine and deleting thousands of archive
objects and backup objects. Has not hung since. My question is what is going on with
the directories , I assume that it is not deleting, and how do I now delete them?

Server- AIX 4.3.2
TSM - 4.1.1
