Re: SV: TSM 5.5 (CLIENT/SERVER)
Hi, One of our two TSM servers hit with TSM table locking at 5.5.0 with performing a long running restore. We upgraded to 5.5.1 and have been in a steady state since. TSM OS AIX, 5.3 Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition 5.5.1.0 currently However, our second TSM server which backs up to a CENTERA Device. We have open service calls with AIX and TSM support working on the following issue. We collected a bunch of data which both hardware and TSM support is currently working on. After upgrading this TSM server from 5.2 to 5.5 we began to experience paging problems on the server. So, bad in fact that AIX started killing processes. The only change we had made that started this issue was to upgrade from TSM 5.2 to TSM 5.5 and installing a SDK 3.2.1 install seperately for the Centera piece. I would be interested if anyone experienced the same issue or if anyone is using a Centera with a similiar environment and if you are experiencing any issues. AIX 5.3, ML 3 TSM upgrade 5.2 to 5.5.0 and install of SDK 3.2.1(with newer version of TSM server install of SDK must be installed seperately. It used to be bundled in the with the TSM upgrades). Moving a Wintel node to a new piece of like hardware
Hello TSMers, What constitutes the TSM server to backup a node which is moved to a new piece of like hardware and keeps the same nodename and ip address? We are migrating a couple servers from a remote location that are currently backing up to a TSM server at this remote location which is at TSM server version 5.4.1.0 and AIX operating system at 5.3. There are a few nodes that will keep their current node names and current ip addresses but will be moving to a new piece of hardware. We are exporting nodedata and policy information to LTO tape and then importing that information into my TSM server. My question is when I go to do the first backup for this node to my TSM server , Will my TSM server see this as a new node and back it up as a full the first time or will it be business as usual and just perform an incremental backup. Richard, Thanks for the reply and suggestions. We have a tried a few of your suggestions.IBM TSM support did have us run the following show commands.I just tried to run 'show memory' on this server and had to break out of the command because it began to cause failures with object retrievals memory/paging.AIX is having us run perfpmr as the next troubleshooting step so hopefully that will help us get down to the bottom of the memory hog. IBM did have us run a few commands that I left out from original email. 1. restart the dsmserv process 2. collect the output of 'SHOW ALLOC' one time per hour for the next 48 hours. Also collect AIX command output for 'ps aux | grep dsmserv' at the same time. 3. at the end of step 2 collect the last 48 hours of unfiltered activity log Nancy Backhaus Enterprise Systems HealthNow, NY 716-887-7979 Richard Sims <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" 07/28/2008 11:03 AM Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" To ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU cc Subject Re: [ADSM-L] Memory Issue: Since Upgrading TSM Server from 5.2 to TSM 5.5 and installation of Centera SDK 3.2.1 - anyone experiencing similar problem? Nancy - Confer with your AIX people on identifying processes using the most memory in your server system, where 'ps' and various other monitoring facilities can report what's using what. In TSM, you can use the SHow MEMory command to report a summary of memory usage and the SHow ALLOC command to report by module. SHow THReads will report what threads are in play. Also, note that you are running base level TSM code, with no maintenance, which is not a good idea. Memory Issue: Since Upgrading TSM Server from 5.2 to TSM 5.5 and installation of Centera SDK 3.2.1 - anyone experiencing similar problem?
Hello, I was wondering if anyone is experiencing memory issues since upgrading to TSM server 5.5 and installation of Centera SDK 3.2.1? Starting with TSM 5.5 the Centera SDK had to be installed separately where in the past the Centera SDK was part of the install package. We have noticed that since upgrading our TSM server from 5.2 to 5.5 that large amount of memory is being used which we suspected it was coming from the dsmserv process. Each time the pages are freed is when we have killed the dsmserv process. We made NO changes to the OS and the only change was the upgrade of the TSM server from 5.2 to 5.5. We opened a call with IBM TSM support which in turn had us run some data collection scripts for a few days. In summary, IBM confirmed that a large amount of memory is being used. It is not being used by any dsmserv subsystem however. We opened a ticket with AIX support which in turn rerouted the ticket back to IBM TSM support. We are hashing out where the ticket is supposed to be assigned and worked. Meanwhile, there has been no movement on the call and was curious to see if anyone else using the Centera SDK and TSM 5.5 has experienced the same problem. Sometimes you decide to migrate a node from one policy domain into a different one. Then it's very convenient to have the same names for the Mgmt-Classes as before. In general we don't name the standard/default MC, it just stays "standard" in any PD. For MCs we often use names that reflect the settings for the main 4 parameters, like 3-2-30-60 or 2-1-7-7. We use "0" for the nolimit value, like in 0-0-14-14. In addition to this we have some short-forms like RET14 (=0-0-14-14), sometimes we add a special MC name to make a customer happy. And of course, sometimes it gets cryptic, when you need to put additional information into the name, like in 4-3-50-80-SHDY (shared dynamic). If you have more than one TSM server, try to keep all PDs and MCs in sync - makes moving nodes between servers much saver. Just imagine what happens if the new server doesn't have the new longtime- protecting special MC and you find out just after the restore request arrives. I haven't tried more than two max processes for one of my larger pools.I have 12 disk pools (drives) tied up until 8am or longer, plus not to mention the impact to the client backup/thrashing. Backup Window is: This includes client backup, and mainframe job scheduler hooked in. Data writing to all 12 disk pools from 4pm -8am Starttime: 4pm Endtime:8am Currently: Backups occur during 4pm > 8am *I would tie up those drives from 4pm-8am TSM DB backups: 7am - TSM DB full backup *problem already, clients are overlapping tsm db backup. Not good. 8am 4pm - Disk Migrations to Onsite tape occurs -12 disk pools 9am -10am :Expiration runs daily 10am -checkout script runs to take dr tapes offsite *problem which my backup from last night isn't in the checkout, but the backup from the previous day. Between 2pm-8pm: Backup onsite tape to offsite tape pools * problem, that data from the night before is still in the library so it is not going offsite until the next day...yikes. 9am - 12am -running onsite 10 onsite tape pools reclamation throughout the day, as migrations end. Based on your config I'm guessing you're having trouble completing the backup stg operations due to the fact that you get a single large process running to a single tape drive (or tape to tape) and that's taking too long. I would suggest using the copystg parameter on the primary tape pool and have that large database go directly to the primary and copy pool tapes simultaneously. That will eliminate the need to do the backup stg tapepool copypool operation during daily processing. I would also backup stg diskpool copypool before I migrate. Again, the goal, I assume, is to get the backup stg operations completed as early as possible. So in summary: 1. Large stuff goes directly to tapepool with copystgpool set to copypool. You have plenty of tape drives so there should not be any conflict during the backup. 2. backup stg diskpool copypool maxproc=10 (or whatever) first thing or maybe even start this during the backup window (careful with that as that can slow the performance of client backups and the backup stg operation). 3. Simultaneous with that, backup stg tapepool copypool (just in case something when afoul). 4. backup db 5. prepare 6. Then do the migrations and other housekeeping chores. With the number of tape drives you have, I'm thinking with this rearrangement you should be able to get the work done. I don't think a VTL would help you anyway! We are working with Level 2 Support at TSM for now.DB2 is not using the DSMI_CONFIG file at all even though the setup looks correct(comparing .profile, environment variables, dsm.opt, and dsm,sys files with other successful clients that back up to TSM from DB2). Just ran a trace to confirm that it isn't picking up the dsm.opts' file. We did find out from Level II, That when we ran the 'db2adutl' utility (which we did see a session connect /end to the TSM Server activity log) uses the operating systems shell and not the API. In order to do online backups, your logging configuration in DB2 should be set to archive logging. But your DB2 admins will probably know about this. Next, make sure you setup all TSM_ (except TSM_PASSWORD) parameters in the DB2 database to default. Although i use PASSWORDACCESS generate, i had to set the nodes password in the database config. DB2>CONNECT TO ; DB2>UPDATE DATABASE CFG USING TSM_PASSWORD IMMEDIATE; DB2>UPDATE DATABASE CFG USING TSM_NODENAME NULL IMMEDIATE; DB2>UPDATE DATABASE CFG USING TSM_MGMTCLASS NULL IMMEDIATE; DB2>CONNECT RESET; When you set any of the other parameters to anything but NULL, DB2 tries to apply them to the backupjob, which in return will fail. Have you rebooted the DB2 host, or restarted DB2 after setting the DSMI_* vars? Last, i would think that the DB2 user (or the user starting the backup process) cannot read the file you mention (libtsm.a). My reason codes 137 never mentioned a file (It is on Windows though). Have you checked the permissions on that file in relation to the active user? Good Luck. Gr. Re: Domino /TSM Question
Joe, When do you run your inactivate logs? We run the compact on Friday Sat and Sun -fulls Inactive logs- after the fulls complete Incrementals (Mon-Friday) All the dbids shouldn't have changed in 1 or 2 days, and I am only getting zinged on Monday Incrementals(which is really a full), not the rest of the weekday schedule. Our compact runs on Fridays for a few hours, then the full on Saturday(1st email server), and Sundays(2nd email server), then the incrementals (Mon-Fri)- and the Mon night incremental is catching all the databases again, but not on Tues, Wed, etc. Also, the inactive of the old trans logs after the full backups completed on Sat and Sun.We used to the run the compact during full backup, but changed it for 'best practice' to Fridays instead of during the full backup. Questions: Is there some process running after the full that is changing the DBID? Does this also backup all 1800 on Tuesday? We had this scenario one week and luckily figured it out quickly. For us, the full ran Saturday, then on Sunday they ran a compress on all databases. The compress changes the DBID. Monday incremental caught all databases again. Our cure was to run database cleanup routines on Saturday, and do a full backup on Sunday. This has a slight risk if there is a problem during a cleanup routine, we might have to restore to previous Sunday and roll forward the entire week, but this is very rare (we haven't needed this yet.). Question - Migration
Problem: TSM doesn't have enough time during the day to drain all of the diskpools down to 0% before client backups start in the afternoon. So, on our declared disaster day, one of our critical small DB2 databases was still on disk never going to tape. Because migration selects the largest client with the largest amont of data, that small database is stuck in disk for multiple days never going to tape.I could seperate the critical servers into smaller disk pools as one solution, or collocate by group node data. Question> Is there a way to force all of a client nodes data in a diskpool to migrate to tape even though it falls below the low migration setting? I see settings in update stgpool to keep data longer in disk, but I want any data that is left over from yesterday to migrate first before starting with the largest client again. Background: TSM Server Extended Edition 5.3.2.2 AIX Operating System 5.3 Our clients all back up to disk pools first , then we backup the diskpools to onsite tape pools, then do a backup of the onsite tapepools for disaster recovery and send those tapes to an offsite location. Go to the TSM support page (see my sig below), then go to the bottom of that page and look for "Information Center", which links to the online manuals. Re: EMC Centera
I believe you have to have TSM DRP. We have recently implemented TSM, Content Manager OnDemand, and Centera as the storage device. Content Manager OnDemand controls the retention settings, and TSM is only the api to Centera. We have TSM Extended Edition. I believe in order for retention to be set in TSM, you need to purchase TSM DRP. I believe Centera has a base default setting, but in our environment we need at least 8 tiers of retention so we let Content Mgr OnDemand handle the retention. We find the following snippet in: Technical Changes for Version 5 Release 2 -- January 2004 EMC Centera Support ... Centera devices can also be used as standard storage devices if no mandatory retention requirements exist for the data. ... We have no "mandatory retention requirements" We just want TSM to control retention like he always has on other devices. Now, by following the FM closely we are able to get data written to, read from, the Centera BUT when our storage admin types do their periodic housecleaning, unbeknown to TSM, all the TSM data is deleted. Apparently there is an attribute of "deleteable" or "not deleteable" somewhere in that box and TSM is not setting it. Anyone have any knowledge/advice on how to get TSM and EMC Centera to agree on retention controls? David, Thank You for your help. I guess I will have to order a couple of silver sharpies. Sorry for the redundant traffic. I just upgraded a AIX 5.3 TSM server to TSM 5.3.1.6 and also installed the migration TSM 5.2 Web interface. The 5.2 Web interface basically works, but the center frame is missing. The left hand navigation bar is correct, but when I open up something that should produce content in the center frame, instead it opens a whole new window and puts the content there. I can limp along with this behavior, but it is annoying to have to go back and forth between two windows. This happens on every browser we try, both Explorer and Netscape, so it isn't tied to the browser I don't think. If this is an old topic I am sorry, I looked for it on the archives and couldn't find it. I have trouble believing it is happening to us, but no one else. Best Regards, John D. What are the correct steps when moving slots from one partition to 2nd partition
TSM Version 5.2.3.5 AIX O/S 5.3 Library - ADIC I2000 Scalar, partitioned library,10 drive & 2 drive IBM drives -LTO 2 We had to move slots over from one partition to the other(due to high utilization), pending slot/drive order. What is the correct procedure? Steps: Killed all processes/sessions audited the library (audit library ltolib checklabel=barcode, it was a successful) halted tsm(both instances) Library partitions taken offline Vendor changed slots TSM brought up show slots library - recognized the 24 new slots, but showed the slots being unavailable(only the new ones) ran an audit-the audit failed(couldn't recognize the new slots) We then redefined the library, and restarted tsm, then started processes, but then tapes wouldn't mount, although the library client would show the tapes in the drive. I killed the processes, but the process wouldn't complete until the tape eventually did mount in the drive, then the process would cancel. We reran the audit library- this time it show the new slots(barcode something -looked better than unavailable) then re-ran the audit, it was successful ,but still the tapes wouldn't mount So the library vendor had to reboot the i/o blade, kicked off a process...and the tape mounted quickly after that. It appears that I missed a step somewhere(although IBM stated that was the correct procedure, and that pending the library model, the library might need to be rebooted). Re: Anyone backing up Cisco Unity Product to TSM (Voicemail only)
I should have been more clear in my original email(sorry about that). I guess our network engineers know that Veritas is their only tested/certified solution, but wondering if anyone is backing up Cisco Unity with TSM. I am going to call IBM support now. Our Network Engineer reply, That very point was the go-around we had with Cisco and DiData. At this point, Cisco's position is that any solution can be used, but it is up to the customer to make sure it works, and if it causes problems on the Unity Server, they will require it to be removed before offering support. The backup jobs fail to start and the script reports back to the operator that it failed. After a retry the job works fine. The backup goes to disk pool first, then we backup to tape later. Re: CX700 ATA failure - Audit Storage Pool Volumes - Update
Here's the update of our events last night...sorry I didn't respond back last night, a bit busy :-) EMC came back and stated that there were bad sectors in the luns...9 volumes were 'toast' (900 gig overall in volume group) EMC rebuilt the luns effected Brought TSM back up, 9 volumes marked off-line jfs logs rebuilt disabled all sessions, except for a couple of effected 4 servers that had to have data restored (TSM Server down for some time) We ended up with the decision to delete volumes involved, then create new volumes finally started backups AIX Engineers and EMC evaluating the cause of issue 2 drives down. Our problem did not cause a loss of data. EMC had to bring down the whole thing and when it came back up the rebuild kicked off and everything was OK. We were told that if we had a more recent version of microcode then the rebuild would have worked from the start. Bottom line wait until EMC is done before you do anything because you may not have lost any data. Feedback - how are you using email archiving?
Background: TSM Server 5.2.3.5 AIX Op System 5.2.2.0, P650 box Library -ADIC I2000 Scaler, LTO 2 Drives Looking for feedback from the group. We have currently have a partioned library, 10 drives for all our system backup. The other library partition, with 2 drives for content manager. We are using content manager, via common store for email archiving. The problem is when there is a problem with the tape, there are thousands of small files on tape..and the restore of the tape is taking 20 hours to move the data off a tape. Seems that using LTO tape is not the answer with all of thousands of individual emails on one tape. Business SLA for email archiving is 24 hours. We are looking at increasing our disk pools, and keep all data on the disk...and of course, still keep offsite copy for DR purposes at this point. Interested in any suggestions? When I subsequently ran an AUDITDB on the database, inconsistencies were flagged up for that OBJECT_ID. I was using it to delete TDP for Oracle backups that the RMAN catalogue had 'forgotten' about, but with a file system client, I would recommend following the advice in IBM technote # 1166278. How to remove a single file from a TSM backup tape volume
Hello, Another question... Background: TSM Storage Manager: Version 5.2.3.4 AIX OpSystem: 5.2.2.0 I have a customer that is requesting that 2 files be permanently removed from TSM(classified type file)...including tape backup(which will be on tape for 180 days). Now I found the technote on Tivoli website - of the How to delete the file from tapeHas anyone tried that suggestion? I also checked the adsm.quickfacts sight... Search on ' File, selectively delete from *SM' -unsupported method, which looks like the IBM suggestion above. and the standard method. I am gonna try the standard method(seems like less steps too) but was curious if anyone tried the IBM suggestion? Thanks Again ;-) Nancy Backhaus Enterprise Systems [EMAIL PROTECTED] Office: (716) 887-7979 Cell: (716) 609-2138 CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: This email message and any attachments are for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain proprietary, confidential, trade secret or privileged information. Re: Where did my scratch tapes go?
Update... TSM - Version 5.2.3.4 AIX Operating System - Version 5.2.2.0 Thank You who all replied and the suggestions. Found the scratch tapes...we had implemented new stg pools(disk/tape) 2 weeks ago, one of our scripts did not have all the new dr pool logic in it...ooops. But, my next question is regarding trending..date stamp of my tape types, scratch, private, on-site,off-site, unavail, reado..and would like to see the breakdown in my stgpools...then import it into excel...to see a graph at any given time to see what pools are using what tapes. Right now I look at the actlog daily for issues. I am a beginner in SQL statements(arrgghh), and just got a book on KornShell. Looking to see what is recommended by other TSMers? What are other AIX folks using for trending? I have this sql..which helps. select stgpool_name, count(*) from volumes group by stgpool_name Nancy Backhaus Enterprise Systems [EMAIL PROTECTED] Office: (716) 887-7979 Cell: (716) 609-2138 Richard Sims <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 11/05/2004 02:07 PM To: Nancy L Backhaus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> cc: Subject:Re: Where did my scratch tapes go? Re: How to determine sense code means?
I looked at the activity log for the 2nd instance of TSM at the time of the error is occurring at night. Its only occurring on off hours for that 2nd instance, which brought me back to the act log. It looks like when our content manager(NODE9CM), starts it's session, the error/message occurs. This instance isn't seeing any activity right now between 6pm-10pm. So, after being idle, maybe this message is letting me know, that the 2nd library is waking up? But, I have to agree, that I like Richards' idea of get a video cam in-house to see what really goes on off hours in our Operations area...hahahaha.
