Corrupt MS-SQL backup? Can't restore

2007-03-21 Thread Niklas Lundstrom
Hello

My DBA tried to restore a SQL server backup yesterday but it didn't work so
well.
After about 7 hours this error appeared in dsierror.log:

03/21/2007 00:07:16 The 2068236851th code was found to be out of sequence.
The code (506) was greater than (258), the next available slot in the string
table.

The dsierror.log is 14Mb and is filled with the errormessage
I can't see any error in the activitylog.

Is the backup corrupted somehow?
We're running a new restore of an older backup now, hope that works

using BA client 5.2.2 while I am taking backups of Exchange server 2000 using
TDP for Exchange 5.2.2. My TSM Server is on windows 2000 and version is 5.2.2.5

Should I exclude entire directory of storage group files and transaction log
files entire directory? My aim is to backup the rest of the system using TSM BA
client and use TDP exchange to backup exchange and while restoring.. I will
restore entire system from BA client which will include Exchange configuration
and TDP exchange willl restore storage group and public folders if backed up.

Thanking you in advance ,... !!

When you encounter a problem like this, which is obviously a server defect, you
can search the IBM web site for an APAR. That turns up IC39957 and relatives.

SV: INCLUDE/EXCLUDE vs NO CLUE

2004-09-29 Thread Niklas Lundstrom
Hello

Skip the last \ at the exclude.dir statements.
Like EXCLUDE.DIR *:\Exchsrvr
Not EXCLUDE.DIR *:\Exchsrvr\

I always put the domain statement under the include/excludes, but I dont't know if it
does any difference..

Remember that TSM reads the optfile from the botton to the top, so if you have
include-statement further down in the file they will be included even if you exclude
them higher up in the optfile

Niklas,

It is looking at the Information Store service.

Sometimes this occurs when you are running under
a Windows userid that does not have Administrator
authority to view the registry. For example, this may
occur when you are running from a scheduler service
that is being run under a different userid.

If you are still having problems, please call IBM support
and a trace can be examined to find out what the problem is.

Thanks,

When I use the GUI I can backup my Exchange storage groups without

Re: Informix backup

2003-03-20 Thread Niklas Lundstrom
Hello

I'm not an Informix dba either...But it's pretty straigt forward

This is the backupcommand that we run as a preschedulercommand:

onmode -uy shutdown of database
ontape -s -L 0 E:\server\scripts\enter.txt
When you run ontape you have to press enter, the enter.txt files contain one
enter

onmode -mstarts the database

There are more cmdfiles involved since we are renaming the backupfiles and
moves them to another directory because the backup always goes to the same
file, backup.bup, and to save the backup you have to copy and rename that
file.
The onconfig looks like this:

# System Archive Tape Device

#TAPEDEV\\.\TAPE0 # Tape device path
TAPEDEV L:\Backserv\Backup.bup # Tape device path
TAPEBLK 16 # Tape block size (Kbytes)
TAPESIZE200 # Maximum amount of data to put on
tape (Kbytes)

We used to run onbar but the dba wanted to restore single tables and to do
that you had to shutdown the database and run ontape , don't ask me why it
couldn't be done with onbar..

Subject: Renaming a W2K node

AIX 4.3.3 running TSM Server 4.2.1.7.

I have a few client nodes that are W2K servers. Oddly, they are named after
our NT servers (NT-ServerA, NT-ServerB, etc..). The dsm.opt file contains
the NT machine name as the NodeName. I would like to change the NodeName to
W2K-ServerA, but not rename the machine name. ... I stopped the scheduler
service on the client node. ... I modified the name in dsm.opt, and saved
the file ... I renamed the node on the TSM Server (rename node nt-servera
w2k-servera, or whatever the command is... I actually used the web admin
GUI to do it). ... I entered dsmc query session at the command line of the
client node. ... ... it indicated it was node W2K-ServerA, requested the
user ID, and password.. I entered (defaulted) the ID, and keyed in the
password for that node. The information was returned as expected. ... I
entered dsmc query session at the command line of the client node, again.
... ... The information was returned as expected, without ID and password
being required (by the way, the opt file does have passwordaccess generate),
still indicating it was the new nodename, W2K-ServerA. ... I started the
service up... it started and quietly failed (no GUI messages on the screen).
I checked the dsmsched.log file, and it appeared that it attempted to
connect using NT-ServerA instead of W2K-ServerA.

Baffled.. so
... I checked to properties on the service.. I didn't see anything that
indicated NT-ServerA. ... I started the Backup/Archive GUI (vers 5.1.x) and
checked the preferences there. Everything was as I would have expected it
to be based on the values in the dsm.opt file, including the node name being
W2K-ServerA

After much searching of documentation and scratching of head, I punted and
changed everything (dsm.opt, nodename on TSM server, etc.) back to
NT-ServerA and the service started up and stayed up.

What am I missing to change the node name? Something is still using the old
node name when it attempts to contact the TSM server, and of course, that
nodename no longer exists on the TSM server. I did do some looking around
in that quickFaQ that Richard links to all the time... didn't find anything
in there that jumped out at me. Same with the last 3 months of ADSM.org
archives, and IBM's horridly slow and completely non-user-friendly support
pages.

I am lost...

Thanks in advance
Todd

Hello *,

I have a problem with some of my NT SP5 clients (running client 4.2.1.20
mostly, with a 4.2.1.9 TSM server on 4.3 ML10 server. I am trying to only
back up the c drive on a number of servers. I have tried putting the domain
c: line in the dsm.opt on the client (manually and via the wizard), saving,
stopping and restarting the scheduler service and it doesn't work. (I have
deleted all the files spaces of the type d$ or e$, but they reappear after a
plain ol' incr). I have put it in a cloptset just for those servers, and
specified the cloptset for those clients, and it still backs up the d$ drive
(but NOT the e$ that still physically exists).

Another weird thing I have noticed, is that when I deleted the filespaces
the were numbered like this:
c$ fsid=1
d$ fsid=2
e$ fsid=3

But after the deletion of the fsid's 2 3 and after an incr backup, the
newly backed up d$ has a fsid=4.

What gives??

Here's the cloptset:
(See attached file: CLOPTSET.TXT)

and the scheds all run as an unspecified INCR. Also, if I browse the client
thru the Web GUI or the user interface locally on the client's desktop,
those drives still show up and they don't have Xs on them, either.

I'm stumped.

Any of you good folk have an idea???

thanks!

Yes, you are correct. Create the new DB's and extend the DB and then delete
the old DB's. The data will migrate over to the new extended space. Any
reason you had 37 1GB volumes for your DB's. IBM told me not to really go
over 10 volumes on your DB and to be sure they aren't on the same drive if
you can help it.

I would suggest that if you could, create 5 8GB new volumes for a total of
40GB and move the DB over to the new 8GB partitions.

Re: Troubleshooting performance issues

2002-11-05 Thread Niklas Lundstrom
Hello

Your datatransfer rate seems low. Are you running at 100 mbit and full
duplex?
Try to ftp a file from the client to the server and check the transfertime,
with 100mbit you should get about 10mb/sec

Subject: Troubleshooting performance issues

I have some major performance issues during archive operations. I also have
bad performance durning backups, but the backup window is large so they
complete without any problems. I can't seem to put my finger on the
bottleneck and was wondering if someone had a document to recommend when
looking for performance issues?

Here is the scenario:

TSM 4.2.2.10 server on W2K (SP2)
3 IDE drives. OS - DB - LOG
100 Mbs/Full Duplex (not auto)
LTO 3583 SCSI attached to the server
Server Options:
CommTimeOut 60
IdleTimeOut 30
BufPoolSize 81920
LogPoolSize 512
TxnGroupMax 256
MoveBatchSize 256
MoveSizeThresh 500
UseLargeBuffers Yes
NOBUFPREfetch No
AuditStorage Yes
SELFTUNEBUFpool Yes
SELFTUNETXNsize Yes
TCPWindowsize 64512
TCPNoDelay Yes

There are 10 clients running 4.2.2.x (mostly 4.2.2.0). I have not set any
performance settings in the DSM.OPTs. The servers have less than 10 GB of
data each. I have 5 of them archiving to tape at the same time and they are
all running very slowly:

Does anyone know of a way to track the number of active sessions overnight.
I know you can schedule re-occurring QUERY SESSIONs and then count them. I
want to just get the number of active sessions say every 15, 30 or 60
minutes. I have to find the best place to move some backups but I don't
have way of tracking this.

Would that TSM MANGER product provide this?

Dear All,

I have an AIX node with TSM Backup client at 4.2.1.0 and a TSM server on AIX
at 4.2.1.10

I have PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE set in the dsm.sys, and I've set a
PASSWORDDIR. The first time I attempt to run a dsmc command as root, I'm
naturally asked to provide password details. This works fine and my command
runs successfully. A TSM.PWD file is created as expected. But when I run my
next dsmc command I have to provide the password all over again. And the
dsmerror.log shows the following message
sessOpen: Error 137 from signon authentication

The baffling thing is that I have this working just fine on another node at
the same level of client s/w talking to the same server.

Any ideas?
Thanks people,

We currently backup 12 Netware servers nightly, I also now need to backup
the directory structure as a seperate backup job. The reason for this is
that in a DR when you do a complete restore of a Netware server if TSM
attempts to restore a file before the dir for it has been restored it skips
the file, so the idea is to backup the dir's seperatly then come DR to
restore all the dir's then do a normal restore over it. What I need to know
is how would I got about backing up just dirs to a seperate pool?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

sorry if this is a repost!

firstly let me state that I am very new to TSM and have only picked up
bits and pieces from reviewing the list and some FAQ type docosso pls
excuse if this is a basic question...

We have several AIX boxes which have 'large' file systems...by large I mean
30Gig which contain multiple installs of Oracle sever s/w so
 thousands
of files/directories. (NB Not the database files them selves)

A selective backup of these is taking a 'significant' amount of time -
approx 4 hr to do a filesystem of about 35G...I have tried going directly to
tape - think it was even slower

so what I am looking for is some advice on the best settings for these types
of file systems

TIA

Answers/Comments to questions..

I have read all of the information about Journal Backups in the
Tivoli Storage Manager for Windows Using the Backup-Archive Client
 Manual and
also
the 4.2.1 READMe for NT and it seems that there is more
 information
needed
on the behavior of Journal-Based Backups!

Agreed. I am working on developing a redbook with guidelines for
understanding and deploying Journal Based Backup.

I have an NT 4.0 client with TSM 4.2.1.15 (I will soon be upgrading
 to
4.1.2.20) client installed which it processes approximately 290,000
objects
with about 2,200 (less than 1%) changing on a daily basis.

If the amount of daily change activity is less than 5% is it still
 beneficial to use Journal Backups?

This is an ideal environment for Journal Based Backup.

The primary performance benefit over normal incremental backup is
eliminating scanning the entire local file system.

When I first upgraded to 4.2.1.15 from 4.1.2.0, I decided not to
perform a
Journal backup on this particular client, so I DISABLED the service.
On
Tuesday, I started the Journal Service so it could begin its
journaling process and log any changed objects or its attributes in
the journal database. The backup still took 9.5 hours to complete
with the same behavior as without Journaling. So, I continued to let
 it run the next
night
and it still took 9.5 hours as well.

It seems as if the Journal Engine Service is not working properly!
 I
still
see sessions terminating due to the extensive processing/querying
 that
the
producer thread does while in an idlewait status.

Keep in mind that a normal full incremental must be done on a file system
being journaled to create a valid journal before journal based backup will
work.

If the Journal Service is stopped all journals are deleted and obviously
will no longer valid when the service is restarted so a full incremental
must be performed (and completed) before journal based backup will work
again.

The version 5.1 journal service has a setting to override this behavior,
that is to allow a journal to remain valid when the file system goes offline
or the service is stopped and restarted.

It seems as if the Journal Engine Service is not working properly!
 I

I think what is happening is that a full incremental is being forced because
the journal was deleted when you stopped the service.

Note that you can override journal based backup when a valid journal exists
by using the -nojournal option in the backup client..

Also, if anyone can explain this message it would be greatly
appreciated?

 psFsMonitorThread(tid 1044): Object 'C:\WINNT\Temp\TMP5.tmp' was
deleted
 after notification.

This message is erroneous and shouldn't be logged as an error (this is fixed
in the version 5.1 journal service).

Basically what it means is that a change notification was generated for an
object which was deleted before journal service could process the
notification.

I mistakenly thought this to be an unusual type of error condition but it
turns out to happen quite frequently when applications create and delete
temporary files in a very short time span.

Hope this answers your questions .

HelloI have a problem when running backup
of my MS-SQL db.The following message is from the activity
log.

01/09/2002 16:15:08 ANE4991I (Session: 17311,
Node: DP4PP2SQL) TDP MSSQL NT ACO3507 Sql Application Client:
Starting INCR backup
of
database model from server DP4-PP2.

01/09/2002 16:15:08 ANR0444W Protocol error
on session 17311 for node DP4PP2SQL (TDP
MSSQL NT) - out-of-sequence verb

01/09/2002 16:15:08 ANR0484W Session

It is only incremental backups that don't
work. Full backups works fine. The version is 1.1.2 of TDP, SQL 7.0 and
TSM-server 4.2.1 on MVS
It has stopped working yesterday and nothing has been
done on the server.

Hello

Does anybody know if
this problem has been fixed? Tivolis recommendation is to "applythe PTF
when available" but in the readme's for the latest PTF it doesn't say anything
about APAR IC31313.

Client version changed, unable to run BA Client

2001-12-13 Thread Niklas Lundstrom
Title: Message

Hello

We're using TSM
server 4.2.0 on MVS
Client levels from
3.1.5 to 4.2.1.15

Yesterday I noticed
that our large NT-fileserver couldn't connect to the server,
ANR0428W Session
3937 for node SPNT190 (WinNT) refused client is down-level with this server
version.

It turned out that
in the TSM server the node spnt190 showed a client version level of 4.2.1.15 but
the BA Client installed is only 3.1.5. Someone had restored files from the node
using a 4.2.1.15 client.
How do I change the
client version in the database to match the real version on the
node?
In this case I had
to upgrade the NT server to BA Client 4.2.1.15 to get the backups running
again.

Script to cancel certain sessions

2001-11-29 Thread Niklas Lundstrom

Hello TSM:ers

I'm trying to write a script that should cancel the sessions for certain
servers if their backup still runs at 9 am but I'm stuck. How can I do that?
It should be automated by a command script.
