TSM Client 5.3 Error ANS1028S when trying to backup directories with EDC8134I Stale file handle

2005-07-14 Thread Werner Nussbaumer
Hi all

for the following question a user gave me an answer:

Where a file server is that cranky and can't be fixed, I would take
such file systems out of TSM scheduled backups and instead
conditionally run them from a client OS script which performed tests
on the viability of the served file system before unleashing a dsmc
Incremental on it. I would not expect TSM client software to contend
with unreliable file systems.

Richard Sims

I mean, yes, I could just exclude those file spaces if I would have knew in
advance.

My question is: there are occasionally such file systems (I don't know what
developpers are dowing), however it is hard to predict.

But still my question:

How can I avoid that dsm simply stops further backups but instead how can I
instruct dsmc not to backup such filespaces or how is it possible create some
sort of exclude list. Nevertheles my question still remains: Why dsmc
produces an internal program error? I was able to scan through all directories
with a C or JAVA program. When there was a stale file handle my programs
continued to scan the next file handle.

Also is there any PTF? What is the statement of IBM?

Thanks four your help

What operating system are you using? I would recommend that you look up
the meaning of the ANS1028S error message and take the action suggested
therein, as this sounds like a possible bug to me: on the surface, I would
think that TSM should be able to handle this situation more gracefully.

How it is possible to avoid that dsmc stops processing the backup when it tries

2005-07-12 Thread Richard Sims

Werner -

Where a file server is that cranky and can't be fixed, I would take
such file systems out of TSM scheduled backups and instead
conditionally run them from a client OS script which performed tests
on the viability of the served file system before unleashing a dsmc
Incremental on it. I would not expect TSM client software to contend
with unreliable file systems.

For that matter, running out if disk space in writing the

No.

I'm running 5.2.3 clients on a bunch of Win2K servers, get 3-12
failures of files in use.
Doesn't result in the internal error you are getting.

Make sure the scheduler has adequate permissions to access the root of
the D: and E: drive.
If that isn't it, call support.

Re: ANS1028S Internal program error.

2004-05-13 Thread Bill Boyer
I had a SQLServer box that was getting this error at times and I opened a
PMR. here's the response. The client implemented the registry setting
described in the Q304101 article and the box hasn't failed since.

APAR IC38129 describes the ANSE ntrc.cpp failure, but this problem was
fixed in the 5.2.2.0 client version.

So the only other resolution for this issue is described as follows from
some information I found in another PMR:

Error code 1450: ERROR_NO_SYSTEM_RESOURCES - Insufficient system
resources exist to complete the requested service

The problem you're seeing here (Win32 RC 1450) is a common error that we
have seen during backups of big filesystems, or particularly large
files. Windows has a certain amount of memory pool space that it can
allocate to programs, and TSM is using the memory available from that
pool such that there is no more memory left to allocate. TSM cannot
continue the backup of this file since no memory is left, so the
operation has to stop. The limitation here is in Windows, and is not a
TSM problem (although TSM is the program using the memory). The
functions being called by TSM are perfectly normal and valid, and there
is nothing TSM can do at this point due to this MS limitation.

The following docs from the Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles describe
this error code.
Q304101 - Backup Fails with Event ID 1450
Q247904 - How To Configure the Paged Address Pool and System Page Table
Entry Memory Areas
Q142719 - Windows Reports Out Of Resources Error When Memory Is
Available
Q236964 - Delayed Return of Paged Pool Causes Error 1450 Insufficient
Resources
Q192409 - Open Files Can Cause Kernel to Report

INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES
There are some suggestions in document 304101 that involve changing
registry settings.

Hi all,

We are running TSM Server 5.2 on Solaris with Windows 2000 client
currently at 5.2.2 running within a 2-node cluster for the offending
client. I recently cut what was a backup of a single 200GB file into 4 x
50+ GB files of the same data and now my backup is failing with the
above error. The error log also lists ANSE ntrc.cpp(879): Received
Win32 RC 1450 (0x05aa) from FileRead() and I've tracked down RC1450
to a lack of resources.

Anyone seen this? I'm working on it at the moment and I seem to be
getting a steady increase in paged kernel memory that I can't explain -
but maybe someone out in DSM-land has already walked the same path.

Any help appreciated.

Backup Stopped by User message, ANS1028S

2004-01-20 Thread Marc L
Hello,

I am suddenly having trouble with a backup after it has been happily
chugging away for a number of years. Every night the TSM backup (4.1.2,
old I know) fails with this error in the dsmerror.log. This is running on
an NT4 server.

ANS1028, Internal Program Error. Please see your service representive.

When I re-run the backup from the GUI it sometimes fails with a 'Backup
Stopped by User' message.

It always fails on one partition in paticular, the other backups on the
client work fine.
I've checked the Event Viewer and there are no obvious resource problems.

Any ideas what I can try?

Marc.

I am suddenly having trouble with a backup after it has been happily
chugging away for a number of years. Every night the TSM backup (4.1.2,
old I know) fails with this error in the dsmerror.log. This is running on
an NT4 server.

Marc - I would first check that the system is not at disk space exhaustion
(or invoking user disk usage limit) as inability to write client logs
can cause this condition.
Look in the server Activity Log for any indications. Beyond that, I would
examine the area of the partition where the backup log indicates that the
process is stopping, and potentially run a disk check against the area.

Hi Marc,

In addition to Richards' usual words of great wisdom...

If you stop the 'server' process and restart TSM from a scrollable CMD
window..

cd to server directory
dsmserv -k servername

.. you may see some interesting information as the server starts up... look
for
msgs like unable to [open/expand] [database/logfile/storage volume].
Give me a shout if you need more help.

Don't forget to halt TSM *gently* afterwards and restart the 'Server'
service.

Good Luck

The problem was resolved. Apply of Service Pack 2 did the trick. Despite
the fact in Software Requirements section W2kSP2 is recommended not
required.

Hello all,

at a customer site backup or archive of a file fails. I think this is
related to size of the file (70,840,910,336 bytes).
Environment:
TSM server 5.1.1.6 / AIX 4.3.3
TSM client 5.1.5.0 / Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Upgrade to client 5.1.5.7 nor downgrade to 4.2.3.4 did not help.
Is any of you successfully backing up/archiving any file larger than 64 GB
on Windows? I have open PMR with support.

backups failing with ANS1028S

2002-11-03 Thread Chetan H. Ravnikar
Hi *SMrs

we have some issues with a fully working client,

 Platform: HPUX
   Client OS Level: B.11.00
Client Version: Version 4, Release 2, Level 1.0

running direct to tape on a server Sol-2.8 version 4.2.20 and we are
seeing that the backups are failing with the error code below. How do I
debug this, I don't see any errors on the server!
happened three times in a row!

thanks for all your help and time
