Re: Tsm client 5.1 fails to restore tsm 4.1 client backups ??
As I said earlier (see below), the ONLY Win9X client that is supported by 5.1 is Windows Me. The web site is in error and will be fixed accordingly. To summarize: Version 4.1: Supports Windows 95, 98, and Me. Goes out of service for most platforms at the end of June; goes out of service for OS/390 platforms at the end of September. See http://www.tivoli.com/support/storage_mgr/tivolieoc.html for details. Version 4.2: Supports Windows 98 and Me. Windows 95 is NOT supported. Version 5.1: Supports Windows Me. Windows 95, 98 are NOT supported. Tsm client 5.1 fails to restore tsm 4.1 client backups ??
Hello, Have a win98 client machine that had a hard disk failure. It was running TSM 4.1, so I install the new disk, and OS, and then install Tsm 5.1... but when I try to restore with the 5.1 client, it restores about 10,000 files and then consistently throws a generic application error and dies! When I install the 4.2.1 client and do a restore, it works fine.. I don't know if this is yet another case of TSM bugs, but these TSM clients sure have been pretty buggy lately Keith

Re: Tsm client 5.1 fails to restore tsm 4.1 client backups ??
remember, the general way the ~supported environment matrix~ works is client down one version.release from server client equal to server client ahead one version.release from server so the 4.1 client to a 5.1 server would place the whole environment so it falls outside the support matrix (ie, all bets off) but when you took the client to 4.2, that put it back into a slot in the ~support matrix~ I don't think we could call this specific case a bug since (due to their support matrix) that combination probably isn't tested and for sure isn't supported. sorry, I hated to say that... I'm sounding more like tivoli support each and every day :-( Dwight -Original Message- From: Keith Kwiatek [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, June 05, 2002 10:07 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Tsm client 5.1 fails to restore tsm 4.1 client backups ?? Re: TSM 4.1 Client with 3.7.4 Server
Roy I am not aware of any incompatabilities between a v4.1 client and a v3.7 server. We are running 3.7.4.4 servers on NT and have numerous Windows v4.1 clients without any problems. For what it's worth, I would recommend the 4.1.2.12 flavour of Windows clients - we've had various problems with most of the rest but these are not related to the server version. TSM 4.1 Client Install
Is anybody using the silent install for the new 4.1 client? Every NT machine I have tried it on has Dr Watsoned withmsiexec.exe (the new ms installer I presume) Other than that the client seems to install normally. If I run a manual installation there are no problems. Here is the command I am using: setup.exe /v"INSTALLDIR=\"C:\ADSM\" /qn" I took this straight from the readme file included with the client. I just changed the install dir. Jack
Re: TSM 4.1 Client Start-up
This is the opsys level: SunOS spadux0001 5.7 Generic_106541-08 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise All the packages were installed with pkgadd from the same official Tivoli-supplied 4.1.0 CDROM. I have since tried moving the client code to 4.1.1 (IP22087) with no change. I have now removed the 4.1 client and installed 3.7.2 client code, and this is fine. The server remains at 4.1 with PTF-1 installed. According to the 4.1 client Readme, it comes with both native 32 and 64-bit versions, and is supposed to install the correct one based upon your kernel mode. It sure sounds like you have the 64-bit client trying to run on a 32-bit system. Was the system in 64-bit mode when the client was installed, or was the software adopted from a 64-bit system? If neither, then there may be an error in the installation mechanism. If the installation job produced a log, review that to see what was planted. Consider repeating the installation to carefully watch what it does. Richard Sims, BU

TSM 4.1 Client Start-up
We have installed TSM 4.1 Server and Client code on a newly-built Sun/Solaris system. The server (+ PTF1) runs fine, but when we try to start the client code - DSMC or DSMADMC - we get the following error: $ dsmadmc ld.so.1: dsmadmc: fatal: relocation error: file dsmadmc: symbol _ex_register64: referenced symbol not found Killed Anyone got any ideas? TSM 4.1 Client on W2k Problems
Hello, I just installed the new 4.1 client on my Win2K system. About 30 minutes later without doing much with it I have 2 questions: 1. Tivoli's WWW page http://www.tivoli.com/products/index/storage_mgr/storage_win_2000.html states that the server utilities are rehostet as MMC snap ins. However, I can't find these snap ins. Is this a feature which comes with the server? 2. I tried in vain to install the ODBC support. The installer complained that I had not the necessary administrator privileges. However, I certainly used the administrator id. Is this still a language problem? Both, Win2K and TSM client are configured to use german language. Whether that's a correct description of someone is probably irrelevant. It's not a professional attitude to express and for that I apologize. I stand by my technical remarks, however, even with Mr. Raibeck's response. GUI environments such as Windows need an entirely GUI and as fail-safe as possible installation and tailoring. To their credit, I *can* somewhat tailor and then repackage. Does anyone still install from diskettes? Wayne T. Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] ADSM Technical Coordinator - UNET University of Maine System
Re: AW: Tsm 4.1 client.
Hi Eric, James, and everyone else, Yes, this is a "tradition" that we are not too fond of, either. As it turns out, the package that was uploaded to the FTP site was not corrupt per se; rather, it got uploaded in ASCII format rather than binary format. The correction was to upload it again in binary format. I like the idea of having our testers download the package from the FTP site and verify it is installable immediately after it's put out there, just as a final "sanity" check. This is something I will bring up back in the lab. Thank you for your feedback, Andy Andy Raibeck IBM/Tivoli Tivoli Storage Manager Client Development e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] "The only dumb question is the one that goes unasked." Hi James! I wasn't talking about support. I was talking about testing. Putting a corrupt archive package on your FTP server doesn't sound like thorough testing to me. Re: Tsm 4.1 client.
InstallShield for the Web was discussed and discarded since, as far as we are able to determine, it does not provide for a silent install. There are a lot of users for whom silent install is very important. As far as other methods go, we provide a companion .BAT file to help with the extraction (complete with HELP info if you just run the BAT file without a parameter), and a README.FTP file that tells you how to download and extract the install image. Re: Tsm 4.1 client.
When you extract the file, you need to use the -d flag. What is happening to you is that all the files are going into one subdirectory, and the setup.exe for the ODBC driver is overwriting the setup.exe for the TSM client. I'm sure TSM 4.1 is a "for a price" upgrade and you'll probably need the CD to do the base code install... I haven't looked into 4.1 yet though...
