Is there a way to tell if a given copygroup is actually being used on

Re: copygroups

AFAIK, the only way is to search the BACKUPS table.
OK idea if you can narrow the search to a single client at a time; bad idea
otherwise.

Avy -

I think you mean TSM clients, rather than servers...
This gets back to TSM concepts, where individual file system objects
are bound to management classes according to explicit Include
specifications, or implicit TSM rules; and the Include specification
of management class can change over time. Thus, a given client may
have objects bound to a variety of management classes. There is no
TSM concept of a client itself being bound to a management class or
copy group.

From the client, you can query sample backup or archive objects to
get a representative sense of what management class they are using,
currently.

No, you are talking about COPY POOLS, not COPY GROUPS.

Your SEQUENTIAL STORAGE POOL is defined with a DEVCLASS.
The DEVCLASS points to the library, LTO_LIB.

You will need a separate DEVCLASS defined that points to the second
 library, RMTTP_LTO.
Then create your COPY POOL pointing to that DEVCLASS.

Then in your SEQUENTIAL STORAGE POOL, add the COPYPOOL name.

Then anytime something gets written to the sequential storage pool, it
will get written to the copy pool, and the copy pool will be in the
 second library.

Antwort: Backup copygroups

2004-06-30 Thread Ralf Behrendt
Hallo Moses,

I although have to make a daily and a monthly backup on the server with
different retention periods.
I solve the problem by creating to policy domains dayly_pd and monthly_pd
where are different management classes.
On the node I use two different nodes hostname_day and hostname_mon
which are backed up in the responding policy domain with the responding
management class.
I have to use two dsm.opt files when i start the two schedulers
Use export DSM_CONFIG=$DSM_DIR/dsm.opt or export DSM_CONFIG
=$DSM_DIR/mon_dsm.opt in Script to start the two schedulers.

 Hi people,
I have a burning question which hopefully somebody can provide an
answer to. Have been asked to backup SQL servers daily using TSM . The
details and instructions for how these backups are performed and any
characteristics are contained in the respective management class of the
policy set in the policy domain. I also need to backup these servers at
monthend and some every five weeks. What I am trying to find out is if it
is possible to have more than one backup copygroup under this management
class. The reason is because the period backups will have different
retention times to the dailys and possibly different retain only version
 values.

Is it feasible to create two separate backup copygroups to manage this ?
If so how would you get the server to differentiate between if a backup
is
run daily or at the end of periods.

Once again any help would be gratefully received, examples would be even
 more gratefully received.

No, you can't have multiple active copygroups for a given management
class. What you'll need to do is create a second nodename (with its
corresponding option file which points at a non-default management
class).

However, you might want to consider short-term archives of data, rather
than backups. With that, you can use the ARCHMC flag to control archive
destinations and retention.

Mark,

Data Protection for SQL does not support ARCHIVE.
It only supports BACKUP.

You can use a second NODENAME like you suggested or...
you can also look into using SET type backups which get
a unique name and can be bound to a separate management class.

Thanks,

Del

Copygroups

2002-01-14 Thread Vint Maggs

How do you recommend setting up a management class that would allow me to
retain backups for 60 days while allowing a PIT restore to any date within
the past 60 days? I am thinking I should set the copygroup parameters
VERExists, VERDeleted, RETExtra and RETOnly to 60.

Does this seem correct?

Thanks,

yes is correct,
but you will know that in 60 days you can have a very lot of data depending
of the level of change and renew for client't data. (60 x
client_utilized_space ).

It's probably close. Deranged people such as myself might comment:

* If you are doing weekly backups, these numbers are way too high.

* If you sometimes do more than one backup in a day, the numbers could
be too low.

* If you want to do restores from the last 60 backups, 60 would be
right for verexists, but 59 would be sufficient for verdeleted, etc.

* It sort of depends on what you want to accomplish. Maybe a client
expects 60 days to be 2 months. Maybe bump 60 a little. Maybe you
backup every day, but client doesn't see a problem on weekends, so
maybe bump 60 a little. Maybe client tries to restore today, runs out
of time and comes to you tomorrow for help. Maybe bump 60 a little.

Of course, if you can identify the files which need this PIT
requirement, then considerable *SM DB and STGpool space and processing
time might be saved if you have a special management class for the 60-
copy files and something considerably less as standard ... but then
the client risks making a poor decision. :-)

cheers, wayne

Re: Copygroups

2002-01-14 Thread Robin Sharpe

That's Ok as long as you never do more than one backup per day. If for
example, you do a second backup, VEREXISTS=60 will cause the oldest one
from 60 days ago to be deleted. To be absolutely safe, you need to code
VEREXISTS= and VERDELETED=NOLIMIT. This is documented in the
Administrator's Guide in a section dealing with PIT restores.

There was some discussion on this last year. In short, you would need:

VEREXISTS=NOLIMIT
VERDELETED=NOLIMIT
RETEXTRA=60
RETONLY=60

Keep in mind that this means someone could make lots and lots of backups
of a file, and all inactive copies will be kept for 60 days from the time
they become inactive. In practice, this would most likely be fairly
rare... but if you are concerned, you might set VEREXISTS and VERDELETED
to 60 (or higher). But NOLIMIT this will guarantee the restorability you
seek. If you set VEREXISTS and VERDELETED to 60, then this will guarantee
the restorability provided that only one backup copy (at most) is made per
day. If some files are backed up more than once a day, than you would need
something higher than 60, i.e. 120 if up to two backup copies are made per
day.

For more information, you can check the ADSM-L archives at www.adsm.org.,
You'll find some (but not all) discussion about this if you use this
search criteria:
