Hi Wanda,

I recommend that you enable tracing, open a PMR,
and send the trace to IBM Support.

You can do that by adding the following to
the TDPEXCC BACKUP command:

 /TRACEFLAG=SERVICE /TRACEFILE=TRACE.TXT

The trace will tell the IBM Support team
exactly where the code is crashing.

Thanks,

Del

 Well, I'm stumped.
My customer has a 2-node Exchange 2003 active/passive cluster on
 Win2K3 R2 SP2.
TDP for Exchange is 6.1.3.3, Legacy backups.

Node 1 is usually the active node, and TSM works fine.

The TDPEX GUI on Node 1 works as expected. The client scheduler
service for Exchange is installed on node 1, is defined as a cluster
 resource, and works fine.

Node 2 is usually the passive node, and TSM doesn't work at all.

The dsm.opt file, the information store, the logs are on a
clusterdrive, I:.

When we fail Exchange over from Node 1 to Node 2, the I: drive
becomes available to Node 2, as it should, so the exchange dsm.opt
file is used on both nodes. CLUSTERNODE is set to YES,
 PASSWORDACCESS to GENERATE..

When we then start the TDP for Exchange GUI on Node 2, it creates a
session with the TSM server and authenticates OK (verified by
checking the server actlog). When you click restore, you can see
the available backups to restore as you would expect.

But when you click backup, you get the usual message updating
mailbox history, then the GUI dies without a whimper. No message,
 the GUI just vanishes.

If you invoke a backup via the command line from the \TDPEXCh
directory::

 tdpexcc backup * \tsmoptfile=dsm.opt \excserver=exch-foo
\logfile=foo.log

EXACTLY the same thing happens. You see the session established
with the server, no password errors. You see the updating mailbox
history message. Then the cmd line exits. The exchange log
foo.log shows the updating mailbox history message, nothing else.
No messages in dsierror.log, nothing in the Windows event log. The
server actlog shows only ANR0480W, indicating the session was
terminated by the client end. It's a mystery how it dies.

The box has been rebooted, and we've tried uninstalling and
 reinstalling the TDP.

I'm not having any luck Googling for an error message I don't see -
anybody seen behavior before that makes the TDPEXch session vanish
without a tra - um, error? Suggestions for search words?

 What am I missing here?
 Thanks for any ideas!

 Wanda

Wanda,

Have you tried tracing the activity of the process with Sysinternals'
Process Monitor? It might help in pinpointing at what stage exactly the
client exits. Maybe it is trying to read a registry key and crashes on that
or something. I've found Process Monitor very helpful in a number of
different cases in the past.

Cheers,

Rick

Re: How to find what management class is used per node

2010-03-09 Thread Grigori Solonovitch
Hello Dwight,
I have found your queries very good and developed some shell scripts, based on
your queries, to produce reports for:

1) Domain - Node - File Space - Destination - Management Class - Copy Group
Parameters (verexists, verdeleted,retextra, reatonly) for file backups;
2) Domain - Node - File Space - Destination - Management Class - Copy Group
Parameters (verexists, verdeleted, retextra, reatonly) for directories (to
control DIRMC);
3) Domain - Node - File Space - Destination - Management Class - Retain
Versions for file archives;
4) Domain - Node - File Space - Destination - Management Class - Retain
Versions for directory archives (to control DIRMC).

Shell scripts are quite good:
1) produce exact information about used MC, polls and copy group parameters for
all nodes;
2) running for acceptable time;
3) running without total overloading TSM Server.

Scripts provide information like this:

--
| AIX | Node1 | FS1 | SP1 | MC1 | NOLIMIT | NOLIMIT | 31 |31 |
| | | FS2 | SP1 | MC1 | NOLIMIT | NOLIMIT | 31 |31
|
| | | FS3 | SP1 | MC2 | NOLIMIT | NOLIMIT | 15 |15
|
| | | FS3 | SP1 | MC3 | NOLIMIT | NOLIMIT | 62 |62
|
|--+-+-+-+---+-+-+---+---|
| NT | Node2 | FS4 | SP2 | MC4 | NOLIMIT | NOLIMIT |8 | 8 |
.

Scripts were developed under AIX, but I think they can be used under any UNIX
with small modifications (see support for commands tr and od only).
I can provide scripts to anybody, who is interesting in this kind of reports,
by direct E-mail.

Hi,

what management class is utilized by node hmpg1018? Would I need to run:
select * from backups where node_name='HMPG1018'?

on the node itself run 'dsmc q backup / -ina -subdir=y'

(assuming unix, but you get the drift)

since each file can be bound to a different mgmt class, there is no such
concept of a mgmt class used by a node, and the client is the proper place to
run this query, not the server.

Re: How to find what management class is used per node

2010-03-02 Thread Huebschman, George J.
Avoid that if you can.
You probably can. If you can not, someone else will be able to.

* Normally the node uses the default management class for the domain;
then any MC specified by INCLUDE statements.

* Log onto the client and run q inclexcl. The q inclexcl command
will show you all includes and excludes in the dsm.opt, inclexcl file,
or client option set. Check the listing, looking for includes, then for
mgmt class names next to the includes.

* Also, directories will automatically use the management class with the
longest retention in the domain (unless the client is using a dirmc
option.)

You certainly can run a select against the largest of the tables, but it
should be done carefully. Smart folks advise against it. It is a very
intensive query. If there are many objects for this client, try to
limit the query as much as possible by using index keys. Try running
the select against one filespace at a time for example. If you have
many filespaces and that seems to tedious, it is an indicator that you
need to do it!

I was just wondering if anyone knows a script that I can run to find out
what management class is utilized by node hmpg1018? Would I need to
run: select * from backups where node_name='HMPG1018'?

Try these:

select distinct node_name as Node Name ,filespace_name as Filespace
Name,class_name as Management Class Name from backups
where TYPE='FILE' group by node_name,filespace_name,class_name

Node Name Filespace Name Management
Class Name

TSMCLI01 /tsm DEFAULT
TSMCLI01 /usr DEFAULT
TSMCLI01 /var DEFAULT
TSMCLI01 /wn001 DEFAULT

and the same for the archives table

you could always use the ~where node_name='HMPG1018'~ to limit the output to
just that node

select distinct node_name,filespace_name,class_name from backups group by
node_name,filespace_name,class_name

will show you everything, including directory information...

How to find what tapes were created for a full backup to tape

2006-03-01 Thread Joni Moyer
Hello everyone,

Every weekend we run backups of our NAS environment with NDMP protocol. We
create all of the onsite full backups and then the offsite backups run
following the completion of the full/onsites. What I would like to know
is, how can I tell which tapes were created for our offsite full backups?
I have a separate node defined for the offsite backups:
NAS_SERVER_2_OFFSITE and it uses a storage pool of tape_ndmp_offsite. Any
suggestions would be appreciated!

how to find out the date when a file became inactive??

2004-06-08 Thread Lisa Laughlin
Good morning *SMers!

Can anyone one help me out on this one?

I am severely brain impaired right now I have a request from mgmt to see
if I can find out when a file became inactive (i.e., when it was deleted).
I am pretty sure I have a recollection of finding out this information
before, but am at an utter loss right now to remember how.

Thanks Richard-- I was hoping it wasn't one of THOSE select statements-- I
started

tsm: TSM_HQ_2select deactivate_date, filespace_name, type, ll_name,
hl_name,dea
ctivate_date, class_name, state, backup_date,node_name from backups where
NODE_N
AME='GHDATA01DISKGROUP2' order by BACKUP_DATE

before I asked the list the question. This is on a clustered, SAN, Windows
2000 server with way more than a million objects about 800G of data on
it. I am just hoping I don't crash the TSM server before the select
finishes!!

Perhaps I should have only include the HL_name for the filespace I was
interested in..

2004-06-08 Thread Ben Bullock
As far as I know. There is no easy way to get this other than
the nightly backup logs, which typically are not kept too long.

I think you would need to run a select on the DB to pull that
one out. It looks like it is in the backups table. Here is a look at the
fields and how they are formatted:

  NODE_NAME: ADMIN-SRVX
 FILESPACE_NAME: /var/run
   FILESPACE_ID: 5
  STATE: INACTIVE_VERSION
   TYPE: FILE
HL_NAME: /
LL_NAME: syslog-ng.pid
  OBJECT_ID: 637355388
BACKUP_DATE: 2004-01-02 17:11:56.00
DEACTIVATE_DATE: 2004-01-11 17:10:49.00
  OWNER: root
 CLASS_NAME: DEFAULT

Perhaps something like this would get it:

select FILESPACE_NAME, HL_NAME, LL_NAME, DEACTIVATE_DATE from backups
where node_name like 'CLIENT-NAME' and filespace_name like
'/file/space/name' and LL_NAME like file.name

Or... Perhaps I'm smoking crack and there is a much easier way
to get this information...

Ben

Quickest way is to open up the TSM Restore GUI and go to the file and
from there you can tell what mgmt class it is bound to.

Quickest way, if the client is handy, is to start the b/a client and open
the RESTORE window.

Navigate through the file tree until you can display the file.
Scroll to the far right of the window, and you will see the management
class.

Or:

select * from backups where node_name='NNN' and ll_name like
'%partialfilename%'
NN must be upper case
the % in the filename is a generic match.
The letters you put in to match are mixed-case for UNIX clients, must be ALL
UPPER CASE for Windows.

I guess you could query the BACKUPS table, but that takes a long time.

The way I normally do it, I start the TSM client GUI (or web interface) and
go to restore. Find where the file(s) is/are and the management class is
displayed in one of the columns. You might have to scroll to the right to
see it. If you can't access that node, then from any node with TSM just run
the client with the -VIRTUALNODE= parameter to see the files for that node.

How to find zero byte files that are backed up ?

2003-01-09 Thread Cook, Dwight E
OK, I've had a question put to me and so far I just don't know...
With such viruses, as the ones that zero out files under windows, is there
an easy way to see if TSM is holding any zero-byte files ? ? ? (ie. check
from the TSM server for potentially infected client nodes...)

I tried testing under Unix (AIX) with a zero byte file and...
I thought that I might be able to look in the adsm.contents table for
file_size=0
but what I found is (two things)...
1) due to aggregates, the file size listed for most files is the
size of the aggregate
2) if you have a zero byte file, you won't even have an entry for it
in the adsm.contents table
The output of a show version doesn't list anything about filesize...

Anyone have any tricks to do such a discovery ? (of zero byte backed up
files)

Re: How to find zero byte files that are backed up ?

Dwight,

I wanted to let you know that zero byte files on the TSM
Server are OK for some things. For example, DP for Domino and
DP for Exchange use zero byte files that contain meta data
necessary for their restores.

So, once you find a way to query for this, you should be aware
that you might find some legitimate zero byte files.

Then again... you probably already knew this! :-)
But.. just in case people started querying their TSM Servers,
and seeing some of these zero byte files, I didn't want them
assuming they had a virus.

Thanks,

Sounds like one of those Dilbert manager assigned tasks...
TSM does not support the server administrator meddling with individual files,
not even to inspect their attributes: that can only be done from a client
compatible with the one which stored the files.
In any case, someone in your shop is flailing. The real solution is for
the PCs there to rigorously employ and automatically run virus scanning
software. Only in situ can viruses be properly detected and handled.

How to find obsolete filespaces?

2002-09-19 Thread Gerhard Rentschler

Hi,
filespaces which no longer exist on the node will stay on the server
forever. As they may consume considerable resources on tape and in the
database, we regularly try to find such filespaces and ask the owner whether
they can be deleted or not. We use the field Last Backup Start date/time
of q filespace f=d or the corresponding field in the filespaces table.
Unfortunately, I learned from responses to a mail earlier this week that
this field is not always updated (for example not by selective backups).
Is there another way to find out obsolete filespaces?
Best regards

how to find

2002-07-11 Thread Thomas Denier

Is there a way to find quickly which storagepool each client belongs to .?

The 'query occupancy' command will provide information on which storage
pools a client is currently using. If you use migration to shift backup
files from an initial destination pool to a long term pool, the query
command won't necessarily report the initial destination pool. The query
command won't warn of cases where a client could start using a new pool
any time because of changes in the include/exclude statements or because
of new files that match an include that did not apply to any previously
existing files.

Re: How to find out what data is on tape

2001-08-01 Thread David Longo

You probably had reclamations running that freed up these tapes.
They would be in a DRM state of vaultr unless someone had moved
them past that. If they are truly scratch, there is no way to see what
they were. If you do both a q vol and a q drm for each of
these tapes and get nothing, then there are scratch.

It'a always a good idea to do an inventory comparison between
what *Sm says is in vault and what offsite vendor says. Tapes can
get misplaced for various reasons. For all the automation of *SM,
this part (offsite excahnge) involves many manual steps.

I do an inventory about every two months and only find about 1 tape
out of place.

Yesterday I found 95 tapes in our offsite-location,
which don't belong to any storage-pools.

Normally the only two ways that a tape gets to the
offsite-location is, that it's a copy-storage pool
from our tape-pool, or it's a dbbackup-tape.

In our DRM-Environment there is a setting, which takes
care about the dbbackup tapes, so that they will stay
7 days in the offsite location before the ADSM-Server
wants them to be put back into the system.

Is there a possibility to find out what content is on
this tapes, which don't belong to any storage pools?
Further problem is that our volume-history and
activity-log only covers 2 weeks so in my opinion
there is no easy way to check for tapes to be reused
or for tapes with storage data.

Best regards

Perhaps you have a backup of the volhist backup file as
specified on your VOLUMEHistory server option, which
you could restore and examine?

Your plight is why I stress that Activity Log data *must*
be kept as long as the oldest-written tapes. Keeping it
all in the TSM db is too much bloat: we use Q Actlog
to extract old data and save it in opsys disk files,
which we store in HSM. We have 5 years worth, which
makes it easy to find out where a tape has been.

I can't help with Sql, but i wonder, why do you need tapes from offsite
for a client restore? Perhaps this will not help you now, but my
suggestion is, to backup your storage pool(s) and put the backups

Either way, I'm pretty sure that DISTINCT is supposed to
account for distinct rows in their entirety, and not just certain columns.
I'll have to look into this.

That's what I thought too. My guess would be something to do with the SQL
interface not being direct to the database - something going missing in the
translation.

Anyway, it's good to know I'm not going mad. :-)

In case you need to know, the system that produces these results is 3.7.4 on
Solaris, recently upgraded from an earlier 3.7 release.

Re: How to find out what tape's a client data are on ?

2001-03-02 Thread Bernhard Unold

I can't help with Sql, but i wonder, why do you need tapes from offsite
for a client restore? Perhaps this will not help you now, but my
suggestion is, to backup your storage pool(s) and put the backups
offsite. So for the next restore you will not have to recall a tape at
all from offsite. Ask me, if you want to know more.

This is not a case (no pun intended) of TSM being case-sensitive. Rather,
it is the standard SQL "is equal to" operator, '=', that is case sensitive

What would the command be to show utilization of the tape vs. the client's

H that doesn't look right to me, either. Just from observation, it
looks as if the DISTINCT keyword is operating on either the first column in
the result set, or maybe the sorting key, since you are now sorting by
storage pool name. Either way, I'm pretty sure that DISTINCT is supposed to
account for distinct rows in their entirety, and not just certain columns.
I'll have to look into this.

Just out of curiosity, since I've only casually been following
this thread, was there a specific reason for the "group by"
 clause?

I think what is desired is simplly an "order by" clause, e.g.

Well, I'm really confused now.

I came up with my own version of the query:

select distinct volume_name,stgpool_name
from volumeusage
where node_name='FOO'

and that produces an answer:

VOLUME_NAMESTGPOOL_NAME
-- --
ITF010 CPITFPOOL
ITF013 CPITFPOOL
ITF018 CPITFPOOL
ITF026 CPITFPOOL
ITF001 ITFPOOL
ITF003 ITFPOOL
ITF004 ITFPOOL
ITF014 ITFPOOL
ITF025 ITFPOOL
ITF027 ITFPOOL
ITF028 CPITFPOOL
ITF006 ITFPOOL
ITF002 CPITFPOOL

BUT if I add "order by stgpool_name" it doesn't show all the tapes - eg:

VOLUME_NAMESTGPOOL_NAME
-- --
ITF010 CPITFPOOL
ITF001 ITFPOOL

So what's going on here?

Re: How to find out what tape's a client data are on ?

I use this:
select stgpool_name, sum(physical_mb) from occupancy where
node_name='XX' group by stgpool_name

I have a frustrating situation whereby if I perform a client restore it may
call a tape from off-site. This tape is then recalled (usually 4 hours) and

that could possibly be requested for the client and recall all tapes. I can
find this out by running 'q vol client=X' but I have 2000 tapes to search

Here is the SQL script :

select volume_name,node_name from volumeusage where node_name='$1' group
 by volume_name,node_name

Just give the server name as parameter 1

I have a frustrating situation whereby if I perform a client restore it
 may
call a tape from off-site. This tape is then recalled (usually 4 hours)
 and
then placed in the library. The restore then continues but then stalls
 again
requesting another tape. What I need to find out up front are all the
 tapes
that could possibly be requested for the client and recall all tapes. I
 can
find this out by running 'q vol client=X' but I have 2000 tapes to
 search
and this will take a long time even if scripted . I think that what I
 need
is a SQL query. I am running 3.1.2.22 (don't laugh I am upgrading
 shortly)

2001-03-01 Thread David Longo

This is case sensitive. Your node name is probably MEDRS2. Node names (and some
other fields) are translated to ALL UPPER CASE when stored regardless of case when
entered.

Query commands don't care about case, select statements do.

You have to write exactly what TSM has in its database.

This is not a case (no pun intended) of TSM being case-sensitive. Rather,
it is the standard SQL "is equal to" operator, '=', that is case sensitive
when comparing strings. This is per the SQL standard, and is not specific
to TSM's SQL implementation.

Here is the SQL script :

select volume_name,node_name from volumeusage where node_name='$1' group
 by volume_name,node_name

Just give the server name as parameter 1

I have a frustrating situation whereby if I perform a client restore it
 may
call a tape from off-site. This tape is then recalled (usually 4 hours)
 and
then placed in the library. The restore then continues but then stalls
 again
requesting another tape. What I need to find out up front are all the
 tapes
that could possibly be requested for the client and recall all tapes. I
 can
find this out by running 'q vol client=X' but I have 2000 tapes to
 search
and this will take a long time even if scripted . I think that what I
 need
is a SQL query. I am running 3.1.2.22 (don't laugh I am upgrading
 shortly)

 Thanks for your time.

While your statement is technically true Andy, *SM does take the liberty

This is not a case (no pun intended) of TSM being case-sensitive. Rather,
it is the standard SQL "is equal to" operator, '=', that is case sensitive
when comparing strings. This is per the SQL standard, and is not specific
to TSM's SQL implementation.

Re: How to find out what tape's a client data are on ?

2001-03-01 Thread Thomas A. La Porte

Just out of curiosity, since I've only casually been following
this thread, was there a specific reason for the "group by"
clause?

I think what is desired is simplly an "order by" clause, e.g.

select volume_name, node_name -
  from volumeusage -
 where node_name = 'MEDRS1' -
   and stgpool_name = 'COPYPOOL' -
 order by volume_name, node_name

The group by function is necessary when there is a group function
in the "select" statement, e.g. when you are summing a value:

select node_name, sum(backup_copy_mb) -
  from auditocc -
 where node_name = 'MEDRS1' -
 group by node_name

Your select statement is incorrect. It should be:

select volume_name,node_name from volumeusage where node_name='MEDRS1' and
stgpool_name='COPYTAPE' group by volume_name,node_name

Re: How to find out what tape's a client data are on ?

2001-03-01 Thread Walker, Lesley R

Just out of curiosity, since I've only casually been following
this thread, was there a specific reason for the "group by"
 clause?

I think what is desired is simplly an "order by" clause, e.g.

Well, I'm really confused now.

I came up with my own version of the query:

select distinct volume_name,stgpool_name
from volumeusage
where node_name='FOO'

and that produces an answer:

VOLUME_NAMESTGPOOL_NAME
-- --
ITF010 CPITFPOOL
ITF013 CPITFPOOL
ITF018 CPITFPOOL
ITF026 CPITFPOOL
ITF001 ITFPOOL
ITF003 ITFPOOL
ITF004 ITFPOOL
ITF014 ITFPOOL
ITF025 ITFPOOL
ITF027 ITFPOOL
ITF028 CPITFPOOL
ITF006 ITFPOOL
ITF002 CPITFPOOL

BUT if I add "order by stgpool_name" it doesn't show all the tapes - eg:

VOLUME_NAMESTGPOOL_NAME
-- --
ITF010 CPITFPOOL
ITF001 ITFPOOL

So what's going on here?
