Re: Vertical vs. Product or service
This is correct, your bids for a campaign will only be considered for display in the content network if the campaign criteria match. The vertical criteria should have no effect outside the Google Display Network. Keywords are not assigned to products or services, a product or service has a set of keywords that are relevant, but a keyword may be relevant to more than one product or service at a time. The keyword tool can be used to find relevant keywords to your product or service. You can then do further research on the keywords returned to verify that they are actually going to create valued conversions for you. The keywords which have lower estimated cpc, but that you find have a strong conversion rate and contribute well to your quality score will get you the best ROI for your campaigns. Basically a vertical allows you to market to a specific audience. The product or service helps you find ways to reach that audience without targeting them exclusively. Try not to think of a product or service as being located in a specific vertical. There may be a vertical that seems to represent a product or service, but it is not that simple. A given product likely "belongs" to several verticals, and there are placements within each of these verticals that may not perform well for a specific product or service lending themselves to negative placements. -- =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~ Also find us on our blog and discussion group: http://adwordsapi.blogspot.com http://groups.google.com/group/adwords-api =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "AdWords API Forum" group. Re: Vertical vs. Product or service
Thanks. So just to be clear - when a vertical is assigned to an adword this limits all the ads to be displayed in the content network only at sites of this vertical (I guess google knows to assign each site to a vertical) but in the regular search page it will have no affect? Keywords are assigned to a more specific product or service (which are actualy located in a certian vertical) so the keyword tool can be used together with a product or service to get better keyword ideas. Thanks again. Re: Vertical vs. Product or service
A product or service is a categorization of things that are sold online. For a product or service you are trying to market, keywords or placement ideas can be retrieved from the TargetingIdeaService or the "keyword tool". These only include products which are sold or services which are available, nothing else. A vertical is a more general categorization which tries to place web sites in a hierarchy of topics. Based on the topic of the website in the display network, you can bid to have your ad show. These could be anything from products and services, to world localities or demographic interests(womens vs mens) or scientific interests. Think of it like this: You can get help on keyword or placement ideas for a product or service. But you can bid on a specific vertical. For example: You are selling running shoes. You would get ideas for specific keywords or websites for placement using the Athletic Shoes product. You may want to also place ads in the Hiking & Camping vertical. You may also have good luck in the Mens Interest and Womens Interest verticals. Or maybe you want to target pages that have something to do with Brazil because the World Cup is going on and you have found that your ads perform well.
