Re: [AFMUG] Battery charger + load

2018-12-27 Thread Bill Prince
I think the ones you're thinking about have "BCM" in the model number
(for Battery Charge Monitor or something like that).

Most of the ones I know about are made by Altech or Phoenix Contact, or
a few others.

Finding one that works for 12VDC is a bit of an odd duck; we are almost
always looking for 24VDC or 48VDC. I did a little poking around and
found this one from Altech that does 12VDC. Key thing to look for is "DC
UPS".

I want a DIN rail mount charger rectifier.
I believe there is one that has charging terminals that limit battery

Seems like there was a BC in the part number.  Too lazy to try to

Re: [AFMUG] Battery charger + load

2018-12-27 Thread Mathew Howard
Well, there's this:
https://www.trcelectronics.com/View/Mean-Well/DRC-100A.shtml

The Meanwell stuff is pretty basic... Traco makes some that are a bit more
advanced with temperature compensation and that kind of thing, but I think
those are just a battery charger/ups module that need a separate power
supply. .. I'm also not sure what's available in 12v, since I've only ever
really looked at 24v and 48v.
There's also the Meanwell AD-155A, but the battery charging current is
pretty low on those, so it's probably not the best fit if that's is main
job... they also don't mount to a DIN rail all that well.

2018-12-27 Thread Tim Withrow via AF

Yes, you are right. I had to go look back at the original bill. The 500 bucks
is a one time setup fee for however many statics ip's you require for your
various  byod, like cradlepoints or Verizon's devices. There is no recurring
charges for ip's thereafter.

Also you could use a VPN and port forward to get around no static ip issue. If
it's only one device that seems the most practical route.

Tim,

All I have found for an option through Verizon was a 500 dollar one time setup
charge through their business sales team to setup the static and then a monthly
charge of around 50$.

ATT has a new business plan for 55$ a month comes with a static and 3mbps
download “unlimited”.

How did you go about getting the 4$ static from Verizon? Was it a business
account or a personal?

Thanks,

Brandon

I haven't had a problem with getting SIM cards from VZ for devices. I
usually just take whatever it is to a store and say "I need a SIM for

Grew up with AM. Didn’t know the difference. Never had a hifi.
Just an old mono record player and a stack of ancient 78 rpm records.

At some point I was disappointed to discover that a lot of classic rock songs
that sound great on the car radio, actually sound no better or even worse on a
good sound system. It seems like they were recorded specifically for playing
on boomboxes and AM car radios.

You know the songs I’m talking about, the ones where you crank up the volume
and pound on the steering wheel, generally 60’s and 70’s vintage.

Of course new songs are recorded with earbuds in mind, so again, may not sound
better on a good system. At least with earbuds, you don’t inflict your music
choices on passersby, unlike the cars with 1000 watt amps in the trunk and
speakers that could probably double as a propulsion system.

Excuse me now as I go out to the garage to listen to California Dreamin’. Or
maybe some Rolling Stones or Jefferson Airplane. Or the king of low-fi
recordings, Louie Louie.

Anyone else who’s had experience with XM: does it always sound like
it’s compressed, digital and low fidelity? Why would anyone pay a
subscription for this when I get high-fidelity FM free?

Re: [AFMUG] OT: XM Radio

2018-12-27 Thread Josh Baird
Bose car audio (and home audio) is pretty terrible and far from accurate in
most cars. I just bought a new car that has Bose ‘premium’ audio, and it
sounds like absolute crap compared to my old car which had the premium HK stock
system.

... but, I’m sort of an audiophile, so most people probably won’t agree with me.

Similar. Broadcast radio gets limited play time primarily due to
the excess commercials. Sirius/XM died on launch (for me) simply
because it was so unreliable. I find that the thing I listen to
most often are poscasts. I think I have about 15 or 16 of them in
my queue. There is never a shortage, the ads are minimal, and are
easy to skip. The quality is usually excellent, but I'm not
  listening to (much) music.

trial version of Sirius/XM. We've never signed up, and actually after
the first day, we've never listened to it. The problem we have is the
drop outs. They last 10-30 seconds, and are quite frequent. Piece of
crap if you ask me. I would never pay for something that is constantly
dropping out. Heck, I couldn't even listen to it when it was free. I
don't think I would listen to it if you paid me... Then again... Maybe
  $10,000/year would persuade me.

Re: [AFMUG] Fiber up the tower

2018-12-27 Thread Carl Peterson
We've just started using Clearfield pre-made pushable or strong fiber
spools pulled through 10/6 duct up to the radio. We use BiDi so just one
strand but if you wanted a feed to a tower top they could make you MPO
cables that you could route to a YourX terminal up top through 14/10.

I wish someone made a 10/6 duct with copper conductors on the outside of
it. Like Clearfield
s toneable 10/6 except with two larger conductors under the outer wrap
instead of the single small tone wire. Would be perfect for Siklu instals
as you could run the duct right into their long connector and split off the
conductors to power the radio.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: XM Radio

2018-12-27 Thread James Howard
I’ve had XM for the last year but mostly only listen to Ch 148 Radio Classics.
The “no commercials” is false advertising in my opinion. They mostly advertise
for themselves but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard Chuck McDowell
going on about “the truth about timeshares”. The fact that I remember his name
annoys me so I’m not going to renew my subscription. Most of the old time
radio stuff is available online for free anyway, just have to put the time in
ahead of time to download or stream it on the phone while driving.

Yes, if you tune off of a channel and then back on, you can hear analog for a
second or three before it locks into the digital. Very easy to hear the
difference.

Re: [AFMUG] Managed whole house mesh wifi

2018-12-27 Thread Donnie McCorkle
Dave,

Can you describe a typical installation with Cambium?

cnMaestro is an awesome ACS, and while testing all of the cambium wifi
units, I find disparate mechanisms in the WiFi on the R-Series routers
(which are neat enough themselves) and the E-400 series WiFi AP platform
(great APs).

So far I have been unable to "MESH/WDS" the R-Series routers to the E-series
WAPs. Also the WAPs have advanced roaming features not supported in the
router series.

WiFi SSID's and Passphrases do not auto-propagate across the home, and a
number of other small issues that make the platform less "Manageable" than I
would like.

Have you found ways around these issues or is just adding the WiFi enough
for your clients?

Calix historically sold to ILECs via dedicated regional sales reps. You had
personalized service.

They didn’t have a product with universal appeal until they did the 844.

I will volunteer to stock and sell their products via my ecommerce site if they

Agreed, but that’s their business model. I think similar to the companies that
OEM “gateways” to the likes of AT and Comcast. These are not supposed to find
their way onto Amazon and Walmart online stores for end users to buy themselves
and then try to figure out how to link them into their service provider’s
operations systems.

I guess our customers could make the same complaint about us. Maybe a few WISPs
have online ordering portals, but I’m guessing very few. Not talking about put
your location in here and a salesperson will call you, but actually sign up and
schedule installation, similar to what we used to do with dialup service (where
we just needed to assign a username and password, and publish a list of local
access numbers).

The other piece of information that wasn’t apparent to me on casual inspection
is there’s a minimum sub count if you want to use their Cloud features. My take
is you need to come at it from the perspective that all your subs are going to
get the Calix router, rather than viewing it as an optional upsell. At least if
your WISP is relatively small. If you have 5000+ subs, that would be different.
You could go through a transition with existing customers, but eventually it
would be like a cable modem, everyone gets one. Either you throw it in for
free, or charge a non optional modem rental fee.

I haven't had a problem with getting SIM cards from VZ for devices. I
usually just take whatever it is to a store and say "I need a SIM for

Re: [AFMUG] OT: XM Radio

2018-12-27 Thread Ken Hohhof
My wife and son had cars that came with 6 months free, but I don’t think they
used it or paid to keep it, and I’ve never listened to it. But I have always
heard that the quality was poor and the reason to get it was no commercials,
nationwide coverage, and channels dedicated to one kind of music or talk.
Personally I like to get out of my bubble sometimes for the chance to hear a
song or artist or genre I never heard of. Still difficult since almost all FM
stations are owned by big corporations and rotate the same limited list of
songs and would never have an actual DJ who would pull out some obscure song
and play it just because he felt like it. (No Dr. Johnny Fevers or Venus
Flytraps anymore.)

Bottom line though, through the years I have always heard people say both
Sirius and XM quality was sub FM.

If this article is correct and the average bitrate is 32 kbps, that would be
voice quality, not music quality, MP3 would be 160 or 320 kbps.

http://www.carstereochick.com/2015/04/25/why-siriusxm-sucks-what-to-know-before-you-buy-subscribe/

I saw another article that said the bitrate can vary by channel, but that the
more channels they broadcast over the satellites, the less bandwidth they can
devote to each channel, and they feel the key to increasing revenue is more
channels, not better sound quality. I also saw that they use some kind of
perceptual or neural encoding to get the bitrate down, and that leads to
artifacts and a “swirly” sound, whatever that means.

FWIW, this article claims that you can use your subscription to stream over the
Internet, if you’re willing to take the hit on your mobile data plan, and the
quality will be better.

https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/make-your-cars-satellite-radio-sound-better/

Both articles also say that sat radio will sound better in some cars because
the hardware has post-processing after the tuner to recreate some of the sound
quality that was lost in encoding. I guess that’s kind of like the TV sets
that take 1080p 30fps input and fill in the missing information to drive a
2160p 60fps panel. Or colorizing a B movie.

The problem seems to be mostly that sat radio has a whole legacy base of
installed satellites and car radios that are not upgradable via firmware, so
while audio encoding has improved, the whole sat radio industry is locked into
old technology because you can’t tell all those people their car radios have to
be replaced, even if you were able to launch new satellites or reprogram the
existing ones.

I don’t listen to Fox that much, my wife is a pretty avid listener, but doesn’t

nothing like the old playing dbx on a non=dbx system kind of sound quality
issues (remember that stuff ?)

I would also say (although I haven’t done a measurement test to back this up)
the dynamic range from XM is much better than what we get in our vehicles from
Bluetooth connected devices. More on par with usb connected devices, or very
close to the same.

Be interesting to see the specs on all that stuff….. 

Since we cover so much geography, even if there was a little sound quality

better to have all your music with you whereever you are versus searching for
the FM channel that provides the type of music you are looking for. That,

Re: [AFMUG] OT: XM Radio

2018-12-27 Thread Darin Steffl
Yes the quality is shit. BUT, the people that pay for it love it because
it's available everywhere and has so many channels. Unfortunately, I can
barely listen to it with how compressed it is. I stream spotify over
bluetooth in my car and it's way better quality. I think FM sounds better
than XM by a long shot.

Not judging here :). You seriously don’t notice a bitrate audio issue listening
to Fox? The talk stations are worse than the music stations.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: XM Radio

2018-12-27 Thread David Coudron
I would agree that the music seems to be pretty high quality. Specifically,
there are some songs that get into the pretty low bass frequencies that seem to
demonstrate pretty decent range for sound quality. Again, it might make a
difference on which stations you are listening to, but the sound is pretty
decent. We haven’t had CD players in the vehicles for a few years now, but I
guess I never noticed any sound degradation when listening to the same song on
CD vs it coming from XM.

Since we cover so much geography, even if there was a little sound quality
dropoff to use XM, I think overall it is still a far more consistent sound
quality than moving in and out of good FM coverage areas, and definitely way
better to have all your music with you whereever you are versus searching for
the FM channel that provides the type of music you are looking for. That,
plus the no commercials (except Fox News ☹) makes it pretty easy to like. The
cost is not insignificant though and that is what makes it tougher to get on
board.

Calix historically sold to ILECs via dedicated regional sales reps. You had
personalized service.
They didn’t have a product with universal appeal until they did the 844.

I will volunteer to stock and sell their products via my ecommerce site if they
will give me enough margin to make it worth it.

Agreed, but that’s their business model. I think similar to the companies that
OEM “gateways” to the likes of AT and Comcast. These are not supposed to
find their way onto Amazon and Walmart online stores for end users to buy
themselves and then try to figure out how to link them into their service
provider’s operations systems.

I guess our customers could make the same complaint about us. Maybe a few
WISPs have online ordering portals, but I’m guessing very few. Not talking
about put your location in here and a salesperson will call you, but actually
sign up and schedule installation, similar to what we used to do with dialup
service (where we just needed to assign a username and password, and publish a
list of local access numbers).

I think it’s a turn off when they don’t have an online store somewhere to

Calix is the only good method today for routers and a mesh solution that can be
managed by the ISP. Powerline adapters suck and we don't use them anymore. WiFi
extenders are just as bad and we tell customers to throw them in the garbage.
They cause more issues than they fix.

We have 850+ Calix GigaCenters in the field and are deploying more of the Mesh
units. Everything is very easy to provision and we have full visibility into
the home network. Pricing is pretty good and we get to make money on it instead
of the customer
