Re: [AFMUG] Drop Termination Closures

2019-01-09 Thread Adam Moffett

Chris,

I've got a sample of the Commscope unit in hand.  I can confirm that
it's about 100x better than the Optima-S.

Also a handy you-tube installation video:

If I'm being perfectly honest, I liked the Commscope version
better than the Optima I have on hand.

There is a newer rev of Optima-S than what I have in my picture,
so I also have to re-evaluate.  The new one is supposed to angle
the connectors up a little so they're easier to get a cable in and
out of.  The mainline compartment closes with bolts instead of the
wire clamps, but I don't know if the seal is any different.  They
changed the splice tray too.  The drop cable compartment has a
snap lid now and I think it had a hasp to optionally secure it
with a wire or zip tie.  Disclaimer.the newer Optima version I
saw was a 3D printed prototype, so it may still be different.

It's not a stupid idea. For Aerial espicially there is a big
advantage without the cost of the hardened connector terminals.

We tested the Optima S about a year ago, unfortunately they
leaked terribly with a flat drop gasket in the mainline (in a
handhole application). Design flaw that was never tested
apparently. They were supposed to be redesigning but it shook my
confidence in the product & company. Ive never liked split rubber
grommets which is what these use on the mainline side. We also
found their field install connectors to be more difficult to get
a good install vs other connectors.

Ultimately we just stayed with a fusion spliced drop in a Tyco
450 case. BUT if we were going to do an aerial project I would at
least re-evaluate them. I would probably try to get the drop
assemblies made in China vs buying from multilink or terminating
bulk cable.

On Thu, Jan 3, 2019, 4:01 PM Adam Moffett mailto:dmmoff...@gmail.com> wrote:

Commscope and Multilink both make aerial closures like this.

Even if I take 10 minutes to put a connector on the cable,
that's still
faster than taking a closure off the strand, bringing it down
into your
truck/trailer, break the seal, fusion splice, reseal, rehang,
re-tie the
slack.

They intend for you to use preterminated cables, but I think
that has to
come with a lot of waste so I'm not 100% sold on that. That's
why I'm
experimenting with terminations on drop cables.

I suppose I seek comment on both the termination process and
also
whether this is a stupid idea to start with.

Re: [AFMUG] Fwd: Happy New Year Vatos Locos

2019-01-09 Thread Adam Moffett
Flat sides up isn't that good either because they slope towards the
leg.  You end up with your foot wedged into the edge of the vertical
leg.   You gotta install pegs on one of the legs.  Also install
something to stand on underneath your antenna mount positions.

Oh, so it is one of those, Trylon, right? Formed sheet metal. I only bought
one once, never again.

Re: [AFMUG] OT My 2018 Email Traffic

2019-01-09 Thread Dennis Burgess via AF
The question is are your forcing secure communications, SSL and TLS vs sending
their password in clear text. Assuming you are running your own servers. If
you are not forcing users to use secure method of password transmissions, then
yes, you could be held liable. Is it going to get to that, doubt it, but
still. Make sure that you have SSL and TLS setup, make sure that you don’t
allow access to your mail server without a secured method.  I have seen it
time and time again.

I had a customer call yesterday saying he suddenly received 4000 emails in one
day, plus 2 of his credit cards were “hacked” by which he means fraudulent
purchases. And somehow he is thinking this is his ISPs fault. I have heard
lots of email problems through the years, but suddenly 4000 emails in one day
is a new one, especially if they all passed the spam filter. And as far as his
Best Buy credit card which he says he hasn’t used in 2 years and isn’t on his
computer, all I can say is who has a Best Buy credit card?

Re: [AFMUG] OT My 2018 Email Traffic

2019-01-09 Thread Mike Hammett
I had that happen several years ago. It was before I adopted more secure
password policies... lots of shared passwords. Someone logged into my Best Buy
account, changed the e-mail address, changed the password, bought a bunch of
shit on my Best Buy credit card. I think 7 brand new iPad Airs. Well, before,
during, and after this process I got flooded with a bunch of legitimate
newsletter subscriptions. Because they were legitimate, they all made it
through the filters. I also then had to manually unsubscribe from all of them.

Re: [AFMUG] Connector on a drop cable

2019-01-09 Thread Adam Moffett
I thought it was due to being more resistant to moisture.  I also wonder
if the goop in the tube cushions the fiber from being crushed.

My only reason for sticking with the loose tube drop cable vs the
900um tight buffer is that it's my understanding that loose tube
is better for underground.  Maybe I should get past my prejudice

My guys got good at using a AFL Fast Connect with a 3mm boot and
getting the distances right to just have the loose tube ending
inside the boot. Sometimes a piece of heatshrink over the end of
the boot as well. The loose tube is fairly rigid but it work OK
in our fairly large NIDs .

Now we are using tight buffer flat drop  so it just has 900um
right in the cable. But we also switched to fusion splicing a
pigtail at the NID so don't use a field install connector any
more either.

there a better way to do this?

That's the orange bare fiber inside 16" of clear 900um
furcation tube.
The connector is an SOC made for 900um cable.  The furcation
tube is
pushed about 3/4" into the end of the buffer tube and then a
piece of
heat shrink ties the pieces of tubing together.

It seems durable enough, but it's a lot of finicky pieces.
Took about
10 solid minutes to do this.  I'm sure with practice I can
shave that
down, but it just seems like there has to be an easier way.

In a moment I'll send a pic of why I'm bothering.
