Thanks,  don't think i'll get one now.

For $1000 you can get a new engine for it - but the generator end is
for all intents and purposes permanently stuck to the crankshaft.
Ended up having to use a die grinder to demolish the old crankshaft to
get the generator off.

Starter solenoid has failed at least twice in 1000/hours.

Fuel pump has failed once.

Carburetor linkage wore itself out and fell off the carb.  Only choice
for parts is complete replacement carb for $600.

Very loud unit

I have an Onan generator in a Motorhome.   At least that one has a low
oil shutdown and oil filter, but it has always surged badly and quits
randomly.  It’s on it’s second fuel pump in about 600 hours.    Output
breaker trips from vibration or bumps while driving.

Our newer splice truck has this model:

https://www.cummins.com/generators/cummins-quiet-gas-generators
<https://www.cummins.com/generators/cummins-quiet-gas-generators>
It’s reasonably quiet, has low oil shutdown and a filter. Made it
about 25 hours before it had to go in for service for a entirely new
wiring harness because it would randomly shut down.

The new F150 that they're referring to has MUCH more power

Re: [AFMUG] Does anyone other than Onan make a decent mounted gas generator?

2021-02-19 Thread Bill Prince
It's part of their new hybrid package. I think it has a large battery that
powers the inverter up to a point, and if you use too much power, it starts
the engine to supplement. The generator also runs as a motor as a
supplement to the gas engine, but only for short bursts. The braking is
hybrid regen/friction, so if you are "light" on the brakes, that energy
goes into the battery. Based on what I've read about it, the only energy
that goes into the big battery while you're driving is from the regen.

I presume (but don't know) that there is some way to charge the big battery
via an AC plug?

You would of course power the fuel pump via the ignition switch circuit
such that when the generator is off, so is the pump.

It's not that they burn through oil fast, but that the capacity of their
oil sump is small and normal usage will go through it.  They run them
sloppier than an automotive four stroke.   We ran a bunch of honda's for
20-30 hours at a time during the storms of 16-17...

Any generator can be mounted if you try hard enough.

I have had it with the piece of shit Onan generator on the fiber trailer. If
the splicing trailer didn’t have a built in fuel tank I would just strap a
Honda on and be done with it, but I would prefer something with a fuel pump.
