Azotel for almost 8 years now.

Works great, stable, they add new features for us all the time for free.

The platform looks dated but it's functional for us.

Re: [AFMUG] Billing Platform

2019-12-16 Thread Steve Jones
I would like to have gone Azotel, they had reporting features I really
liked. Not a lot of people move away from them (that's about as easy as
changing your domain name or telephone number). I never got to try them,
but if you're looking at deep financial insight into your network, they
would be the guys to talk to.
Sonar is an up and comer, built specifically for WISPs, too new yet to see
what happens when it's bones get old and dirty, has a Mac guy feel to it.
We've been on powercode for like 10 or more years. They were built from
scratch by an ISP for internal use and grew, and were bought multiple
times. Bertram wireless owns them now and has for a bunch of years. They're
kind of like a marriage, sometimes you're wanting to by a nice necklace,
sometimes you're digging a hole in the back yard and sharpening your knife.
They're on my shitlist right now, but I still wouldn't have any issue with
recommending them to you as what you get for the money is pretty cost
effective. All I can say is build your own documentation, because they
don't have any to speak of.
You're not going to get better insight than what Layne is offering,
serverplus deals with pretty much every platform, Every kind of operator
and every kind of cobbled implementation out there. He can offer you the
unique ability to let you describe what kind of operator you are and let
you know which of the many systems would meet your needs based on the
support tickets he sees generated on each system and each operators
practices. That's actually a service he could probably market

Re: [AFMUG] Billing Platform

2019-12-16 Thread David Coudron
We were originally using Powercode but switched to Sonar a little over a year
ago. Both worked well. Inventory management under Sonar was more trouble
than we expected, but graphing and other items are better. Powercode is
faster, you can sort lists better, and the probes were always more reliable
than Sonar. Sonar's integration through Mikrotik is messy, but we moved to
Preseem and the integration through Preseem is very clean and very easy.
Overall, we are happy with the Sonar plus Preseem combination. We have some
ongoing problem points with Sonar, but feel like we made the right long term
move.

Re: [AFMUG] Billing Platform

2019-12-23 Thread Jesse DuPont

People will mock this, but you should look at Emerald. It isn't
nearly as pretty as Sonar or Splynx, but it is very mature,
extremely flexible and functional, and very fast. Support is super
responsive and competent. It's also a great value; annual cost is
about $1200 for support and licenses are one-time buy per active
account. Even after having ours hosted in an Amazon XL compute VM,
it's still very cost effective. Point in case: we switched away from
one of the currently popular pay-per-sub ones and our annual cost
went from $24K to about $6K and we lost zero functionality.
We're dual-stacked (v4/v6) and billing is fully integrated with
RADIUS (either PPPoE or DHCP w/dual-stack queue on Mikrotik),
including having currently-assigned v4 address and v6 prefix in
billing (and a log of past assignments). When customers are behind
on their bill, they get different RADIUS attributes, which shoves
them behind our implementation of a hotel-style captive portal so
they have a shot at seeing our "you haven't paid" landing page.
And FWIW, accounts on annual payment are truly annual, not 12
months.

I know IEA has been around for ages. But it requires a radius server. There’s
still no way to make it work without one and still rate limit customers at the
head end correct?

For me that’s a show stopper.

Re: [AFMUG] Billing Platform

2019-12-24 Thread Carl Peterson
Why is a radius server an issue. Freeradius is simple, stable, and
mature.

Not sure if I'd recommend it starting out this way, but we use Netsuite
which is integrated with our radius server. If a NAS/BNG doesn't work with
Free radius, we don't need it.

Re: [AFMUG] Billing Platform

2019-12-24 Thread Jesse DuPont

There always has to be some kind of AAA process happening to have
the billing system apply customer rate-limits, where ever you choose
to apply them. Whether the billing system uses an API to control and
account for the networking plane, or RADIUS or some other kind of
scripting, there is still some kind of AAA-type functionality
occurring. So yes, to do that, Emerald uses RADIUS. We chose to use
their RADIUS because the integration with Emerald is deep; that is,
once it was setup installed, we've never had to actually touch the
RADIUS server itself (except to restart it after updates) because
its configuration is all handled within Emerald.

Re: [AFMUG] Billing Platform

2020-01-31 Thread Daniel Moore
You can't really compare Sonar to VISP IMO, that is not fair to either company.

VISP is very old and does not do much more than billing. If you need your hand
held, VISP is the go to billing system.
Sonar is new, and is probably what you want to heavily consider using.

Haven’t used VISP so I’m unfamiliar. But I would highly recommend sonar.

We Started on platypus, migrated to powercode. We were on powercode for a
little over a year and although it was an upgrade from platypus it still
didn’t meet our needs. at the time they didn’t have RADIUS implemented
which platypus did so we were basically running both side by side which was
a PITA.

Migrated to sonar a couple years ago and haven’t looked back. They are a
very forward thinking company and are quick to fix issues and add new
features. Sonar also integrates with a ton of external tools like text
messaging etc.

I would highly recommend sonar. But like I said we’ve never tried VISP so
I’m unfamiliar with it.

Mike,

Are you running v8?  Been curious what the feedback is on it.

VISP is built on Java. Not JS, but Java.  Java is dated.

You can't really compare Sonar to VISP IMO, that is not fair to either
company.
VISP is very old and does not do much more than billing.  If you need
your hand held, VISP is the go to billing system.

Sonar is new, and is probably what you want to heavily consider using.

integration through Mikrotik is messy, but we moved to Preseem and the
integration through Preseem is very clean and very easy.  Overall, we
are happy with the Sonar plus Preseem combination.  We have some
ongoing problem points with Sonar, but feel like we made the right
long term move.

No, I run Sonar. Still v1. ;-)

The web-based version of VISP was under development for a number of years, but
as I understand, it is now publicly available. That means no more Java client.

If anyone is running the newest release of VISP (web based) Please chime
in. Even better if you have used Sonar.
