Chuck, how about an electric dune buggy?

https://www.theverge.com/2019/3/7/18254329/volkswagen-id-buggy-electric-concept-car-geneva-motor-show-2019

Or get the MEB modular platform from VW and design / 3D print your own chassis
for it.

in Sunnyvale from 1980-1996 before we moved into the mountains).

Re: [AFMUG] OT new electric car

2019-03-09 Thread Bill Prince
Yes. It was pure luck. My first "real" job, and I was destined for a field
job in Gary, Indiana. Two weeks after that, Sperry bought our company and
laid off 5 out of 6 of the employees. I figure they kept me because I was
cheap (fresh out of college). Of the remaining 1 out of 6, half quit and
walked out. So I was now one of about 50 remaining employees of what had
been over 600 when I'd started.

I got called in and informed that the job in Gary was still there, but
there were now openings all over the country; one of which was Sunnyvale,
California. Well I'd been to the Bay area when I was in the service, and
I'd been to Gary too. I liked the Bay area *_WAY_* better than Gary, so I
said I'll go there. That was 48 years ago, and it was like the proverbial
"coming out smelling like a rose" kind of thing.

I've got a Model 3 performance as my daily driver. Autopilot too.

Best car I've ever driven and owned. Faster than my Camaro ZL1 plus some
Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche cars I've driven.

I highly recommend a Tesla. The car gets frequent updates every 4-6 weeks
with new features and improvements to autopilot. Match 15, they'll release
an update that gives 5% more power to the motors. The car was 0 to 60 in
3.5s when I bought in August and now they have it down to 3.2s with
updates.

I've ridden in a friend's big model S (P100D or whatever, the biggest
one you can get). Ludicrous mode is a fitting name, what a rocket.
Freaky going that fast without an engine scream. Beautiful exterior.
Interior is a ripoff for what you pay. Autopilot is a bit sketch in
busy areas.

Do something like mid-air refueling. A truck with a huge battery pack pulls
up beside you on the highway and recharges your car while you drive.
Eliminates the need to build recharging stations everywhere. And since your
million dollar electric supercar no doubt has self driving, you don’t need to
take rest stops. Except I guess to use the bathroom. I’m sure they’ll work
that out.

I would say if you’re not going to drive, why not take Amtrak or Greyhound.
Except then you have to mingle with THOSE people. Plus I guess you need a car
for short trips when you get to your destination. If you believe everything
they say about the next generation where the future is going, nobody is going
to own cars anyway. They’ll take an Uber, or if they need a car to drive for a
few days, they’ll rent one. Maybe an electric supercar! So rental fleets
could be the target market.

Well, it's kind of a necessary thing to make electric vehicles into a true
replacement for gas. For 99% of what we do with cars, needing to recharge for
4-8 hours every 300 miles or so, really isn't a problem... you drive to work,
drive home, plug it back in and tomorrow it's ready to go again. But when you
want to go on a 400 mile trip, you just can't do it - you're going to have to
stop somewhere in the middle for half a day to recharge. Since there are limits
on the number of hours a truck driver can drive in a day, I imagine that it
would be possible to make it work with a big enough battery pack, and
recharging stations in the right places... for things like police cars and
taxis, you're not typically going far from where they're based, so just
switching cars would be a realistic option. Granted, not a cheap option, but
the difference in the cost of fuel could very well make it cheaper than burning
gas.

But if you can make a car that can be recharged practically as fast as filling
a gas tank, you don't have to worry about any of that - it's just a matter of
building the recharging stations, and they can be used the same as gas/diesel
vehicles are used now. I think the idea of building a luxery supercar, is that
you can show that it works, and you don't have to worry about how much it
costs. There's nothing practical about a supercar anyway, so the practicality
of it really doesn't matter.

On Tue, Mar 5, 2019 at 9:56 AM Ken Hohhof mailto:af...@kwisp.com> > wrote:

Seems like fast charging would be more of an issue for trucks, police cars,
taxis, etc. that can’t be off the road charging for 4-8 hours because they’re
not making money when they’re charging.

If someone is really concerned about recharging their luxury supercar in 4
minutes because they’re driving it cross-country or something, they are going
to have a problem finding the special charging stations. If instead they’re
just Matthew McConaughey wanting to take their Lincoln out on a
spur-of-the-minute drive in a commercial, I doubt he needs to recharge it in 4
minutes (or that there’s a special recharging station on his route).

equivalent capacitor would look like. Probably looks like a bomb.

2019-03-05 Thread Mathew Howard
Well, it's kind of a necessary thing to make electric vehicles into a true
replacement for gas. For 99% of what we do with cars, needing to recharge
for 4-8 hours every 300 miles or so, really isn't a problem... you drive to
work, drive home, plug it back in and tomorrow it's ready to go again. But
when you want to go on a 400 mile trip, you just can't do it - you're going
to have to stop somewhere in the middle for half a day to recharge. Since
there are limits on the number of hours a truck driver can drive in a day,
I imagine that it would be possible to make it work with a big enough
battery pack, and recharging stations in the right places... for things
like police cars and taxis, you're not typically going far from where
they're based, so just switching cars would be a realistic option. Granted,
not a cheap option, but the difference in the cost of fuel could very well
make it cheaper than burning gas.

But if you can make a car that can be recharged practically as fast as
filling a gas tank, you don't have to worry about any of that - it's just a
matter of building the recharging stations, and they can be used the same
as gas/diesel vehicles are used now. I think the idea of building a luxery
supercar, is that you can show that it works, and you don't have to worry
about how much it costs. There's nothing practical about a supercar anyway,
so the practicality of it really doesn't matter.

Re: [AFMUG] OT New electric car

2019-03-05 Thread Ken Hohhof

That's true. I read an article about that yesterday. The one I saw was a
combination of local storage and solar plus grid.

Re: [AFMUG] OT New electric car

2019-03-04 Thread Robert
There are nano-carbon anode battery experiments from 2-3 years ago that
claimed just that kind of charging density. Could they have gotten
that to actual into production? The word out here is that the Tesla
plant is in the process of moving to the next generation of battery
production.

based in Hong Kong.

Desten is cagey with details about its batteries, but claims
"exceptionally high charge rates, 10C or higher," as well as power
density in excess of 1600 watts per kilogram. The company says its cells
can be fast charged and discharged 5,000 times before they drop to a
capacity of 80 percent, suggesting excellent longevity particularly if
the cars are charged slowly overnight most of the time."

Definitely not a mistake... who knows whether or not they can actually
do it, but there appears to be a few different companies claiming
they're making batteries that can handle 10C charge rates. I think
they're just using the battery manufacturer's charging claims, and not
actually expecting to be able to charge a real car that fast.

If they can make it work, I could see them building something like that
just to show off, but there's no way they're going to let a normal person
use it.

Re: [AFMUG] OT New electric car

2019-03-04 Thread Bill Prince
They announced it today as the Supercharger V3. Capable of up to 350KW, but
would "typically" run in the 200KW range (give or take). To take advantage
of the higher charge rates, the vehicle battery packs will need to be
enhanced to allow them to take that amount of power.

Believe it once you have one on-hand. A lot of lofty talk and not much walk in
the (potential) electric car market.

Claims 311 mile range. At 3.11 miles per kW that would be a 100 kWh battery.
OK, within the realm of posibilities.

4:40 minutes to 80% battery capacity.

So 280 seconds or .077 hours to dump 83 kWh into the battery.
83/.077=1067 kW

So you have to have 1 Megawatt power source to charge?
2223 amps of 480 service.

I am doubting this.

Yes, Tesla are that beefy, this new car is 4x that beefy.
Not likely.

I am wondering if someone got something wrong in the press release. They claim
the batts don’t heat during charging too.

Isn't that the kind of electric service you have running to your house? Didn't
I see the latest Tesla chargers are 200-250kw.
