Re: [AFMUG] Cambium 450d

2016-09-17 Thread George Skorup
The 450d is cool. Pricing is decent for what you get (40Mbps and no
reflector needed).

Now, if they get rid of the regular 3.65 SM and make us pay almost $500
for the new integrated panel version, then that's not going to work for
me. If they brought the price down in line with the 450d, then that
would be OK.

the spec sheets say 25 dBi either way. What are people

I'm not going to get too excited about 1 dB.

Otherwise, we're looking at the connectorized 450 SM. Or

Re: [AFMUG] documenting customer usage

2016-09-17 Thread George Skorup

CentOS, flow-tools, Cacti + FlowViewer plugin. All free.

Here's one of the reports I like to look at a couple times a day. Top 5
sources for the last hour. flow-cat does need some horsepower behind it
for more complex search filters. This one happened to take about 2
seconds on 12 Xeon cores.

Motherf'ing windows updates by far.

Case in point is netflow. I wanted to track our nat users.
Mikrotik,

starting with 6.29, added NAT data to the netflow export. I
looked at
all the collectors out there and decided they were way
overkill for
what I wanted. So, I took a day and wrote my own netflow
collector
using perl. Just grabs the netflow data, filters out the
garbage, and
writes to a tab-delimited text file base of the date and
hour. Very
simple. Does exactly what I needed.

Re: [AFMUG] documenting customer usage

2016-09-17 Thread Mark - Myakka Technologies
Josh,

I was trying to work within Steve's budget.

Also, I should give a disclaimer. In my previous life, I was a
programmer. I still love to program. Any excuse I get to write even
a small script/program, I'll do it.

Case in point is netflow. I wanted to track our nat users. Mikrotik,
starting with 6.29, added NAT data to the netflow export. I looked at
all the collectors out there and decided they were way overkill for
what I wanted. So, I took a day and wrote my own netflow collector
using perl. Just grabs the netflow data, filters out the garbage, and
writes to a tab-delimited text file base of the date and hour. Very
simple. Does exactly what I needed.

2016-09-17 Thread Mark - Myakka Technologies
Watch out for DirecTV. We have had many cases after power outages
that something gets corrupt on the DVR. It will then try to download
any of the corrupt recorded shows via the internet.

Not to mention their turn back time option. If you come home and miss
the first 10 minutes of the 2 hour cross over special of Hoarders and
American Pickers and use the turn back time feature, You are now
watching 2 hours of IPTV over your Internet connection.

I actually wasnt even looking for granular to the PC, I was just more
curious about getting the service or source.

I got on their AirRouter, there is an XboxOne, so thats probably the cuplrit

There is also a directv and 4 odd vendor MACs im assuming are the directv
slingthings s there is that

long term torch logging would have sufficed at the site router

Re: [AFMUG] The latest gig city

2016-09-17 Thread fiberrun
I'll grant you that there is only so much space for poles. However, I used the
qualifier not permanently to denote that poles do get replaced, either to make
room for more cables or because they have a finite lifetime. Hence my argument
is that while poles do consume non-renevable resources, the consumption is not
permanent and final, as new poles will replace old ones.

Re: [AFMUG] documenting customer usage

2016-09-17 Thread Mark - Myakka Technologies
I'm using platypus and radius. I don't know much about powercode, but
I'm assuming they dump the usage into some type of SQL table.

I wanted a finer detailed usage, so I added some code to the PLAT SQL
database to give me upload and download by hour for for each user in a
different table.

Took me a few days to figure out how to do it. Someone that knows SQL
could bang it out in a few hours tops. Most of my time was
researching SQL triggers.

Having it broken down by hour helps when talking to customers. I also
wrote some CGI scripts, so the customers can access the data via a web
page.

Re: [AFMUG] documenting customer usage

2016-09-17 Thread Mark - Myakka Technologies
This is one of my biggest issues. Customers that want to see what is
going on inside their network. I have come to the conclusion, the
only way to do this is a managed router solution.

Years ago we found the skydog router, it was a great system. We were
ready to standardize on their system, but comcast bought them and they
disappeared.

Been fiddling with some roll your own stuff using openwrt. Not too
bad, not sure how it will scale though.

I'm currently testing one system that is suppose to have the inside BW
monitoring at the end of the month. Have another system coming in
next week that claims to have it all running now.

I'll be making my final decision in November. Want to give the
cambium guys one more look at the show to see how their stuff has
changed in a year.

We are looking at doing the managed router at about $7.95-$9.95 per
month. Starting to see more and more people interested in a managed
router.

2016-09-17 Thread Chuck McCown
Poles actually do permanently consume non renewable resources. There is only
so much room for a pole line along most streets and roads. Once that room is
consumed it is gone. Even private easements are “perpetual” and “run with the
land”.

Yep. And from what I remember SOP is to replace the board with the power
circuity rather than fix components.

Also $200+ of that is in shipping as well. It is expensive to send radios back
and forth from Latvia :-)

It is still cheaper than buying new radios.

In their defense, they may also do a full parametric test and calibration of
the radio. May also use new gaskets when reassembling.

I didn't like the repair cycle time but I thought the money was reasonable.
Mine was fried by lightning and they repaired it. I think they three in a new
board.

I’ll let SAF speak for itself, but what they do for that money is worth it IMHO.

You never know where the rabbit hole goes with ESD damage.

Probably, but not everyone downloads a new game all at the same time... I
wonder to what extent Sony is staggering the automatic update retrieval in
intervals through the entire installed base of PS4 that are online with 24x7
net access.

I was happily surprised this time around that Apple updates didn't cause
massive sudden spikes in traffic. it ramped up a bit on Tuesday and then has
been flowly tapering off all week .. We'll see what next week looks like
though.

Our Akamai graph (which for us is where all Apple updates come from - YMMV)

since then its been a shit show of complaints :(
