[AFMUG] Cisco Nexus Switch / Mikrotik CCR

2017-02-05 Thread Jason McKemie
Has anyone had any success with linking these two via fiber? We were unable
to get the link to work, so I ended up using a Cisco router as an
intermediary. I'd like to get rid of that extra hardware if possible.

My 7 year old tablet has 5GHz. Some devices will cling to the 2.4 band
for whatever reason. Band-steering helps. It works most of the time on
the Cambium E400 and 500's we've deployed. Some devices are just assholes.

The best tamales are the ones we get from the market up on the corner. They
make them fresh every day, and I like them "preparado" (with chilies,

Outback, as far as I know, doesn't actually have a battery factory. But they
are a fairly large company so they are relabeling somebody else's deep cycle
off grid design AGM battery. In terms of $/Wh stored the only thing that beats
it is the 6V 225Ah wet cell batteries from Trojan.

Re: [AFMUG] PoE Cat5/6 cable distances

2017-02-05 Thread Eric Kuhnke
If you have two separate cat5e cables, one thing to do is use one cable
with a VDSL2 30a bridge (be sure you're getting something that can use the
30a profile, not 17a, because it won't be near real 100BaseTX speeds). Or
with a pair of such bridges in parallel so you can build a 2 x 100BaseTX
802.3ad. That's your link for data.

On the other cable, put something like a 200W rated power supply tuned to
58VDC. One of the better quality meanwells. Use four wires for positive and
four for negative. On the load at the far end, put in a DC-DC converter
that takes input from 36-72VDC and turns it into a stable 48VDC. Use that
to power your equipment from DC using DC-DC PoE injectors, DC powered
switch like Netonix, etc.

Don't get confused that 328 feet is just a powering issue. There are
completely unrelated Ethernet and POE issues. 328 feet is magic for Ethernet,
not necessarily for POE, although they tend to go together.

If you are feeding a micropop over 800 feet of buried Cat5 with no AC power at
the far end, you have your hands full. I would buy some VDSL bridges (and
spares), they aren't all that expensive, and after all you are feeding a
micropop.

Next time, I would bury at least 6 strand fiber and at least 12AWG for power
(120VAC or 48VDC). And I would put it in conduit with a pull tape. You don't
want to spend all the time and money burying 800 feet and then find out you
buried the wrong thing.

You could just run 3x 12ga and run the 110 AC all the way out there.
For a load as small as you're saying, you wouldn't even notice the voltage drop.

You could just run 3x 12ga and run the 110 AC all the way out there.
For a load as small as you're saying, you wouldn't even notice the

I have run up to 600 volts on CAT 5.

Maybe. My bigger problem is how to get 24
volts/whatever-that-can-be-regulated-down-to-24v to the other end of a
800 foot wire run without too much voltage drop/heat so I could power
 for a micropop without wire
the size of my thumb.

I guess I could run a transformer to up-convert from 110VAC to
and then another one on the other end to run smaller wire,
but I don’t know if that’s practical vs just buying something off the
shelf. Wondering if someone’s already solved the problem and can
recommend what they did, besides google and guess.

I have run up to 600 volts on CAT 5.

Maybe. My bigger problem is how to get 24
volts/whatever-that-can-be-regulated-down-to-24v to the other end of a 800
foot wire run without too much voltage drop/heat so I could power
for a micropop without wire the
size of my thumb.

I guess I could run a transformer to up-convert from 110VAC to
and then another one on the other end to run smaller wire, but I don’t know
if that’s practical vs just buying something off the shelf. Wondering if
someone’s already solved the problem and can recommend what they did,
besides google and guess.

[AFMUG] Torta De Jamon for Super Bowl snack

2017-02-05 Thread Jaime Solorza
I don't watch football but wanted to share a snack recipe...
Pan Blanco (Bolillo or French will do)
..cut in half long way... Toast slightly on comal Add mayonnaise is you
like... Slice thin Mexican white cheese (Muenster will do), slice avocado
in small chunks, add Ham or Turkey slice... Assemble and put on comal or
toaster oven to warm up cheese... Melt if you like... Some fresh jalapeno
to bite along with Torta and cold beverage. Tecate or Modelo go very well
with it, Corona if you are a preppy kind Budweiser.. Nah... Salud
