Re: [AFMUG] AT & T Rural broadband

2017-09-27 Thread Mathew Howard
I don't really see how redefining "broadband" to 10/1 is a bad thing...
shouldn't that mean that other companies wouldn't (in theory, anyway) be
able to get funding to overbuild areas where we are already providing
10mbps, which they currently could, unless we have at least 25mbps?

Off the topic, but we have a customer who keeps trying to get our cs to
ise the term broadband. Hes limited to 6x2 and thinks (semi correctly) he

I'd think the big guys getting greedy (and being allowed to do as they wish
with their networks) would only help the smaller providers. It's certainly
possible that I'm missing something though.

Nah, there was some configuration options in the last firmware release of
baii. I think it was an engineers fuck you to motorola fsk, you can make
them chatter across the band at full power. It costs you the whole 1.2mbps
throughput, so i guess i wouldnt be able to run a good wisp on it, lol

Re: [AFMUG] Multipath fading for a laymen (visuals please)

2017-09-27 Thread Steve Jones
This is a nice visual, but it doesnt show anything. Water ripples is all i
can see right now to visualize. Could probably do full cancellation as well
as degrees of attennuation

Thinking out loud here...

If i had a tray of water, and a respectable camera.

If i dropped a stone on the left side, halfway up the tray, the ripple
would hit the right side directly, showing los.

I could raise and lower the left and right so it bounces off the top and
bottom, showing the reflection

Some reflections would cancel, some would even amplify.

I could drop ice logs on the top to show atmospheric reflection

I think weve worked through this to a workable solution.

Now if i wanted to get super technical, what would i use to represent
power ( a specified pressure striking the water on the left) and represent
recieve (pressure striking the right)

I could show the whole rf gammut, couldnt i? Even down to antenna gain (the
item striking is an isotropic and if i put a focal, its antenna gain)

Seriously, one of you braniacs can do this easily

It's starting to get annoying though where everyone is starting to offer
their own online streaming service and pulling their content from other
services.

We ditched our own IPTV system a couple years back. We still promote 3
partner multicast IPTV systems across our network and Sling for OTT.
However, Youtube TV launched in our market and is way better than any other
OTT system I've seen. Local channels, network channels, cloud DVR and a
much better user interface than anyone else. It is very promising. I
think it is going to take the market for OTT (local broadcast and network
channels) by storm. I thought my TabloTV + SlingTV solution was pretty
sweet but now I am only using Youtube TV and Netflix. Worth checking out
 if available in your area.

Youtube TV uses chromecast (they will send you a free one after your first
payment), IOS devices, and Chrome browser. I watch it mostly on my Vizio TV
that has built in chromecast or on another TV that has an Apple TV. Basically,
you use your phone, tablet, or PC as a super remote-control. As far as the
interface being the best, it uses live video feeds as the thumbnail image for
each live channel (this is super cool). While timeline scrubbing through a
DVR'd show, it shows you a thumbnail of where you are while you scrub, so you
can skip ads faster than any other interface.

In our market (Utah), Fox News is very popular, so this is a huge advantage
over SlingTV. Although we don't have an official marketing relationship with
YoutubeTV, it essentially allows us to bundle 250Mbps Fiber Internet +
YoutubeTV (local+network channels, 3 streams, 6 accounts) for $100/mo, or 1Gbps
Fiber Internet plus YoutubeTV for $113/mo. That's about $30 less than the
non-OTT offerings which also require set top boxes, not to mention the hassle
of dealing with local broadcast retransmission agreements and network channel
distribution rights agreements which is far worse than dealing with the mafia.

We are in process of deploying Rodeo. It's been a long process and
still not ready to launch. Be advised their system is true IGMP multicast
and needs some specific network features to support that. Also will NOT
handle packet loss or network congestion well at all. It's not like netflix
where it goes to lower quality or buffers nicely.

Re: [AFMUG] OTT-TV

2017-09-27 Thread Layne Sisk
One of the problems you will see is that when using OTT, as it is defined by
the carriers, is that some of the most important content is not now nor will it
be available for at least the foreseeable future. OTT as they define it is
available over the open internet similar to what Sling and Vue are doing.
Getting OTT rights from stations who don’t even have those rights from the
national networks, is a problem. Often national networks can’t provide it
either because they don’t have it for some of the content (read NFL here).

At Real Choice we decided that model was not the one we wanted to pursue. IPTV
is different in that it is only provided over a closed network. It:

  1. Is easier to control the quality of the delivery
  2. Allows you to provide all the content (if you read the small print there
are a number of programs that are blacked out for Vue, Sling, YouTubeTV and
others).
  3. Allows you to insert your own programming.
  4. Provides an additional source of income.

We can currently provide some programming OTT, and I believe over time that
will grow, but our decision was to provide the content people wanted on a
closed network and move to OTT as it was possible to do so. OTT providers
decided to provide whatever content they could get OTT, and then go back and
try to get the rights to add what people want. Different approaches to the
same problem, with one important difference, those OTT providers will not give
you a piece of the pie.

Come to the session IPTV- To do or not to do, at Wispapalooza, we will have
lots of good info for you there!

There's not much investment to make those types of systems work (as opposed to
DIY headends) so not a long term ROI problem. Linear TV will still have a
significant presence for several years. 5 - 10 years at least.

I like the quality capabilities of an on-net video solution, but anyone not
looking at how to do OTT to phones, laptops, tablets, Rokus, etc. is doing
themselves a disservice.

reasoning it is or could be considered infrastructure/critical
infrastructure and they will get it into the transport queue. It would

Until he gets equipment to the island he can’t really use much help yet. Since
commercial flights have not resumed transportation there is also the issue.

Here is the latest on the FAA situation at San Juan:

FAA said preliminary damage assessments have identified a number of critical
radars and navigational aids were destroyed or disabled during the storm. The
agency is bringing replacement systems to the islands by air and by sea to
restore essential radar, navigation and communication services, and a
long-range radar in Turks and Caicos was made operational Sept. 25.

“Technicians are making their way to a second long-range radar site today
[Sept. 25] at Pico del Este, which is located inside a National Park in Puerto
Rico, on the top of a mountain.,” FAA said. “The last two miles to the site
through the rain forest are impassable, so the technicians are using chain saws
to clear a path for themselves and the replacement equipment.”

FAA is unable to give an estimate for full restoration of service, citing the
extent of the damage and the challenges of the terrain where the equipment is
located.

I am in communication with Gino, he has gear stuck stateside so he and I are
trying to figure out some logistics. It’s a lot of radios!

How do we ship gear to Gino? Do shipments all go by plane? Boat? And more
help is needed there in remote areas according to Puerto Rican Club here in El
Paso that is collecting money for relief.

Re: [AFMUG] PMP450 5ghz AP possible case water intrusion

2017-09-27 Thread Kurt Fankhauser
I have had a lot of them fail for this issue, Cambium was initially
repairing/replacing old 450AP's even ones that were out of warranty until
they realized how many I had. Then they started to say that basically since
it was out of warranty they weren't going to do anything anymore. I have an
email from Matt basically admitting that these units are going to fail in
the 4-5 year marks due to design flaw. He basically told me to drill some
holes in the bottom of the case for the water to escape if it got in. I was
so pissed at his response that I didn't even bother email him back. These
units were spec'ed at 40 year MTBF ratings and to admit that basically
after 5 years they were going to fail really got me upset especially when I
have junk Tranzeo's still out in service that are 10+ years old running
flawlessly.

Anyone here doing Over The Top TV with their subs?
If so, What are some issues you deal with and which content provider are you
working with?
We are looking into Rodeo and RealChoice for this solution.
Being that we are all wireless we want to be able to provide voip and some
video with our higher tier package.

If folks have not looked at a map recently, this is not a three hour cruise.
PR is a long way off. Not close like Cuba. It is way down there.
So you need a truly ocean going vessel that is set up for spending days on the
high seas.

are chartered boats out of florida an option? 15 pallets at t about 2.5 tons
might be doable on a few charters (a fishing trawler might be able to do it in
one)

not going to be cheap, but I'm guessing at this point non critical
infrastructure shipping isn't going to be cheap

btw, the less than reputable shippers are always accessible and can get anywhere

Here is the situation as of this point:

He has equipment he needs to restore his network, it’s stranded stateside
now. I am working multiple angles to get shipment to the island, not easy right
now. One shipment is 15 pallets weighing in at 5.3 K pounds.

Transport to the island is the issue; see my earlier post about FAA status.
