you needed to do foo.bar.com. Are you going as far back as Mosaic or something?

Me too. I remember getting a special doo-dad from US Robotics (or
someone?) that did auto-dial so that we could use more than one computer
on the net at the same time. That experience was part of what drove us
to become a WISP.

I thought the same thing. Netscape added the www, then I switched to IE which
didn’t, so I got in the habit of always typing it.

There are some companies that don't do foo.com and you have to do the www
sub domain. You're just being proactive.

Make sure to add http:// at the beginning and / at the end! Which the kids
probably refer to (incorrectly) as a backslash.

Actually, Firefox perpetuates the idea that domain.tld is equivalent to
www.domain.tld by adding the www for you if it doesn't work without it.

There is actually no technical reason why a website hostname has to begin
with www, it could be www2 or fubar. In the case of fubar.domain.tld,
hosting companies would refer to that as a subdomain, which I dislike.

I think the RFC says domain.com should have an A recordwhich would
actually make it a hostname.
