I think you need to understand Moore's Law isn't the only thing that exists in
the universe. There's more to physics than just that.

Even though data has always been a thing, we didn't start putting it on
computers until like around 1950. Things can start suddenly happening.

Look at GPT-3, that was suddenly an AI that can write some--what like a human -
no it did make REALLY random giberish when shown my Hard Puzzle - but given an
article, damn it some-times looked like a human might have wrote it. GPT-4 does
a bit better, but you can still be sure a stupid person messed up my Hard
Puzzle because it gets lots wrong if shown a big paragraph, at least.

AGI will be a massively incredible thing once made. It will bring us to a
future that seems magical.

Do you think, Moore's Law will just carry on, and nothing will get faster when
AGI is made?

I think not, things will pick up speed, due to AGI. Moore's Law is not the only
thing happening here matey.

As I said before, AGI will be real fast, no need to sleep or eat or exercise
like us, and more intelligent. They will clone much faster too.

I have not really worked out a theory of everything, so it's hard for me to say
much for sure.

Matt, you'll be free when you escape the box of thinking about the world

So fucking easy, we get better algorithms that cumulate the power of
chiplets in ICs. Then we merge flesh in ICs.

2024-04-19 Thread Matt Mahoney
Moore's law is indeed faster than exponential. Kurzweil extended the cost
of computation back to 1900 to include mechanical adding machines and the
doubling time is now half as long. Even that is much faster if you go back
to the inventions of the printing press, paper, and written language.

The problem is what function do you fit to the data? Some like e^(T-t) have
singularities around T = 2150-2200. Some like e^e^t grow rapidly but never
reach infinity. Some like tan^-1 t fit but reach a maximum and slow down.
The fact that the universe is finite suggests this.

Transistor clock speeds stalled in 2010. We can't make feature sizes
smaller than atoms, 0.11 nm for silicon. A DRAM capacitor stores a bit
using 8 electrons. So how does Moore's law work beyond that?

Oh and you forgot to tell that reuters guy that humans have always been slow

Something greater than Moore's law must come yet I bet.

Maybe it has stayed solid for the last 50 years idk...butit won't
forever and somethign faster will gradually then suddenly appear and surpass
its speed.

Re: [agi] Re: Iran <> Israel, can AGI zealots do anything?

2024-04-17 Thread Matt Mahoney
So nothing, really.

I visited Israel and Palestine last June, before the latest battle in this
century long war. One side has genetically high IQ, the other has high
fertility. It will be a long time before this conflict ends.

American 19th century history might give us a clue. The losers were left in
poverty with a tiny fraction of the least desirable land, with the option
to adopt the language and culture of their conquerors as the only way out.
It is the same story in all the old European colonies: Africa, India, Latin
America, and the Caribbean where I happen to be this week.

But that was before women's equality and birth control. Now we have
technology to give us everything we want. Apparently we want to go extinct.
If you want to see what the world will look like in 50 years, look at the
fertility rate by country. In the US, the fastest growing population is the
Amish.

I was contacted a few days ago by a Reuters journalist researching AI
safety. I described how opinions range from everything is fine (LeCun) to
we are doomed (Yudkowsky). I gave my opinion that we are focusing on the
wrong risks. A fast takeoff singularity won't happen because intelligence
is not a point on a line. And gray goo is over a century away at the rate
of Moore's law, if it happens at all. It is true that we can't control an
agent with higher intelligence, but a few billionaires still can.

The real risk of AI is social isolation by getting everything you want, or
actually, everything you think you want. Past despots ruled by fear and
torture, but animal trainers know that positive reinforcement is more
effective.
