[Ai] Renate van der Zee reports from Vienna Austria: The bank that wants to employ more disabled workers: 'It's a win-win situation'

2017-10-05 Thread avinash shahi via Ai
Hope to hear more from Mr Galani who's austria-based about the bank.

In Austria, companies with more than 24 employees have to ensure 4% of
their personnel are people with a disability. But one bank there is
going much further
In Austria, the law requires companies with more than 24 employees to
ensure that 4% of their personnel are people with a disability.
Companies that do not comply have to pay a fine; severely disabled
people enjoy extra legal protection against dismissal.
Bank Austria actively tries to attract disabled employees (its job
advertisements all contain the phrase: “Applications from people with
disabilities are explicitly desired”). Around 7% of its 5,873
employees are people with some kind of disability – significantly more
than the law requires.
Austria isn’t the only country with a quota law regarding employment
of disabled people: Germany, France, Italy, Spain and many Asian
countries have similar legislation. Others such as Sweden, Norway and
the US believe anti-discrimination legislation is more effective, but
only the UK has actually abandoned a quota system (in 1995),
preferring to rely on anti-discrimination legislation since then.
There is another problem with the Austrian quota system: not everybody
complies. In fact currently, according to government statistics, only
23% of the companies meet the quota.

“Employers think the sanctions are relatively low, so many companies
prefer to pay the fine instead of hiring disabled people,” says
Michael Fuchs, from the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and
Research.

The practicalities of bringing up children without eyesight are not,
for the most part, nearly as hard as you might think. Changing nappies
isn't especially difficult if you're used to doing everything by
touch. There's no mystery about it. I don't explore faecal matter with
my fingers, neither do I leave my baby half-cleaned. I simply use a
combination of touch and smell to determine how cleaning is
progressing, and if it gets out of hand and I begin to lose the will
to live, well, 10 minutes suffices for a bath and change of clothes:
foolproof.

Hi,

I recently came across a program called Codex, which I use for converting
Kindle books into more accessible formats. This program can also convert
ePub books. It was developed by a blind programmer and is fully accessible.
Here is what the Website says:

eBooks are a great resource for everyone. Unfortunately, if you're blind or
visually impaired (or even if you're not), accessing them using the software
or devices of your choice can be a challenge. That is the challenge Codex
aims to overcome.

With Codex, you can take the books you've legally purchased from sites like
Amazon, Smashwords, popular eBook stores using Adobe Digital Editions or
Barnes & Noble via NookStudy and convert them to a format of your choice, be
it ePub for reading on the latest devices, plain text to read in good old
Notepad or any of the other supported output formats. This involves
automatic removal of software protection imposed on such files, and a
separate conversion process. However, the two steps can be performed with
one convenient menu command, right from Windows Explorer. Alternatively, if
no conversion is required, you can choose to remove the protection and leave
the original format intact.

Even if your files aren't DRM-protected and can already be read, Codex
serves as an easy, efficient, accessible general purpose eBook converter and
organiser, so why not give it a go!

Download the program from here:

Re: [Ai] complete guidelines for using indian railways with jaws

2017-10-05 Thread bhawani shankar verma via Ai
you need not to type captcha on IRCTC portal. on the login page check the
box for visually impaired. an OTP will shot on your phone both at the time
of login and after entering passenger details OTP for booking. I shall
upload the CCPD order on the matter. however it is not required for the
booking purpose. it is in jpg form, OCR is required to read the order. just
follow the above steps.

no for booking ticket an OTP is required for
 visually impaired persons. it
can be construed on the login page of
IRCTC. this OTP came after a
settlement order of CCPD where I filed
 a petition regarding captcha. hence,
you can let your officers know this
point and would better if you convince
them to make the IRCTC website more
accessible for screen reader. now you
can even book your concession ticket
with this portal easily. many of us
enjoying this facility. you can suggest
them a text based logical captcha if
it is required and for this accessible
captcha example, you may refer them
 login page of licindia.in

Thanks for your suggestions. I formatted my computer and this seems to
have solved the JAWS installation problem. But it still continues to
become slow, inconsistent and a little sluggish on webpages after

what the matter is. NVDA is working allright, but I can't afford to
switch to it as JAWS is much smoother on microsoft word. Please help.

[Ai] RBI Policy: Good news for senior citizens, differently-abled as banks ordered to improve facilities

2017-10-05 Thread Prashant Naik via Ai
In a bid to improve banking facilities for senior citizens and
differently-abled persons, the Reserve Bank has decided to instruct banks
to put in place explicit mechanisms for meeting the needs of such persons
so that they do not feel marginalised. In the monetary policy statement,
the RBI said, “It has been reported that banks are discouraging or turning
away senior citizens and differently-abled persons from availing banking
facilities in branches. Notwithstanding the need to push digital
transactions and use of ATMs, it is imperative to be sensitive to the
requirements of senior citizens and differently-abled persons.
It has, therefore, been decided to instruct banks to put in place explicit
mechanisms for meeting the needs of such persons so that they do not feel
marginalised. “Ombudsmen will also be advised to pay heed to complaints in
this context. Necessary instructions in this regard will be issued by
end-October 2017,” it said.
