I tried with various programs:
“2.0 German version WIN XP: [680m3(Build8968)]”: Document will not be opened,
error message formatting error line 1329, col. 15

“1.1.4 (German) WIN XP: [645m52 (Build 8824)]”: Document will not be opened,
error message formatting error line 1329, col. 15

WORD2000: Document will be opened, but opening takes very much time, in between
error message not enough memory-

WIN WORKS 4.5a: Opens Document without problems.

EditPad light, Only test for file errors: Opens Document without problems (but
of course, undreadable, because this format is not supported).

It seems that it's a problem of the bmwi-software and not an OOo problem, but
someone with more RTF-knowledge should check that (and contact bmwi?)

@bero:
pls. add some more information concerning bmwi-software version, name of the
program you used for creating the document, support address, ...

Thanks, Jim, for this. The change is already incorporated in libwpd CVS, but I
was not able to release because of some instability in new table-related code.
If you have a CWS opened, I am very OK with the patch for libwpd.

I work in an Microsoft Office 2003 environment. So I exchange a lot of
documents with them. Each of these docs contains a mixture of text and
graphics, mainly in EMF (Enhanced Meta File) or WMF (Windows Enhanced
Metafile).

When I try to import those documents OO Writer ehaves in the following ways:
EMF: the doc imports fine. OO Writer freezes when I zoom in or zoom out
WMF: OO Writer freezes on import

All is fine when importing a doc with .PNG or .JPG images

I have documents to test this behaviour

1) Start a new text document
2) Write 90% of the page
3) In the end, after the last paragraph, insert some new lines, but no paragraph
(shift+enter) and proceed with that to the next page
4) Draw a larger rectangle (or other vector graphics), so it doesn't fit on the
first page
5) Try to fit it to the last paragraph, but on the next page
  - You can't: The rectangle is always fit to the first page no matter what.
The bottom border of the rectangle is the page bottom (and the half of rectangle
is cut-off because it's not in the printable area).

A known issue?

Using OOo2.0 on PC running Debian unstable (sid).

sorry for looking stupid: you said in this case, then what's the alternative?
E.g. how can I select this rectangle not by clicking? This is important because
I have a very long document (some 200 pages) and for some unknown reasons all of
the pictures in this file are buggy. Thus I am wasting a lot of time by first
remove the picture then select the draw object, after modification take the
picture back. also, does what you said mean that this bug is arranged to be
killed in the future?

name, using the correspondant function in the File menu of OOo Wrtier, with
Kmail configured as the e-mail application, I get an error message stating the
the file can't be found.

However, everything is working fine with files with non-accentuated character

KWord 1.4.2 can open parts of it but doesn't get all the info.

I agree that probably the bmwi software is buggy, but since M$ crap can open
it they won't care (if they cared they'd output a more standard format in the
first place) and the users will blame OOo (you wouldn't want to hear what our
business guy told me after spending 6 hours to fill out the forms just to find
out he can't open it), so we probably need some bug compatibility with M$
here.

The stuff he used to generate this RTF is the online business planner (web
forms at https://www.bmwi-softwarepaket.de/gp/, as of 2005/11/18). They don't
provide a support address, but there's a contact us web form at
https://www.bmwi-softwarepaket.de/swt/kontakt/?open=5746active=5746 (but
whether or not they actually read what anyone writes there is anyone's guess).

Even if we can get them to fix their output, we should probably fix importing
the broken one -- similar errors are likely to occur on other made for M$
without any testing on other platforms stuff.

Nobody has an idea what a chart wall is. The term chart area is ambiguous
and could be rightfully used for any of the chart's components.
This terminology is simply confusing.
(Please note that the English terminology may be wrong; it's just guesswork
based on the German version of OOo I'm using.)

There are three main areas in a chart, from innermost to outermost:
1) The area where the graphic elements of the chart (dots, lines, pies, etc.)
are places.
Current terminology: chart wall (German: Diagrammwand). I don't know about
US conventions for that, but I'm 100% sure that equating that area to a wall is
not a common mental image for a German!
2) The above area, plus the axes and labels.
Current terminology: chart (German: Diagramm). Now that's most unhelpful:
any other area could have been named chart as well.
3) The outermost area, comprising everything that Chart handles.
Current terminology: chart area. This is just as unhelpful as chart, any of
the three areas could have been named that way.

Hence this proposal:
1) Innermost area is drawing area.
2) Drawing area plus axes is data area.
3) Outermost area is background area.

Reasoning:

1) The innermost area takes up the graphic components of the chart. The entire
purpose of Chart is visualisation, graphics, which is drawn - hence drawing
area.
2) The medium area comprises all the data that are taken from spreadsheet cells,
hence data area.
3) The outermost area is just a backdrop: its components don't move if the data
area is moved or resized, it's just a passive backdrop for all the other parts
of Chart. Hence background.

HTH :-)

I have a spreadsheet that spans (in width) 2 pages.
I select all the data, plus extra rows so I get one more page height
of blank rows. That is, the output should be 2 pages of data (left and right
side), then 2 pages of only grid. But when I choose Selection as my print
option, I get only the left side of data and the left side grid-only page.
(I do not have the suppress output of empty pages option set). (When I choose
either the Pages (1-4) option or the All option, I get only the data pages.)

This bug has existed since 1.1.4

The mouse position often translates to the wrong chart component.
Which chart component exactly, seems to depend on:
a) the mouse operation in question: hovering, left-clicking, right-clicking,
double-clicking (not sure about dragging)
b) the selection state (i.e. which component was selected),
c) the chart state (i.e. whether it's been opened via a double click or not).

This behavior is most confusing, hence the P2 marker.

E.g. any point on a label of the X axis will give me these reactions:
* Hovering will give me a tooltip that says X axis.
* Right-clicking will pop up a context menu of whatever subcomponent is
currently selected (I'd have expected that it will select the X axis and pop up
its context menu).
* Left-clicking will deselect whatever is selected right now (I'd have expected
it to select the X axis).
* Double-clicking will deselect whatever is selected right now (I'd have
expected it to open up the properties dialog of the X axis).

E.g. when hovering over a point outside any component, I get a tooltip of
Diagrammfläche (diagram area), and:
* If nothing is selected, left-clicking will select Diagramm (chart, i.e.
the middle area with the axes and the graphics);
* if the middle area is selected, left-clicking will select Diagrammfläche
(chart area, i.e. the entire area of the Chart control).

I'm pretty sure that numerous other strange results can be produced. The
selection behaviour of Chart is simply a mess, AFAICT.
IMHO, it should go along the following lines:
1) Every point of Chart should be owned by a subcomponent.
2) Hovering over a point should display the tooltip that belongs to the owning
subcomponent.
3) Clicking (left, right, or double) should first select that component, then do
the Right Thing for the kind of click (select for left-click, display context
menu for right-click, open (with a subcomponent-specific definition of open)
for double click).

The context menus for the subcomponents of Chart don't offer enough variation.
This gives not enough clues about what subcomponent the user is actually
accessing with the context menu, so he's unsure about whether he's going to
modify the intended subcomponent or not. (Listing the subcomponent's name in the
dialog title isn't enough. It's a step later, and dialog titles are customarily
ignores. Well, *I* ignored the title and didn't find out that it would give me
the desired clue until I started to investigate deeply enough to write this
series of issue reports.)

Changed that could be useful to fix this:

1) Remove the diagram wall and diagram area entries from the context menus.
The settings behind these menu entries properly belong to the Object Properties
entry of the diagram wall and diagram area, respectively.

2) Don't say Object Properties as first entry. Say X Axis properties, Main
title properties, etc. instead.

3) Place some or all of the tab titles from the subcomponent's Object Properties
dialog in the context menu. That should open the Object Properties dialog with
the corresponding tab already selected.

Alt-tab between two open applications (Firefox + OOo, in writer AND impress)
brings the focus to the menu bar, rather than blinking where I left the curson.

Doesn't happen with spreadsheet, don't really use the other bits.

How can I change the style of any page in my document?
Trying to change a page style on any page only causes the first page to have
its style change.
I followed the directions below.
I am using OpenOffice 2 on Windows XP Home Edition.

To apply a page style:
1.Click in the page that you want to apply the page style to.
2.Choose Format - Styles and Formatting, and then click the Page Style icon.
3.Double-click a name in the list.

When I try to change a page style on a page in a document, only the very first
page changes it's page style. Not the actual page in the document.

Thanks,
Al Winter

The one I use is the last available from SuSE. (Is there a delay between their

I would like to add a comment. OOO v 2.0, Win XP HE SP2. Paste isn't even
*available* as an option for me at all, even after copying the contents of a
range into the clipboard.

Copying does put the contents of the cell into the clipboard, but Paste is
*still* disabled, both in the Edit menu and on the toolbar, as if it isn't even
recognizing the contents of the Clipboard (or even acknowledging that it copied
something). This applies to both Paste and Paste Special... I have tried using
Copy on the toolbar, the Edit menu, the pop-up menu with no difference. I open
the clipboard viewer, and, yep, there it is: the contents of the cells I copied.
 I return to Calc: nope, Paste *still* isn't an available option.

This issue is unresolved and needs to be fixed.

Clear enough?

For example: If you use the style 'first page' then the next page
is 'standard', as you can see in the context menu of the style under in
German 'Verwalten'.

Here's what happens:

1. Select a range of cells.
2. Select 'Copy', either from the pop-up menu, the toolbar, or the Edit menu...

What's supposed to happen is that Paste becomes enabled. On my version of OOO,
this isn't happening. I have opened the Clipboard and verified that the
contents of the cell(s) is(are) in fact there. But I still don't have the Paste
function at all.

[graphics-issues] [Issue 7998] display equations for regr ession lines

I also enjoy using this suite, but I agree with the comments coming here.
Linear regression is essential, and no viewable parameters on that regression is
unacceptable.

What makes it worse is that you cannot even identify the method of regression.
You COULD use the spreadsheet functions to create an equation of best-fit, but
then you are hard pressed to add it as another data series. While being a bit
cumbersome and onerous for the point-and-click crowd, it at least gives you
flexibility. At this point, I cannot even find a way to insert a second series
into the chart.

I was doing labs in spreadsheets for Physics over 10 years ago now. At the
time, we used Quattro Pro.. for DOS. While there weren't Wizards back then,
at least the tool was generic enough to allow us to do just about anything we
needed, and a lot more than any spreadsheet these days does.

Last point on this issue is that while this Issue was first raised here in 2002,
there was an earlier reference on mailing.comp.open-office which received the
same we're redesigning the chart module response:

http://groups.google.com/group/mailing.comp.open-office/browse_thread/thread/66c18445ec2383be/923ef7369b31d651?lnk=stq=openoffice+calc+regression+linernum=1#923ef7369b31d651

Over 4 years and no activity? A competitor could come and go in that amount of
time.

When trying to display the contents of a MYSQL table with a column of type
'decimal' OpenOffice reports

Unknown type '246 in column 0 0f 1 in binary-encoded result set'.

I can reproduce this with a simple table created and populated with:

CREATE TABLE test
(
test_column decimal(6,2)
);
insert into test values('1.1');

My database is MYSQL 5.0.15.

I re-installed it and the error reporter works ... so would it be better to just
submit crash reports from there and not worry about posting them on here any

I have in Calc 3x3 array in a1:c3 with values:
1 1 1
1 1 1
1 1 1
=mdeterm(a1:c3) returns 502 error. I think correct result using Sarrus rule is
0. There are another combinations that lead to the same error.
(Gnumeric returns 0 in same case as expected).

At present, the only way I've seen to align = signs is to use a matrix or
the phantom{} function. This is about the only reason my maths teacher could
give for teaching us the MS word equation editor rather than OOo math.

I think it would be elegant to have a function called align(){}

###Proposed behaviour:
If I type

align(=)
{
V = 2 * B newline
= 2 * 6 newline
= 12
}
(note the = inside the ())

Then it should render as
V = 2 * B
  = 2 * 6
  = 12
with all the = signs lining up

and if I type
align()
{
z = 3 a + 4 b + 8 c + d + 32 e + 16 f newline
+ 18 g + 26 h
}

then it would render as
z = 3 a + 4 b + 8 c + d + 32 e + 16 f
  + 18 g + 26 h
with the first on the bottom line lined up with the first on the line
above it, thereby making the 4 and the + line up

This is an idea similar to LaTeX, which has the invisible character as the
alignment tab ( see
http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~dwilkins/LaTeXPrimer/Multiline.html ), but I don't
know what is used for in OOo

I would like to be able to edit large documents and see on one screen - in one
view the text prior to the change and in the adjacent view the amended text,
the latter highlighted.

Ideally I would like to be able to include my comments as to why I am making
these changes, in a further adjacent view

I would then like the ability to send these views to a third party, so that
they can easily see what was changed and why.

the build than with the original Standard compiler/linker, but now I get this
error:

I think, that Bearbeiten – Datenbank - Verbindungsart corresponds better to the
settings which could be done former in the tab Allgemein and in the tab of the
driver.

files in testdata attachment rar archive
file 1: Protokoll.odt
file 2: Ergebnisse Keno.odt

User opens file 1 and position cursor at bottom of document.
Does a
InsertFile...
and selects file2

Causes OOo to freeze (allocates a lot CPU, no screen refresh, has to be killed)

Same effect on opening both files and copypaste (using menu) file 2 at end of
file 1.

OP tested with Windows XP
here reproducible on SuSE 9.3 Linux

I did change the file 2 name to have no space in filename to no effect.

thb - what is your opinion?

Even when the programs are not available on windows, the patch doesn't remove
functionality for those systems and doesn't render the files incompatible.

#
@thb: You wrote:
 I'm well aware of that, but consider the probability of having pstoedit
 in the %PATH on Windows to be extremely low - in contrast to *nix.

Not necessarily. I don't know pstoedit, but other software such as GTK set the
path accordingly.

And even if it would not find one of the helper programs: You'd simply get the
old behaviour with the red box. I don't really see that as a drawback.
#

I can only see benefits (even though not everyone can benefit from it without
installing additional software).
ImageMagick has a windows-binary version with installer that does set up
everything necessary.
So please rethink the target (I'd love to see this is 2.0.2 - I used the patch
with every version I compiled and could not see any regression)

comment from alsuren (issue 58179)

###Proposed behaviour:
If I type

align(=)
{
V = 2 * B newline
= 2 * 6 newline
= 12
}
(note the = inside the ())

Then it should render as
V = 2 * B
  = 2 * 6
  = 12
with all the = signs lining up

and if I type
align()
{
z = 3 a + 4 b + 8 c + d + 32 e + 16 f newline
+ 18 g + 26 h
}

then it would render as
z = 3 a + 4 b + 8 c + d + 32 e + 16 f
  + 18 g + 26 h
with the first on the bottom line lined up with the first on the line
above it, thereby making the 4 and the + line up

This is an idea similar to LaTeX, which has the invisible character as the
alignment tab ( see
http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~dwilkins/LaTeXPrimer/Multiline.html ), but I don't
know what is used for in OOo

I don't know the RTF-specs, but I'm pretty confident that the parenthesis must
be matching. The attached document has one closing parenthesis more than opening
ones.

When I remove the one in line 1329, then the document can be opened.
Note that the document contains drawing objects on the first page. OOo doesn't
support these yet (see issue 3790).

I want to use a spreadsheet I made three years ago on Excel (it worked then).
I have in it some DB table and use DSUM (BDSOMME in French). The formula is
repeated many times,
but only the two first times are ok. After that the formula gives an error 504.
But I don't see any
problems with the parameters of the function.
I've seen the issue 24811 (and 3140 and 16689), but it doesn't give a solution
in my case.

I want send an attachment with the file that has the problem. The error is in
the cell K21 and below.
But I don't find where I could join an attachment (I use Safari on MacOSX).

I created a Base document with two tables; DEALER and ITEM. The tables are
simple:

DEALER Table
ID : INTEGER
NAME : VARCHAR

ITEM Table
ID : INTEGER
ITEM : VARCHAR
DEALER : INTEGER

The DEALER field in the ITEM table has a default value of zero.
The DEALER field in the ITEM table has a 1 to many relationship with the Dealer
ID.

I am able to create and use the table. When I reload the table, however, I
receive the following error:

The connection to the data source OOoBaseAssociatedData could not be
established.

error in script file line: 4 Column types do not matchmissing DEFAULT value on
column DEALER in statement [CREATE CACHED TABLE ITEM(id INTEGER GENERATED BY
DEFAULT AS IDENTITY(START WITH 0) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, ITEM VARCHAR(50) NOT
NULL, DEALER INTEGER NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT SYS_FK_61 FOREIGN KEY(DEALER)
REFERENCES DEALER(ID) ON DELETE SET DEFAULT ON UPDATE CASCADE]

I have a document that describes the creation of these tables in depth.
I will attache the document, AND the Base file.
I receive the error message with the 139 DEV build. OOo version 2.0 just fails
on the document. The 140 DEV build will not even allow me to create a database,
so I am not even going to try with that version.
