[sw-issues] [Issue 69713] wrong/ugly spacing between symbols in formula editor
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=69713 Issue #|69713 Summary|wrong/ugly spacing between symbols in formula editor Component|Formula editor Version|OOo 2.0 Platform|All URL| OS/Version|All Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|DEFECT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|ui Assigned to|mru Reported by|nbarov --- Additional comments from Wed Sep 20 23:57:14 -0700 2006 --- The default behavior in formula editor (on both Linux and Windows) has too much horizontal spacing between symbols. That doesn't look right, and it differs from how both Word and LaTeX (and probably every other formula editor) work. A partial workaround is to set Spacing = 0% in Format-Spacing..., but that results in zero spacing between a variable and an operator, such as a + b. This can be corrected by entering the formula as a ``+`` b, but that's a huge pain to do for every equation, and it took me a long time to discover the trick. My suggestion is to set Spacing = 0% by default, but add extra space around operators like +,-,=, etc. That will solve most of the problems. The kerning rules could also be improved. For example, when I type xy without a space, the two characters are much closer together than if I type x y with a space between them, even though in the latter case the program still tries to put the as close together as possible (assuming that Spacing is set to zero). That proves that in the case of typing xy some sort of kerning rules are getting invoked. Those same rules need to be applied for any pair of symbols that are next to each other. rant This sort of an obvious flaw is enough to drive away many would-be adopters coming from the scientific community. It needs to be fixed NOW!!! /rant - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=69239 --- Additional comments from Thu Sep 21 00:33:06 -0700 2006 --- With delete a line item, I assume you mean deleting a line from the grid control? By using its context menu, or by using the toolbar's Delete button? Also, with your latest bugdoc, the macro is never called, since it is not assigned to any event in the form. Instead, an event is assigned to the Before record action event of the grid's sub form, but the respective macro is not in the form (thus the error message). Also, the macro you pasted above has an inconsistency between the function name (onConfDelInvDetail) and the return value assignment in the function body (onConfirmDelete). Anyway, I assume nothing of this is really related to the problem. Instead, it seems that somehow, when you switch away from the form and back, or after showing the error message, Base thinks that the *main form* is the active one - thus, the Delete button in the toolbar applies to the main form, while the user thinks it applies to the sub form. That way, the main form's record is deleted, which looks as if all sub form records are deleted. I will do further investigations, and try to strip down the scenario. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. The bad thing here is that visually, it still appears that the cell in the grid control is focused. That is, the user assumes that all toolbar actions apply to the grid control's (sub) form - which they do not do. Instead, if the user now attempts to delete the current sub form record, by using the Delete button in the toolbar, then the main form record is deleted. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I will make a secondary affix conversion script for MySpell dictionaries that you can add to the Hspell distribution. Unfortunatelly, I can build the Hspell OpenOffice.org component only for Linux. Especially if Hspell has special non-portable features for Hebrew (BTW. I'm interesting in it), we need Hspell OpenOffice.org 2.x components for Windows, too. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=66939 --- Additional comments from Thu Sep 21 01:15:15 -0700 2006 --- nemeth: thanks, I'd love to see this script. About the component: The Hspell project produces not just the word lists, but also a sample implementation of a spell-checker which is very efficient (the entire Hebrew word list is compressed with a general-purpose, non-Hebrew-specific algorithm to 100K on disk, and can be read into memory in a fraction of a second). Alan Yaniger (who I guess is part of the OpenOffice project) took, about two years ago, a snapshot of this code, and a snapshot of the compressed dictionaries, and wrapped it into an openoffice component. I never understood why this was Linux specific, but I guess that it's mostly because I use zlib to read compressed files, and Windows doesn't have that. Looking at the package you pointed to, I see that it actually contains compiled code - of zlib and of hspell (an ancient snapshot thereof), so obviously it won't run as-is on Windows. You can take the new version of Hspell from our site and try to compile it on Windows to see what breaks. But I think it's better that instead of trying to revive this old component, we focus on that secondary compression thing. One of the primary goals of the Hspell project was to create a full word list that a general-purpose multi-lingual spell-checker (such as ispell, aspell, myspell, hunspell, etc.) could use, and would not need Hebrew-specific algorithms to be inserted into it. Once we released the myspell version of our wordlist (the openoffice target in our makefile), this goal became reality. If we'll have secondary affix compression of the type you described (and of which I wasn't aware), the dictionary can be drastically shrunk and this would be even better. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sc-issues] [Issue 69712] QUARTILE function works in correctly in some cases
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=69712 --- Additional comments from Thu Sep 21 01:53:37 -0700 2006 --- Hi Frank, http://www.daheiser.info/excel/notes/noteh.pdf Really, there is no standard for quartiles calculation, therefore no 'strong' reasons to claim incorrectness of Excel calculations. However, QUARTILE() is a statistical function and sticking with one (and probably not most popular due to differences with statistic-oriented software) is not good idea. So, my proporsal would be: add third optional parameter to QUARTILE() function, from 1 to 14, to choose method of quartile calculation. Default will be Excel-compatible method. This gives Calc good advantage in compare to Excel, and makes Calc more useful for statistical analysis. Here is some info about different methods of quartiles calculation in use: http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Quartile.html If you'd like to close this issue as WONTFIX (with short explanation), I can file another feature request issue. Thus please could you attach a text(!) document with a) a sample of how an arabic text with a formula will actually be written b) how you think it should be displayed in Math's edit window. (and if it should be aligned right or left in the edit window) Example in english we would write: 1st-word 2nd-word 3rd-word E = mc^2 and would see it that way in the edit window and in the graphic window. Whereas in Arabic my colleague said one would have it written like mc^2 = E 3rd-word 2nd-word 1st-word and everything aligned to the right. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [framework-issues] [Issue 69612] 2.0.4 RC2/Sun provided bui ld calls home without asking
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=69612 --- Additional comments from Thu Sep 21 03:12:20 -0700 2006 --- Please notify us when the specs is changed so we can voice our opinions. I propose this for 2.0.4: Turn it off by default: - for all builds - no new strings - people can try the feature (so we can get better testing) - no negative PR - 2.0.4 out soon - more time to do it on 2.1 (properly) - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I saw a mention that this existed somewhere in 2.0.3, but I don't see it anywhere, nor in the help. Is this an actual online update feature? Or is this *solely* a *notification* feature. If the former, then this will be very welcome, once the bugs have been worked out, and I'll be happy to test it in our office and provide feedback. However, if this is *only* a *notification* feature, then I really don't see what all the fuss is about. Just a simple notification about the auto-update feature before the install, along with a way to turn it off, should suffice, but I surely don't see why this should hold up the release of 2.0.4. I'm much more concerned that simple UI bugs, like this one, get fixed (still not even marked as confirmed, much less fixed in 2.0.4rc2). This has been plaguing our office since we updated to 2.0.3, and I have heard many loud complaints about how that other office application doesn't have problems like this from those who complained the loudest when we took the other one away. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
