[graphics-issues] [Issue 82347] margin handling in impress is not impressive
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=82347 Issue #|82347 Summary|margin handling in impress is not impressive Component|Presentation Version|OOo 2.3 Platform|Sun URL| OS/Version|All Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|DEFECT Priority|P2 Subcomponent|printing Assigned to|cgu Reported by|eponymousalias --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Oct 7 09:18:14 + 2007 --- I am using SO8u8, which I assume is equivalent to OOo2.3. There are several aspects of print-margin handling that are simply infuriating, wherein the output does not appear as expected. The problems are frustrating because it takes forever to figure out what is wrong and what to do about it. I have an old Impress document created with OOo2.2 that used page margins (Format-Page) of zero all around. The actual object boxes on the page have their outer edges at 0.30 from the top/bottom edges and 0.50 from the left/right edges of the page. (I specify this so you can set up a similar document for your own testing.) Now I try to print the Notes under OOo2.3 without changes. I set the printer paper size to USLetter to correspond to the size of my document pages. Now I print to file, and I find the image on the printed page is shifted down and to the right, and the output for just one page is now tiled across four pages in the output!! I did absolutely nothing to request this shift, and it does not represent the document as it appears on-screen. I'm printing with the Default Page options, i.e., NOT Fit to page or Tile pages. The printer I'm trying to print to is of type SGENPRT. The problem is that the program is trying to outsmart the user. STOP DOING THAT!!! The program is trying to displace the image to take into account its presumed knowledge of the printer margins, without adequately informing the user about that adjustment, and in a situation where it's simply inappropriate to make any such adjustment in the first place. For one thing, just because the user is using some particular printer type during the print operation DOES NOT mean that the document will actually end up printed on a printer of that type. What appears on-screen is EXACTLY how the image should appear in the output file. If the printer has a smaller imageable area, then SO BE IT. You also need to understand that, for a printer with an imageable area smaller than the entire page, there is NO REASON WHATEVER to clip the output within the PostScript file to that smaller area. The printer itself will take care of that! If you don't clip, and the user wants to print the same output file on some other printer with a larger imageable area, more of the image will appear, without your having interfered with the process upstream. In experimenting to try to fix this problem, I take the following action. I go to Format-Page, choose Landscape, then choose Portrait. This changes the page margins to 0.39 inches all around, EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT ASK FOR THIS CHANGE. Then I click on OK. Suddenly the entire document shrinks on-screen! How did that happen? I had left the Fit object to paper format box checked, as it had come up in the Page Setup window. But in fact, it has shrunk the entire 8.5x11 page down to fit within the 0.39 margins, which is not what I was looking for. Worse, if I now go back to the Page Setup window, un-check the Fit object to paper format box, and click OK, I DO NOT get back the original scaling. The only way to undo this unanticipated re-scaling is to to back into the Page Setup window, change all the margins back to zero, then uncheck the Fit object ... box, and click OK. But it is rather unlikely that the user will stumble across this fix. One reason is that the Fit object ... checkbox is not a persistent setting. It inappropriately defaults on, every single time the Page Setup window pops up, making it very likely that it will be applied in situations where the user does not notice this change. So please, stop making this option be defaulted on. Continuing the experiments to find out a way around the original image-shift problem, I set all the page margins to 0.25 (with no Fit, so the actual image size does not change). Now printing results in only one page of output per document page, but the image on that page is still shifted. I chose 0.25 in this experiment because the SGENPRT.PS file contains this line: *ImageableArea Letter: 18 18 594 774 meaning the printer supposedly won't print closer than 18/72 inches (i.e., 0.25) from the edge of the page, on all edges. But setting the page margins to this value is not sufficient to get around the problem -- the

To better understand what should be developed, I will address these use cases: A.) TEXT-IMPORT B.) TEXT+LAYOUT IMPORT (non-editable) C.) TEXT+LAYOUT (editable) A.) TEXT-IMPORT === Sometimes, people want to import the text-stream to edit it in their preferred program and use it in their own work. In these instances, the exact layout is not that important, and what the import filter should do is: - generate a continuous text stream [i.e. NOT just every line terminated by CR/LF, like the current Adobe Acrobat select tool] - optimally detect some text-structure: -- like sub-/super-script -- paragraphs -- tables B.) TEXT+LAYOUT === Users need sometimes to complete a document/form. Often, governments and other institutions publish official documents in pdf-format (simple PDFs, NOT pdf-forms), BUT one cannot add any text to these pdf documents. The import-filter should therefore: - import the pdf (both text-streams and layout) as a background - users shall be able to write in the foreground, over the background document [however, this should be handled better than pasting the pdf-document as an image and writing over an image] -- it should be possible to position the cursor on the baseline of a text-line, so that newly written text fits the existing text -- the tool should detect existing text-box boundaries, so that one can write new text extending from those boundaries - optimally, some minimal 'pdf-editing' features should be possible -- move whole sections, e.g. if the new text does NOT fit in the existing free space, move the whole section downwards C.) TEXT+LAYOUT (fully editable) === Of course, this would be a nice feature, BUT - considering the pdf format -, seems a little bit elusive. However, pdf-documents saved by OOo should contain additional information, that should allow importing them in OOo in a fully editable state. At least OOo-generated documents shall allow this editing mode. CONCLUSIONS === There is a new wiki page documenting progress: see http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Writer/ToDo/PDF_Import I think, further comments should go to the wiki-page. I am very disappointed of the Acrobat copy/paste mechanism. There are some critical problems, at least in Acrobat 7: - every individual line is exported with a CR/LF at the line end -- therefore, paragraphs are broken in individual lines and one cannot import a whole text stream -- with a 100+ line document, this is NO longer a trivial task [exporting as txt + gawk processing removes every formatting] - various formattings, like sub-/super-script and underline don't work at all - lists (maybe more difficult to implement) - other layout issues (paragraphs/tables) need significant improvement - import graphical elements, too -- e.g. images between text-streams (both graphic + text stream) -- while, of course the text stream is more important, there are often situations, where one needs the images, too, and here Acrobat fails completely - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=15532 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Oct 7 17:29:50 + 2007 --- I don't understand why this issue is so neglected. It seems so intuitive and standard to be able to do this. It would greatly simplify and speed up working with tables. There are several methods for selecting in OO Writer: - Ctrl/Shift + mouse (only works for text) - Shift+F8 (add mode, only works for text) - Right-click - Select row/column (can only select one) Ctrl/Shift is of course the most intuitive, but if you could make any of those methods available for table components, please... And to emphasize the original reporters original report: It's not even possible to select multiple table rows spanning more than one page by dragging. Anyway, my solution can be used as a patch against older and current OOo versions. And about UTF-8: if your sender name doesn't contain any utf-8 chars, it should be simply ASCII, otherwise leave it as UTF-8. You could try using platform's encoding (Google Mail gets confused with UTF-8 sender names but they look ok in Thunderbird). But then it could be impossible to convert the name to the platform encoding anyway; so in this case we could use utf-8. Anyway, utf-8 only solution is cleaner. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. The autorecovery need is probably real; there is a very good chance that the user was switched out while editing it, and there is a fair chance that the soffice binary and executable was killed (or the whole machine rebooted). The instructions say: Press 'Start Recovery' to start the recovery process of the documents listed below. The 'Status' column shows whether the document could be recovered. Unfortunately, there is no start recovery to press, nor is there any skip recovery to press; effectively, this splash screen locks the user out of any use of writer, even for other documents. This occurred first with an installation of ooo2.0; I was able to get around it once by manually renaming (user)\Application Data\Openoffice.org2\user\crashdata\ and recreating the directory as empty. When the problem recurred, that directory was still empty, so the solution didn't work again. Nor did updating to ooo version 2.3. calc could still be used. writer could still be used from another account on the same machine. I'll attempt to submit a .png screenshot after submitting the issue. -jJ - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. See doc in URL for an example: 2 identical graphs show totally different behaviour when pasted into a Writer document. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
