Save From a copy of the file beforehand, can not paste the file name with

My cashbook can run under OO2.4, but not under 3.1 or 3.1.1. 
The Cashbook package was initially developed in Excel and includes around 13
monthly workbooks, along with a budget workbook, etc. I have about 300 users on
it. Most use it in Excel, but others are using it in OpenOffice Calc. Up until
this year, the workbooks have worked under OpenOffice (although I had to remove
my references to named ranges in other workbooks, in the OpenOffice package). So
that's the rough background.

Have just downloaded the latest OpenOffice 3.1 and when I move to a sheet that
contains a link to another workbook, Calc just keeps running /not responding.
Looking at the soffice.bin process thru Task Manager, it is gradually increasing
memory use. I have to End the process to get out of OpenOffice.
This happens on my Windows XP computer and my Windows Vista computer.
It also happens in my version of the cashbook that I issued last year and that
people have been using successfully.

This seems to indicate to me that it's a problem with OpenOffice 3.1
Have just downloaded 3.1.1 and it hangs in that also. Left my computer running
and went away. An empty pop up window entitled 'Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime
Library' appeared.

Downloaded 2.4 and the cashbook works aok in that. 

Playing around with it a bit, I gradually removed cells /formulas to identify
what the problem was being caused by. When I cleared out the excel format link
to another workbook, Calc could handle the sheet.

If I sit in one of the worksheets within a multi-sheet workbook that doesn't
have an external link, I can go to Edit Links and Calc shows me that it has
interpreted my excel link code aok and is pointing to the desired workbook.
Sample link is ='C:\Users\Rose\Documents\Cashbook2009oo\[Mth01_Sep.xls]Mthly
Financial Statement'!$J$5.  I can't tell you what OO has translated it to, as I
can't move to that part of the sheet to see. But in the \Edit \Links window it
looked aok (oo format) e.g. ='file:///C:/Users... etc

My question is... does anyone know why Calc doesn't like my excel format links
anymore?
Is there some magic setting that I have overlooked?
Or do I have to convert all my external links to OpenOffice format? I had been
wanting to avoid that, as my users are treasurers for not-for-profit orgs and
often transfer the workbooks to a new treasurer mid-year, and it's good if the
workbooks can move between Excel and OpenOffice aok.

It's good that the oo2.4 is still available, but what about my users that have
already installed 3.1 or 3.1.1?

Would love to get some ideas about what else to try /to do.

I checked with "Ooo 3.1.0 WIN XP DE-multilingual version German UI activated
[OOO310m11 (Build 9399)]" (using OS dialogs) and can confirm (more or less) the
reported effect. WRITER also affected, other OOo apps. not tested.

Using OS dialogs, you can save a document as "xxx.xxx.x.#1.oxx", but Export
will truncate the name to  "xxx.xxx.x.pdf", pls. see attached screenshots
with comments.

You can add missing ".#1" in export dialog without any problems.

Not only PDF export is affected, also other document types (png ...)
"Automatic file name extension" is without influence

OOo dialogs will not accept "Eng.103.Week.#1.odp" as a valid name because of the
"#".

Difference between save as and export dialog is at least inconsistent. I do not
see high priority for this.

I think I have replicated this, but I don't think that what I see is a bug, or
if we call it a bug, not a bug that is within the reasonable control of the OOo
team.

Configuration: Dell Precision M6300 1920x1200 display, Windows XP, OOo-dev 3.2.0
DEV300m55, antialiasing turned off

(1) download file prueba.odp from the attachments above
(2) Set zoom to variable so the slide is scaled to fit within the window
(3) Scale the window (make it small, see small.jpg, make it bigger, see
medium.jpg, make it bigger, see large.jpg)
(4) The slide should show vertical and horizontal lines that are styled as two
relatively lightweight parallel lines. Instead, at different scalings, some of
the horizontals or verticals are displayed as one thick black line rather than
two thinner parallel lines separated by whitespace. This looks like the same
distortion identified in attachment: Tue Sep 1 09:50:00 + 2009:
presentation_mode_1280x800.jpg

I see this kind of distortion when resizing windows in other applications. The
display algorithm has a rounding error (I assume) and fills in the space between
the lines. Given that I see this in other applications (Adobe Premiere for
example), I assume this is a minor bug in a library routine used by OOo and many
other applications, or perhaps in libraries provided with Windows. 

The usual workaround is to display the window at a resolution that is an even
multiple of the resolution at which the slide was created, so that we aren't
attempting to draw, for example, a 3-pixel wide area into a 2-pixel or 5-pixel
area. Drawing those half-pixels is a nuisance. Similarly, the height should
probably be multiplied by the same amount as the width.

Maybe my intuition about cause is incorrect but the workaround does appear to
work for these slides on my machine.

When I save an .odp file with the name "Eng.103.Week.#1.odp," Impress
automatically truncates the file name to "Eng.101.Week.pdf." But it does not

This happened just once, so I don't think this is a big bug, if it's a bug at

On Mac with Leopard, using either preview or Adobe 9, it happens about 70% of 
the time with the 10 
slides there.  When I try to export with my typical 40+ slides, it happens 
basically 100% of the time with a 
few of the slides.  So, it is unusable for my lecture notes which include over 
800 ooimpress pages.

Tried to reproduce on Win7, but couldn't find the corresponding file in

Yes, very good points. Greg and his team are maintaining an Open-Source project
at http://code.google.com/p/typeset-dictionary/. This would probably be the
place to start in connecting with them and sharing info. The tool I used to
create the sample is one of the downloads from there, called
SetupPs-1.5.1-2009-08-25.msi The project is quite active. I notice that this
version has already been superceded by a Sept 8 version.

About trying to issue 104901, i found that there is a different, at wich time
default values would be displayed to the user. If you change the default values
in hsql tables by using the GUI, the default values where displayed by opening a
new dataset.

In my oppinion this is a must, because only with this behavior the user can know
where he has to input data.

But if you change the default values by using the /Tools/SQL, the default values
where displayed after leaving the row. This only makes sence if the fields in
forms where not displayed. (An empty field would be filled by user, because he
could never know about this)

Is there a way to change this behavior. Is it possible to get the default values
from the hsql database to the forms or tables to display them, before they where
inserted. The table-GUI doesent know about the values which where set by SQL,
the defaultvalue there is empty.

I did not really know if this is a defect or enhancement.

To get what i mean:
- open attached database
- open "Tabelle1" by double click
- set the courser in "dtText"
=> notice no default values where displayed
- close "Tabelle1"

- open "Tabelle1" in design view
- set default value "dtNumber" to 1
- save and close
- open "Tabelle1" by double click
- set the courser in "dtText"
=> notice default value 1 where displayed immediately

- Open /Tools/SQL
- isert folowing into SQL and execute

alter table "Tabelle1" alter "dtNumber" set default 5
alter table "Tabelle1" alter "dtDatum" set default current_date

- Refresh tables /View/Refresh Tables

- open "Tabelle1" by double click
- set the courser in "dtText"

I have a document that is set up as a table with two columns.

The first column has less than a page of text in it.  The second column has
enough text to fill two and a half pages.  Both columns have inserted images
among the text, though neither has any special formatting.

When I save this document as a word (.doc) document (97/2000/XP), then open it
again, I can only see the first page of the second column.  The rest of the
second column is there, but it does not display

The same table is fine if I save the document as .odt and reopen it.

Assuming I can figure out how, I will attach examples of both the .odt and .doc.

I think, also if redo/undo at a moment is impossible, the entry in menu edit,
the over-button-popup and the entries in tool-customise-menus/keyboard/toolbars

- Suse 10.3: ../soffice -p ../testdoc.odt is using the default printer
   ../soffice -pt   works also
But if you forget the printer name with the parameter -pt, then the OfficeGUI
will open..

I did search most if not all the issues in the database that pertain to this 
same issue.  Unforutnately I have not been able to find a resolution or 
naything that helped me.  I read Issue 95849 and it said to make sure the 
Python-Uno component is installed and it is but it's still not working.  I've 
tried selecting the SMTP to use separate authentication which results in a 
successful "Establish network connection" but fails to "Find outgoing mail 
server".  If I choose to use the same authentication as my POP3 both tasks 
fail.  In both cases the error is that OpenOffice.org could not connect to the 
outgoing mail server.  Check your system's settings and the settings in 
OpenOffice.org.  Check server name, the port and the secure connections 
settings.  I've checked all these things and they are all set correctly.  If I 
have missed something from any existing Issues submitted please point me to the 
one that will clearly give me a resolution.  Thank you in advance fro you time 
and any help.

You can determine for each column, which format it should use in the import
dialog. If the data has decimal numbers, which use a dot as decimal delimiter,
then you have to set the format to "US English". Click on the column header,
then the drop down list 'Column type' is active.

The problem, that the number recognition does not handle it correct for format

The OLE object does not change size, and that is correct. What is wrong is that
the "zoom" as you called it changes. It would be better to keep the same zoom
and size. Yes I know this means that the contents withing the OLE object will
change, but it should because the user changed the format of the original
spreadsheet by inserting a new row or column.

To summarize, the Linked OLE object should, despite changes to the original
file, keep the same zoom and the same size (and referring to bug report 104848
since they are related: it should also keep the same scrolled-to x and y
locations and remain on the same sheet).

Initially, I thought that swe5411's response reflected a failure to understand
the original report because it seemed to miss the initial statement, "I've read
the other similar issues where some of the toolbars apparently don't like to
"share" a line, and this is different."

However, after doing some more testing, I am not sure. 

My results are a little different from swe5411's, which is annoyingly consistent
with the intermittency issue pointed out by scottholbrook

I am working from OOo-deve 3.2.0 DEV 300m55 (Build:9418). (I know that m56 is
out but haven't upgraded yet. I can retest on this if you think that is 
desirable.)
(1) Open OOo to impress

(2) In the presentation wizard, create an Empty Presentation

(3) In my system, this comes up with a blank layout (blank slide), with a
floating Line and Filling toolbar showing. The following toolbars are checked,
when I pull down View|Toolbars -- Drawing, Line & Filling, Presentation, and
Standard. I can see these on my screen. I have lost track of whether these are
the OOo defaults or results of persistent option settings, but anyway, this is
where I start.

(4) On the layouts sidebar, click the icon of the Title Slide. None of the
toolbars change. But the slide now has a couple of text windows. I click within
the top box, "Clikc to add title" and the text formatting toolbar appears as a
second row of icons in the top of my OOo window.

(5) Type "this is a title" and click outside of the slide. The text appears, the
text formatting toolbar vanishes. So far, this is coming-and-going of the
toolbar but I do not think this is incorrect behavior. If I click in the
textbox, the toolbar comes back. I click out of it, the toolbar goes away.

(6) Now it gets confusing. I click on the blank slide layout. There is still a
text box, with the text "This is a title". I click in the box, but the text
formatting toolbar doesn't come back even though I am editing text. I look in
View|Toolbars and the formatting text toolbar is not checked.

(7) I click back to the Title Slide layout. No text formatting toolbar. Click
inside "This is a title" and the formatting text toolbar appears.

(8) Click on the Title, Text layout and the text formatting toolbar goes away.
Click inside the "This is a title" textbox and the formatting text toolbar DOES
NOT reappear. View|Toolbars does not show a checkmark beside the text formatting
toolbar.

(9) Click back to the Title Slide layout. Every other time I click in the This
is a title textbox at the top of the slide, the Formatting text toolbar has
appeared, but THIS TIME, no toolbar. View | Toolbars shows no checkmark.

(10) Click on text formatting in the View | Toolbars list to bring up the text
formatting toolbar. It appears in the right place at the top of the window.

(11) Click outside of the slide (in the gray area surrounding the slide). In the
past, clicking here has caused the text formatting toolbar to vanish. This time,
the toolbar remains visible. This is expected behavior, because I explicitly
said that I want this toolbar on the screen.

(12) click the Title, Text layout and the text formatting toolbar stays on the
screen (hmmm, I am doing these steps as I write this report. The last time, the
toolbar went away, this time it didn't. Dratted intermittent bugs...)

(13) Click on the Blank Slide layout. The TEXT FORMATTING TOOLBAR GOES AWAY.
View | Toolbars shows no checkmark besides Text Formatting.

(14) Click on the Title Slide layout and the toolbar does not come back.

(15) Click in the "This is a title" text in the upper textbox, select some text,
and the toolbar does not reappear.

The symptoms described by scottholbrook and by SWE5411 were slightly different.
swe5411 noted that Text Formatting is checked in the toolbar list even though
the toolbar is not showing on the screen. I have never seen that. Scottholbrook
does not report this but reports that sometimes when the toolbar goes away, it
will not come back until restart. I have not seen that, yet, either. But despite
these inconsistencies, I think each of us is reporting toolbar-related behavior
that is unexpected and inconsistent with the context (e.g. sometimes you get a
toolbar when you select the same text on the same slide with the same layout and
sometimes you don't).

I agree with jfrorie -- 20057 is not a duplicate, this should be reopened. 

I know my users love Word's "make an envelope out of this" feature, and I'll
have trouble getting them to switch (to 3.1) without it; they're generating tons
of individual documents per day, and many of them need envelopes (but it's not
part of the existing merge.) Law firms are like that.

Word's feature takes either your current text selection, or the block of text
the caret is currently in, as long as it's a 3+ line block of text, or finds the
first 3+ line block of text in the document (in that order.) Maybe that's not
perfect, OOO should do its own thing, but it's certainly a much faster way for
users to setup an envelope after they've fixed up a letter. No copy-pasting
required. Also: Word allows you to print the envelope/label without
appending/inserting it into the current document or creating a new document for
it. My users don't really care to keep the resulting envelope, but they do
intend to archive the letter.

All of this applies to one-off labels, too.

In OpenOffice Base, the gui does not permit n-n relations between tables.

For example, given a database with a table of Products and a table of Users:
  a product may have more than 1 user
  a user may have more than 1 product

Trying to build relations between the tables:
connecting UserID in User table to UsersList in Products table is only 1-n
then connecting ProdID in product table to ProdList in Users table 
results in Error:
Primary or unique constraint required on main table: "Users" in statement [ALTER
TABLE "Products" ADD FOREIGN KEY ("UserList", "ProdID") REFERENCES "Users"
("UserID","ProdList")]

(UserList and ProdList have not been populated yet.)

Automatic update (3.1->3.1.1) does not work under Linux.

I have run OOO as root, confirmed to download and confirmed to update. But OOo
does only delete the downloaded file and not install the update. I still have
3.1 build.

Found on ubuntu Linux 9.04 with official OOo 3.1 build (installed manually).
