I had copied everything in my old home directory (dot files too) from my old computer to the new home directory on my new computer, and somehow these settings were lost and invalid. For example, I have "Edit->Changes->Show" and "Edit->Changes->Record" BOTH set. When I start typing in the document (i.e., inserting new text), the text is invisible. By "invisible", I mean that the cursor moves as each new character is typed, but a blank space appears instead of black text. (Font color is set to "Automatic", and the background is white, as viewed in Format->Character.) The old text on either side of the new changes is still visible. When I then set "Edit->Changes->NoShow", then the recently-entered text becomes visible. I have been tracking changes in my OO documents every day for almost 5 years. I'm very familiar with how to use it. It is not behaving as before. I am on a newly-configured ubuntu system, so perhaps one of the fonts is not being picked up correctly or is missing or is corrupted. The odd thing is that when "Show Changes" is off, the text shows up. Zooming in and out doesn't affect the visibility of the newly-inserted text or any other changed text. When Inches are selected as the measurement unit the only thing that appears on the ruler is the number of each inch and a half-inch increment as well as the default tab stops. No smaller increments, such as 1/16ths, or 1/10ths appear either on the vertical or horizontal ruler. This is in distinction to NeoOffice which has 1/10th increments on both the horizontal and vertical ruler. The same holds true if Centimetres are used. The ruler then displays the centimetre and half centimetre divisions, but nothing smaller. This makes setting tabs directly on the ruler much less accurate. I agree with irneb as many of his comments go along with what I have said over the years. Some of your suggestions work closely to what I suggested back in 2006. We think alike. :) -- Now I am working on my document that has been edited on Word and WordPerfect. I was instructed to remove all formatting and start from scratch. This sounded like a great idea. I thought I would follow the suggestions that keep getting told to use RC fans on how to remove formatting. What a good test. Now, I selected the whole document. I went to "Format > Default Formatting" thinking that all formatting would be removed. I was wrong. I still have some sections within the document that I cannot find how they are assigned. I keep getting a status indication for these sections. On the screen I get lines where these sections start/end. I have checked everything and all formatting is listed as default. It is something that can be copied as I have tried to select all text and copy it but the formatting stayed with the text. I have spent over an hour trying to get this out of the document. Reveal codes would have resolved this in a few seconds. It is the only formatting left. I will start looking at this again on Monday. When I export it to PDF I get two slightly differnt page sizes. This seems to be a problem of rounding millimeters to points rsp. inch. Writer defines A5 to be 148 mm x 210 mm . In some cases this leads to a pdf pages size of 5.83 x 8.27 in, in other cases to 5.82 x 8.24 in. This is a tough problem when submittung such pdf files for printing a book.
