Yes, this might be a duplicate of issue 96076 . But the suggestion that a
previous location for each zoom level is stored is a useful addition. I don't
think anyone else has noticed that.

[sc-issues] [Issue 23078] calc should open delimited text files no matter the file extension.

Sounds like linguistic confusion abounds here.

If a user is running calc, they do not necessarily see the file-open dialogue
as general to OpenOffice, but specific to Calc. Someone with that world view
would not expect file-open to cause the file selected to be opened in writer.
The 'principle of least astonishment' should surely apply.

The file-open dialogue should not be involved in any guesswork, it seems to
me. If a text file is selected using file-open from within calc, how is that
ambiguous? The delimiter wizard can be invoked for all such files. No guessing
need be invoked. The delimiter wizard could even have an 'open in writer'
button to appease those who like the present system.

I just tried this in 3.2.0 under ubuntu, and a text file called fred.csv opened
in calc just the way I would hope - via an import wizard about delimiters, and
then into separate cells.

The same file called fred.xls opened in calc in the same manner.

fred.csv was opened with the 'comma' delimiter selected by default. for
fred.xls I had to turn it on by hand, otherwise each row became a single cell.

the same file called fred.txt opened in writer.

It does not look to me as though this problem has been completely run to ground
at any point in the last 7 years, and would bring your attention to the
suggestion from Mar 3 2005.

I just tried this in 3.2.0 under linux, and was able to create a custom field
style -MM-DD-ddd and insert it in a footer.

First I added the field, and got the locale default, then right clicked on it
and selected 'fields' and was able to modify the field format.

Does that mean this is fixed?

Ok, subtle difference in 3.2.0 under unix

The default text location is no longer upper left, but left vertically
centred. So I might never have noticed the original problem as it would do what
I wanted more or less straight away.

But the problem is still the same if I actually wan the text to or bottom
aligned - you have to deselect, reselect, right click pick 'text'.

So 1/10 for changing the default, but the same problem persists that not all the
text manipulation features are on the toolbar.

I'm changing the target to Framework, because writer has the same problem.

Sounds like a brilliant idea to me - but surely GIT, SVC etc. can have input
filters to do the uncompressing before the archiving?

That said, it can't be too hard to add as an extension.

I have been reading the comments, and there is something remarkable about it
all, that might make it worth forking this matter.

The real-life examples given are all about data lists, not calculation. The
world has, for want of a better application, used spreadsheets to handle what
should be in databases. None of these, presumably, require hyperbolic trig
functions or regression (for example)

The WP-spreadhseet-graphic-database paradigm for integrated suites appears to be
fundamentally unaltered since the 1980s and 1-2-3. If huge tranches of
computing users are bending the purpose of the spreadsheet to do something they
cannot otherwise do, then perhaps it is time to invent something else. We no
longer use steam engines on railways, so why are we still using a mathematical
tool to sort and display data?

It is, at the very least, a damning indictment of database applications. But it
is also an opportunity to come up with a new type of application that does what
people actually want to do.

Why can't Mr Steelhoof's clients open the list in Base? what does it /not/ do
that they can do in a spreadsheet? And, therefore, Why does Base not do that?

Be fair, Microsoft can't handle word bullets properly.

My copy of office 2003 mangles the bullets and indenting in style 'list 1' when
I have the temerity to use style 'list 2'. I've saved documents with bulleted
lists unindented, to find them indented next time I open it. And differently
indented the next time.

Last week it reversed the numbering of a numbered bullet point list. I don't
even know how to do that if I wanted to.

I suspect the problem may lie in the .doc file format (which I like to think
of as a bucket of mistakes)

I have just read
http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/project_renaissance_kick_off1
which has as a mission statement
“Create a User interface so that OpenOffice.org becomes the users' choice not
only out of need but also out of desire

I feel that skinning would be a very important part of making this come true.

OK, I was wrong about that.
I just had a frustrating time with a 70-page document that kept jumping to the
end when I switched to 25%, even though a heading on page 21 was selected in the
Navigator.

I don't really know what it thinks it is doing.

I'm set to something called Suse 11 Gillouche, but changing the icon set does
not change OOo. The other two you mention are not there.

Further information
It appears that, when changing zoom, the page displayed is the one currently
highlit in the navigator, even if the navigator is not displayed, or indeed has
never been displayed for that document.

Why when I load the file mentioned above (which contains no headings or similar
devices) the navigator chooses to become obsessed with page 3 I do not know.

Even now I know the navigator is involved I still think there is something odd
about the ergonomics - the page being worked on should be the one displayed
after changing zoom.

I don't normally comment on cosmetic features, but the new icon for the
navigator continues to frustrate me, not least because I have to consciously
look for it.

The oldest one was very obviously based on a traditional compass rose, from the
days of magnetic navigation, and that was fine and very intuitive.

The newest one is just a sort of gold star, of the sort that Employee of the
Month might wear, and has no obvious connection with the idea of navigation at
all. I have to stop and think every time I want to use it.

I was going to make it P5, but it does slow me down when working so I have
chosen P4 instead. I'm entering this as an enhancement request - please supply
a good one.

If the world would only stand still for a bit I'd molish a new one.

I handle a lot of large documents, sometimes with lots of graphics in. I attach
an example full of screen grabs.

SInce the introduction of the multiple page view I cannot easily navigate while
changing zoom.

In the example given,
* view at 25%.
* Put the cursor in page 7 (either select the graphics or the blank line of text
below).
* Change zoom to 'page width'.
* Page 3 will be displayed.
* Use rude words.

I have noticed this on every document I edit - but most of those have headings
etc. that I can navigate around with the navigator. These collections of screen
dumps don't and that makes it more annoying.

I'm not sure this is a duplicate.
4914 was looking for a text-only view without graphics, headers, margins.

This one just calls for the representation of the gaps between pages and the
margins to be shrunken to make better use of screen real-estate.

Those seem to me to be different requests.

Following on from issue 53498, that method of numerical representation should
also be available with locale casting functions. Someone writing a presentation
on a south african machine, could illustrate Indian numbers in his calculation
with such functions.

I have just been experimenting with version 3.0 Beta 2 on XP.

There is now a 'selected sheets' radio button on the print dialogue that does
exactly what I was proposing.

This can therefore be closed, I suggest (issuezilla won't let me do that)

I have just been experimenting with version 3.0 Beta 2 on XP.

It appears that at some point since I made the original report there has arisen
a sort of work-around. If no particular range on a tab is selected, then
selecting 'selection' on the export to pdf dialogue will export only the current
tab.

This works quite nicely, and just about produces the results I was interested
in. But the ergonomic could be a little more obvious when export to pdf is
selected, so I suppose this cannot be closed yet.

The sister issue, 59697, for printing appears to have been addressed.

I made the original suggestion partly because I believed it to be possible.
Back in about 1985 I was using a cluster of VAX computers for software cross-
development, and to increase usefulness obtained a spreadsheet from one of the
DECUS user-supported tapes. That had unlimited numbers of rows and columns,
and used a sparse matrix technique of double-linked lists to store the data.

no doubt there would be problems saving in older microsoft and ooo formats, but
a warning and a choice of saving multiple sheets would cover that.

The unlimited spreadsheet is an idea whose time has come. As, indeed, has a
simple syntax for relative cell references to allow things like Starting at
H2048, 12,000 rows and 8,000 columns

I'm not at home at the moment, and I don't have a laptop any more, for reasons
too boring to go into. When I get home I will download beta 2 again and make
sure what I am running. Unfortunately that is likely to be around the 18th of
august.

OK, I just read issue 87291 and it does seem very similar, although it and all
the duplicates talk about text boxes, not boxes and things. In an ideal world,
of course, the code would be the same

[framework-issues] [Issue 40885] preset content in styles

I still think that having styles-with-content is a valid idea, and commend this
idea as both product differentiation and for OOo 4.

The idea of external style sheets still appeals as well. ('live templates')

Ah. The perils of typing late at night, yes 'not' should be 'now' as you
suggest!

The box or picture I was describing was a mouse inserted thingy. You can also
drag-and-drop png files in from a file manager and get the same problem.

I've mainly been using XP, but have seen the same problem with Ubuntu.

Try this
Insert a default blue box, and resize it with the handles. Then move the cursor
until it changes into the crossed arrows, and try and drag it somewhere. It
won't move.

Now de-select by clicking elswhere, and then re-select by clicking in. It will
not drag-move quite nicely.

Same with inserted pictures.

I've not had this trouble with 2.4 series

I am very surprised this has been closed WONTFIX.

The work arounds suggested are laughable, and it can't surely be beyond the wit
of the authors of the various APIs and macro package to create a small runtime
that can be bundled into a presentation.

There are still 70 votes for this despite being spurned.

I am delighted that there is now a switch to print only the current sheet.

However, the implementation appears incomplete, and the print dialogue
confusing.

If you have 3 single-page sheets, and display the print preview, it is for 3
pages, one sheet per page.

The page range in the print dialogue will be initialised to pages 1-3

If you select pages and enter 1-2, then only one page will print, because the
print selected sheets item is ticked. But that tick mark is hidden under
options, and the law of least astonishment has been broken.

AA: Surely, the two tick boxes could be in the main dialogue, not under an
option button?

BB: Surely the page range should be preset to 1-1 if the print selected sheets
is ticked and there is only one page on sheet 1?

I like the functionallity, but the user interface is clumsy and can cause
confusion.

We have come a long way in 3 and a bit years, but nothing seems to have happened
about this.

I do think that a word processor ought to do many things more than a text editor
- and that differentiating between abbreviations and end of sentence is long
overdue and has impications for internationalisation.

Let's have some real innovation, lads and ladies.

It wasn't too late for ODF in 2001, was it?

I would like to see this enhancement to paragraph borders, page borders, and
cell borders in tables.

In fact, I would expect them all to be derived from the same code anyway

I would have thought that this belonged more in framework as interface
behaviour should be the same in all modules (else it is not an integrated

I am wondering why this is a WP issue, and not a framework one.
I imagine exactly the same tool would be required in Calc, Draw, and Impress.

I have noticed that people only ask for this for spreadsheets.

Are we talking just about the cells of spreadsheets, or about the layout and
titling of graphs as well? Why not documents, drawings, or slide shows?

If a collaboration method is to be provided surely it should be for every type
of document, not just one?

I must declare an interest here: I think organisations that do this instead of
using a database system are stark staring raving bonkers.

Is this a duplicate of Issue 64014?

Confining the functionality to XML would have issues for documents saved in

I have to agree. To have accumulated 91 votes, and for it to remain later
after 5 years does show a lack of seriousness when it comes to user feedback.
The situation is no better with issue 18829 or issue 2497 or issue 7998 or issue
1596.

Surely there should be no 4-digit issue numbers still open by now?

So what about issue 172? A priority 3 defect from the year 2000, still
targetted at later

I have been following this discussion with considerable interest, and have
learned a lot from it. I am grateful for the work being done to improve things.

Now we are talking about saving this attribute it appears, from context, as
though it will be saved in odf format spreadsheets by the method proposed.

What will that mean for ms_interoperability? How about picking up the reverse
axis from excel files?

Frankly, I am not at all impressed with the way that Excel handles reversed axis
graphs, they end up looking a right mess

There has been a lot of debate about the Microsoft ribbon interface, and whether
to copy it.

If we had a skinnable interface, done correctly, users out there could be
contributing their own vision, and perhaps things different again from the
competition.

Thinking about this again - it is still an issue, I believe - Another solution
would be to have an Abbreviation key - such as alt-fullStop. Not only could
that avoid the erroneous auto-capitalisation, it could mark the preceding word
as an Abbreviation style (A word style? see issue# 44879) so that all
abbreviations could later be italicised, for example, or listed in a glossary
(for expansions to be added). Or counted.

I have to agree. 5 years is a rather poor response to a sensible request, and
to 44 votes. Oh, and there are another 46 votes on 5289 as well, reading which
suggests that it is still not in the new chart module.

Look lads, much as I like the product, I need to do this. It matters.

Often when text is imported or pasted it has a hard CR or NL at the end of each
line.

We all now how to use search-and-replace to fill this between margins - replace
\n\n with some wierd thing like QQQ, replace \n with a space, replace
space-space with a single space repeatedly, replace QQQ with a paragraph mark.

Wordstar 6 and 7 could do this for you. Why can't writer?

Why can't we select a portion of text and say fill between margins, style =
paragraph style?

Why isn't there a version of paste_special for the same thing, fill and asign
style name?

Well, you do surprise me. Sorry about that.

Mark you, nothing in the Help file told me about that (the only references to
Fill appear to be for the spreadsheet). It seems a little circuitious, so
perhaps a Help entry could be arranged? can we hcange this to a request for the
help sysem instead, with my faux pas above as a justification?

There are some very good ideas here - I like the one about a user-specified file
extension table. That would be better than a second file-open menu entry. If,
in fact, one could save the column definitions against it so all of them open in
the same format every time it would be one up on the opposition!

I keep falling over this nonsense myself - if I have a delimited file I want to
open in calc I do not want to have to jump through hoops.
