In a table cell, you input only a number between parentheses, such as (3) or
(47), this is automatically converted to the negative value without
parentheses, such as -3 or -47, as soon as you move the cursor to another
place in the document. This is an undesired behaviour, and i can't figure out
how to impede it. I have encountered the problem on both the Mac and Linux.

There is a similar issue with a number followed by a period, such as 3.. On my
Mac, the period is removed when i move the cursor, while in Linux (where i might
be running a slightly older version of OOo) the number is converted to something
that looks like a date, in the format 03.04.10, but oddly, it is not today's
date.

This seems to have something to do with data display format, but i can't figure
out how to change it. If the display format is set to text, the problem still
arises.

Please set this to INVALID. The undesired behaviour does *not* come about as
long as the numeric display is set to text. Somehow, i screwed something up
the first time i tested this. Sorry for having wasted people's time on this!

Thanks.

Has just plain move to beginning/end of line also been fixed. I'm using OOo
3.2 and the relevant arrow keys go to the beginning/end of the document instead
of of the line. What's curious is that if i look in the keyboard assignments,
the binding says beginning/end of line. When will these fixes be available in
a release?

There is a concrete example of the use of numbered examples in linguistics in
the (duped) issue 2204 (see the March 29, 2004 comment). I would like to confirm
stgries's comment that the lack of this feature makes OOo impractical for
writing linguistics articles of any length, and i have often had to express
reservation to colleagues interested in switching to OOo for just this reason. I
am now writing a 25-page article, with about 100 examples. In Word or Latex, if
i remove example (1), all of the numberings, including the references to them,
change automatically. In OOo, i have to go through and renumber each one
manually. This is nothing i could ever recommend to a colleague.

I find it annoying that help is invoked every time i type an apostrophe if smart
quotes is turned on. This seems too agressive. Help should not be invoked
whenever you do some very basic action, like type an appostrophe (Let me tell
you about smart quotes!) or save a new file (Let me tell you about file
formats!)

[sw-issues] [Issue 27894] Small Capitals as a functi on that can be assigned to a key

It currently takes ten keystrokes to mouselessly format something in small caps:

1 to get to the Format menu
1 to get to the Character item in the menu
1 Enter to open the Character dialog
3 to tab through to Effects
4 to scroll down to Small capitals
1 Enter to apply to the selection

Linguistics papers with second-language examples use tons of small caps in the
glosses (morpheme-for-morpheme translations). In a 10-page paper i have just
been formatting, i had to apply small caps to about 100 items. This is a royal
pain in OOo.

OpenOffice.org 1.9.x you can insert the page number field as Arabic letters
rather than as numbers. This is great, but it uses the wrong alphabet order.
When you use Arabic numbers in the same way that in English we use Roman
numerals (such as to number items in a list), you don't use the regular
alphabetic order:

   alif baa' taa' thaa' jiim...

Rather, you use the abjad hawwaz order:

   alif baa' jiim daal haa'...

I posted a query on Arabeyes.org about this issue, and the one response i got
concurred with me. The responder provided the entire abgad hawwaz mnemonic:

abjad hawwaz HuTTi kalaman sa'faS qarashat thakhadh DaZagh

OOo is currently using the regular alphabetic order. It should be changed to use
the abjad hawwaz order.

I am typing a document that has some paragraphs in English and others in Arabic,
so i need for both English and Arabic punctuation to work correctly. However,
even in an Arabic paragraph, when i type a comma between two Arabic words, what
appears is a Latin comma rather than an Arabic comma. The text direction for the
paragraph is right-to-left and i even went into options and changed the locale
to Arabic: Egypt.

Oops! I figured this out. The comma which on the standard Arabic keyboard layout
is Shift+, is the comma you need for typing numbers (as a decimal point). The
comma used for text is Shift+k in the same layout.

There doesn't seem to be any reasonably up-to-date roadmap or release schedule
information on the site. Links to this documentation are on this page:

http://development.openoffice.org/releases/index.html

This link only goes as high as fourth quarter 2004:

http://development.openoffice.org/releases/ooo_roadmap.pdf

As for this page,

http://development.openoffice.org/releases/OOo_2_0_timetable.html

it only goes as far as milestone 59!

I was trying to get an idea of when 2.0 would be released. I can't find this
info anywhere on the site.

The SIL font is Doulos SIL 4.0.12 font beta release (Windows and other):

http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/render_download.php?site_id=nrsiformat=filemedia_id=DoulosSIL4.0.12.zipfilename=DoulosSIL4.0.12.zip

The KacstBook font is in the Kacst fonts package:

 http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/arabeyes/kacst_fonts_1.6.2.tar.bz2

As for the fact that i don't have a problem on one Windows machine, i think that
the machine in question is substituting other fonts for both the Arabic and
English/IPA text. So, when investigating this bug, one has to make sure that the
Doulos and Kacs fonts are actually being used.

Sorry, but to view this file correctly, you'll need two fonts you probably don't
have. This first is the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) Doulos IPA font:

http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsiitem_id=DoulosSILfont

It appears to be this font that causes the trouble.

The second is KacstBook, an Arabic font, available here:

 http://www.arabeyes.org/project.php?proj=Khotot

The Arabic font might not be crucial to view the problem. All of the garbage
text is in the IPA font.

The problem is with PDF export in OOo 1.9.109 on Windows. I don't have this
problem with a PDF export of the same file in OOo 1.9.97 on Linux. I don't know
if this is a regression or simply a difference between the Linux and Windows
versions.

Although i can't comment on whether this is a CUPS problem, i can confirm that i
am using CUPS on both machines i use.

Adding the keyword regression that i forgot to put in when i filed the bug. I
do not have this problem at all in OOo 1.1.x.

Another situation in which this bug arises is when i take a document which has a
print preview setting saved in it, which i have used to print on one machine,
then i try to print that document again on another system that doesn't have
access to the same printers. Even though when i open up print preview on this
second machine the previous two-to-a-page settings are there, on first try the
pages are printed with portrait orientation rather than landscape.

Reopening. I have run through my steps to the letter and am still able to
reproduce this. I do recall the problem not showing up once when i expected it
to. So, when i saw that the bug couldn't be reproduced, i experimented a little.
I found that i can only reproduce the bug if i have not performed any previous
print operations (on any document) in the current OOo session. So, to try to
reproduce the bug, you should be sure to close OOo and start it up again fresh.

This may (or may not) have something to do with another oddity i have noticed.
The first time i open up a either the print options or print dialog, the printer
selected is generic printer, but if i cancel or printer, the next time i do
the same thing, the generic printer option is gone, and instead i have the
real name of the default printer. (And the generic printer printer is no
longer even in the list of printers.)

If you use Print Preview to print 2-to-a-page for the first time on a document.
The orientation change (from portrait to landscape) does not take effect until
after you try to print. This is better described in a step-by-step fashion. To
duplicate the problem, follow these steps:

1. Open a new Writer document.
2. Type some text in it, making it two pages long.
3. Open the Print Preview dialog.
4. Click on the print options page view icon.
5. Under format, change from portrait to landscape and click OK.
6. Click on the print page view icon, and then click OK.
7. The document will print in portrait format rather than landscape.
8. Print the document again (repeating step 6).
9. The document now prints correctly in landscape format.

This has been around for as long as i have i have been testing these pre-2.0
builds, which is about two months. Very annoying!

Part of this issue is a regression. Although the bug was first opened in October
2001, i did not have this problem with OOo 1.0 or 1.1. I only have the problem
in the 1.9 builds. Perhaps this warrants increasing the priority of this bug
(and bringing the target back to 2.0). Something has changed in a way that the
bug will affect more users in 2.0 than it did in 1.x.

Note that in the PDF version of the test case, all of the characters display
correctly.

I believe that all of the characters in question are provided from another font.
That is, they are all cases of font substitution.

Under OOo 1.9.79, some extended Latin characters (ones that i use often!) have
the following behavior:

1. They print correctly.
2. They are displayed as question marks in the editor.
3. They display as question marks in the Insert Character dialog.

This is a regression, since the same characters print and display correctly in
the same font (Lucidasans) in OOo 1.1.1.

I will attach a sample document.

In Linux 680m77 i get a somewhat different behavior: the export function fails
*silently*. When i export the file within print preview, i don't get any error
message, but the resulting PDF file is very small (around 1100 bytes) and it
appears blank in Adobe Acrobat Reader. The same file exports to PDF perfectly if
i export it from the editing view.

Because this fails *silently*, shouldn't this warrant fixing this for 2.0?

A workaround is this (from es on issue 41618):

   1) exit OOo
   2) in a shell type (depending of the shell):
 setenv SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN false
  or
 export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=false
   3) Start OOo from this shell

The bug is still present in 680m77.

Yes, doing export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=false gets rid of the problem entirely.

Thank you for the breakdown of the process and an explanation of CWS. This is
the first time i've seen this explained. I didn't mean to sound impatient. I
just didn't understand how long it would take for the fixes reported to get
incorporated into the public binaries.

With this fixed in 680m78, it will be easier to use test builds on a regular
basis and hence report more bugs. Thanks!

I would just like to clarify the fact that this problem shows up only in 1.9.
OOo 1.1 does not have this problem, and Ctrl+Shft+F works as expected on the
very same machine. So there must be something different about OOo version 1.9
that makes this problem show up, and presumably it could be fixed in 1.9.

This is Mandrake 10.1, KDE.

I cannot reproduce the Ctrl+Shft+V problem.

I found that Ctrl+Shft+F was being used by KDE for full screen mode. However,
when i get rid of that binding, it still doesn't work in OOo if i bind it to
Repeat Search. I'll try another window manager on the same system and get back
to you.

I get the same bug using the xfce4 window manager for Ctrl+Shft+F,
Ctrl+Shft+0-9. (Those are the only ones i tested.)

Forget my initial report on the Ctrl+Shft+V problem. I found the independent
reason for which this wasn't working.

Please consider reopening. I think the reasoning for closing here is absurd. The
platform for which i opened this is Linux. How many Linux users have a Sun
keyboard?

The default key bindings should be reasonable for the majority of people on a
given platform. That is not the case here.

In OOo 680m74, when you try to open a file whose format OOo can't decipher, the
Filter Selection dialog comes up. There are about 70 different items to chose
from, but they don't appear to be in any logical order. For example, the first
four times are:

   OOo 1.0 Text Document
   PSD Adobe Photoshop
   Web Page Query (OOo Calc)
   StarWriter 4.0

The makes it very hard to find the correct item. The items should either be
alphabetized or grouped in some other logical way (such as all text formats
together, then all spreadsheet formats, etc.). I think that alphabetizing is
both the easiest conceptually and in terms of implementation (since it could be
alphabetized on the fly).

In OOo 680m74, there are some preset shortcuts using the Ctrl+Shft modifier.
These do not work for consistently for me. I have different results with the two
i have tested:

Ctrl+Shft+V:
This is supposed to be paste special. Usually when i hit this one, nothing at
all happens, although sometimes, after a while i will start to work. I can't
tell what triggers it.

Ctrl+Shft+F:
This is supposed to be repeat search. When i hit this one, it is always
interpreted as simply Shft+F, and an upper case F is inserted into the document.

I have checked the customize dialog and verified that both of these shortcuts
are supposed to do the things i mentioned.

In 680m71, i cannot run or create any Python macros, even though i can do so for
Basic, JavaScript, and BeanShell. In the Python Macros dialog, i can find the
HelloWorld.py file in the HelloWorld module. (These are sample macros which come
with OOo.) The Delete, Edit, Rename, and Create buttons are all
disabled. The Run button is enabled, but when i click on it, i get a dialog
box which tells me:

star.sun.com.uno.RuntimeExceptionPythonProvider::getScript: can't get
PythonScript

I don't have this problem with the other programming languages. This is a fresh,
unadulterated installation, so i don't think it's trying to use an external
Python installation.

It would be useful to make the text in the error dialogs selectable. That way it
would be easy to copy and paste the text of one of these errors into a bug
report or e-mail message. This would facilitate bug reporting.
