When opened in OpenOffice, the long table (which starts on page 1) gets truncated as it tries to flow onto page 2. MS Word opens the same document and has 5 pages to it. I think this bug may relate to 7791, but there is also mention in 7791 that the problem would be fixed in OpenOffice 2.0 by implementing page breaks. I have found it to be a very reliable indicator of memory usage. My example was meant to show the simplest possible way to reproduce the problem. I have also done batch processing on many Office files and found similar leaks. It's pretty obvious that the memory is being eaten and then freed when you shut down the program.
