I have a document with nested frames. One of the frames is aligned exactly to
the border of the parent frame. The parent frame has a border; the child frame
does not. However, the border of the parent frame is not drawn in the area where
the child frame overlays it. This happens even if I set the frame to wrap in the
background and cause text to wrap through it.
This seems to be a bug; there is nothing in the frame that should prevent the
underlying border being drawn... and it prevents the layout I want to use.

If a frame is selected, to deselect it, you need to click outside the frame.
If the frame is large, and the document zoomed in, this can be difficult (it may
require scrolling the document.
It is possible to deselect the frame by pressing Escape.
However it seems to be a waste of usable clicking space to prevent clicking on
objects inside the frame.
The most common operation required after a frame is selected is to right click
and adjust some properties. Actually left-clicking on the selected frame does
nothing.
So it should be possible to allow left clicking to select other objects within
the frame, but make right-clicking show the frame properties dialog

A text frame in a document can have a Spacing to contents specified in the
Borders tab of its properties dialog
Currently, if any or all of the outside borders (top, left, right bottom) are
turned off, the corresponding spacing section is disabled and no spacing is
done.
However, spacing can be useful within a text frame as a means of designing
layout, even if there is no visible border.
It would presumably be fairly easy to simply leave the spacing box enabled and
apply the spacing, even when a border is not being drawn.
For example, a text frame can be used to center text vertically within another
frame. Being able to additionally specify internal margins within the frame
would enable more intelligent placement within that frame. These techniques are
commonly used in HTML layout in order to produce a flexible layout that allows
parent objects to be resized and the child objects inside them to still be
positioned sensibly

I've now noticed the spacing section under the Wrap tab. Using this one can
insert a spacing region around the frame. The way this relates to the dimensions
of the frame is different though; the spacing is not included in the dimensions.
It still seems to me internal margins would be helpful

On the not ignoring real devices, this is what MSDN says about the mirroring
flag:

DISPLAY_DEVICE_MIRRORING_DRIVER Represents a pseudo device used to
mirror
application drawing for remoting or other purposes. An invisible pseudo monitor
is associated with this device. For example, NetMeeting uses it. Note that
GetSystemMetrics(SM_MONITORS) only accounts for visible display monitors.

The other flag which could be of use in some way is less clear:
DISPLAY_DEVICE_ATTACHED_TO_DESKTOP The device is part of the desktop.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/gdi/devcons_6ynm.asp?frame=true

Since we are enumerating monitors using GetSystemMetrics(SM_MONITORS) already
this seems fairly clear

It's great to see this moving forward. Any chance to get it in for OOo 2.2?

pl: Great! I agree The device name is going to be useless for most people and
once mirroring drivers are excluded it would just be a bit nicer and clearer to
display the device string alongside the monitor number - mainly for those with
dual graphics cards.

EnumDisplayDevices gives the same DeviceName strings as the device names from
EnumDisplayMonitors (when using MONITORINFOEX). So the full solution in my mind
would be to:

1) look up with EnumDisplayMonitors as is currently being done, but use
MONITORINFOEX instead of MONITORINFO
2) for each device string from Enum, look up the Device information using
EnumDisplayDevices
3) Either don't include devices that are marked as MIRROR devices
(preferential), or bump them to the bottom of the list - they're not actually
display devices (as you can see in MSDN if you search for the description)
4) Include the DeviceString in brackets after the Monitor number to help
identify the graphics adapter

Does that make sense? I can provide Python pseudocode if that helps :-)

In the new Multimonitor dialog on Windows XP, I get an incorrect number of
monitors listed. This is running on my laptop.

If I start OOo with no external monitor attached, the Multiple monitors
section of the Slide Show Settings dialog is disabled as expected, indicating
that the number of monitors detected is 1.

If I start OOo with an external monitor attached, and configured to extend my
Windows desktop onto it, the Multiple monitors section is enabled, and shows
the following choices:
  - Monitor 1 (primary)
  - Monitor 2
  - Monitor 3
  - All monitors

Monitor 1 and Monitor 2 both select the laptop display and Monitor 3 selects the
external display.

I have confirmed that the Windows GetSystemMetrics(SM_CMONITORS) returns 1 with
no external display, and 2 with an external display, by calling it using the
Python win32 API.

My suspicion was that the resolution is somehow being used to calculate the
number of displays - my laptop display (primary) has resolution 1280x800 and the
external display 1024x768. However testing with a variety of different
resolutions for each display made no difference.

I tried to look at the code in salframe.cxx but it seems the actual number of
monitors is not calculated there (it just uses it to detect whether there is
more than one monitor)

Have tested with some Python code to see what EnumDisplayMonitors returns.
It seems that even with no external monitor attached, 2 monitorinfos are
enumerated, one of which is some kind of virtual monitor.

I'll attach Python code for enumerating the displays as a quick test (this
basically mirrors what is done in vcl/win/source/app/salinfo.cxx)

The results are as follows with no external monitor attached:
Monitor 0
  cbSize: 72
  dwFlags: 1
  hMonitor: 65537
  rcMonitor: {'top': 0L, 'right': 1280L, 'bottom': 800L, 'left': 0L}
  rcWork: {'top': 0L, 'right': 1280L, 'bottom': 736L, 'left': 0L}
  szDevice: \\.\DISPLAY1
Monitor 1
  cbSize: 72
  dwFlags: 0
  hMonitor: 65539
  rcMonitor: {'top': 0L, 'right': 1280L, 'bottom': 800L, 'left': 0L}
  rcWork: {'top': 0L, 'right': 1280L, 'bottom': 800L, 'left': 0L}
  szDevice: \\.\DISPLAYV1

It seems that DISPLAYV1 is a mirror driver, from a brief web search. It may be
possible to ignore these by using MONITORINFOEX and checking the name, but I
admit I'm not really sure what the best thing to do here is...

pl: indeed, it seems that what would really help here is to have the name of the
device.
This can be got from EnumDisplayDevices, by using the DeviceString for the
corresponding DeviceName. This could then be displayed (probably in brackets
alongside the Monitor N) and would help to distinguish between things.
Here with some Python code enumerating my drivers:

for devicenum in range(nMonitors):
device = win32api.EnumDisplayDevices(None, devicenum)
print device.DeviceName, :, device.DeviceString

\\.\DISPLAY1 : ATI MOBILITY RADEON Xpress 200 Series

Have just downloaded 2.1rc2 to test this feature on Windows XP on my laptop... A
few points of feedback:

1) Connecting a secondary display requires a restart

Although I can connect a second monitor dynamically on Windows, I have to
restart OpenOffice.org (including the QuickStarter) before the multiple monitors
section of the options become enabled.
This should not be necessary...

2) The monitors enumerated are incorrect.

I have a primary and secondary display as can be seen through the Windows
Control Panel Display dialog. But I get the following listed:
  - Monitor 1 (primary)
  - Monitor 2
  - Monitor 3
  - All monitors
Monitor 2 seems to be exactly the same as Monitor 1, and I have to select
Monitor 3 in order to get this to work.

I guess I should have tried one of the developer snapshots to give earlier
feedback :-(

This has been marked CLOSED/FIXED - should I raise these issues in a separate
bug? It feels frustrating if these fixes have to take another few months...
after being so glad that this feature is at last implemented

If I have a file open from a network drive (a shared Samba drive - running
client on Windows XP) and I try and save when the drive is not available on the
network, I receive a message saying the is a General I/O error saving to the
file.
After reconnection, this message is still given even though the drive is
present.
If I save as another name (also on the network drive) and then resave as the
original name, the save is successful
It seems like an open file handle is being kept that needs to be refreshed after
this error...

cl: I have a current build of 2.0.3, and could potentially build 2.0.4.
For each of these cases, if I used the cws (or extracted a patch from it and
applied it), would it be likely to build successfully or are there other cws's
etc that it depends on in 2.1?
I suspect it would be more tricky on 2.0.3 but if there are no dependencies I
will probably give it a go...

Hurrah for cl!
That specification on controlling presentations is really good.
As you will know from the bug above, we started working on some specifications
for the simple multiple screen support and also the more complex part of a
presentation controller (which I agree should go into a different bug) in the
wiki.
Unfortunately (IMHO) the new specification template system doesn't allow for the
same kind of easy collaboration in building specifications, but you may want to
glance through the specifications already written to see if there is anything
you can take for them for the simple multiple screen support:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Impress_simple_multiple_display_specification

Really looking forward to having this feature implemented, thanks for taking it
on

Unfortunately my time availability has decreased drastically so I've been unable
to progress this further at the moment. Anyone else wanting to do it is welcome
to step up!

I've added some details on workarounds to this wiki page:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Impress_multiple_display_support

One of these works on Windows using Microsoft's PowerPoint Viewer and a tool
called multimon, the other is the abovementioned Xinerama idea on Linux.

sb41 Fails on my Windows build (using Visual Studio) in cppuhelper when building
source/component.cxx:
error C2665: 'cppu::detail::cppu_getUnoType' : none of the 18 overloads can
convert parameter 1 from type 'com::sun::star::lang::EventObject *'
Removing the cws causes the build to succeed.
Has this been tested on Windows?

OK I've split the specs:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Impress_simple_multiple_display_specification
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Impress_presenter_mode_specification

A few people have mailed me privately about this issue asking when it will be
finished. Please avoid this, all the information is publicly available here and
on the wiki. It just takes time I could spend coding... But it has been nice to
hear that people are interested :-)

So for clarity: There is no binary version of the preliminary work I've done
available, and I won't make one available until the simple multiple display
options are properly implemented. When that happens, it will be made very clear
here whether there's something you can download or not...

Notes on wiki migration:

I think we should use the same names on the new wiki as there are on the old
one.
So lets first migrate ImpressMultiDisplaySpecification from the old wiki to the
new one.
It would be nice to also migrate SpecificationGuide and SpecificationTemplate
(which was renamed to SpecificationVorlage and then deleted, but it you go to
SpecificationVorlage and click on Show Changes you can see the last version).

Note that the new wiki is using MediaWiki whereas the old one was MoinMoin so
there will probably need to be syntax changes. Add a pointer to the old wiki for
each page and vice versa for good measure :-)

Once all thats done, ImpressMultiDisplaySpecification could be split into
ImpressSelectDisplaySpecification and ImpressControllerDisplaySpecification

Thanks to the gsl developers, we are having a good discussion and getting things
implemented.

http://gsl.openoffice.org/servlets/BrowseList?list=devby=threadfrom=1166618 if
you want to follow the technical details.

In the mean time, for all the enthusiastic non-coders, we need to split the
specification into two parts:

1) a simple option for selecting the monitor to display the presentation on in
fullscreen mode

2) the presenter mode

I propose migrating it to the new wiki at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/ first, using the same name, and then
doing the split. Any volunteers?

Hopefully we will then be able to fast-track 1)...

This sounds a lot more like issue 12719 than issue 52840 - issue 52840 was a
Linux-specific issue about multiple displays, but this is a Windows problem, and
fits in with the general problem of not supporting selecting the display for the
output.
Can someone reopen and mark as a duplicate of 12719 rather?

I think the Specification is getting to a good state now.
I propose that implementation should be split into two parts:
1) Enable a simple selection of the target display in the options, that puts the
presentation onto that display when fullscreen, but doesn't implement any
special controls from the main window ('presentation mode')
2) Enable a presentation mode that would provide better control over the
presentation from the main window.
2) is likely to be much more work than 1), and 1) would be very useful for lots
of people and make OpenOffice.org at least an option for presenting
presentations.
The patch I attached should always use a second monitor for displaying
fullscreen presentations if one is available on Windows, and fall back to the
primary monitor it there is only one.
Work to do:
- find a way to communicate the desired display. This would probably involve
changes to the vcl API. It seems like it would be a good idea to be able to
enumerate the available displays in VCL, and have a way of specifying one on the
pFrame object.
- clean up / revive the patch I had for user interface to select the display,
and make it use the VCL enumerator
- implement a similar patch to VCL for other Operating Systems

Is anyone from the VCL team able to comment on the strategy or at least the API?

Good suggestions, this is definitely worth discussion... maybe you could raise
this on [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It may also be confusing to distinguish between Default language and User
interface language - maybe we need a term like Default language for documents
in the Tools/Language just like it is in the Language Options.

Alternatively, it may be easiest to add a Language Options link to
Tools/Languages that takes you to the dialog, so there is no confusion.

If building for Windows with the build tree on a shared Samba drive, then Visual
Studio gives the following error:
fatal error C1001: INTERNAL COMPILER ERROR
(compiler file
'f:\vs70builds\3077\vc\Compiler\Utc\src\P2\p2symtab.c', line 1609)

This is caused by a problem with Visual Studio and Precompiled Header files on
Samba drives - see the following URLs
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.vc.ide_general/browse_thread/thread/fff7ef004ffce33f/e454ed2ac0c536ca%23e454ed2ac0c536ca?sa=Xoi=groupsrstart=1num=3
http://www.kgarner.com/blog/archives/2005/03/04/todays-computer-hatred-brought-to-you-by/

I got the error in Pythoncore when building python.
This should probably be closed WONTFIX, as I don't think we can fix Visual
Studio or Samba, and there doesn't seem a way around it. But I put it here so
others can find whats going on...

STATUS UPDATE:

I'm getting a number of private emails from people asking if my patch actually
implements displaying on a second monitor. IT DOES NOT. It was only a first stab
at adding options to the slideshow settings dialog, so it really can't help you
for the mean time.

The specification is nearing completion at
http://www.ooowiki.de/ImpressMultiDisplaySpecification so anyone is welcome to
help out with that. Once the specification is complete it will need to be
implemented in code. Thanks to all who have been helping out with this...

In the mean time, there's not much to be done unless you can code and produce
patches based on the specification. This won't go into OOo 2.0 but hopefully we
can get it soon afterwards, depending on developer's schedules.

[framework-issues] [Issue 54417] After installing a langua ge pack, bring up the Tools/Options dialog to change UI language

The main reason this is an issue is for smaller language groups where the
language is not supported by the OS or they are running the OS in a different
language.

The current situation is quite tricky for the average user in a single-user
context. So we need a way to make it easier.

Maybe rather than the Tools dialog we could have a specially designed dialog
that comes up and says A new UI language for OpenOffice.org is available. Would
you like to switch your language? In addition, this could appear only if they
have not selected a language (it is set to default).

This may still not be ideal for multi-user installations though. But lets work
towards finding a good solution.

The first time OOo is started after a language pack is installed, bring up the
Tools/Options dialog before starting, to allow the user to select the new UI
language if desired (similar to the registration dialog).

Issue 33360 was a similar issue for OOo 1.x but that is now obsolete

Snips of IRC discussion:
[davidfraser] I haven't tested as I have been running English and then
installing language packs
[davidfraser] but it would be helpful if after installing a language pack it
gave you an option to switch to that language (or did it automatically)
[paveljanik] on GNU/Linux (at least) it takes your locale setting to distinguish
the language of UI if set to Default.
[paveljanik] what should be chosen if you install rpm -Uvh *rpm in the directory
with cs and sk language packs?
[davidfraser] yes, it would be hard to guess! but maybe the first time you start
up OOo after installing a new language pack we could have a dialog to switch
language if desired
[paveljanik] it would be interesting to analyse the expected behaviour from
users point of view...
[Christof] dialog asking for language would be good
[paveljanik] after installing new language pack? Ie. opening Tools// dialog
would be enough?
[davidfraser] me and dwayne's wives are sitting here testing - they definitely
found it confusing on Windows that after instaling a new language pack it was
still english, you had to find that dialog to change it...
[Christof] yes, after installing new langpack. I think, opening the dialog
should be enough, the language choice is somewhat hidden deep in preferences
[paveljanik] I think it could be in the same please the dialog asking for
registration is tested/shown.

I'm not sure how the /cygdrive/ got left out as it is actually generated by the
cygpath instructions I'm running.
But the trailing slash does seem to be what causes the problem.
So I presume we should do one of the following:
  * modify guw.pl so it handles the double slash
  * generate the include path properly so it doesn't have the double slash even
if the PSDK path has a trailing slash
  * generate a warning/error if the PSDK path has a trailing slash in configure
  * automatically remove trailing slash for PSDK in configure

I'm trying to build on Windows. The build is getting stuck building ICU. It says
cannot find windows.h
I wonder if this is related to the guw.pl errors about not converting -X
switches at the top of the log (below).
Unfortunately its a bit difficult to debug as cl.exe is being given its
parameters in a temporary file which gets deleted after build fails.
The output is below, I'll attach my winenv.set.sh and configure

The two /cygdrive/c/... paths are for /cygdrive/c/DevTools/MICROS~2//include and
/cygdrive/c/DevTools/MICROS~1.0SD//include
Not surprisingly, these are the two paths that guw.pl reported errors on.

The problem is the double forward slash in the path. If I replace those double
slashes in SOLARINC with single forward slashes it runs OK.

Note: a similar problem occurs using Python, even if I replace the // in
winenv.set.sh
It seems like it comes from having a trailing slash in the PSDK definition

is: sx is definitely not the correct ISO code for Southern Sotho, so that must
imply that Microsoft has a totally confused classification here. Also Sutu is a
very rare and unusual name for Sotho that is hardly used anymore, so either they
are referring to a different language or they are really confused.

I would recommend we create a user LCID for Southern Sotho unless this is
cleared up

[l10n-issues] [Issue 50987] Complete support for Sout h African languages

Liz, my understanding below:
Sesotho sa Leboa is Northern Sotho. This was originally a government
pseudo-fabrication that covers several languages, the official variety of which
is a dialect called Sipedi.
Sesotho is Sotho or Southern Sotho.
Siswati is also called Swazi in English but hardly ever Swati. Swazi is
the Zulu word for Swati (which the English name of the country Swaziland comes
from - hence the name of the country in English is Kingdom of Swaziland but in
Siswati is Umbuso weSwatini).
Whether or not to include the prefix is a matter of variation (to the degree
that Language in South Africa, a definitive textbook on languages in South
Africa, has a section debating whether to use them or not). In most official
government documents they are included.
My experience in day-to-day speech is that I think the general rule is that the
single syllable prefixes beginning with S are adopted more commonly than the
others...
Xhosa is commonly used without the Prefix
Zulu is commonly used without the Prefix
Tsonga is used more often than Xitsonga
Venda is used more often than tshiVenda
Ndebele is used more often than isiNdebele
Siswati / Swazi are both used
Sesotho / Sotho are both used
Tswana / Setswana are both used

However speakers of these languages may be more likely to use the name with the
prefix when speaking English.
I think Dwayne can probably make the best call as to what to do here...

I've started looking at this again for 2.x after the integration of
presentationengine01.
I thought I would start from the other end this time and have added an item to
the Slide Show Settings dialog to select a display number. My first time working
on dialog code so I'm sure this could be inmproved ; I'll attach a patch.
thb, do you have any further help on where to add the display code now that
presentationengine01 has been integrated?

thb: wow, that was fast :-) I'll have a look
the attachment impress-display-option.patch adds a number chooser to the Slide
Show Settings that lets you select a display number (currently limited to 1 or 2
with no intelligence as to what is actually possible).
I disabled reading it from the options as that crashes the system (not sure how
to add it as a new attribute properly).
Screenshot coming.

I'm not proposing that the existing UI should be used but I was trying to get
this done and I needed something to proceed with... But very glad you are
wanting to work on it!
In the mean time I've started a wiki page to put together a specification here:
http://www.ooowiki.de/ImpressMultiDisplaySpec

Hopefully those that aren't programmers could help with writing the spec
following the link that thb gave.
The options idea seems good so that should of course be included in the spec.

Note: I have created a Specification template in the wiki based on the official
one, so just follow the link - its just a case of filling in the sections. A
fair amount of this could be done by copying text from this issue. If you
haven't used a wiki before, its an easy way to edit stuff over the web - just
give it a go!
If you want to see this bug fixed, this is a nice way to help, the more
technical details can be filled in later by those who know how...

Tswana is spoken in both South Africa and Botswana. It is the national language
of Botswana, and one of the nine official languages of South Africa. There are
about 1 million speakers in Botswana and over 3 million in South Africa.

As far as I am aware, there is no significant difference between the language in
the two countries - I am not sure of what the policy is to do in this case. If
you need a regional code then it should have both _BW and _ZA, but where we can
do without one that should be fine.

[installation-issues] [Issue 4729] Provide installation set for Windows as self-extracting .exe or .msi

I think the point is not that the setup.exe is not needed for some people (with
old Windows Installer versions etc).
The point is that some people know they have Windows Installer installed, and it
would be simpler to give those people a single msi rather than requiring them to
download a zipfile, unzip it, and then run the installer.

I'm also pretty sure that WISE and InstallShield allow you to include the
instmsi files in a single executable with the msi bundled into it, so presumably
this could be possible here as well (using NSIS or suchlike).

From what I recall the setup.exe reads the Windows locale to decide which
language to launch the installer in. Is that correct? Is there no native Windows
Installer support for determining the correct language?

For the READMEs they are usable within the package anyway and presumably could
be made available from the same download location.
It seems like setup.exe and setup.ini are just used to launch the msi
installation anyway. Is there any other critical functionality / reasons why
they are needed?

As far as I understand you should be able to create a single MSI file that knows

rafaelda: That's because its been fixed in a child workspace dbwizard3, which
hasn't yet been integrated into the main branch, so it isn't in the version you
downloaded. You can examine the child workspace at the following URL to see when
it is integrated:

http://eis.services.openoffice.org/EIS2/servlet/GuestLogon

Or just watch Pavel's blog:
http://blog.janik.cz/
He usually announces new milestones and which workspaces have been integrated.

Just checking whether this may be a problem in the translate toolkit ... are you
translating using PO files or another method? Or are these Sun translations?
If using PO files could you check the strings in the PO files and report here.
