This is unexpected behaviour. Had the user been pasting plain text I would agree
that it should receive the format of the previous character. However the OOo
default behaviour is to paste formatted text, in fact the text is still
formatted bold.

When copying and pasting text in a document, the wrong fonts are used. Tested in
Open Office 3.3 on Kubuntu 10.10.

Steps to reproduce:
1) In a new Writer document type "Title: this"
2) Highlight the word "Title" and format it bold and underline.
3) Highlight the word "this" and change it's font.
4) Copy the line, now paste it in a new line.

What happens:
See that the text "Title" is in the wrong font.

Steps to reproduce:
1) On a new OOo install, go to Tools -> Options... -> Language Settings ->
Languages -> Locale Setting and set the locale as English (Canadian).
2) In a black cell type this: "2005-9-2".

What happens:
The cell displays "05-09-02".

What the user expects to happen:
The cell should display "2005-09-02" as per the configured locale.

English (Canadian) is -mm-dd, and clicking on the cell it can be seen that
the Formula Bar does in fact correctly show "2005-09-02".

I have enabled Right-To-Left support in OOo with this setting:
Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Language -> Enabled for Complex Text
Layout

Now I correctly have Paragraph RTL and LTR buttons on the toolbar. However,
these buttons cannot be removed by right-clicking on the toolbar and selecting
"visible buttons". These buttons should be removable like any other toolbar
button.

It seems the "in place upgrade" is broken. When I remove the extension and
reinstall from the file downloaded in my web browser, the PDF open feature works
as expected. When I reinstall 1.0.1, then "in place upgrade" to 1.0.4, the
feature is broken as described in the OP.

I am changing the bug title to reflect this.

this was an in-place upgrade from version 1.0.1: I pressed "Check for updates"

Up to version 1.0.1, the [Sun|Oracle] PDF Import Extension would open PDF files
in Draw, and hybrid ODT-PDF files in Writer. In version 1.0.4 both file types
open in Writer with the PDF header, not the content.

Steps to reproduce: Install PDF Import Extension 1.0.4 in OpenOffice.org 3.x.
Open OOo, click File->Open and choose a PDF file (either hybrid or regular).

What happens:
This text is displayed in Writer:
%PDF-1.4

<>
stream
x¥]k$ַ#†ןחW4ה־ Q}W5ˆׁH‚#|a"נֵג#»kl#%#עקSUחtקTקי~#

What was expected to happen:
The user expects the PDF to open for editing.

Currently OOo supports some characters for lists:
* Bulleted list
1. Numbered list

An additional list type that would be helpful would be checkmarks, like this:
[] A checkmark list

Other software currently supporting checkmark lists include Zim and KDE's
Basket. When making lists in Writer I must revert to using a bulleted list, and
changing the bullet. However, that workaround does not provide for a way to
comfortably check the boxes, leading to the second part of this RFE:

When clicking on a checkbox, it should get a checkmark. Both Zim and Basket
support this feature.

The attached document was created in OOo Writer 3.x with the PDF Export plugin
installed, I do not remember if the Hybrid option was enabled or not when
exporting. When opening in "soffice" on Kubuntu 9.10 with OOo 3.2, the
application that opens is Draw, which indicates that this is not a Hybrid
document.

When opened in Draw, the text is backwards, that is that the letters are in the
revers order in the text. So the text "שלום עולם" appears as "םלוע םולש". The
file displays fine if opened in Okular or any other PDF viewer.

On my system, Impress defaults new documents to Right-To-Left. This is fine,
that's how I want it! But opening pure Left-To-Right documents, I have the text
properly directioned as LTR (periods at the right side of sentences) yet aligned
to the right. For instance, see this presentation:

> Or do you need a view side by side? This would be then issue 91001.

No.

This issue proposes a single file with multiple documents.

Example: _Current_Calc_behaviour_: A user can open expenses.ods in Calc and
within that file are three sheets: homeExpenses, businessExpenses, and
hobbyExpenses. Within the single expenses.ods file are three different, but
related documents.

Example: _Desired_Writer_behaviour_: The user would open resume.odt and within
that file are three sheets: englishResume, hebrewResume, and russianResume.
Within the single resume.ods file are three different, but related documents.

Thanks, ES, but this is not a dupe. Issue 12686 requests that multiple files be
opened in a single Writer window. This issue requests that multiple Writer
documents be stored in a single ODT file, just as multiple sheets can be stored
in a single ODS file.

For instance, I am writing an essay in three languages. I need all three of
those documents to be in a single file. In Calc this is easy, the user opens a
single file and he can have multiple sheets. It is exactly this sheet feature of
Calc that I suggest for Writer as well.

I had tried to use Master Documents, but it is the exact opposite of what I
need: Master Documents lets multiple files be combined into a single document. I
need a single file to hold multiple documents.

Calc lets users have multiple "sheets" in a single file. As each sheet is a
document unto itself, it would be great if something similar could be done in
Writer. I.E., a Writer file would have multiple documents or "sheets".

Thanks.

As a user and one who supports multiple OOo installs, the OS environment should
only affect the default directionality of new documents. The OOo UI should not
affect directionality at all. The whole purpose of having OS locale settings is
to set user preferences for these things, regardless of which UI language is
choosen.

However, for opening existing documents, directionality should be as per the
document. No matter what OS settings or UI settings, document objects that are
RTL should be displayed RTL and document objects that are RTL should be
displayed RTL.

I do not think that will be much of a problem as current OOo-created ODT files
are in-house only in the organizations that I am familiar with. In fact, this
issue is one of the reasons for that. However, labs (and households) with
multiple computers will have to update all machines to OOo 3.3 together. Again,
this should not be a problem.

Why remove the terms "left" and "right" from the UI, or have any other UI
changes? As it is, it is very understandable and works exactly as expected (it
is very intuitive) other than the fact that OOo is not compatible with other
office suits. I understand that the code needs to be changed, but the UI is very
intuitive and in my opinion should be left as is, and the user experience should
remain exactly as it is.

I agree with christophnoack that the notes' directionality should be per-user,
not per-page or per-paragraph. No matter if I'm writing a paper in English or
Hebrew, my notes are in my mother tongue, even in collaborated documents.

Alternatively, could OOo not determine LTR or RTL based on the first
directionally-strong character in the note? I am familiar with other software
that do this, and it is great as natural sentences in either language usually do
not have a foreign word as the first word. Even those that do, can be easily
reworded or the user can manually switch directionality.

When inserting a note into a Right-to-Left document, the note by default has
Left-to-Right directionality. The note should have the directionality of the
page by default.

> Editing does not default to US format.

I concede that you are right. On my test system the locale was configured for
LANG=en_US.utf8 and LC_TIME=en_DK.utf8. Changing the LC_TIME did not affect the
cell's number format, but changing LANG did. To clarify: when entering
"-MM-DD" into a cell, the formatting of the cell for both display and for
inline editing became that associated with LANG: "DD/MM/YY" for en_US and
"DD/MM/YY" for he_IL. The formula bar showed in place of YY.

Therefore, one issue is that OOo is using LANG for setting time, not using
LC_TIME. I will search for a bug on that and report it if necessary.

> It takes the locale from the
> cell's number format, which by default is the system locale, and then
> uses that locale's date-editing format, as defined in our list of
> locale data.

Our list? Where is that list? Why isn't LC_TIME being used for this?

> As indicated by the summary, this issue is only about special treatment
> for ISO 8601 format.

This is in fact the format that I am interested in. Quick experimenting in Calc
shows that only the Hungarian and Lithuanian locales in OOo use the -MM-DD
format, and they both suffer from other issues where I would not use them. I
suppose that a dedicated ISO 8601 locale would be a workaround, but the fix
would involve (as I see it) using LC_TIME for the editing format.

Thanks.

Dupe Issue 109588 confirms the issue for Kubuntu, Windows, and Mac. Furthermore,
it occurs on BiDi and non-BiDi versions of the software, so the Summary of this
issue must be updated.

The presence of this bug means that Hebrew and Arabic users cannot use OOo to
make the very common (at least in the Middle East) document of a notice with
tear-off phone number strips along the bottom. This is because numbers are LTR
characters and the accompanying text would be RTL. It is not a stopper, but as
shai2platonix points out it is a very important issue.

Writer cannot show numbers and RTL text together vertically.

Steps to reproduce:
1* Open a new document (LTR or RTL, both are affected)
2* Create 10x1 table (10 columns, 1 row)
3* In one of the cells paste this info (without quotes):
"""
דותן כהן
054-7881700
""""
4* Select the entire table
5* Format -> Character -> Position -> Rotation -> 90 degress

Note that in RTL-enabled systems, by playing with the LTR/RTL settings I can get
the text _or_ the numbers to be vertical, but not both.

Actually, we do agree. I cannot understand the "least significant unit in the
middle" date format. Do those users have their clocks set to HH:SS:MM as well?

> My default "date format" may not be the same as your default "date format"...
> But a spreadsheet's default format for data is numbers... or else it would
> be a database... not a spreadsheet. :)

With this in mind, I agree that the "Default Format" should not necessarily be
the format that the spreadsheet was created in. Rather, the "Default Format"
should be the preferred format configured for the user (or, lacking that, the
format configured for the user's locale). Therefore, this bug may depend upon
bug 5556 (date format in the formula bar not matching that which is set for the
OS - unexpected behaviour) and bug 72229(add an option to configure the date
format - feature request).

>

While I agree that that "bug" is a UI issue, the fix in my opinion is not to
change the text of the UI but rather to bring the application's behaviour in
line with what the UI suggests.

> There is no silver bullet. Date operations are made on integers. Not 2
> individuals will agree on what is a default format for a date depending
> on what type of use for that date they want.
>

No two individuals have to agree! Calc should use the format used when entering
the data. For instance, if the user entered "2010-02-11" then Calc should use
-mm-dd and if the user entered "27.10.2010" then Calc should use dd.mm..

Of course there is the problem of ambiguity when the user enters "10-12" but
that problem is currently assumed in Calc anyway, so Calcs current behaviour
(barring any open issues) should be preserved in these cases. That is, if Calc
currently recognizes "10/12" as dd/mm/yy then that behaviour should remain. But
currently, if the user enters "10-12" and pressed Enter, he sees "10/12/10" in
the cell. If he then chooses "Default Formatting" the cell should display
"10-12", not "40463" as it currently does.

It seems that OOo 3.2 has the facility of detecting if the document conforms to
the ODF spec and handling non-compliance:
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/3.2/rc1.html#general_odf

>From that page:
"""
The document integrity check now proves whether an ODF document conforms to the
ODF specification (this mainly affects ODF 1.2 documents). If an inconsistency
is found, the document is treated as a broken one, and OpenOffice.org offers to
repair the document.
"""

Therefore, OOo can now treat both the wrong behaviour (current code behaviour)
and the correct behaviour. Therefore, the argument that the fix would break
compatibility to older documents is no longer valid.

When the cursor is moved to the beginning of the first cell of a table at the
start of a document, text entered does not appear at the cursor position.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open new Writer document
2) Create 2*2 table
3) Type Hello
4) Move cursor to beginning of cell
5) Press Enter

What happens: Despite the cursor being shown in the cell, a newline appears
before the table (i.e., not at the cursor's location).

The nonprinting characters feature is used to determine if redundant or unwanted
nonprinting characters appear in the document. It currently shows spaces as
nonprinting characters. In my opinion, a single space is in fact a printed
character, even though it technically consists of zero pixels. Therefore, I
propose an option that single spaces _not_ be marked when showing nonprinting
character. However, multiple spaces should in fact be shown when displaying
nonprinting characters so that their presence can be dealt with.

I understand that spaces are in fact a special corner case, which is why I
suggest that this feature be optional, not mandatory.

Thanks.

This is definitely a defect and unexpected behaviour. Other applications, such
as the Firefox web browser and the Kate text editor do not clear the selection
when the selected text is deselected.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open new Writer window, type "Hello, world!", and press enter 10 times
2) Highlight the word "Hello"
3) Move the mouse pointer down a line or two and press the middle mouse button
4) See the text "Hello" pasted where the mouse cursor is
5) Now click somewhere on the screen to remove the highlight from the original
"Hello"
6) Move the mouse slightly below the second "Hello" and middle click
7) See that there is nothing pasted

So apparently the User Experience team made a bad decision. It happens, but fix
it.

> It would also break compatibility to older documents.

So put a flag in newer documents that they are compliant, and use the old method
when loading documents without the flag. Or one of a hundred other workarounds.
But past wrong behaviour should not prevent future correct behaviour, especially
where interoperability is concerned. RTL users (about a fifh of the world's
population) cannot use OOo to interoperate with other office suite users.

Calc can currently auto-format cells based on the numerical data entered into
them. For instance, when entering the data "29/12/2009" into a cell with the
default (Number-General) formatting, Calc currently correctly formats it as a
date.

This issue asks that this auto-formatting be extended to auto-format the cell so
that the format auto-configured matches that of the data entered. Examples:
1) Data entered as "00351" should be auto-formatted as a number (Calc already
does this) with two leading zeros (Calc does not yet do this).
2) Data entered as "29/12" should be auto-formatted as a date (Calc already does
this) with the mm/dd format (Calc does not yet do this).

When a cell contains only RTL and neutral characters, the cell should always be
displayed as RTL.

Although I understand that a sheet can be configured as RTL and this issue is
then solved (actually the right way to do it), MS Excel will display a cell as
RTL if it contains only RTL and neutral characters, even if the sheet is LTR.
Therefore MS Excel users do not format their sheets as RTL, and these documents
look "wrong" in OOo. Therefore, there is argument to have this behaviour only in
.xls documents.

@advisor:
To clarify, this bug is an RFE to have these numbers formatted as follows:
"ab" formatted as "ab:00"
"abc" formatted as "0a:bc"
"abcd" formatted as "ab:cd"

This is assuming the "hh:mm" format, and of course as guraknugen pointed out it
should be fit to what ever format is configured.

Your comment mentions that data is not only appearing in the wrong format, it is
being interpreted incorrectly by OOo. I would say that, as you describe it, that
is a dataloss issue and in fact makes this RFE a severe bug. Can a dev elaborate
on whether to change the Issue Type to Bug and raise the Priority as this is a
dataloss issue?

Thanks.

please mark it as such. I do not seem to have permissions to mark as dupe.

I apologize for the delay, rainerbielefeld, I was swamped with university
studies and could not answer.

This is not a dupe of issue 77973. That bug requests a specific option to set a
date format, this bug requests that when a number is identified as a date it's
format is set as the format used to enter it. Please reopen the bug and remove
the dupe marker. Thanks.

When a user enters a date, currently Calc recognises that this is a date and
formats the cell with the default date format. The bug requests that instead of
reformatting the cell to the default date format, Calc would set the Cell Format
as the format of the date entered.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open Writer
2) Create 2*2 table
3) Enter the date 2005-09-02
4) Tab to a different cell
5) Right-click date, change format to -MM-DD
6) Change date to illegal value, such as 2005-09-44
7) Change date to legal value, such as 2005-09-14

What happens:
The date format returns to the original date format

What I expected to happen:
The date format would stay as it was configured

I see the point, thanks. I suppose that fonts are no different than any other
issue.

Where is the page that lists known features to avoid in OOo to ensure
portability? I would like to see if fonts are mentioned there, but I cannot find

Then maybe this option should be used only when the user is saving in a
non-native format? OOo already warns that _some_ formatting may be lost, but
this would be an easy way to suggest to the user how to increase document
compatibility.

Of the twenty or so OOo users I know, most only use .doc format to interoperate
with users of other office suites. However when straying from Times New Roman,
Ariel, or Courier they suffer document fidelity issues.

You are right. Only Times New Roman, Ariel, and Courier seem to be portable
across Linux and Windows (I have no Mac to test). That is why I suggested that
the check be optional, not the default.

Please add an option to warn when non-portable fonts are being used. Most fonts
available on any particular OS are not available on other operating systems.
Font substitutions in this case can affect document layout, as glyph widths will
most likely differ. Thanks.

@mh:
Just because you don't know how to make the change does not seem like a good
reason to WONTFIX the issue. Maybe someone else knows how. Maybe a feature
request needs to be filed with Bugzilla (this seems to be a bugzilla
fork/clone). But WONTFIX is not the answer.

Thank you Rainer, but I would rather avoid such workarounds. I myself am not an
OOo guru by any means, and I am just helping an organization (actually, two
organizations) use OOo in place of their usual office suite which is not
available on their new OS. I would like to introduce as few complications as
possible, and macros are certainly out of bounds!

If this issue could be resolved for OOo 3.2 it would save these guys quite some
time and frustration. It would also make their decision to move to FOSS look
good, as they knew that a lot of functionality would be missing in the beginning
but as issues are filed things would get better. I'd like to see that actually
happen.

Thanks!

When using the copy / paste features of Calc, the application works with
formatting as well as data. The application needs an option to make the default
copy and paste operations be plain text. Currently, the user must use the paste
button's dropdown menu to paste plain text.

This is especially important when working with documents that have sections
separated by borders: Calc will erase the borders of cells if "unformatted text"
is not careful selected at each paste.

Not all print drivers support N-up printing. It would be nice if OOo could
support this natively. Thanks.

There was an error in my last comment it should read:

It would be nice if Calc just showed the data as it was entered. If the user
enters "03102008" and Calc reformats it to "2008-10-03", then the user clicks
Default Formating, then Calc should show "03102008" and not "39874".

There seems to be a lot of confusion here. Let's summarize:

When editing a date in Calc, the date format used to edit the date does not
match the date format configured for the cell, nor does it match the date format
configured in the user's locale. This bug complains about the edit date format
not matching the format configured for the cell.

Another bug may or may not exist (if there is, then please link to it) which
complains about the edit date format not matching the date format configured in
the user's locale. A related bug (bug 72229) requests that the edit date format
be configured separately from either the date format configured for the specific
cell or from the user's locale date format.

Steps to reproduce this bug:
1) Right-Click on a cell -> Format Cells -> Numbers -> Category -> Date ->
Choose format 31/12/1999
2) Enter into that cell my wedding day: September 2, 2005: 2/9/2005

What is displayed?
February 9, 2005: the day of a car bombing.

What is expected to be displayed?
September 2, 2005: my wedding day.

Note that on this system the configured locale date format is -mm-dd.

Actually, as this issue is requesting a separately configurable date format for
the formula bar, I think it is a dupe of bug 72229. Bug 5556 requests that the
formula bar use the same date format as the cell is configured for. At least,
that is the difference that I perceive between the two bugs.

Note that the point of this bug is that when the user configures a date format

close this bug on account that OOo is using the locale default. It should not do

When editing a date in Calc, the date format used to edit the date does not
match the date format configured for the cell.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Right-Click on a cell -> Format Cells -> Numbers -> Category -> Date ->
Choose format 31/12/1999
2) Enter into that cell my wedding day: September 2, 2005: 2/9/2005

What is displayed?
February 9, 2005: the day of a car bombing.

What did I expect to be displayed?
September 2, 2005: my wedding day.

I presume that Calc is using the OS's configured locale for entering dates,
alas, this is _not_ the expected behaviour. I expect the OS's configured locale
to be used right up until the point that the user configures a different format.
When that different format is configured, I expect it to be used in all relevant
situations. That means both viewing _and_ editing.

Thanks.

In my opinion the best way to satisfy all users would be to have the user create
a template / master slide, with a placeholder for the image itself, and possibly
other information such as XMP or IPTC data that may be in the photo. Thus, if
the user has XMP descriptions in his photos, he can make an Impress template
that shows the image wit the description below.

When creating new databases with Base, one of the steps is to "register the
database in OpenOffice.org". To the casual end user, this sounds like creating
an association between the database files and some website. It has been
suggested that the text be changed to:

"Register this database as data source for other OpenOffice.org modules?"

The new text has these advantages:
1) It is clear that the data is not being shared online.
2) It explains to the user what the registration is for.
3) It explains to the user how he can take advantage of the registration.

I can confirm this bug in OOo 3.0 on Kubuntu 9.04

An easier way to verify is to open both the odf and doc versions in two OOo
instances. Page 9 appears blank in the doc file, the same page is populated in
the odf file. However, performing a search for the text that should be there in
fact finds the text.

In what program was this document originally created?

Although I am a OOo advocate and I have turned 15-20 people into OOo users (all
from MS Office), for my last projects I have been using KOffice (the KDE office
suit) because of the file dialogs. There are just too many files in too many
directories for each project to be restrained by the terrible GTK dialogs.
Please implement this feature so that I could use OOo for _all_ my projects. It
is ridiculous that I am using an obviously inferior product for my projects when
the only thing preventing me from using OOo is something so trivial as a file
dialog. Thanks.

I appears that one can paste newlines into Calc cells only _after_ there is
already text in a cell.

To reproduce:
1) Copy text containing newlines.
2) Paste into empty cell.
3) Observe that each line is in a separate cell.
4) Type a character into an empty cell.
5) Copy text containing newlines.
6) Double click cell from step 4 to activate text cursor.
7) Paste text into cell, after the established character from step 4.

What happens: The newlines are pasted into the cell
What I expect to happen: Each line would be in a separate cell, as in step 3.

I do not know if this issue is now a bug or an enhancement request, so I will
leave it as it is and let a dev decide. Thanks.
