Technically it is an enhancement. The spreadsheet does not give incorrect
answers, it just shows the wrong bit of the correct answer.

But the poor user could be forgiven for not really appreciating this subtle
difference if (s)he trusts and uses the answer seen ...

OOo 2.4.1 on ubuntu Hardy

I teach in a secondary school. We still have some problems, and I have to make
templates for the students to overcome them.

You can only link to the next frame if it is empty.
You make a frame by highlighting text and using insert-frame.

Any programmer and can see the problem!

I make a chain of empty frames for my 'fold-out' pamphlet. To help the users, I
want to pre-position images and/or text boxes for them. No problem on the first
frame, I can insert an object, no wrap (or whatever I want), anchor to frame job
done. But if I want 'no wrap' I have to select it before I anchor to frame.

But I cannot anchor an object onto any other empty frame. I can anchor it to
paragraph or character, but to anchor it to the frame I must first flow text
into the frame, then anchor my object to the frame and set up its wrap
properties. If I want no wrap, I have to set it up before anchoring to frame.

Having populated all the frames with the furniture I remove all text to leave a
blank template.

Incidentally, some of the settings I make seem to disappear as I manipulate text
and frames. In the attached template I have the 'continued in column x' text
boxes successfully placed at the foot of each frame. Putting a similar text box
at the top of each continuation frame saying 'continued from column y' is more
proctalgia.

I'm sure there are good reasons for the rules determining what I can and can't
do, and why the no-wrap option has to be applied before the anchor. But what I
am trying to do cannot be considered exceptional, and the way I have to do it is
not what I want to have to show my impressionable pupils. I want them to like
OpenOffice!

If you have a usability panel, challenge them to get a class of teenagers to set
up their own template with top and bottom continuation messages, then paste a
story onto the chain and edit it to make it fit.

mba:
quote - You are confusing things here. - end quote

I observe that as a user of both XPpro and ubuntu clients, I see consistent
behaviour on the school network when failing to open files on Linux Samba
servers by clicking on browsed icons.
It is an OOo feature, not an OOo-on Windows feature, since it is evident in the
MS-free zone of Debian server and Ubuntu client.
In all the same situations, if I replace OOo with Adobe Acrobat the problem goes
away. IMHO that makes it a cross platform issue for OOo.

For my personal purposes, the work-around is to export all my documentation to
PDF format (no hardship for what I publish) then everything works for everybody
who needs to see (but not to change) my material.

But OOo as a working tool for pupils to replace MsOffice is not viable for the
earlier reasons.

On MS clients an alternative work around is to use mapped drives, and some more
competent users can and do occasionally use this route - but there is no real
point to the hassle.

Ubuntu does not even have the concept of the mapped drive.

Please don't think of this as a Microsoft Only problem. In a Samba-server based
environment it hurts Linux users too.

If you really do believe OOo has two separate bugs responsible for this
cross-platform behaviour, I will raise a separate issue. But sooner or later I
suspect it will be Duped by somebody and we will all be back here together
again!

Chris

There is still a problem.
Confusing - at home, ubuntu client OOo2.3 and now 2.4 will open files by
clicking on a samba-browsed icon on a Debian Linux (Etch) server. This is the
target behaviour exhibited by nearly every application I use - and most notably
Adobe Acrobat. So far so good.

At school, neither OOo version works like that - on Windows 2003 server or Linux
(old Mandrake or Debian Etch). And that is irrespective of whether the client
is Ubuntu (Feisty - not yet risked upgrading to Heron) or XPpro (not yet risked
Vista)

One word of caution - the number of combinations of client, server, OOo version
and opening method has not been systematically tested at school (limited
opportunity) and at one stage (under battle conditions!) I thought it was
working. Sadly the effect was not reproducible.

But Adobe always works.

The only known generic difference between the home network and the school
network is loading. The intention is for the two to be as similar to one
another as possible so that my own development work can be piloted at home then
safely ported in.

Hence my puzzlement. I may have an unwitting config difference (but I think
not) or we may have a timing problem

Meanwhile, for staff and pupils, OOo has this user hostile feature that
encourages users to keep their data on the desktop or in my documents, relying
on their roaming profiles to sort everything. With 1000 users randomly
choosing one of 250 wireless laptops, every laptop would end up with potentially
everything on it - and out of disk space!

And wireless logging on of 60 users in two adjacent classrooms with massive user
profiles would be impossible.

So in spite of my belief that our teaching should as far as possible be vendor
neutral, I cannot recommend OOo for widespread use. I merely make it available
to pupils whose family circumstances indicate they need it at home.

This really is a significant useability issue for workplace adoption.

Good news - bad news .

The good news - this may be fixed now in 2.3. (I have not had time to test it
properly on all platforms.)

The bad news - it is not a win98 issue. On platforms as recent as XP and Ubuntu
Feisty, earlier versions of OOo fail where all other applications succeed -
namely opening files on CIFS named paths to Samba on Linux.

The good news - we did something differently on 2.3 so presumably a developer
somewhere has tried to fix it. 2.3 seems to work on Gutsy. I have a half term
break coming up and I'll try to check it out on 98, XP and Vista.

Debian Etch up to date with Debian OOo 2.0.4
Word processed document created. .gif image pasted. Seems OK at first..

But move the image or do anything with it and half of it disappears.

The problem seems to be in the file, because the file itself only has half the
image when exported to a WinXPpro machine.

The same process using the same text file and the same image file works fine
on XPpro (so I have a work-around)

Column E of the spreadsheet attached has conditional formatting in the main
body of the table (rows 7 to 174) This indicates whether the value in E is
greater or less than the corresponding value in column EU.

If I insert a new column between E and F the relative reference used for the
comparison is not updated.

In general, calculation references survive the insertion of rows and columns,
but conditional formatting references do not. Ugh!

On another W98SE (OOo version 2, W98SE also 4.10.A but WinFast A340 Display

My home W98SE (4.10.; Cirrus 5446 PCI v2.00) is also OK

I have two other home systems I can try it on, but they need OOo2.0.2 installing
first. I cannot do that at the moment.

I have lots of W98SE systems at the school where I work, but school is closed
for 2 weeks.

Confirmed in OOo2.0.2 on Debian Linux.

It has been with me for a long time - am I the only person using bullets in Draw

Still with me in OOo V2.0.2 on Debian Linux.

If we accept this behaviour, I suggest we make 'bulletted' a property of the
whole text box, and apply bullets as well as the numbering sequence explicitly
to every paragraph in the box.

That would expose the feature deficiency, make the workarounds unnecessary, and
make the behaviour predictable.

This issue should probably be linked to 38000 and 25244. All three can be
circumvented by the same interim strategy until a fix is possible.

For what it's worth, I would vote to fix it properly by making all the writer
tool(s) work on text boxes, even including the importing of data fields. But
I'm a user - and I do know it's easier to ask than to deliver.

Ouch -
OpenOffice.org v2.0
This has bitten me again, and this time it seems to be a functional defect.

I have a text box with paragraphs that seems to be stuck in a progresively
indenting format with no user interface to correct it.

The offending paragraph starts 'Your website'
The one after starts 'To get ...'

See formatbug.odg to be attached.

Open my spreadsheet, add a sheet, put lots of data in.
Save it (lucky!)
File Page Preview
Format Page (Page tab isdefault)
Change from Portrait (default) to Landscape

Both radio buttons show, system freezes.
Can't close things - eventually get everything closed.
Reproduce simplest case:

Open calc (Untitled)
File Page Preview
Format Page (Page tab isdefault)
Change from Portrait (default) to Landscape
Both buttons show, frozen.

Open IE, search for existing issue - not found
Report Issue
Go back to check details - Page style dialogue has unfrozen and works when
reverting to protrait - but the image depicting the portrait page overlays the
landscape image for several seconds.
Try going to landscape again - takes several seconds.

Close everything, reload calc and try format page without going to page preview
Same behaviour - seems to be a hostile feature of this version.

Open the document, file print, select page 1, six copies.

First prints OK, so does second, but there is then no page throw before the
third, fourth etc. so they do not register properly.

See also issues 25711, 30122, 45472, 47675, 50555 which have similarities but
for one reason or another are not now addressing this issue AFAIK.

In case it sheds some light on things, I have the same problem trying to load
from a Samba server when the client is a Samba client on the up-to-date Debian
Sarge. This is an older versin of OpenOffice but the completely open, wholly
non-Microsoft setup might clarify things.

OOo.1.9.125 (Beta2) on W98SE
Create new database (unregistered) called test in My documents.
Open and create new table in design view.
Create name (text) address (text) and customerID as an autogenerated integer.
Close, Save (table name customers) and get the 'No primary key' message.
Accept the 'create primary key' offer.
Error while connecting to the data source message.
The table is corrupt - Field names have been shifted down, but field types have
not.
Row 1 has been overwritten.
OK
Error message disappears. Second field type corrects itself to text - sometimes
after clicking elsewhere.
customerID field type is missing but appears later after some clicking about.
The table can be saved if the customerID field is deleted from the table
definition.

I can't see how to set a compound primary key - if the facility isn't there it
seriously limits the usefulness of the database.

If the facility is there, then improved help would be very welcome!

Thanks

The attached document ends slide 2 with a graphic that has several layers.

The bottom layer is a light green implemented by making a green rectangle with
transparency.

Next there is an opaque white circle to prevent any interaction between the
transparent green and the transparent red circle in a higher layer.

The opaque white isn't opaque

After loading, deleted the penultimate sheet
On the new penultimate sheet reformatted two charts back to x-y format. (exOOo
version 1.0 something, which had been turned into bar charts instead of x-y
plots when imported, just checking no data had been lost importing).
Then deleted the sheet - and lost the document.
The recovered docment (to be attached)looks like the original with all the
original sheets.

PS finding the route to edit the charts back to x-y format was almost too
tedious to be successful. A 'reformat' on he first right click menu as an
alternative to Edit might make the route simpler. Users often want to see what
a chart will look like in a different format.

The problem is reproducible (XPproSP2) but my earlier recollection was
inaccurate...
I deleted sheet3 _and_ sheet2 successfully, having been unable to edit the
charts on them (they were grouped with other images)
It crashed on the sheet 'Buchenham' after reformatting the top two charts to x-y
line charts, when I then tried to delete it.

NB Ignore the text on the Buckenham sheet - this is archaic referring to issues
I had with the very old version of OOo when I was very new.

OOo 1.9.113 is the first version I have tried that does not associate itself
with .sxw files out of thebox.

If this is deliberate, could we please put the Sun file extensions on a par with
Microsoft and invite the user to decide at install time whether to make the
association.

The problem seems to be how XP deals with associations. If I log in as
Administrator on this same computer I get 1.1.2 assocations as shown in sxw3.gif

So it looks as if a user of 1.1.n who upgrades to version 2 could find the 'all
users' associations of the new installation will be overridden by any 'per-user'
associations s/he made for 1.1.n

This XP feature could be a bit tricky - especially if MS use the same file
extension for their 'Open Document' processor, and different users all need
access to OOo but have different preferences. (As happens on my school
computers, and quite independently on my family laptop)

If possible, it would be nice for the install to scour the system for archaic
associations like the ones on this system, and update them all. An install
option to retain Microsoft .od? file associations on a per user basis even for
an all user install may also be needed, with some way of letting the various
users make their choices if necessary. Whichever way we go we will need to
work on the wording of our help files!

Trying to save a document brought into writer as .html I find I cannot save as
an OOo writer file. I have to export it. OK but ugh.

The export dialogue file formats field is too small for the file format
descriptors, and does not scale when the window is widened.

This looks like the persistently recurring issue 34896 and its many predecessors
- is this enough to raise its status to 'confirmed'?. The bug behind these many
reports may also account for other issues (eg49725?) so it will probably reward
any effort that can be spared on it.

Attached is OOo spreadsheet called logic, in native formay and as exported to
Excel.

The purpose of the spreadsheet is to demonstrate the functioning of logic
circuits, so it has various gates, a crossover bridge, and connectors
programmed. It relies on a large number of iterations to equalise voltage
signals along the connectors.

It renders better in Excel but that is a different issue.

Looking at the grey line at the bottom right, it has a connected end labelled
Ground, and an open circuit end with a cell that simply reflects the right hand
end voltage back to satisfy the formula for the end connector element.

Change the value in T16 to 5. The modelled wire behaves properly in Excel,
going to 5 volts along its length. It does not behave properly in OOO calc.
See the screen shots.

Report transferred from Issue 45472, 24 May 2005 with minor update since then..

I print various labels on an Epson lx-400 tractor feeding a roll of single
labels.

The attached document was fine in earlier versions (not sure which version was
the latest I used on this computer) but on 1.9.100 pagination 'creeps' both
when printing multiple copies of one label, and when printing successive labels.

There were orientation issues on the earlier version fixed by getting page and
printer settings to work together (Issue 30112 and 25711). These settings have
not been changed - it is a straight import from 1.1.n and the file is still
saved in that format.

I am investigating the extent of the creep - it seems to vary, possibly
depending on font sizes used. I have started using explicit page breaks on
recent labels with some success, and this might be OK as a workaround if I can
confirm reproducibility. I'll try to boost my priority on it.

[framework-issues] [Issue 37020] multiple warnings about disabled Java appear when opening Macro Selector

In writer without a Java RTE I inadvertently clicked the Macro tab in picture
properties. Then I clicked Background. I think I got to background before the
Java message arrived - but now I am stuck in what seems like an interminable
loop of repeating error messages.

The only option is to kill the job and risk losing my work...

This is not a good UI for the uninitiated. It's OK for me - I know OOo doesn't
(usually) lose my work, it has a fantastic recovery system.

And as a bug reporter I can find this information, and try for a bit longer to
confirm that the loop is indeed finite, and after enough OKs it starts to behave
properly.

But we really should try to get this sorted out before the masses flock to see
our genuinely superb version 2. Can't we disable the tab if it really does need
Java, and there isn't one?

Attached png showing path.

I suspect it's an issue with the type of path.
I'm not clever enough to change the oplock settings in Samba from the default
(which I think is enabled) but on my little home network there's only me. At
school I share four Sambas with 350 other terminals. The problem is the same in
both places (and I put all the Sambas in).

If it sheds any light on the problem, OOo seems to be quite happy writing out to
a network path. but the same instance will not then File Open what it has just
File SaveAs-ed, even after a File Close.

The Save As dialogue box has a tighter display format (more files visible in
narrower columns) than the File Open dialogue. Whilst it may be totally
spurious, it suggests they were programmed by different people - or at least at
different times. Do they handle the paths differently?

Using spreadsheet to compile a report (3 columns landscape) and wanting to
repeat column headers (issue, analsis, action) on each page, I needed to
consult Help on repeating rows.

With Help open I set up the repeating row by hand, then went back to Help.

Reading on a bit, I saw the alternative formats (1 or $1) and was curious to
see which format the mouse-dragging option would use. On going back to the
(still open) repeating rows dialogue I saw the MSXP error window.

I will attach the spreadsheet as it is, and a .gif of the error dialogue.

The attached Word2000 file imports with oversize images and changed aspect
ratios. It also loses borders (added to issue 41297 and probably need not be
considered here).

As you can see, it makes interoperability of OOo and MSoffice a non-starter in
this school.

The attachment is triplicated - here, 41297 and 32711. Is there a way of
attaching one file to more than one issue?

I was unable to reproduce the crash when I filed the report, so it's possibly
something to do with concurrency in my computer at the time, or possibly the
first time use of an old format document, or some other transient problem.

If Sun received an identifiably related crash report shortly before the original
issue was filed, that might shed some light on what was happening to invoke
crashrep. If anybody can 'read' the windows report it might shed light on what
crashrep did. Otherwise this is just one of those things to remember one day
when something more tangible sheds more light on it.

If it doesn't illuminate anything right now I recommend downgrading it to P4 or
P5.

Unaware of any previous problem, I was invited to recover a damaged document
when I reopened plog2.sxc to use it again.

After recovery I elected to send the crash report for analysis.

Crashrep itself crashed - two .gif files show the information available.

plog2 was 'access denied' when I tried to copy it, so I recovered the OpenOffoce
window to close it and found two copies of plog2 open.

Both were closed discarding updates and the original (hopefully) plog2 put into
the .zip I have no idea why I got two.

Sorry to clutter the issues list with a probably unrepeatable fault - but it may
shed light on other issues...

Please include in your debate how we deal with the awful Microsoft fiddle over
paper size. We really don't want Microsoft immigrants to find problems they
never had before.

The merit of the MS strategy is a traveler can print her document on a local
system anywhere in the world on A4 or letter without page number changes or
ugly new pagination.

The problem arises when a non-itinerant MS user discovers on migration to OOo
that all her life she has unwittingly been using a non-native paper size. (And
probably wondering why the margin settings etc. were never quite what she set
them to.)
