As hdu says, OOo Writer uses the same line spacing as the TextEdit does.
Hiragino font family seems to have relatively large vertical spacing attributes.

For the difference between Calc and Writer, Writer uses ExtLeading attributes of
fonts and Calc doesn't. If you set Tool - Options... - OpenOffice.org
Writer - Compatibility - Do not add leading (extra space) between lines of
text, Writer won't use the ExtLeading attribute. See also issue 89954.

@hdu @pl:
I can confirm this bug is identical with issue 93155. gravis + space should
commit 'GRAVE ACCENT' (0x60), but the bug in insertText() treats this input
method event as a normal ASCII key input by keyboard.

IMHO, this should be fixed in time for 3.0...

Text input of a single ASCII character using input method with preedit causes
mismatch of input state of OOo.

Here is the way to reproduce the problem

1. Set Hiragana input mode of Kotoeri on OOo Writer.
2. Push '1' key.
   - This will show 'FULLWIDTH DIGIT ONE' in the preedit with blue color and
the under line.
3. Push 'space' key several times to convert the 'FULLWIDTH DIGIT ONE' into
ASCII 'DIGIT ONE'.
   - This will show ASCII 'DIGIT ONE' in the preedit with blue color and the
under line.
4. Push 'Return' to commit the 'DIGIT ONE'.
   - This should commit the 'DIGIT ONE' (expected behavior).
   - but actually, it will show committed 'DIGIT ONE' plus still showing the
uncommitted preedit with blue color and the underline. Also, the internal state
of input context mismatch between the input method and OOo.

This is because insertText() procedure in salframeview.mm assumes a single ASCII
character input is always come from without preedit. However, as shown above,
it is also possible to input these character using complex input method.

Attached single line patch to check the MarkedText should fix this problem.

Just confirmed that aquavcl08 built on Tiger works without the Cmd-T problem
even on Leopard (10.5.3). So maybe my built on Leopard is somehow broken...
I'll do clean built again later.

@pl: which environment do you use for your non product build?

I found that linking way of OpenOffice.org.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice.bin on
Leopard is culprit. If I link desktop/unxmacxi.pro/bin/soffice with -isysroot
/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk -mmacosx-version-min=10.4 on Leopard, Cmd-T
with aquavcl08 code won't cause the problem. Without that flags, Cmd-T key
event for superclass of NSApp will loop. @pl: Should I open a new issue about
this?

Anyway, let's go back to the issue about key conflict of Non-breaking space, and
solve this for OOo 3.0. It is really important for users with multiple scripts
on Mac OS X.

@pl: Thanks for committing the patch. It indeed works well with Tiger, however,
I've just found that the patch is not good for Leopard. Since it seems the
event handling about NSApp super class differs between Tiger and Leopard,
hotkeys like Cmd-T (i.e. non effective key) on Leopard cause infinite loop and
then crash. I'm not sure about the reason of this difference though...

For Leopard, changes in my comment on May 15 actually works both with keys like
Cmd-B (non key equivalent hotkeys) and Cmd-Space (Input Menu hotkey). This is
why I put my comment on May 15, and then changed on May 31. I've played with
Leopard on May 15 and with Tiger on May 31...

So I think we should find a way that works both on Tiger and Leopard.

[sw-issues] [Issue 89954] Move ExtLeading below the text line for all platforms

@fme: Regarding the other platforms: I think placing ExtLeading below the text
line should fix problems with documents using multiple fonts.

Attached figure shows English (using Century) and Japanese (using MS Mincho)
mixed document. In OOo 3.0 beta for Windows (left figure), Japanese text seems
to be placed relatively downward compared with English text. In contrast, MS
Word for Mac (right figure), Word Viewer on Windows, and OOo 3.0 Mac
(aquavcl08+hb09) looks same text placements.

I also think OOo3 would be a good opportunity do this as hdu noted.

That patch does not work better. The problem is that Cmd-Space indeed
IS a menu key equivalent, so the menu still executes it before the input
method. This is the clash I'm referring to.

OK. What I wanted to note is that current code wouldn't emit (Apple's
input method switching) Input Menu keyevent even the Cmd-Space conflict
was resolved.

What the patch does achieve however is that the command bound hotkeys
that are not in the menu (e.g. Cmd-B for bold) don't work anymore.

Aha, that was my fault. Now I understand that the hot keys with Cmd not
in the menus should be handled with keyDown() in salframeview.mm. I think
the solution to emit Input Menu keyevent to switch input methods is to
call super when all OOo's hotkeys is not handled in noop() from
interpretKeyEvents(). Attached patch should do this and seems to fix
the problem when Cmd-Space conflict is removed by customize. @pl: Could you
review this change?

With fixing issue #89545 in cws_aquavcl08, now fonts on Mac OS X become rendered
with proper ascent and descent, which fixes UI text rendering at the right
positioning.

However, as its leading is now assigned as mnExtLeading instead of addition for
mnDescent, sw documents show these ExtLeading above the text lines. But typical
Mac OS X application put these leadings below the text lines, the layout of
document made by sw looks different compared with Apple's Pages application. So
I'd suggest moving these ExtLeading below the text line for Aqua with changes
below.

What do you think of this change below?

After some trial of editing documents and spreadsheets with your change last
weekend, I become think of the change is working fine. Adding mnExtLeading
seems good compromise in regard of adding appropriate line spaces in the
documents with Hiragino fonts. It would be great if you commit your change for
3.0.

Also it would be fine if the UI dialog had additional one pixel or so around the
text as I noted in the last comment. But this maybe another problem to address.
 Thanks.

Some fonts on Mac OS X are rendered with large descent size, and it causes these
fonts aligned upward. For example Poplar Std, ROSEWOOD STD REGULAR in the
attached figures (fontmenu-non-patched.png and fontmenu-patched.png).

This symptom applies for Hiragino fonts, which is the default UI fonts for ja
version, and this causes text rendered in UI dialog a bit funny
(ja-ui-non-patched.png and ja-ui-patched.png).

@hdu: Is there any particular reason that aMetrics.leading is currently added
for pMetric-mnDescent? The figures with patched one are created with following
diff.

I found that vcl/aqua/source/gdi/salgdi.cxx revision 1.66.6.4 changed the
behavior. This revision disabled CJK heuristics, and you seemed to added
aMetrics.leading to mnDescent to get adequate line height. However, adding
leading to mnDescent doesn't seem to be a good idea for fonts like Hiragino.

So, how about adding half of aMetrics.leading to mnAscent and rest half to
mnDescent like this?

In issue #85925, some of the gothic fonts (Japanese Sans like fonts) are wrongly
replaced with mincho fonts (Japanese Serif like fonts). Attached patch fixes
the problem and added some missing Hiragino substitute too.

This should fix the problem of wrongly using Hiragino Mincho as a UI fonts in
ja version. For applications using Japanese UI text, it should use gothic
fonts.

Could you review the attached patch?

I'm not sure whether we need to add mnExtLeading. Personally, mnExtLeading = 0
is fine for me even with Hiragino fonts.

The problem I can think of using mnAscent and mnDescent with the value

pMetric-mnAscent = static_castlong(+aMetrics.ascent  * fPixelSize + 0.5);
pMetric-mnDescent = static_castlong(-aMetrics.descent * fPixelSize +
0.5);

for Hiragino fonts is that the messages in dialogs looks a little bit condensed
for ja version (see attached option-dialog-ja.png; it uses Hiragino Kaku
Gothic).

Since issue #88200 and others have changed the key event handling in
vclnsapp.mm, input menu key bindings like Cmd-Space to switch input methods
doesn't work with DEV300m12.

Even I don't really follow the recent changes in key event handling, I wonder
whether calling performKeyEquivalent or keyDown, and then return in sendEvent()
really needed. Even if I changed the code like following diff, it seems the
menu key bindings like Cmd-A working. I think the input menu key bindings are
really crucial...

(Redirected from #89502), I think it is not a conflict in key binding with non

Cmd-Space won't work with DEV300_m12. The event is needed to be handled in

Oops, I've accidentally change the Target milestone, sorry.

Aside from the above mentioned event handling for the input menu, non-breaking
space can be input with Option-Space in Mac OS X, so we can disable non-breaking
space with Command-Space safely.

@pl: I'm happy if you consider applying the above patch to handle the event in
super, and disable Command-Space for non-breaking space for Mac OS X by default.

As implemented in Carbon (aquavcl02), it is needed to set the preedit attributes
for Cocoa (aquavcl05). Attached patch fixes the problem.

This is from my last patch which didn't get it done on time for aquavcl04 in
issue #82683.

Even with m243, there still exists one minor problem related to Kotoeri and
delete key.

1) Input a Hiragana with Kotoeri, for example 'あ' with 'A' key, then preedit
text 'あ' with underline attribute is shown on the screen. This is correct
behavior.

2) Press delete key. It should delete the underlined preedit text 'あ', but the
text is not deleted on the screen with m243. This is incorrect behavior, and
causing mismatch between the internal state of Kotoeri and preedit state of OOo.

Attached patch, which set makes mMarkedRange properly, fixes the problem.

I've built aquavcl04 with m239 again in my spare time last weekend, and found
there is still one problem related to Kotoeri and backspace key.

1) input one Hiragana with Kotoeri, for example あ with 'A' key, then text with
underline attribute is shown.
2) press delete key, but the string is not deleted.

I think the attached patch fixes the problem. pl, is it OK to commit on
aquavcl04?

At the moment with your patch if you press Ctrl-shift-j you get into full
screen mode and back again, because the event is dispatched twice - unless
you happen to have the input method which swallows that key event.

Hmm, actually I didn't consider that case. Thanks for the explanation.

Since it simplifies the code, I'd vote to remove the block

I also think it's good idea. But this may cause some key combinations like
Control-q disabled because doCommandBySelector will be not called in such key
combination.

Actually doCommandBySelector only works if there is another clash with a
 system key binding, right ?

Yes, here is an Apple's doc
(http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/InputManager/Concepts/KeyBindings.html).

From this document, it doesn't seem that there is a way to configure the
key-binding from application side.

In which case the OOo binding would be preferred.

Sure.

I couldn't understand way Apple set the return value of interpretKeyEvents
_void_. Anyway we should find a solution about this, however, other
applications like Safari, Camino, iTerm seems to also suffer from this problem.
For example, With AquaSKK, Control-j causes both mode change in Input Method
and application event simultaneously...

I think every key combination for input method should be handled at the first
priority. For example, AquaSKK (http://aquaskk.sourceforge.jp/) input method
uses Control-j to switch input mode, however, current OpenOffice.org Mac will
change justification of text alignment instead of input mode change in AquaSKK.

Following change for salframeview.mm will do that, but as it seems there is no
way to check the key combination for input method is consumed in
NSTextInputMethod, the key combination like C-j with AquaSKK will be handled
twice (input mode change and then text alignment of OOO). @pl:, what do you
think?

By fixing issue #78983, Geeza Pro is set as a theme font for
GetSystemFontSetting() in salframe.cxx when UI locale is Arabic. However,
actual UI font used for Arabic OOo package becomes Tahoma.

I guess VCL.xcu is related, but I'm not sure why fonts in VCL.xcu is used in
Arabic case. With en and ja build, Lucida Grande and Hiragino are used as
UI fonts as expected from GetSystemFontSetting().

The difference is caused from the fact that substituion glyphs are used on ja
package with English System Language setting (I assume you use a patch in issue
#79676). In this case, glyph size information from theme fonts for Enlighs
locale (maybe Lucida Grande) is used but the displayed font for Japanese text
will be substituted by Hiragino fonts.

I think this problem will be solved in issue #79676. Also issue #78983 is
related to this.

One way to verify the issue, please compare the layout of Tool-Options dialog
(see below and the attached screenshots) with ja package. Hiragino fonts is
automatically used in the dialog with ja locale.

sparcmoz: Could you verify this when you have a free time?

0. Set International-Language to Japanese in System Preferences, and
re-login.

1. Launch m222 ja package (from
http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/SRC680_m222/) and open
Tool-Options. Line space in the dialog is very narrow and some parts of text
and buttons are not shown correctly (m222_ja.png).

2. With aquavcl02, it should have appropriate amount of line spaces
(aquavcl02_ja.png).

mapping table and wrapper for GetThemeFont() is now implemented in aquavcl02
This should fix the problem with ja package with English System language.

The remaining thing will be done in other issues
 * implement proper glyph fallback (issue #79676)
 * improve VCL.xcu related things (for Arabic)

It seems this problem is more difficult than my first thought. There seems some
more related problems. And I noticed my screenshot (arabic.png) was not the
result of the ui locale patch but actually its from my glyph fallback patch in
issue #79676. Sorry for the confusion.

Here is the summary at the moment.

1. GetThemeFont() with smSystemScript might not return appropriate font when Mac
OS X's system language preference doesn't match a language of OOo.

1'. To solve this, I propose using a mapping table between OOo's UI language and
script language of ATS.

2. However, GetThemeFont() with smSystemScript and/or with kFontArabicScript
never returns Arabic font name. It always returns Lucida Grande, which don't
contain Arabic glyphs. So 1' doesn't work for all languages.

2'. It may be solved with wrapping GetThemeFont() and return appropriate system
font like Geeza Pro for Arabic script.

3. But for Arabic case, since UI_SANS for ar locale seems to be assigned as
Tahoma; Traditional Arabic;... in VCL.xcu, Geeze Pro won't be used even
patch 2' is applied. In this case, Tahoma is used and it shows squares because
it doesn't contain Arabic glyphs.

3'. Adding Geeze Pro before Tahoma in VCL.xcu will force to use the Arabic
fonts. However, since it doesn't contain Latin glyphs, some UI strings written
in English becomes squares... So it requires a glyph fallback as in issue
#79676.

So we need,
 1) improve Aqua specific default UI font selection mechanism for every locales
 2) implement proper glyph fallback mechanism (issue #79676)

@ hdu: Could I ask one question? Related problem 3. I couldn't understand why
Tahoma is used even I modified the code around GetThemeFonts() force to use
Geeza Pro for Arabic script? On Japansese OOo package, the font selected by
GetThemeFonts() is always used instead of fonts listed in VCL.xcu. Which code
should I look into knowing about VCL.xcu font replacement?

I think it can be solved with the way mentioned in the issue 78983. And it
seems using smSystemScript in GetThemeFont() has two disadvantage.

One is that it only usable when Mac OS X's language setting matches with the
language of OOo Aqua's package (e.g. Japanese OOo package shows only square
glyphs for Japanese UI text when launched with English
International-Languages setting of Mac OS X's System Preferences). The other
is GetThemeFont() with smSystemScript doesn't support a few (or some?) languages
as discovered in this issue (e.g. Arabic).

If I modify to use kFontArabicScript explicitly for GetThemeFont() in OOo Aqua
Arabic package, it can display its UI text (see attached test patch and
screenshot). I think implementing a conversion table between UI locale and
ATSUI font scripts helps to solve these two problems. But as hdu mentioned in
issue 78983, synchronization with changing OOo's language setting may be further
needed.

@ tl: I noticed one minor glitch in my patch. It solved the problem with
generic unix vcl module as you've verified, but it won't fix for GTK vcl plugin.

I should have written

'if ( nAttr EXTTEXTINPUT_ATTR_HIGHLIGHT )'

instead of

'if ( nAttr == EXTTEXTINPUT_ATTR_HIGHLIGHT )'

in the patch.

'' is needed since in GTK vcl module, the reversed text attribute of input
method is converted to SAL_EXTTEXTINPUT_ATTR_HIGHLIGHT |
SAL_EXTTEXTINPUT_CURSOR_INVISIBLE.

So, could use commit the change again? I'm really sorry to bother you again.

Thanks,

And doesn't happen with these fonts.

On the other hand most of the CJK fonts from other platforms (e.g.
 Sazanami),
from the MacTestDrive apps and many other sources do only contain a
Mac-Encoding (Roman), which wouldn't trigger the new heuristic.

Right. New one is intended to check older Mac platform fonts only. As you can
see in the patch, it is assumed to be used with the OS/2 check. i.e. a check
for cmap encoding is only performed even when OS/2 check cannot determine the
CJK information.

It may be too expensive to check every cmap subtable header (also I forgot to
add 'break' when mbHasCJKSupport is detected in the loop of subtable check). So
I've modified the patch to use mbHasOs2Table member and do Mac CMAP encoding
check only for fonts without OS/2 table. In this way, most fonts can be
determined with OS/2 unicode range check only, and the rest can be checked with
Mac-Encoding trick I think.

Since the font is already selected when we need this info it is not too
expensive to get the whole CMAP and check for a few typical unicodes.
 Which unicodes would be best?

Sorry, I couldn't follow your meaning. Could you elabolate more please?

[sc-issues] [Issue 69346] Highlighted preedit text o n white background while editing

@ tl: It depends on the input method wether the preedit text has reverse (or
highlight) attributes. On Linux (or Unix), most input methods set the reverse
or highlight attribute for the preedit text. But on Window, default setting of
IME puts only underline attribute, so the problem doesn't become evident.

Maybe you can try this with Linux (GNOME) on Calc and/or Impress.

sparcmoz: Thanks for your report. I can confirm this issue. I think this may
be related to kerning of Hiragino Gothic/Mincho fonts, and it is not totally
related to the glyph fallback. Please file a new issue.

Currently, glyphs not displayed with selected fonts are displayed with white
box. Here is the patch to use font fallback object with
kATSUDefaultFontFallbacks search methods.

[porting-issues] [Issue 78818] Japanese input: font rever ts to Tahoma

sparcmoz: Do you setup Basic Fonts (Asian) preference of Writer to use
Hiragino fonts? With the setting, I don't see the font reversion with Japanese
input. But YMMV.

Anyway, on issue #79676 I've submitted a patch to enable fallback fonts if the
glyph is not supported with a selected font. With the patch, I think Japanese
text should be displayed correctly even the selected font is Tahoma.

After some tests, sometimes the patch doesn't work at all... I'll investigate
later.
