[lingucomponent-issues] [Issue 79498] No support for ligatures i n spellcheck

but what is the real benefit for OOo? I think nobody will enter ligatures
manually into a text processor. Maybe a handful of people will do that but
probably only for headlines not for every word in running text.

So doesn't it make more sense to make ligatures a display-only thing (#4638) in
OOo and internally keep the text literally letter-by-letter which would also not
affect spell checking?

it's kind of pointless just to say let's wait for what API for grammar checking
will give to solve this issue. No API is able to implement a crital ball. You
need crital ball if you want to distinguish between serious und fun use of
dashes.

- this issue is now two years old
- it's on hold because we wait for a feature that won't come (the critall ball
inside the grammar API)
- there has been a sulution been done by Karl (thanks again!)
  - which was discard in favour of grammatically incorrect fun word constructs
  - at the cost of grammatically correct dash handling

Please do not retarget this issue again and again. If you do not want to give up
allowing-to-build-silly-fun-contructs then say this clear, that will definitely
mean you will have to close this whole issue as WONTFIX.

the OS X spellchecker has its own disadvantages, but the problem with ispell is
windows, sure. There are people who hacked ispell to compile on windows but you
want more reliable things than this as prereqs for a OOo compile I think.
igerman98 also requires GNU make.
One can keep standing on the pragmatic point that you want everything that can
be build from source _must_ be build from source in the OOo build. From from my
point of view however this is overpragmatic and too unrealisic in _this_ case.

rene: why you want to build require ispell on platforms where ispell isn't
supposed to work on at all? I would suggest to just keep using the binary
package for making build requirements of OOo not too difficult. I already told
you that in PM ...
And what problem do you see with BSD find?

not quite exactly what I thought: I thought of adding a case sensitive spell
check mode which can be used by the grammar checker.

The grammer checker should be the (only) one who gets words/sentences/sections
from OOo and the grammar checker is the only one who should call the spell
checker. At that point a case sensitive/insensitive switch in hunspell would be
required.

I also know that this way to go is utopistic as long as no grammar checker API
is being created...

Thanks for the report. Laci, can you confirm that the REP rules are also case
sensitive intentionally? Then I would add additional REP rules for all cases
where the replacements would also be required for upper case combinations.

In most language non-capital words are only written Capitalized at the
beginning of a sentence (after a . or at the beginning of a section). Within a
sentence those Words would be a typos. So to find mistakes like that,
OpenOffice could do case sensitive spellchecker lookups for words that are not
at the beginning of sentences.

Laci, I think Hunspell can't do case sensitive spell checkings like this.
However I think this is a required feature for a future grammer checker anyway.
Do you think it makes sense to extend Hunspell this way?

The next question would be if OpenOffice should be enabled to do case sensitive
spell checker lookups itself or if this should be one of the very first basic
tests of a grammer checker layer (which in turn should then be calling the spell
checker)

flections of words cannot be looked up with the thesauri. For example looking up
a synonym for cars is unsuccessful. As far as I know there is currently no way
to handle something like this. What would be needed is something like ispell's
feature to show the root word of which affix rules created flections from:

# echo cars | ispell
@(#) International Ispell Version 3.2.06 08/01/01
word: ok (derives from root CAR)

I think hunspell can do this with with hunmorph, too.

Then thesaurus synonym entries could be enhanced by additional information for
flections of each synonym. In the easiest case the flections could be added
manually one by one. The more elaborated way to go would be supporting affix
rules using hunspell/hunmorph.

this special cases of compound words of ordinal+superlative are hard to put
into a compound *rule* and on the other hand the number of this kind of
compound constructs is very high but while most of the possible compounds are
rarely used. As long as I don't see reasonable rule to support this class of
compounds, I think it's best to add the most common ones that are not already
known manually.
Laci, you can assign this to me if you want...

khong: no, for German it's *good* to have it enabled (I filed this bug to get
this feature for the next dictionary version).

er: what other spell checker implementations do you mean? The spell checker from
StarOffice? At least for German language there is no other spellcheker
implementation except hunspell, is it? What's the problem you see?

milek_pl: Arbeits-Amt ist correct too. Some possible correct forms are:

Arbeits-
Arbeits-Amt
Arbeitsamt
-amt

Incorrect are:

arbeits-
-arbeits
Arbeits-amt
Arbeits

To test this take the (still inofficial) dict files from
http://j3e.de/hunspell_test/. For a cleaned up final next release from OOo
inclusion I hoped to get a Hunspell homonym bug resolved first but maybe I make
a new release without that fix.

what is the status of this issue? Is there any one feeling responsible or it? As
this affects spellchecker quality quite a lot this is a very user visible thing
which should be solved.

Is your proposal to wait and see what the grammer checker API brings?

It would be sufficient to say that dash is being forwarded to the spell checker
if there is space-dash or dash-space or dash-comma etc. is found. You can stay
with being dash a word separator if wordchar-dash-wordchar is found.

the next version of the German hunspell dictionary will have more correct
(de-)compound word support. Words like Areits are incorrect while Arbeits-
is correct for example. This works with Hunspell but not with
OpenOffice+Hunspell as OOo does not forward dashes to the spellchecker. For more
elaborated compound word support I need this feature.
(If enabling of forwarding of dashes to the spellchecker is problematic for some
languages it might be an option to make such things language specific...)

if the document's language i set to de_AT the sentence Das Kücken ist zuhaus
should be correct with de_DE Kücken and zuhaus must be typos.

Regarding the hyphenation files: de_AT can use the de_DE hyphenation files -
they are *equal*. I don't think there are real de_CH hyphenation patterns -
there are no de_CH TeX hyphenation patterns and probably also no de_CH OOo
hyphenation patterns. One can use the de_DE hyphenation patterns (that's what
everyone did over the years) but as the Swiss don't use ß (sz ligature) but ss
instead, the hyphenation patterns are probably incorrect for some words where ß
is replaced with ss in Swiss. The problem is that the wordlist once used for
creating the German hyphenation pattern is vanished - otherwise recalculating
more precise Swiss patterns would be no propblem.

There's a file Copyright saying everything about the dual-licensing. If the
readme which tells about the origining dictionary package, which is in deed GPL
is confusing this can be made mode clear or the README*txt files might be
dropped. All in all I don't see a problem here.

I can just recommend to deliver http://j3e.de/hunspell/de_DE.zip and
http://j3e.de/hunspell/de_CH.zip with OpenOffice - the extra license was
explicitly created for OOo to make the painful extra installing of dictionaries
obsolete. The quality of this new hunspell-based dictionaries is also greatly
improved from the previous myspell-based version.
Someone of the developers might please want to check this in. Thanks!

this is a showstopper for most real professional office users. This is no
problem for most home users, right. The loss of functionality for serail letters
(which is a major task in professional offices) is huge. It's a petty to see
this regession bug being retargetted again and again. All one can do is
reccomend professional office users with a need for serial letter functionality
to use OOo 1.1.x (or a different Office Suite)

a few things to correct:

- there are hyphenation patterns for old orthography. I converted the old LaTeX
patterns some time ago, they are here: http://j3e.de/myspell/

- in Swiss German old/new orthography are not so different as in non-Swiss
German but yes - it's also different ;-) As I made a old-orthography de_DE
dictionary, it would be easy to make a Swiss old orthography de_CH dictionary,
too.

- as tl says, there is a simple way to check the state of the old orthography
checkbox. Laci - do you think it's possible for you to check that flag in
hunspell and use the defined dictionary + _old (e.g. de_DE_old.{aff,dic} instead
of de_DE in that case?

the dictionary.lst file should be more specific about the
spell/thesaurus/hyphenation engines. At the moment you can define

DICT lang REGION dictionarybasename
HYPH lang REGION hyphpatternbasename
THES lang REGION tesaurusbasename

We now have already two spellcheck engines and some people may have reasons to
use both from time to time. However you can't define in dictionary.lst which
dictionarybasename is for myspell and which is for hunspell. There may also come
up other spellcheck engines which will have the same prolbem or where the
problem might be worse because other spellcheck engines might not be compatible
with the myspell dictionary format.

There might also come up alternative thesaurus engines and alternative
hyphenation engines - they will all have the same problem that dictionary.lst
does not jet make a difference between the dictionary names for different
engines.

I want to propose to leave DICT for myspell dictionaries but to introduce
names like DICT_HUNSPELL for hunspell and so on for other spellcheck engines.
Hunspell might itself do a fallback to DICT if it doesn't find a
DICT_HUNSPELL (because hunspell is backward compatible with myspell and can
use its dictinoaries, too).

The same naming scheme should be used for HYPH and THES entries to make sure
future alternative versions don't clash with existing versions. This will also
make handling of installing dictionaries for DictOOO easier and saver.

do you know that hunspell (which is planed to be the successor of myspell in OOo
2.0.2 IIRC) does have a NOSUGGEST flag? This is very nice for dictionaries which
don't want to censor out vulgar words but which also don't want to present such
words as suggestions.

for testing purposes I did some cutpaste from firefox into OOo 2.0 (a SuSE
build, based on src680-m137) and after some time OOo just froze.

I tried to reproduce the cutspastes I did and saw that one pasted web page
caused the freeze. Saving in swx workes and to it's easy here to reproduce. I
attach the swx file. If you open it and save it as odt OOo will crash. I hope
you can reproduce it ...

When printing a serial letter via file - print it always print to the default
printer and no loner asks for which printer to use. OOo 1.1.x did this right.
Just tested on Linux.

Sorry, the only double-click which should of course have an effect is a
double-klick in the synonym list, like it is now, so that surfing through
synonym groups is possible. But also here is the bug with the ) at the
beginning put in the replace box.

if you double-click on a meaning or on a synonym the trailing ) of the
meanings type is also taken into the replace textbox.

Example:

1. enter the word car in writer, look up a synonym for this word.
2. in the theasurus popup double-clicking on (noun) railcar will result
in ) railcar being put into the replace text-box.

That is a bug IMHO as a meaning must not neccessarily be a valid replacement,
just words which are clicked in the synonym-list may be taken as replacements.

3. double-click a word in synonym list, for example Wheeled vehicle will also
result in ) Wheeled vehicle being put in the replace text box.

All in all I suggest:
- double-clicking in the thesaurus should have the same effect as a single
click.
- clicking in the meaning list should not result in changes of the
replacement text box

(tested with OO.o 1.9.92, Linux)

When OOo is running in UTF-8 locale like on most modern Linux systems and a file
containing an 8-bit non-UTF-8 character ist being opened, OOo just says that the
file does not exist. Instead it should open that file reguardless if the
filename is validly encoded in the current locale's charmap. You might for
example use hex %F6 for German in iso8859-1 like webbrowsers use to display
non-ASCII URLs. Many people have problems opening files which just are not UTF-8
and don't know what to do.
