Why does this seemingly simple issue getting pushed forward year after year?

It is about clarity, correctness, and elegance in language, thus pretty
important as to user experience.
Is a dialog text really that hard to edit?

It has now passed two and a half year!!

Anyway, I think it would be good if more swedish speaking people give their
view anyway as by principle it is not nice to change by one persons ideas.
Could this be pushed to be rewiewed by swedish translators maybe?

Thank you for commenting.
I was beginning to think nobody use OOo draw...
Yes it is annoying OOo does this in another way than any other tool i have seen.

( paranthesis About your other issue:
As for learning how to do things, please first ask on user forum, and if a
feature do not exist then file a request in a aseparate issue here.

In OOo Draw you can copy while dragging an object by the Ctrl key, then click
and drag. First enable this feature by setting a mark in right place in Tools-
Alternatives-OpenOffice.org Draw.
/parantesis )

As for the subdivisions, it would be nice if there eventually would be a
dicision about if OOo will continue to do this in a different way than any
other program, or it will be fixed to work the logical way.
Soon 3 years have passed and it is still registered as enhancement without
target version.

Hi Ian
Not Wherever! avstånd (=distance) occours several places where it should
not be changed. For example avstånd is used for distance between columns of
text, and between paragraphs, which are perfectly correct use.

Lets keep it at least in this issue to the dialog for the dimensions of labels
where i see the english word pitch used, and that should not be translated to
avstånd.

The first two locations in english version (OOo 2.0.2 final en-GB) is
File-New-Labels, In the dialog that pops up, select tab Format.
It is the two topmost variables:
Horizontal pitch
Vertical pitch

In thoose two instances pitch should have been translated to delningsmått.

Today it is translated like
Horis. avstånd
Vert. avstånd
And as I said it gets interpreted as *spacing between* labels, but it is
between
each start of label. Therefor I suggest:
Horis. delningsmått
Vert. delningsmått

That text might be too long to fit in the dialog, and it is perfectly OK to use
Horis. delning
Vert. delning
Technically it is even better, but nontechincal person might not be used to see
delning. Either way, much better than avstånd as that is plain wrong.

The second two locations in english version (OOo 2.0.2 final en-GB) is
File-New-Business Cards, In the dialog that pops up, select tab Format.
It is the two topmost variables, exactly the same problem and remedy as above
applies.
Maybe it is even the same text strings programatically.

Total: 4 locations (including maybe two duplicates)

I have not find this problem other places, and looking for pitch in english
help only finds theese locations.

So, now we go to the help: Being in this Format tab, pressing Help button in
swedish version gives:

_Horis. avstånd_

Actually theese are perfect explanations of delning or delningsmått for
somebody not knowing theese words (maybe not born swedish), and so are great in
the help :). So I suggest only changing the headings of theese two paragraphs
acording to the changes in the dialog:
Horis. delning
Vert. delning

Or, if the clumsier form is used:
Horis. delningsmått
Vert. delningsmått

It feels wrong that I am the only swedish speaking person on this issue.
Where are the original translators?

I seem to have found:

1) Installing on cleaned system work OK, even for nonstandard partitioning on
MSWin2k.

2) OOo uninstallers seem not to uninstall some parts in registry that i would
think should be uninstalled, plus the startup link.

3) Installing on non OOo-cleaned system seem to have the issues bencoman
reported; if I remember what i have done correclty i had the same problem, but
I
am out of spare time to mess up the system that much again now...

- Details: -

Like bencoman i use several partitions. System reside on L:\ , programs on F:\
user files, temporary files, backups etc on other partitions... (That made
reinstall much easier - Win2k too often made spaghetti of my system before SP3)

OS: Win2k-SP4, originally english, but some patches are swedish.
the system have never seen any MSoffice part, but Staroffice 6 and lot of OOo
versions from pre OOo1 to now OOo2RC3.

I decided to steal time to test this issue, only finding out *no* user have
correct linking of MSO files anymore!?! (.ppt not known to system, .xls
erroneously pointing to an uninstalled now nonexistant location of OOo, .doc to
wordpad) That is weird as i for obvious reason always (unless i forgot this
time) select OOo to open MSO formats. Maybe i forgot.

Maybe it was caused by me uninstalling OOo1.4 - I do not remember wether I
uninstalled it before or after OOo2RC, and maybe it was OOo1.4 that opened MSO
formats, but then I also have forgotten to check thoose boxed for all OOo2
betas, and that is not very plausible - i am almost certsin i have read MSO
formats on OOo2 beta. And i did uninstall OOo2 beta before installing RC)

The only office application on the system now is OOo2RC3 swedish.

So i run the OOo2 installer selecting repair: no change. Run it again (under
adminiistrator privilegies of course) selecting change (or what was the word),
and checked the MSO formats, and then MSO formats works correct for admin, but
not for any other user, not even new ones, standard or restricted.

Frankly I do not know how it is supposed to work: maybe ol users are meant not
to be affected, but I think new users shuld get the MSO files link like last
time an administrator have set it? No?

Getting annoyed I:

1) uninstalled OOo2
1b)rebooted

2) deleted any Openoffice folder and file I could find left in program folder,
and user settings

3) in registry agressively deleted any thing i could think of: containing OOo,
openo, soffice, stardiv, application/vnd.sun.
3b) rebooted

I also realised that the uninstaller forgot to remove the startup link to the
quickstarter. (maybe because it is generated by the program, not installer?) At
least for the other administrator priviligied user. Seem like a bug.

The uninstallers also seem to have left keys from all Openoffice versions in at
least two places, one is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\OpenWithList\ , the other i
forgot. Seem like another bug.

4) Installed OOo2svRC3, to F:\OOo2\, selecting all MSO formats. Ran DictOOo
from menu to get swedish dictionary.

5) Everything OK from other users, both MSO links and dictionary

6) Also all OK for new users created.

(One last note that might be related: i have earlier experienced problems
between antivirus software and programs, including installers, therefore I
nowadays shut of antivirus during install/uninstall after having it checked the
install archive.)

Swedish version usually is released together with some other languages a couple
workdays after them main english build.

As I write this, the 2.0 final main is released since about a day, but not
swedish.

The download page now serves the Swedish RC3 which is the best file choice it
can do, however the text get a bit misleading as http://download.openoffice.org/
2.0.0/sv.html header say OpenOffice.org 2.0 Download Sites - Swedish, but is
linking to RC3 files. Also the release notes link are for RC3. I have not
myself found what has changed from RC3.

But the user can get to the latest swedish build now :)

But to be fair it should inform that it serves RC3 as final is not translated
yet! (all people do not know what RC3 in the end of the long file namne means)

But this will be all OK in a workday or two when the final is translated.

I do hope this will be better next time OOo comes in new version maybe then
http://sv.openoffice.org is finally online.

Alterantives

Afterthought: realize there are laternatives that are better understood by
commpn people than delning.. Also searching for delning, you also find it
used for splitting and sharing, depending on circumstance.

In technicaland building drawing you often see the short form c-c for center-
to-center distance. In do-it-yourself manuals c-c avstånd (c-c distance) or
c-c mått (c-c measure) I think this is used this way in several languages.

Centrumavstånd is a more common and less ambigous form better suitable for
flowing text. In plain english this mean center distance.

So i think Centrumavstånd is the best suited word.

Yet another alternative: delningsmått: less usual, but might be better than
any word containing center, as the dynamic illustration in the dialog
illustrates the measure not from center, but from leading edges.

(Speaking about center to center distance might confuse some people not
realizing that is the same as leading to leading edge distance when all labels
are equal as they always are here.)

At the moment i write this this is my favourite, but please discuss.

At this moment i write this coment, RC3 is released, and i am downloading RC3
swedish via torrent. (I have learnt to get the URLs from http://borft.student.
utwente.nl:6969/)

But a user using the Download page and select swedish is directed to

http://oootranslation.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/2.0.0rc3/

which currently give a 404!
And i guess that when that folder is in place it does contaion language files,
not installation files, like before.

I agree with hesu2 - in my opinion too it really should read versaler.

I have had discussions over this earlier. The usage of stora bokstäver comes
from the idea the word versal is hard to learn?? (when teaching children?)
So
instead some people use the ambigous form stora bokstäver. But not only is
it
ambigous, it is outright wrong as it really means big (size) characters, so it
is often misunderstood. (for example (mixing english and swedish here: make
that heading using stora bokstäver could mean two different things!

  Using singular forms:
versal = upper case character.
Opposite= gemen = lower case character.

stor = big (size)
Opposite= liten = small (singular) (små in plural and i thought english
was
irregular... ;) )

Using versal/gemen is the correct way for uppercase/lowercase characters.
Impossible to misunderstand. Short and clear. Much shorter to use in dialogs
etc, and no hesitation. If someone does not use that word it is easy to search
in any wordbook (or internet). Also, a strong point: even thoose who use the
childish expression when speaking, do in all cases i have met understand the
words gemen and versal when hearing / reading!

Looking in the help file i see OOo use both childish forms and the correct.
Try searching for versal in the help, you find subjects, in one item you read
versal, the other the childish form...

Using versal/gemen generally in the documentation would aid in finding the
correct issue as it would separate between all possible size issues and upper/
lowercase issues.

I would vote for cleaning up the whole OOo to use the professional forms
throughout OOo! Where would we vote / post an issue about that?

In the dialog for the dimensions of labels, the word avstånd is used
throughout where we normally say delning.

avstånd give the false impression the setting is for the space between two
labels. avstånd in this circumstance is read like unused space between
labels (There are probably better english words, bu I am not natively english
speaking)

For clarity delning should be used instead.

Correct naming usage example: vertikalt avstånd = vertikal delning minus
bredd (width)

(This also applies for that help section. I have not checked other parts.)

(I set lowest priority as it is quick for the user to test out how it works,
but
not naming it clearly lowers the impression of the software quality.)

It have during the last week(s?) been difficult to find the swedish install
versions, although they do have been readily built. ( I got them through the
torrent tracker page, and danis mirror (but not available on swedish mirror
when
i tried!) This have also been noted on users and discuss mail lists.

Going to 2.0 download page

http://download.services.openoffice.org/2.0.0rc/index.html

during the latest week(s?) and selecting swedish language directly results in

http://download.services.openoffice.org/2.0.0rc/contribute.html?continue=http%
3A//oootranslation.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/2.0.0rc2/

Clicking the Download button there results in a file list

http://oootranslation.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/2.0.0rc2/

First, this is not a nice way to present the file to download to a normal
computer user.

But most importantly, * no install file is there * !!

This is instead a list of all *language packs*...
(During RC1 only linux language files, currently RC2 Linux and MSWin)
