With embedded bitmap graphics, one can right-click on the bitmap and select
"Save
Graphics..." in order to export/save this embedded graphic object to a separate
file.

Such possibility should exist for all embedded graphic objects, be it bitmap or
vector, so
one should also have an option to click on an embedded SVG, select "Save
Graphics..." and
save that SVG drawing to a .svg file on disk.

micool, it would still be very useful to be able to export OpenOffice Draw
graphics to SVG.

Unless you are able to quickly recreate any complex drawing that was made in
OpenOffice in Inkscape whenever you need it in SVG format.

I'd like \r and \n , too (like glebovitz has suggested)!

It's currently a bit silly that OpenOffice lets to substitite line breaks with
paragraph breaks, but not vice versa. And it's silly that one does that by
substituting \n with \n.

The current behaviour is counter-intuitive, one would expect that substituting
\n iwth \n wll result in no change.

Cheyrich, it would be nice to have \r and \n, so we can change line breaks to
paragraph breaks (\r -> \n) and paragraph breaks to line breaks (\n -> \r).

What do You think about it?

In OO 2.0 it's much better - I can select the text and choose "Format/Default
Formatting" to get rid of pre-existing links.

BTW, the suggestion about turning off the URL recognition is useful, but a bit
off-topic. It won't help if a user wants to remove an existing hyperlink.

In OO 1.1 it's extremely frustrating - the conversion from ordinary text to URL
is irreversible, one can only select the URL, call the URL edit dialog box, copy
the text, close the dialog, paste somewhere near, then delete the URL

However, the current "Default Formatting" is not intuitive for some users, too.

Many users expect to simply right-click on the URL, and find the "Remove
hyperlink" command there (or maybe "convert hyperlink to text"?).

This has been tested with OpenOffice versions: 1.1.4 and 1.97.87 (680m87
snapshot build) on Mandrake Linux 10.2 (development version - "cooker") and
Fedora Core 3 Linux.

Builtin PDF export in OpenOffice fails to subset Type1 fonts (but succeeds with
TrueType), and instead embeds full fonts in PDF files.

With some Unicode fonts, which contain lots of glyphs for various alphabets (e.g
Nimbus Sans L, Nimbus Roman No9 L), this inflates the size of resulting PDF
files up to hundreds of KB, even for small text-only documents!

I've gathered some testcases here:
http://olo.ab.altkom.pl/domowa/qa/openoffice/huge_pdfs/

And the whole issue has been recently discussed by many users on OOOforum:
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=16029

Contrary to what has been said in issue 20370, Type 1 fonts are definitely
subsettable - e.g. Ghostscript subsets both TrueType and type 1 when generating
PDFs, and you can see an example of a PDF with subsetted Type 1 and TrueType
fonts here (Ghostscript was the generator):

http://olo.ab.altkom.pl/domowa/qa/openoffice/huge_pdfs/Cwiczenie3_ghostscript.pdf

http://olo.ab.altkom.pl/domowa/qa/openoffice/huge_pdfs/oo_1.1.4_mdk10.2_extendedPDF_using_GhostScript.pdf

A workaround is to print to PostScript and use a converter (e.g. ps2pdf) to
generate PDF files. There is an excellent OpenOffice macro library that adds a
GUI for this operation: it's called extendedPDF, available here:
http://www.jdisoftware.co.uk/pages/epdf-home.php

However, having OpenOffice generate nice PDFs natively would be certainly much
better. Even setting up extendedPDF requires some plumbing experience and is
definitely not for majority of users...

[gsl-issues] [Issue 44774] don't mark Type1 and OT CFF fonts as subsettable or embeddable unless they are subsettable or embeddable.

An installation of OpenOffice 1.1.4 on Mandrake Linux doesn't use subsetting for
Type 1 fonts when exporting to PDF. Is that problem related to this bug?

Embedding full, not subsetted Type 1 fonts results in abnormally huge PDF files
(e.g. 700 KB for a short text-only document) on Linux.

There's a discussion on this issue on OpenOffice forum at
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=16029

[marketing-issues] [Issue 11118] Viewer

Since some folks still argument that a viewer is not needed, here are collected
arguments that support the need:

* The full OpenOffice is 70MB and downloading it just to view an SXW is not an
option for dial-up users

* When you are in an Internet cafe, you probably don't have the rights to
install software. You could, however, download and run the viewer if it was just
a simple ready-to execute single binary (e.g. ooviewer.exe for Win32)

* Distributing PDFs/Flash intead of SXWs/SXCs is not always an option, since:
1) PDFs are always way bigger than corresponding SXWs/SXCs because of
embedded fonts, weaker image compression etc.
2) What if the person viewing the document decides she/he wants to make some
corrections and send it back? With SXW/SXC there's always an option of getting
OpenOffice and editing the document easily.
PDF's are mostly read-only, since they are actually ready-to-print, compiled
documents with absolute positioning and without information about text flow etc.
You can only annotate PDFs with some tools, but not edit them or retrieve the
source document with all formatting etc.

There SHOULD be lightweight viewers for .SXW, .SXC, possibly .SXD and .SXI.
The OpenOffice project would be the best place to collect such subprojects,
instead of relying on others to implement these.

I vote for reopening this bug, possibly setting the target to a distant future.
