No idea why this was closed as invalid. It still affects the latest version. I
don't
care any more personally as I now use Serif™ PagePlus X5, which supports
OpenType fonts.

I think it is obvious that since the footnote is set to do not split, and it
won't all
fit on the previous page, then it should be moved to the next page — together
with its anchor.

Who cares what Word does? They do not set the standards for all other
applications.

I just checked what PagePlus X5 does — it follows the second method — it
ignores the keep text together attribute and W/O protection, keeping one line
of two on the same page as the footnote anchor, and moves the other line of
the footnote to the next page (text frame).

If there are three lines in the footnote, it keeps two on the same page as the
anchor and moves one, or keeps one and moves two.

This is a better solution IMO, as it avoids the large white space problem.

[framework-issues] [Issue 101762] Incorrect Capitalisation of German Sharp S (add U+1E9E as ß for Find a nd Replace/and Upper to Lowercase)

There is no need to make insulting remarks.

Converting German uppercase SS to lowercase ss is plainly wrong, it should be
converted back to lowercase German ß from whence it came.

The method that OpenOffice uses when a font lacks the right glyphs is glyph
fallback. So perhaps it can encode capitalised ß as 1E9E but use SS from the
current font as a glyph fallback if 1E9E doesn't exist in the current font. On
converting 1E9E to lowercase, it would rightly switch to ß.

The Unicode Standard 5.1 now supports Capital German Sharp S at codepoint 1E9E
(hex) 7838 (decimal).

The current version 3.1 final capitalises ß (00DF hex) to SS and, of course,
lowercase then converts back to ss, which is plainly wrong.

UnicodeData.txt for version 5.1 contains this pair of glyph definitions:

00DF;LATIN SMALL LETTER SHARP S;Ll;0;L;N;;German;;;
1E9E;LATIN CAPITAL LETTER SHARP S;Lu;0;L;N00DF;

Also new in Unicode 5.1 are these three pairs of glyphs in Latin Extended
Additional,
which may as well be fixed by whoever undertakes to fix the current issue:

1EFA;LATIN CAPITAL LETTER MIDDLE-WELSH LL;Lu;0;L;N1EFB;
1EFB;LATIN SMALL LETTER MIDDLE-WELSH LL;Ll;0;L;N;;;1EFA;;1EFA
1EFC;LATIN CAPITAL LETTER MIDDLE-WELSH V;Lu;0;L;N1EFD;
1EFD;LATIN SMALL LETTER MIDDLE-WELSH V;Ll;0;L;N;;;1EFC;;1EFC

This an obvious thing to do when combining text boxes instead of converting
them to
curves. Whether the boxes (2 or more) being combined are overlapping or not,
the
combined text box should be from x,y min to x,y max of the original selected
group.

Should the text be joined with a paragraph break between each text block, or as
a single
text stream? I think the latter may prove more useful.

[sw-issues] [Issue 41118] printing of even and odd p ages (add odd/even to left/right-pages string in UI)

Just a small quibble: odd pages are always on the right, not the left.

The pages options should be on the main dialogue, as should Create single
print jobs
(collate) and Print automatically inserted blank pages.

The term Brochure seems odd to me. The first thing I imagine it to mean is a
trifold
brochure. Unless that is the term used for booklet printing in Word, I think
Booklet is
preferable.

All of the other options belong on other tabs of a tabbed dialogue. One tab for
content
and Notes, and one for Layout (tiled and n-up printing).

In WordPerfect, when you convert text to initial capitals, the first letter of
each word is
capitalized, except for articles, prepositions, conjunctions, and some pronouns.

If you want to specify additional capitalization exceptions, you can edit the
exceptions
file. (Mine contains: and by for in is it its of on the this to with)

Ideally, OpenOffice should implement this in the GUI as it does for
abbreviations and
words with two initial capitals in the AutoCorrect interface.

This issue still affects release 2.4

Optional hyphens should be ignored for indexing purposes, though it would be
useful to
include them in the index so that long words still break in the desired place
in the index.

Non-breaking hyphens and regular hyphens should be treated as the same.

Optionally, hyphenated and unhyphenated terms that are otherwise identical
could be
combined under a single index entry, i.e. for indexing purposes anti-semitism =
antisemitism = Anti-semitism. Whichever spelling was used first would take
precedence
as the index entry.

This issue seems to be fixed in release version 2.4 and Development version 3.0
Beta.

Index marks at the beginning of a word now wrap to the next line and so do not
affect
justification of the previous line.

This is a very old issue. Hasn't this been fixed yet?

Adding just one or two additional shortcut keys is not much use.

[sw-issues] [Issue 47740] annoying toolbars behavior

Even more annoying than not being able to pin this toolbar, is not being able
to turn it off.

You can turn it off.

See http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5t=883

You can also prevent it from changing the window layout by docking it in front
of a
horizontal toolbar, or above a vertical one.

This issue is a non-issue, as there are easy ways to avoid the problems that
context-
sensitive toolbars cause. Having an option to pin them would make the desired
aim
easier to achieve, but it can already be done quite easily.

1. Create a customised toolbar (they are never context-sensitve), and put all
of the
icons that you wish to have available permanently on that.

2. Turn off the context sensitive toolbar(s) by placing the cursor *in
context,* and
turning off the toolbar from the View, Toolbars, menu.

I agree that one way to fix this is to use a modifier key to select the
background image.
A second click will select the text in Serif™ PagePlus, but Control + Click is
almost as
good.

If a graphic is on top of text with wrap through then the graphic should be
selected first,
with a second click selecting the text below.

Note that two separate clicks is different to double-click, but a modifier key
could also be
used. A second click would be more usable as it does not require the use of the
keyboard.

That should have been, “A second click will select the background image”, but

I can confirm the problem on Oo 2.3 with both italics and bold on Windows XP
Home
SP2. It is not document related. It happens on a blank new document.

Quote from the Oo Writer forums:

arjwf said:

Hmmm, a possibly-related problem: sometimes OOO 2.3 won't let you even start
using
bold/italics/underline if that attribute was used at the beginning of the line.
For me, this
reproduces the problem every time:

(1) Start OOO Writer.
(2) Press Control-B (or click the Bold icon) and type foo, then press
Control-B again.
(3) Type bar (a space, then 'bar', then another space)
(4) Press Control-B (or click the Bold icon) and type 'baz'.

Step (4) will NOT turn on bold mode, as it should, and the 'baz' will not
appear in bold.
Oddly, italics and underline work just fine.

Similarly, if you start the line with underline instead of bold, then 'baz'
won't appear in
underline (but bold or italics work fine.)

Anyone frustrated by this issue should use Control Backspace to remove the
paragraph
break. Then the formatting of the previous paragraph is retained.

Although many users may find the current behaviour counter-intuitive, it is
actually useful to many users, and it is not difficult to adjust to unless you
use
Word most of the time and OpenOffice only occasionally. Regular or exclusive
users
of OpenOffice would not regard this as a significant problem at all.

This option should probably be added to Options, OpenOffice.org Writer,
Compatibility.

Please implement paragraph selection as in Wordpad.

Double-click in the margin to select the entire paragraph including the
paragraph
marker. Shift-click to extend the selection. Control click to select all
(entire
document). Single-click to select a line (nearest sentence might be more
useful).

Already familiar to many users, intuitive, and easy to use. (Quadruple click is
difficult and quickly tiring if used repeatedly).

The current behaviour of hanging indents in tables is defective as explained in
Issue 75225. The user should not be able to position the text cursor where the
text
neither displays nor prints, but this can be done by specifying a negative
first
line ident (hanging paragraph).

Rather than fixing this defect, which might be quite difficult, it would be
more
useful not to clip the text and allow the text to print outside the table
borders.

This would be especially useful where borderless tables are used to create
parallel
columns, and would be entirely consistent with the current behaviour of regular
paragraph text or text in sections.

The same behaviour should be allowed with text in Frames.

• Insert a table
• In the first column, format paragraph, first line to a negative value.

Result: You can type text to the left of the table area, but it is truncated
outside of the table border.

Expected: That one cannot set a negative first line indent greater than the
Before
text indent.

Otherwise: The text can print beyond the table bounderies. This might be
useful,
but probably is not the expected behaviour. Though one can do this with regular
paragraph text.

Paragraph Numbering also does not work inside tables — probably for the same
reasons.

All big Word processors behave like this. When table content gets negative
paragraph indent,

How many word-processor did you check? It is not how Wordperfect does it for a
start.

I wonder if MS Word shows the cursor to move to the left of the table and start
typing in a non-printing area like Open Office does? I wonder if it allows you
to enter a negative value greater than the Before Text indent.

Please fix this to work like Word or (better IMO) like Wordperfect.

Reattached the image as PNG instead of Plain text (default)

I think that the WordPerfect behaviour is desirable in Open Office.

Tables are frequently used without borders for documents with parallel columns.
In this case, users want it to behave the same as paragraph text.

If users want a regular hanging indent inside a table cell, then they will use
a Before Text indent at least equal to the first line negative indent.

But not as a bug fix, because it is definitely NOT a bug..

1. If the text cannot print outside of the table, then it should not be
possible to
position the cursor there. That is, the minimum negative indent should be no
greater than the Text Before positive indent. If OpenOffice allows the user
to
enter more than is possible, then that is the bug.

Set the left page margin to zero, and set the first line paragraph indent to
-1.
Then start typing. Nothing seems to happen at first, but text starts to appear
from
outside the page. This is ridiculous.

In WordPerfect, the negative left indent automatically stops at the edge of the
printable area, though it can, of course, exceed the page margin. The dialogue
box
does not allow entry of a value that would give impossible results.

I agreed that changing the behaviour to print outside the table would be an
enhancement, not a bug fix, but the current behaviour is plainly wrong.

You can position the cursor outside the table (or page), and you can type
there,
but the text does not display, nor does it print.

I hope that at least some OpenType features can be implemented soon:

1) Common ligatures: at least ff fl fi ffl ffi - word count and spell-check
should
also allow for ligatures
2) Small Capitals if they exist in the font should be used for Small Caps Font
Effect
3) Super/subscripts if they exist should be used for super/subscript effects
4) An option to select Old Style Figures as part of the paragraph style

Word and character count is correct for fi and fl ligatures mapped to the
Private
Use Area, but not for ff fi fl ffi and ffl ligatures mapped to the Alphabetic
Presentation forms.

This should be updated as Unicode encoding is the new standard.

ve owers is counted correctly, but not five flowers.

The necessity of inserting a footer in order to insert page numbers etc. is not
always seen.

One does not need to insert a footer in order to insert page numbers — one can
also insert a header, or even insert them directly on the page for a single
page
document, which is why the existing method is right.

The only thing needed is to make it easier to do. I suggest that the best way
to
do this is to modify the default template to include a footer with a centred
page
number, and a blank header. If show text bounderies is on by default (I
believe it is), then new users won't find it hard to figure out where page
numbers have to go, and they can just click inside the header or footer area.

An insert page number dialogue is also another way to solve the problem.
However,
what should happen if headers or footers already exist? Clearly they should not
be replaced.

If that route is followed, insert fields, page number should not call the
insert
page number dialogue, but should just insert the page number code where the
cursor is, as it does now. There should be a separate menu item for Insert
Page
Number.

Agreed. The current value of 1 pt is only suitable if applied to huge text. For
normal body text point size the tracking for condensed or expanded text should
scoll in increments of 0.1 points.

Best would be to scroll in increments of 1%, which is 0.1 points for 10 point
text, but 1 point for 100 point text.

I suggest that the simplest option would be to incease the allowable limits for
condensing tracking. The current default for scrolling is 1 point, which is
absurd (see http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=17732).

Instead, make the value scroll in increments of 1% and permit a maximum of
100%.
This is, in fact, more than enough for overstrike, as very few 10 point
characters in any font are 10 points wide. This will also be sufficient for
expanded text — 72 point text could be expanded by 1

This old issue seems to be the only one on this, and it has no votes yet. It is
a feature that I am used to from WordPerfect, and one that I find useful to
keep
headings with a decent amount of text. Two lines is not enough. If the heading
style could have a Text Flow attribute ConEOP to keep three or four lines
together, a heading like the following would break to the next page.

Heading

Surprisingly, I found only five issues on this. I guess it is more of a DTP
requirement than a Word-processing requirement. However, people do use
OpenOffice
for DTP, so this feature would be very useful.

If PDF/X1 standard prepress features could be added to PDF output too, this
would be a great feature. Crop marks, registrations marks, densitometer bar,
colour calibration bar, and file information are all available in Page Plus.

Index marks placed at the beginning of a word break full justification when
that
word starts on a new line. This is clearly visible if field shadings are
displayed.
The result is the same in Print Preview and in PDF output.

An easy work-around is to move the index marks to the end of the word indexed.
If
the default position for index marks could be changed to the end of a word,
this
would solve most instances of this bug.

The possibility exists that a long word might be indexed and might break across
a
page boundary. In this rare case, the index reference would be on the page
where
the word ends, rather than where it begins, therefore perhaps a more robust
solution is need to the text justification engine to ignore field codes.

[sw-issues] [Issue 23541] Index from concordance fil e to ignore optional hyphens in doc

If one uses optional hyphens [-] in index entries they are also treated
differently. For example the following would generate four entries in the index:

concordance
con[-]cordance
concor[-]dance
con[-]cor[-]dance

It would be better if all optional hyphens [-]could be ignored when comparing
index
entries.

Perhaps ordinary hyphens should be ignored too, though this is debatable.
Perhaps the following should be treated as a single entry? (anti-semitism)

anti-semitism
antisemitism
anti[-]semitism
antisemit[-]ism
anti-semit[-]ism

Those following this issue may be interested in this bug/feature that I just
discovered. The Huge Font bug cropped up over a year ago, but I failed to find
the
cause at that time. It just disappeared after a while. It occurred again in
2.0.4
and I now discovered the cause with some help from Oo forum users.

I came across this bug while editing an HTML file. I zoomed in to 200% and
afterward found that the font size in help had increased to 200%

Oo users Foxcole and Acknak helped me find out what was causing the problem.

To set the font size in help to what you want, zoom in while in web view to
120%,
150% or whatever. Zoom to 100% to reset the Help Font Size back to the default.

I came across this bug while editing an HTML file. I zoomed in to 200% and
afterwards found that the font size in help had increased to 200%. However, I
had
no recollection of what I had done that caused the change, and could find no
way to
revert to a normal font size.

This bug is actually a useful feature, so perhaps this could be documented in
help
or made easier to use on purpose, and impossible to use by accident.

To set the font size in help to whatver you want, zoom in while in Web View to
120%, 150% or whatever. Zoom to 100% to reset the Help Font Size back to the

The Quickstarter is too slow to be of much benefit.

On my system, a 1Ghz AMD Athlon with 384 Mbytes of RAM:-

With the Quickstarter loaded, Writer takes about 30 seconds to load.

Without the Quickstarter loaded, Writer takes about 48 seconds to load.

When Writer has been loaded once and closed, Writer takes about 2 seconds to
load
(i.e. from a warm start). That is the kind of performance gain I would like to
have.

I guess there is a trade-off between how much code is loaded at boot-up, and
how
much more is loaded on quick launch. Is there some way to improve the
Quickstarter
so that it really deserves the name?

The typographical spaces (U2000 to U209B) can all be inserted in Open Office
(2.02)
from the Insert Symbol dialogue if they are defined in the current font.

However, if you switch to a font that does not include them, they are displayed
as
not.def glyphs (rectangles or squares).

Serif Page Plus 11 displays these spaces correctly even if the selected font
does
not contain the typographical spaces.

Agreed. This is an important issue for better typesetting, especially on narrow
columns.

1. Reduce/increase spacing between words
2. Reduce/increase spacing between letters.

I found this issue when looking for an issue on the non-breaking spaces. This
is
also illustrated in the attachment. Non-breaking spaces are not expanded as
they
should be. A non-breaking space is identical to a space character, except that
it
does not break at the margin. It is not a fixed width space like em-space or
figure-
space.

This is an important issue, especially when justifying narrow columns.

A non-breaking space is the same as a regular space, except that it does not
break
at the margin. If justification is turned on, non-breaking spaces should be
expanded or contracted to justify the line, just like ordinary spaces.

A non-breaking space is not a fixed width space like en-space, em-space, figure-
space, etc.

WordPerfect has done this right for years, with the additional benefit of micro-
justification (expanding or contracting space between individual letters when
the
word-spacing limits are reached). There is an option to adjust the word/letter
spacing limits. The default word-spacing is compress to 60% and expand to 400%
of
the default space width. After those limits, letter-spacing (tracking) is
applied.

Though I can see that this is an important issue for some users, I think that
the
way to solve it is the implement a Normal Mode for proof-reading rather than
spending developers' time on adding an option to change this behaviour.

When scrolling from the bottom of one page to the top of the next in page
layout
mode, where there is a gap to show the page break, the page is going to have to
jump by several lines, espcially if there are footnotes at the bottom of the
previous page, and a header at the top of the next page.

In Word Perfect's Draft Mode, though I can see the footnote indexes, I cannot
edit
the notes easily (One has to use the menus or shortcut keys). Although the
footnotes should NOT be visible at the bottom of the page, because that would
defeat the purpose of Normal mode, I still want to be able to refer to my notes
while editing, as checking footnotes is an important part of the editing
process.

When Normal mode is implemented, please retain the option to edit the notes by
clicking on the note index number in the text, and retain the option to view
the
notes as a Tooltip if that option is selected in preferences.

There are lots of work-arounds for this issue, but work-arounds are not what is
wanted. What is wanted is more shortcut assignment options.

1. Use of Alt Key combinations as well as Control, Control Shift. Two
keystrokes shortcuts like ~n to type ñ as in Word, might also be wanted by some
users.
2. Direct assignment of text — one or more characters
3. A simplified dialogue like that attached to make the customising process
easier.

This can be achieved already by inserting Fontwork, but I agree it would be a
very
useful enhancement to have. The current default hairline width for outline text
is
too thin for most purposes

The attachment was produced in FontCreator from High-Logic using the Hollow
Transformation on Bitstream Vera bold and regular characters. The program's
default
setting of 30 funits is a bit to light for my liking so I used a setting of 50
funits in the horizontal anf vertical directions to get the attached results.

What is needed is to be able to set the outline weight as a percentage of point
size. In my attachment, 5% would be about right. A range from 0.1% (hairline)
to
10% would be needed.

Alternatively, one could set the line weight in points, which might be more
easily
understood by users, but it would be less flexible as the weight of the outline
would change if the font was resized.

Correction: my mental arithmetic is a bit dodgy this morning. 50/2048 is 2.4%
not 5%

Expand single word option doesn't work if there is no space in the line. (see
attachment). Writer does not seem to add inter-character spacing to justify the
line, only inter-word spacing.

[sw-issues] [Issue 4579] Special Character Shortcuts

Alt-key assignments are useful for much more than typing special characters.
They
can replace other shortcuts freeing the control key for typing accented
characters,
which is the easiest key combination to use, as it exists on both sides of the
keyboard. Typing codepoints into a dialogue requires more keystrokes and one
needs
to remember the numbers. This is a very inefficient way to type foreign
characters.

In Opera I can type āīūḍḷṃṇṭ very easily with the control key. If I need to use
Alt
for typing or other functions I can — no problem — alt m = m-dash, since
control m
is already used to type ṃ (m dot below).

For a word-processor, the current limit of control and control shift is too
limited.

I would like to the Alter Key to be customisable, and be able to assign text
directly. In WordPerfect, even the alpha/numeric keys can be modified if one
wishes,
and entire paragraphs of text can be essigned to a shortcut.

Control, Control Shift, Alter, Alter Shift, Control Alter, Control Alter Shift,
with
any function key or alpha/numeric key. Wordpefect's functions, macros, or
external
programs can also be assigned — all from the same simple tabbed dialogue.

I closed all other programs to give Open Office as much memory as available,
and
tried again with exactly the same result.

I tried the same test in Serif Page Plus 11 and Wordpad with no problem.

This crash is 100% reproducible on my system.
Probably someone else will come across the same problem before long.

Recipe:

From the file open dialogue, right-click on a file and delete it.
Then try to open any other file.

Result
Writer locks up completely. Ctrl Alter Delete shows that it is not responding,
but
the End Task dialogue doesn't come up at all, or only after a long time. Then
End
Task doesn't work. It seems that a manual reboot is the only remedy.

After rebooting the file opens normally.
Tested twice, deleting different files, and opening different files the same
result.
