I'm deeply ashamed to report that the (non) issue is resolved. My software
firewall - Zone Alarm Pro - had developed an internal inconsistency in that all
external indicators in the GUI showed that OOo had access to the internet, but
nevertheless access was blocked.

A similar problem with Firefox caused me to remove all (nearly) traces of ZA and
re-install, leading to access being restored to both products.

Please accept my apologies for the time wasted on this issue.

-os: Given that all 3 failure modes are regressive from m2 and that they are
still present in m7 (rc2), it seems reasonable to assume a single point of
failure. I find it somewhat improbable that 3 different bugs relating to
internet access were introduced at the same time.;-)

As a further aid to diagnosis I have attached another screenshot.

OOo fails to find the outgoing mail server (attached screenshot) in both of the
above cases, also when seeking extension updates via the Package Manager.
Embedded URLs within documents work fine and OOo 2.4.1 still functions
correctly.

This is a regression from earlier OOo-DEVmx releases, probably m2 if memory
serves.

POP 3 is a red herring! The problem I tried to describe is with internet access
generally. The failing elements:
1 Test Mail Settings - cannot connect with the outgoing mail server
2 Check for updates
3 Within Package Manager, Check for updated packages
all indicate a central point of failure that has absolutely nothing to do with
POP 3.

Test Settings fail as illustrated in attached image. Settings were copy and
pasted from OOo v2.4.0(which works fine) to ensure no typos.

Note that the version is:
OOo_3.0.0beta_20080429_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe
which is not displayed in the Found in version spin box.

I cannot see the duplication from a reading of the earlier issue (67664). There
is no mention of a header specific bug, and the earlier symptoms appear to be
different in their effect: I reported a bug in the conversion from OOo to MS
Word, whereas 67664 appears to be the reverse.

I suggest that the only similarity is in the use of shadowed text and that we
are dealing with more than one bug.

No. It's my mistake. I haven't used MS Word for many years, but retain a copy on
one machine for interchange with those people who haven't yet discovered OOo. In
converting a document I noticed that shadowed, black text in the OOo header did
not render as black in Word and assumed a bug, but it seems to be just a display
characteristic of Word about which I had forgotten. Printed output is correct,
so obviously no bug.

Humble apologies for the inconvenience.

When saving in MS Word format (Word 2000), header text that has been formatted
with a Shadow effect (Automatic (Black) text with light grey shadow) is rendered
in MS Word 2000 with the text body having adopted the shadow colour. This only
occurs within a header and NOT within body text.

2 sample files, the .odt original and the .doc derivative, will be uploaded
imminently.

It is presently necessary to edit in cell if one wishes to enter a line break
in data, for example in multi-line address data. It would save hours of
instructor and user time if line breaks could be entered in the input line as
well.

1.In Step 5 the layout is idiosyncratic, with paragraph marks all over the place
so as to space the address block frame and salutation, which are constrained to
be on the far left of the page.

If one performs a manual edit to fix this, such as by turning Headers on and
modifying the Address Block frame to get it out of the way of the header -- most
letters have the sender in the upper part of the page -- then OOo becomes
unstable in an infinite loop, requiring a Kill command to get back control of
ones machine.

It's difficult to see a benefit from using the wizard, as opposed to creating a
form letter manually, mainly because of the following limitations.

1.In Step 4 creating the salutation will only allow the sex related Mr. and Mrs.
It makes no allowance for Miss, nor does it permit sexless addressing such as
Dr., or The Right Honourable etc..

2.Still in Step 4, it is possible to bodge something like Dr. Crippen, but
only by creating an impossible trigger for recognising a female recipient, such
that the merge defaults to male. Of course one cannot have a prefix such as
Dear in this case and it has to be manually entered in Step 6.

3.Again in Step 4, the General salutation is not editable and the default values
are – a technical term here – somewhat limited. It would be a big step forward
if this list could be edited and data source fields entered, so as to support 2)
above.

This issue appears to have been resolved in OOo V2.3. Hidden paragraphs perform
the required hiding and there are no problems with spaces in data source
fields.

Insertion of Fontwork items from the Gallery creates unusable objects if styles
from 16 upwards are used. The sample text Fontwork is invisible and, if
located by cursor sometimes renders in black, but not consistently, and any
attempt at editing the text results in the containing frame's closure.

Notes:
1 I have only sampled a few styles above 15, not tested each individually.
2 The problem is manifest under Windows XP Pro and Debian Linux (Etch), hence
the OS=All. I lack access to other OSs, but IssueZilla appears not to permit a
distinction.

The dialogue box for Insert/Indexes and Tables/Indexes and Tables/Entries tab
does not render the text on the Structure letter buttons correctly under Windows
XP (E-F_rendering-bug(WinXP).png). Rendering is correct under Windows 2000
(E-F_rendering-bug(Win2K).png) and Debian Linux Etch (no screen shot).

This is arguably a P3 bug as the Windows XP user is presented with advice about
usage of 'E' and 'L' buttons in OpenOffice.org Help, but actually sees 'F' and
'I' in the dialogue. This will undoubtedly cause some confusion amongst our
users.

Updated info. The bug is still present in 2.0.4rc3. I can confirm that the
symptom is triggered by changing the user interface from 'Default' to English
(UK) and that it is reversed by returning to 'Default'.

This is curious as the Default UI claims to follow the Locale, which is set to
English (UK) at all times. If the English language pack is installed, isn't this
behaviour anomalous?

Further evidence:
1) Close Quickstarter.
2) Delete (rename) user configuration directory.
3) Restart OO.o Writer. Problem no longer evident in default configuration.
4) Re-select Tools/Options/Language Settings/Languages and set to English (UK).
5) Problem returns as per attached screen shot (OO.o_menubug1.jpg).

The above strongly suggests that the bug is in the language pack, or in the user
interface. Probably a missing text string??

Second screen shot - OO.o_menubug2.jpg - was uploaded because some programs have
difficulty with un-compressed JPEG files, the format used for the first screen
shot. In the second case the file is readable by its creator, Paintshop Pro X,
Irfanview and The GIMP 2.2.10, as well as OO.o 2.0.4 rc2.

When View/Nonprinting Characters is selected, space characters that fall around
an automatic line break are suppressed. This creates a user problem in the
detection of multiple spaces between words, where only one might be desired.

The spaces remain in the document, as evidenced by subsequent editing, therefore
it is anomalous to hide them from the creator/editor,especially as the user
might be a member of that highly desirable group, former Microsoft Word users,
where this behaviour does not occur.

Create a 2x5 table, in each cell of which is embedded a 2 column, 1 row table.

The embedded, inner table can be selected and copied to the clipboard, but it
cannot be pasted into any of the other meta cells? The paste operation silently
fails.

NB The table is successfully copied to the clipboard, as evidenced by it being
pastable to other, non-tabular document locations.

For information only! This is not a personal problem.

A recently downloaded label template (Avery 5160) from the Avery web site
(http://www.avery.com/) fails to convert accurately from MS Office .doc format
when opened in OOo 2.0.2. The text boxes in the original are converted to frames
and are vertically misplaced in the resulting document.

To be attached are:
1) The Avery original.
2) A PDF file exported from OOo showing the displacement.
3) A PDF file from MS Office 2000 via Ghostscript showing the correct layout.

I'm at a loss to understand what further info could be required. The sample
template (mailing labels) contains hidden paragraphs; the sample spreadsheet
contains a variety of matching address entries, some with absent fields to test
the functionality. Creating a data source (obviously named 'AddressBook') from
the spreadsheet allows a simple test that reveals that Hidden Paragraphs are not
hidden!!

Please advise what else is required.

The Hidden paragraph feature that functioned correctly in earlier release

hidden.

A sample spreadsheet and template that exhibit the problem will be attached

The response suggests that analysis was somewhat superficial. One of the data
source headings, and hence one of the merge fields is a string, Post Code,
containing a space character. If this string is not quoted the result is worse
than the redundant paragraph mark - the field is hidden whether or not there is
printable data!

It may be a design intention to prohibit space characters in spreadsheet column
headings, but I can find no such bar in the Help files, nor in any
documentation. It would be a strange restriction, but if intentional there
should be a very obvious statement to this effect that could not be missed by
any installer/user of OpenOffice.org.

An obvious workaround is to modify all data sources to eliminate spaces (and any
other prohibited characters), but promulgating this to all current users could
prove interesting.

Finally, the case of imported files in alien formats, e.g. MS Excel, needs to be
considered. Spaces are not an issue in column headings in those products.

Regards

Peter HB

Using hidden sections to suppress null data fields in address labels, envelopes
and the like does not function correctly in that a redundant paragraph mark is
retained, or inserted, thus destroying the intended layout.

It is clear from the lists that users, including this one, expect a level of
functionality similar to that found elsewhere, where one ticks a box to suppress
blank fields. There seems to be a high WIBNI factor (Wouldn't It Be Nice If) for
this feature to be included; but if not, at least a fix for the bug would be
appreciated.

This is such a trivial thing to fix it is difficult to understand why no
developer seems to have commented on the issue.

Please fix it, so that tables, label sheets etc. can be laid out correctly in
Writer: I really don't want to have to create and maintain a private fork.

That sounds like MS speak! OO.o 1.1.4 permits the saving of multiple versions of
a given file: I cannot be alone in making use of this feature so as to maintain
a historical record of, in my case, an association membership list for which I
am responsible.

If 1.1.4 supported this feature and OO.o 2.0 does not, and I cannot upgrade
without a major effort to re-design my methodology, how can this loss of
function (and data) be viewed as an enhancement request? We do want to supersede
MS Office in the corporate environment, don't we.

Is anyone in? This issue is a category 2 show-stopper - loss of data - and yet
apparently is of no interest to QA.

The version 2 (.odt) of my example Writer document is vasly reduced in size
compared with the version 1 (.sxw) (from 1,557 kB to 21 kB), thus confirming
that the data is truly lost. If OO.o (and Star Office) truly want to compete in
the corporate market place this class of bug cannot be allowed to appear in
public!

Regards.

Calc and Writer documents, created in several releases of OO.o version 1, do not
save correctly in 1.9.104. The opened version is saved correctly, both via the
conversion wizard and via Save as, but all previous versions maintained within
the source document disappear in the resulting 2.0 format file.

[sw-issues] [Issue 42870] General input/output error on save

The bug has been eliminated from 680m79 and indeed has become irrelevant as
templates can now be loaded, edited and saved without the need to Save as...

Thanks to whoever fixed it. This package just gets better.

Apropos of erzielin question - yes that is exactly the procedure that provokes
the error and it is consistently reproducible.

When saving to a file that pre-exists, having selected the option to overwrite
the original, a General input/output error is reported as follows:

Error saving the document xxx
General error
General input/output error

Probably irrelevant, but the file format was an open text template (.ott)
