I had suggested two different features: (a) transposed cells and (b)
concatenated list.

Even if the transposed summary is not provided, we can derive it easily from the
concatenated list, as shown below:

For example, I take-
John: 3423498242, 5676767756, 0923424252, 5647756757.
Barbara: 1324234245, 4563345454.

And then use "text-to-column" command, with "comma" as separator.
Each individual entry will be moved to a different cell.

[graphics-issues] [Issue 59195] PowerPoint tables are impo rted incorrectly

Well, I had precisely the same problems with OOo 3.1.0 and switched over to
OxygenOffice 3.0.1 because I heard that it has applied many patches to OOo.

(OxygenOffice always lags a little behind OOo, so its 3.1.0 version is yet to be
released)

In OxygenOffice, the table's cells are not converted to text boxes, and the
table can be edited (adjust row/column dimension by dragging border or by
editing the properties in the dialog, etc.)

However, the following glitches are still there in OxygenOffice:
1. When I insert a row/column, it is always with the default (blue) background
color, with no borders. It does not copy the previous row's formatting.

2. If I click in the last cell of the table and then press TAB, OxygenOffice
does not insert a new row at the end of the table.

Both these behaviors are from MS Office; so I do not know whether to expect them
in OOo or OxygenOffice.

To conclude, the problem is still not resolved in OOo.

That's a strange reason to say "worksforme".

Lot of bugs are open because no one processes them any further.
but how can you conclude "WFM"??

If it is really WFM for YOU, close it by all means, otherwise please leave it
open and wait for others to respond.

Thanks...

I tried OxygenOffice 3.0.1 (because it says on the tin that it applies many
patches that Sun has avoided because of politics.)

OxygenOffice does not have problem-1, and it has problem-2 but to much lesser
extent (when you click inside a cell to edit a line, it moves only a little
downwards. In comparison, the line moves by a much larger amount in OOo 3.1
RC2.)

I have not tried OOo 2.2; but different versions of OOo seem to have different
amount of movement when in edit mode. This can be investigated further.

***
It is not the question of advertising- With a 80% share, MSO does not need any
advertising. OOo does. Through word of mouth of users. BUT when there is no
compatibility with MSO, and certain large-scale loss of formatting, no one would
even try out OOo.

Most people do not use OOo (or any other freeware) out of a sense of duty or
social responsibility. They do it to save money. Purely selfish reason. But if
they hear that OOo is too painful, they will not abandon MSO. Many have already
paid for MSO, so they may as well continue using it. Others are using a pirated
copy of MSO, so the fact that OOo comes free does not impress them.

The only way to make them switch to OOo is to offer them more features with
guaranteed painless migration. And THAT factor is missing.

BTW the SP3 of MSO has now taken away the USP of OOo: pdf conversion. It also
can handle the ODF docs. They have done it despite being market leaders. What is
the OOo counterstrategy?

I have had major problems when I convert documents (especially, odt->doc).
Besides, because 80% of market share is with Microsoft, a lot of MSO format
files are in circulation, which must remain in their native format if the edited
files are to be shared with the other users again.

So conversion of files is usually not an option.

If a software cuts you off from 80% of the total users, is it logically
designed?

The target is changed to 3.2, which may take a few months to appear (provided
that the target is not pushed even further,as has happened to many of the bugs I
raised).

The moot point is, do we have something actually usable for the time being??

When the OOo team decides to live with such basic issues, the OOo becomes a lab
model (a toy that is good to look at, but CANNOT be used in serious use.)

The pdf file attached by rainerbielefeld does not show problem # 2 (text shifts
away when you try to edit it, by clicking in a cell of a table). However, I have
attached two screenshots, where I had clicked in a cell to edit it. You can
compare these screenshots to see that the text jumps away from its position.
When you exit the edit mode, the text again jumps back to its original position.
Thus the entire purpose of editing is lost, because you cannot set the left/top
margins!

I can attach a screencast (flash file) if this second problem is not clear.

Also, note that the figures in Column-1 to Column-3 are CENTER-aligned. That is
why the problem with their left margin is not so apparent. However, the text in
the first (untitled) column is LEFT-aligned. You can clearly see that in OOo,
this text touches the left edge of the table (i.e., its left margin is reduced
to zero.)

I am reporting for 310m11 (build 9399), which is not listed in this bugzilla.

Problem statement:
If a PowerPoint file that contains a table is opened in Impress, it shows the
text in wrong position. This is seen in two different ways:

1. The left margin and top margin are reduced to ZERO.
2. When we click inside a cell to edit the text, the text jumps to a new
location.

As a result, any powerpoint file becomes practically useless in Impress!

I am attaching a zip that contains-
1. The sample ppt file
2. Screenshots to illustrate the two problems described above.

I simply cannot understand why this has to be called an enhancement. In fact,
the re-designation only serves to demotes the issue. (While a defect has to be
attacked ASAP, an enhancement can vbe deferred indefinitely.)

Well, if it WAS designed to be so, WHY was it designed so illogically? What was
the rationale behind the existing design (IF any)?

Activate ruler. Now insert a table in the slide and insert any text in that
table. Click anywhere in the text.

The ruler is supposed to show the margins right above the paragraph. But it
shows the margins aligned to the left edge of the whole table.

As a result, the user gets no visual feedback about how the paragraph will look
AFTER he drags the markers to new positions.

See sample screenshots.

I have a 375+ page odt file that has complex tables,
* tables spread over multiple pages,
* Several cells merged
* images placed inside cells, etc.

The headers and footers of the pages contain a 3-column 1-row table, where
chapter name, page number etc. are placed. There is a horizontal line below the
table. The cells contain arrows (hyperlinked to the previous/next chapter).

When I open the document with OOo 2.4.2, it looks fine.
But when I open the document with v3.1.0, the arrows and the horizontal line get
displaced. They appear partly in the page content area and party outside the
page boundary (in the grayed out portion of the Writer GUI).

The file is already available with you (I sent it for the crash with v3.0'
problem).

I just noticed your instructions about setting emails. I have already set that
option long ago. I have used these report numbers in Issuezilla in the past.

But the problem is that for many crashes, the crash wizard does not send the
crash report. (It simply recovers the file.) In many other cases, the wizard
does not respond to the final "send" button (probably because the recovered file
has already crashed and launched the wizard again).

Anyway, I guess 3 reports are sufficient.

Please let me know if/how I can install OOo 3.0 side-by-side with 2.4.2.

Thanks.

rmmqkuc and r92qkuc.

All other reports were lost (at least 10 reports today itself).

The situation got so worse that the OOo crashed even before the recovery exited.
All I could do was simply click the NEXT buttons in a chain of recovery wizards.

I could barely see the recovered document, because the next recovery wizard
covered it up.

To avoid further crashes, I have uninstalled v3.0 and re-installed 2.4.2. But
please tell me if I can install 3.0 also side-by-side; so that whenever you want
more experiments, I can provide new results.

Not so fast!

I have stated that this problem is quite consistent. So at the most, it should
be set to "NeedMoreInfo". Really, the closing the bugs at any pretext has
reached an art form here!

Please ask me to submit more debugging data (whatever you need).
If you don't know what to ask for then let me talk to the concerned developer.

I'll let go of the other bug (runtime error), because that's random. but not
this one.

I downloaded the latest OOo yesterday (dev 3.1) and the @#$&% thing has crashed
SIX times since this morning. Three times the crash recovery recovered and
immediately crashed. Only twice did it created a crash report; out of which it
failed once to send the report.

P.S. I did not do anything on my own: The problem happens on its own volition.
So there are no steps for reproduction.

When you receive the file, just keep it open in v3.0. It may crash.

Note that the "crash after some time" problem is later than this issue.
(I had edited the file inbetween seeing the latest problem).
So you may not see THIS issue, but only the other one.

Forgot to mention that apart from the 100% CPU, the access to hard disk also
goes up very high: It starts making a very loud hissing (spinning) noise.
*

UPDATE:
I uninstalled OOo v3 and tried the new v2.4.2 RC1. It can open the document and
edit without any problem whatsoever.

So, it is confirmed that v3 has some NEW problem that is not there in 2.4.2.

***
Which features are not there in 2.4.2 vis-a-vis 3??

When I opened the document in 2.4.2 for the first time, a pop up window warned
that the file was created with a later version, and some features in the file
will be LOST. The pop up display did not elaborate which are the features that
would be lost.

Is this a routine warning (when someone tries an older version), or something is
really lost?? Which are those features?

Writer 3.0 crashes a few seconds after loading a large odt (375+ pages)
document.

The previous RC version did not crash.

Once the document is loaded, the CPU quickly climbs to 100% and stays there.

I know that Ooo has some problematic code for aligning the contents of large
complex documents (it enters endless loops which can't be exited). So I used the
"Tools> Update>Update All" menu. Writer completes this successfully. However,
within a few seconds after that, it crashes.

When Writer crashes, it simply vanishes, and the recovery wizard starts.

I can send the problematic document if you could provide an email address.

Thanks.

While editing a 370+ page odt file, the OOo suddenly pops up a runtime error
warning. The heading of this window says C++ runtime.

When I press OK, OOo exits.

However, I can continue working on OOo if I do NOT press OK. (e.g. I could save
a file that was not yet completed when the error message popped up.)

Happened twice.

When I restart OOo, the recovery wizard recovers the file, but the latest
changes are LOST. Secondly, it does not create a crash report.

This is ridiculous.

No one even verified the issue based on the specific crash report provided.
A more appropriate response would be either "Need More info"

After a long time, someone closes it as "worksforme" even without checking.
A more honest description would be "won't fix".

I suggest a special category, which can be described thus:
"The version SEEMS to work; although no one verified even that.
But what the hell, let's close it all the same."

Why do we even bother if this is how our feedback is to be treated??

Well, for the last several months, I need to edit the document only rarely. As a
consequence, the frequency of crashes have also gone down. Secondly, I have
started taking precautions to maintain a periodic backup; and then simply
discard the recovered file, preferring to repeat the last editing session (from
last saved-to-crash).

So I would not be in a position to provide new information.

The current design of Impress provides a single "Notes" area attached with each
slide.

This can be used either as speaker notes or as handout notes; but not both.

Note that these notes are totally different; both in content and use:

* Speaker notes contain expert level comments and additional information
required to answer queries from the audience. They also contain tips/reminders
to the speaker for introduction, ice-breakers, coffee break, etc.

In dual monitor mode presentations (i.e., when the presenter uses his laptop as
prompter), he needs to see THESE notes (and NOT the handout notes).

* Handout notes are more basic level. Typically, they elaborate the bullet
points in the slide; or comment on the charts/figures provided in the slide.

Creating two different presentations (one with speaker notes and the other with
handout notes) is not viable, because you cannot change both documents in sync.

Therefore, please provide an extra area to enter the speaker notes (as opposed
to the audience notes). Also, in dual monitor mode, the presenter should be able
to view the speaker notes.

STOP press:

I decided to repeat all experiments, and now I am able to insert the picture
from the problematic folder; and also open the file. Strangely, I have neither
restarted the PC nor done anything with my OOo user profile. The problem simply
went away! (And for the same reason, I guess it may reappear also.)

BTW during my experiments, OOo crashed several times. I have sent all crash
recovery reports; each time adding detailed description of the experiment in
which OOO crashed.

Yes, Impress also crashes the same way.

And YES, if I open the image file using the File>open in the main OOo window, it
crashes too.

So this is NOT exactly a "insert" problem.

BTW I also carried out another experiment, and came across a slightly different
crash: I copied the jpg to another folder that did NOT have the problem. This
time, I could at least use the command to insert the picture. But before OOo
could ACTUALLY show the inserted picture in the file, it crashed. But at least
this time it lasted a little more (till I could insert the picture).

In yet another repeat of the experiment, it actually showed the picture for a
couple of seconds, and then crashed. (This image was also taken from a "normal"
folder.)

To conclude, I see FOUR different crashes; probably depending on the source
folder-
1. Crash as soon as I navigate to the partition/folder (even before I actually
insert the image)
2. Crash just after the insertion, but BEFORE OOo shows the inserted picture in
the file.
3. Crash after OOo shows the inserted picture for 2-3 seconds.
4. Crash when I open the image using file>open command from the starting window
of OOo.

I have opened a fresh odt file, and I am trying to insert two pictures fom my
hard disk. but as soon as I navigate to the partition, Writer crashes. I cannot
even go to the folder that contains the images.

My dual boot PC has 3 HDDs: a 40 GB IDE and two SATA (120 GB and 250 GB).
Windows XP-SP2 and Linux (OpenSuSE 11) are on different partitions of the IDE
disk.

Special note: After several crashes, I found a trick: I copied the entire
absolute path of the image from explorer, and pasted it in window that pops up
when we use the insert>picture>from file... menu.

But this landed me in deeper trouble: Now I cannot insert the second picture,
because the Writer defaults to the problematic folder. As soon as I click on the
"from file" toolbar button (or the insert>picture>from file... menu.), Writer
crashes instantly.

The problematic folder (and also its partition) is actually in active use 9I use
it with several other applications without problems).

I can insert the images from the same partition (and folder) into Word.

The recovery wizard has two tasks:
1. Recover the crashed document(s) and
2. Report the crash to Sun

Both tasks should be independent. Instead, the wizard is designed in such a way
that if the user does not want to recover a document, he cannot send a crash
report also.

There are many cases where the user may not want to recover his document, but
still he would be interested in sending the crash report. For example, when OOo
crashes while loading the document. Since the user has not edited the document
yet, he won't prefer to recover a potentially corrupted document.

Desired: The wizard should treat recovery and reporting tasks independently.

Reporting for Dev300m29, which is not in the pull-down list.

In my OOo, the "download automatically" option (in Tools>Options menu) is
unselected from the very beginning (I have cross-checked this). Yet OOo has
started the download without asking for permission.

I came to know only when the green "Update" button in the OOo window showed a
balloon called "download of update in progress".

Initially I thought it is updating the plugins (which is Ok because plugins are
small). But this turns out to be the main OOo application.

This is a problem because OOo installer is large, and I prefer to download it
through a scheduler, to download it during the "free download" hours offered by
my ISP.

The only unusual thing that happened before problem: OOo crashed TWICE, while
trying to load a 380-page complex document. Each time I canceled the recovery of
the document (because I had not even opened the document, let alone edit it).

I wonder if the "Update automatically" option is affected by these crashes...

Issue 90712 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue.

It should be dup of 90502, right?
And how come issue 90712 is dup of issue 90726 (which was raised LATER)???

P.S. Just noticed this: If I happen to move the pointer from the top side of the
table, the mouse pointer changes to a downward-pointing black arrow ("table
column-selector").

So the pointer is not always "row adjust": It can take any shape.

Mine is Windows XP SP-2.

BTW I have already mentioned that the last version I tried (300m14) was OK.
So something went wrong between m14 and m17.

Well, let us assume a scenario:

Someone stops me at office and tells me, "Your tie is askew and your fly is
open."

Is it logical for me to say-

"Unfortunately you clubbed two unrelated issues!! The only way I will close my
fly is you will have to tell me again. I know what's wrong, but policy is
policy!"

You see, there is a risk that the guy will not bother again.
He would not be so passionate and caring about my closing the fly.

Worse, he will simply go around and tell others what a lout I am.

So a policy-maker in OOo community has to wake up to this problem and explain to
the front-ending QA guys NOT to bounce valid inputs in the name of policy.
Just thank the public for bothering at all, and take care of the ISSUE at hand!

There are so many issues split from this one that I am confused as to where to
add my new observations!

Well, the 300m14 seemed to have resolved the issue. But the latest 300m17 has
the problem, and it is worse than any earlier versions!

The document hangs every few seconds.

(This is not the same issue as "indefinitely hanging" problem I reported
separately. The document DOES become available after about a minute. So there is
a duty cycle: a few seconds of editing, followed by 1-2 minutes of waiting!)

Reporting for 300m17.

Even when the mouse is NOT on a table border, its type is changed to "adjust
row". Even when the mouse is in the middle of a cell or OUTSIDE a table.

Even the "Adjust table row" tooltip appears! (not always, though).

This is seen only in 300m17 (300m14 was OK).

I am attaching a screen-capture (an HTML file with a flash demo).
Captured with Wink.

To view, unzip in any folder and then click on the HTML file.
NOTE: Keep your browser in full-screen mode by pressing F11!

That's exactly my point: Is a new feature added to Issuezilla, which solves this

If that has NOT happened, then it is NOT resolved.

If you agree this to be a valid issue, then why not keep it open and set a
future target, rather than saying "never"?

I don't want an overnight solution, of course.
But at least add it to the TO DO list.

Part of the problem is if we select a part of CHM file (text+ several images),
it won';t get copied. You have to select each image and paste them as bitmap.
This is too convoluted.

Andrew, I doubt whether you ever read through this issue. Probably this is a
software-generated post attached to ALL old issues.

The "sweeping-under-carpet" has reached a new low.

I am absolutely disgusted with how Bugzilla is misused in dealing with the
problems. It has sunk so low that now it is nothing more than forum posting.

The issuezilla is meant to detect problems and track them to closure.

While the users do the first part, the Sun/OOo staff should do the rest.
So why ask the originator to raise another issue? Just clone the topic into a
new issue and start off discussion on it!

The Issuezilla management policy (DOES IT EXIST??) needs to be changed.

I do not understand why resolution is set to "resolved".

Please refer to http://qa.openoffice.org/scdocs/issue_lifecycle.html.

The "RESOLVED" status is to be used when the target system (here, issuezilla) is
modified, and awaiting verification.

In other words, this resolution means that all possible actions are already
taken; and nothing needs to be done further if everything goes well.

But is that so? All that Jeeva offers is to "consider it" **IF** OOo migrates
from IssueZilla to Project Tracker. That's two remote possibilities rolled into
one!

OK let us pretend that those two actions WILL happen in future. Even then, does
this issue deserve a "Resolved" status TODAY? I think Jeeva just handed a death
sentence to it.

Sadly, Sun/OOo staff sweeps maximum possible issues under carpet like this; and
I don't see a voice of sanity who calls out a halt to this madness.

The correct process is to keep the issue OPEN and forward it to the policymaker
who decides whether to migrate to Project Tracker.

Hey these issues are different. I have raised the other issue too (and pointed
it out to avoid any hard work for you guys.)

First of all, has anyone really checked if these are the same issues??

And if the root cause is the same, please do not mark as duplicates (and close)
these issues. Why not set dependencies?

I checked this and it seems to work.

But all said and done, is this an accidental discovery? The closure of any issue
should be through a developer's finding the root cause and changing the relevant
code. In case of OOo, I have seen that many issues just vanish because of
someone else's action (and some of them reappear equally unannounced!)

Although I think it is a shortcoming in OOo, I cannot agree with your reasoning
for closing this issue as "won't fix".

Obviously the OOo logic is faulty.

The same copy/cut+paste commands should work for all sources (HTML/CHM/PDF).
Also, the user should be able to insert images in all formats (png/gif/jpg...)

The user is not concerned about how OOo "sees" the world and responds.

ms-its:ntdef.chm::/Uabrand.gif

BTW using OOo Dev 3.0 Beta now, which behaves the same way.

Sorry for the delay!

A sample file can be found here.
http://imgcdn.pandora.tv/pan_img/KMP/Download/etc/help/Ayuda_KMP.zip

This file is User manual for a popular freeware called "The KMPlayer"
(It is a contribution by a Spanish user at the application's forum.)
I have posted the final link above, but you could start here:
http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-9000.html

N.B. I tried with other files also, with the same result.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open the CHM file.
2. right-click on any image. Selecft "copy"
3. Change to the odt file.
4. Press CTRL+V (or euquivalent to paste the image).

Instead of showing the image, odt file shows a rectangular place-holder.
(See attached file).
*

Further observations:

If I right-click on the source image (in the CHM file), I get the following
property:
mk:@MSITStore:E:\Temp\Ayuda_KMP.chm::/efectosdesonidob2.PNG

But if I right-click on the place-holder in the odt file, and select
"Picture..." option, I get only the file name+extension of the image: (In the
example, efectosdesonidob2.PNG). The "Hyperlinks" tab of the same dialog is
completely empty (nothing in "URL", "Name" and "Frame" boxes.)

If I copy an image from a local CHM file, I cannot paste the clipboard content
into an odt file.

I guess this is different from another bu8g that says images from Internet
cannot be pasted in an ODT file.

The user can resize a column by dragging an edge in the Ruler. For this
discussion, let us call the edge between Column A and Column B.

Here, the COMBINED width of the columns A and B remain unchanged. The rest of
the table also is unaffected.

Often the user wants to increase the column WITHOUT affecting the adjacent
column. Provide two modifiers to enhance this function:

SHFT+drag an edge to reposition the selected edge and all the edges on the right
side of it. Thus the table on the right side of the dragged edge remains
unchanged. The total width of the table would change.

SHFT+ALT+drag an edge for the same effect on the left side of the edge.

(Instead of ALT, we can think of CTRL).

In writing an article, a common requirement is to align the tables with left
margin of the page, or with the center line.

In MS Word, you can select the table and then simply press the "left-align text"
or "center-align text" button. Although the buttons are meant for text, they act
on the whole table, and the table is shifted without altering its
column-widths.

But there is no such provision to align a table to left/right/center in Writer.
This makes it extremely tedious to align a table.

-->es,
I am sorry, but I have to reopen the issue.

These issues are interlinked. I am trying to reach out to the development
community, but lack of proper platform prevents that.

OOo community has only two platforms to exchange ideas, and both cannot handle
conceptual debate.
* The wiki allows anyone to interrupt/override others' thoughts without even
informing the other party. In fact, I copied my last post in the "discussion"
tab of Note2, but the very next day the entire page was erased completely.
Wiki is good for creating a book (which successive authors keep improving). But
not for collective discussion. Specifically, the "Discussion" page should not
allow overwriting.

* Bugzilla is meant to pursue one topic at a time.

What we need is a platform that uses concept-mapping to resolve conflicts in
ideas (e.g. Compendium.
http://compendium.open.ac.uk/institute/community/showcase.htm)

I know all this is not related to the issue, but I don't have any other platform
to discuss it.

The ultimate use of a note is to explain, elaborate, or oppose something that is
already there on the visible part of the page.

Therefore, we need to indicate EXACTLY WHAT are we responding to.
1. A SPOT in a sentence? The current marker can show that.
2. A PART of a sentence? The proposed "highlight text and comment" method will
address that.

But the proposed notes system cannot address the following:
3. Two NON-ADJACENT sentences on the page
4. Several paragraphs put together
5. An image
6. SEVERAL specific parts of an image (each invoking a separate comment)

That's what I am trying to address with the suggested methods.

First of all, thanks for the wiki URL. I'd rather discuss this there in proper
context. At the same time, the issues raised here are treated as references for
the wiki, so I'd like to clarify the points:

1. Sorry- this is NOT a duplicate. issue 5487 recommends that a note should be
attached to a selected part of text. I have not suggested that. My point is the
marker of the note should have ALL the anchoring styles (to page, to paragraph,
to character, as character).

I like the idea in Issue 5847, though. Acrobat has this feature, where
practically all markups added to the original idea have a note which pops up
when you hover the mouse. You can click on the markup to launch the edit window
for the note.

Why does not the wiki treat Acrobat as "best in class" so far as annotation is
concerned? Does it have to be from another word-editor?

2. This idea stretches the word-editor functions. Think of the note as a Post IT
note that can be attached with any feature.

In case of figures, think of it as a extended tooltip. rather than attaching
balloon text to various parts, I can then attach large amount of text to various
parts of the figure.

3. Yes, if the notes are shown in a separate pane, the resizing/repositioning is
automatically provided.

This is enhanced counterpart of issue 25332 and issue 21253, which are for calc
only.

The rationale is exactly the same; but the required implementation is slightly
different, as explained below:

1. LET THE NOTE BE ANCHORED TO PAGE/PARAGRAPH/CHARACTER.

The marker for the note currently behaves as a character in text. (If you insert
the note, it gets attached to the line at the current cursor position. If you
edit that line, the market moves like a character. If you have a selected an
image in the document, you cannot insert a note.)

Instead, the marker should be able to behave like an anchored object (which can
also behave like a character if the author wants, but has three ADDITIONAL
options: anchor to page/paragraph/character).

The user can use this feature to position the note in left margin, or over an
image. This will allow him to explain the entire paragraph or a specific parts
of an image. (Currently this is not possible).

2. LET THE NOTE BE ATTACHED TO ANY SHAPE/IMAGEMAP
Let the author attach the note to any shape/image (currently it can be
associated only to its own marker).

The controls can be like the Imagemap Editor, where the author can select any
part of any image and add a note. Later, when the reader hovers his mouse over
different parts of the image, he can read different notes.

3. LET THE AUTHOR RESIZE/REPOSITION THE NOTE

Note that I am NOT talking of the window that is used by the author to ENTER the
note. I am talking of the rectangle that appears with the note when the reader
hovers his mouse on the target.

Currently the note cannot be resized/repositioned. This is not very annoying at
present because the notes are added to text only. But when the two suggestions
above are implemented, the notes can get in the way when we want to look at an
image. Therefore, it is good to have a control on how the notes will appear when
the reader hovers his mouse on the target.

P.P.S I used the word 'Sticky Notes" earlier; but I guess the technical word for
it is "annotations". The author should be able to annotate text and/or figures

I have used Acrobat and I find that Sticky Notes are extremely useful to add
extra text that is not visible at first glance. However, a reader can hover his
mouse on the Sticky note icon 9or any other discreet icons) to read such extra
hidden material.

This technique can be exploited to add extra material to a book for advanced
readers. (While the normal reader can just ignore the Sticky Notes, the advanced
readers can read up the Sticky Notes to pick up finer nuances of the subject.)

Currently we need Acrobat to edit an existing pdf file to add Sticky Notes.

My suggestion is that the same code can be added by openOffice while exporting
the odt to pdf. After all, pdf is an open standard.

I have created a sample for this (I exported a file from OOo to pdf and then
added a single Sticky Note using Acrobat.) I am enclosing both pdf files as
sample (one has a Sticky Note, the other is without a Sticky Note.)

Thanks.
***
P.S. The pdf file-structure and code can be viewed and analyzed with pdfedit
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfedit)

This issue is almost two years old. Why should you close it after taking some
unrelated actions (based on the unrelated specs)?

Please let it age if no action is taken on it.
Please do NOT raise other issues based on this issue.

And if it will NOT be closed even after meeting your specs, then why is the
specs document attached here? The specs do not mention either of the two points
suggested here.

It should have been attached to some other (or a new) issue.

How will you close this issue without taking any of the two suggestions?

When using Writer for creating booklets, we have to use the "brochure" style.
However, Writer prints all pages to form a single "signature" (i.e., a stack of
the printed folded sheets.)

But when the number of sheets is large (say 10), they do not fold properly: The
outer pages do not get a crisp fold: They have a rounded fold. Such a book would
look ugly (without crisp corner-edges at the rib), and the binding will not
last.

The only way to create a proper book is to manually print each "signature"
separately and finally stack them together to form a book. This is tedious.

Desired:

Writer should have a built-in facility to print all sheets in terms of
"signatures". (All it would do is to split the print job in batches of x sheets,
where x is the number of sheets in a "signature".)

The number of sheets in each signature can be 20 sheets, or whatever is the
industry-standard in commercial binding. Obviously, the last signature in the
book will have less number of sheets.

Another book-binding style is to fold sheets (each having print of 4 pages in
landscape mode), and then stack these folded sheets to form a book. These books
are sewn/stitched sideways.

Reference on commercial binding styles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_binding#Modern_commercial_binding

I am attaching samples to illustrate my point.

The specs do not include the two suggestions I made for the handout:

1. Pages containing x slides and notes alongside each slide.
2. Pages containing x slides and blank lines alongside each slide.

The first option allows the presenter to prepare his speech verbatim and read it
out from the printed version even as he shows the slides on the screen.

The second option allows the audience to add their own notes.

Well, I have given up trying to recover the document.

I keep saving the document every few minutes, and then take a backup. If there
is a crash, I simply take the latest saved version and start afresh.

I have no idea whether the problem remains in the current version.
Apparently no one has changed the code to address this bug.

Is there a macro to check if there are any dead links?
Then I can scan the document and find the links that are dead now.

Thanks.

In this case, a new proof is given that the file has a problem.
Several OTHER people have also confirmed the problem exists with different
files.

So what's the problem in reopening the issue?
Apparently the earlier solution was not sufficient!

Suppose we agree to what you are saying and want to raise a new issue.
What exactly can we say in that new issue?
The same thing as this bug!

"this bug is almost resolved" is like saying "she is almost pregnant".
It does not make any sense.

raindrops -> the4thchild:

I'm afraid that's not a correct solution in most of the cases:

If we group all the objects, all of them will appear AT ONCE; not in the
sequence we want. The relative motion between different objects will also be
lost.

Currently, we can only insert images in the document. But we cannot export them.

Allow user to export the embedded images in the following ways:

1. Select an image and right-click to select "export..." option.
The image should be saved in its original format (e.g. GIF).
Animation (if any) should be preserved.

2. Provide a "File>Export images" option.
All images in the document should be exported at once in a specified
directory.
Animation (if any) should be preserved.

The writer allows us to insert a gif image. the animation of the image keeps
running.

This is good for an article that illustrates how things work.

However, this also has a problem: The animated GIF is actually a series of still
"slides". The user cannot know which particular "slide" will be printed. Note
that out of all slides, only certain slides would convey what the writer wants
to convey.

But Writer does not have any control to-
(a) Stop the animation (at a particular slide)
(b) Select a particular "slide" for printing.

Note that (a) and (b) are independent of each other: The first is for viewing
only; the second is for printing only.

The best place for these controls is in "Properties" dialog of the image.

Sometimes, it is necessary to copy a sheet multiple times.

For example, first create an empty template on a sheet, copy the sheet multiple
times and then fill individual data in each sheet.

But currently Calc does not have this facility.

It can either insert n new sheets, or insert a sheet from another file.
But it cannot insert n copies of a specified sheet.

See attached sample.

Please provide this facility.

In the context menu, there are some options that have no submenus.
The only thing you see is in gray.

In such case, showing the menu option itself is wasteful. Gray it out.

Example:
1. Insert a shape (e.g. smiley)
2. Select it and r-click. Check out the "alignment" menu. It has no options.
In this case, it would be better to either remove that option or to gray it out.

Raindrops -> Bettina.

I found that Issue 15297 (which is referred to YOU) actually suggests that
Writer's Navigator should automatically take up the filename of the graphic.

The Impress Navigator too must follow the same logic:
1. Provide automatic names to all shapes/graphics; and
2. In case of inserted graphics, put the filename in brackets.

I am raising a separate issue (Issue 80549) for this, as I found no existing
issue for this.

In Impress, picking any individual object is very difficult under some
circumstances. e.g. when the object is almost transparent (see Issue 80387) or
overlapping with other objects, or in a dense cluster.

(Selecting a desired shape by repeatedly pressing TAB is very cumbersome.
Besides, if you want to select several objects together, you cannot use this
method at all. You HAVE to use mouse to pick your objects.)

A far easier method would be to click on the objects listed in the Navigator and
see in the pane to check if we have picked the correct one. If not, just click
again to de-select it. You should be able to use CTRL+click to select several
objects together (to move them together, to group them, etc.)

But the problem here is that the Navigator does not list objects created in
Impress, or objects inserted from outside.

In comparison, Writer's Navigator does list all objects.
In addition, there is a pending proposal (Issue 15297) that in case of inserted
objects, the filename be shown in Navigator.

The Impress Navigator too must follow the same logic:
1. Provide automatic names to all shapes/graphics; and
2. In case of inserted graphics, put the filename in brackets.

OK as long as we get cracking I am ready to call it by any name.
We must not put it in the freezer till Kingdom come just because now it is
called an "enhancement". (I have raised 300+ bugs, so I AM speaking from
experience.)

Raindrops ->Ragina:

Sorry - None of your observations/workarounds make much sense to me.

@transparency by accident:

When created, the rectangles are NOT transparent. The user has to MAKE them
transparent by changing their properties. Such transparent text finds many uses
in animations, where they are usually kept overlapping on some other image.

In short, this is NEVER by accident, but by design.
So Impress MUST be able to handle them.

***
@using TABs to select a image:

Using TAB is absolutely unworkable solution if you are trying to pick more than
one objects (out of several present on the slide). And even if I am trying to
select just one image, why should I go TAB, TAB, TAB, TAB... till I reach the
desired rectangle? I may easily overshoot may target, in which case I may have
to start all over again!

***
@naming objects to see them in Navigator:

Why should we have to name objects just to see them in Navigator? That's
needless hard work! After all, we are not getting any benefits by naming them.

In comparison, in Calc a named range can be used in a formula.
What use does this named rectangle/arrow/image have in Impress?

We are not proposing to turn this into a chess game, are we?
There we have "move White Queen to D4".
Similarly, in Impress we can say "move FIDO (a rectangle that we have lovingly
named) upward by 0.675 cm" :D

OK if you absolutely need the names, let Impress itself provide dummy names.
(Do not ask the users to do this job.)

An example template is-
Image type + sequence of creation.
e.g. rect005, arrow024, etc.

Note that Impress automatically gives (arbitrary) names when we apply custom
animation to any object. Apparently it maintains an internal list. Why not show
it in the Navigator?

Allow user to rename these generic names if he wants. (But I guess that only a
few people would ever want to name their rectangles in this whole wide world.)
