Sorry folks, please excuse if I wasted your time, seems somehow related to my
printer, or the paper I currently use. Have to investigate further.

As with Sun build 2.2 m8 all serif-fonts I've tried (regardless what size)
worked fine (printed 3 times), I tried again with Pavels M9 build.
Printing exactly the same again and again shows quite different results. One
time serif (and sans serif) fonts are perfect, next time(s) I see these
'scratches' again, one time the 'scratches' are in the 'upper half', one time in
the 'under half' of the letters, curiously only with the serife-fonts.
Seems the reproducability I had yesterday was pure coincidence.

I tried today newest build OOo 2.2 m9 (provided by Pavel Janik)on Windows XP.

Several serif-fonts - especially when using small sizes (<10pt., but effect
occurs, depending on font, with e.g. 12pt. too) - show on print a very
unsatisfying result (printer was an inkjet Canon i550). Some characters ( e.g.
H, l, b, t) look like there are 'scratches' around the 'upper half'. 'Small'
characters like uncapitalized o, e, a, s ..., which don't exceed the 'under
half' look better. (sorry I'm not a specialist in typography).

Font's I've tried (I've printed them several times, to be sure it was not
paper/ink or bad moon-jupiter conjunction ...):

Frutiger 47LightCN (Sans-serif, Truetype by Adobe): Fine
DejaVu Sans (Sans-Serif, TrueType, modified Bitstream Vera): Fine
DejaVu Serif (Serif, TrueType, modified Bitstream Vera): Bad
Linux Libertine (Serif, TrueType, by Philipp H. Poll): Bad
Times New Roman (Serif, OpenType, default by Microsoft XP): Bad

With the 'official' M5 build OOo-Dev-ODF680-M5 the extension manager
doesn't crash.
Verified on both my testing machines (Intel Core 2 Duo Workstation, AMD Turion
Notebook, both with WinXP SP2).

As with this build the update-option is also available (contrary to Pavel Janiks
M 4/5 builds) my strong guess: the issue is related to Pavels builds. Curiously
his SRC680-201 build is fine. Maybe something related to M-specific variables in
his build-script. Or should the variing language ('official' builds are only
available in english, Pavel's in german and other languages too) be the cause ?

Maybe somebody informs Pavel Janik ?

In my opinion the issue could be closed. Am I allowed to do so ?

Sorry, when recovering the document after the crash I get only the document and
no crash-reporter at all.

BTW. could it be that something with Pavel Janiks Mn-builds is wrong ? I also
miss in M4 and and M5 the Update-option (which is in his SRC builds).

If there is anything else I can do to track down the issue please tell.
In my work I could (next week) test the builds too on very different machines
(starting from Celeron 450Mhz up to AMD Athlons), but after my test on the
second machine I'm not so sure that it's hardware dependend.

I installed the identical OOo 2.2 M5 (build provided by Pavel Janik) on a second
hardware-different machine, a AMD Turion Notebook with integrated S3 graphics,
this time OOo lands on drive C:. OOo was (on both machines) uninstalled before
installing OOo 2.2 M5.
Same crash happens.
I tried to download svg-import-r2185.uno.zip a-new and to install this download
(on both machines), same crash happens again.

Not to mention that on both OOo 2.1 works fine (with installed svg-filter), also
OOo src680 m201 on the first one.

So what's in common between both (with the possibility to affect OOo) ?

1. Windows XP Home SP2 (latest fixes)(Sorry, I can't disable this ;-)
2. Java 1.6 latest official build (b105), disabling Java in OOo doesn't help.
3. AVG Antivirus 7.5, disabling AVG control Center doesn't help.
4. Rainlendar Calendar in autostart (in one case V 2.02 in the other 0.22.1)
disabling Rainlender doesn't help.
5. OOo 2.2 M5

OOo shutdowns down, and restarts automatically showing the screen to restore the
document (is this the crashreporter ?) telling me that an unexpected error
occured. Thats all.

all. svg filter installs flawless, also extension manger doens't crash when I
try to open it with installed svg filter.

BTW. Installed Java in both scenarios (2.2M4 and src980-m201) was always 1.6.0
build b105, language was always german

All I can tell is that the extension-manger crashed whole Openoffice with the
message, an unexpected error occured ... with installed
svg-import-r2185.uno.zip.

After deleting the profile the extension manager (with no installed extension)
started as expected.

As soon I try to install svg-import-r2185.uno.zip again OOo crashes with an
unexpected error at the end of the installation process, and continues to crash
as soon my mouse-pointer comes only in the near of the extension manager.

I can reproduce this error as often as you want.

Maybe it's specific for my system (which works in ALL other cases and with OO
2.1 perfect, absolutely reliable, no other issues at all). So some basic about
it (which might be the cause): Processor Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 (Dual Processor)
on Asus PB5-E (Intel P965 chipset), 1 Gb Ram, SataII Harddisk, NVidia 7600GS
Graphics with latest driver, Ralink WiFI, System WinXP Home SP2 latest fixes,
nothing special in autostart except Antivirus (AVG) and InCD DVD-RAM Driver.

OOo is always installed on drive d: (not C: !), quick starter isn't installed at
all (on my system OOo starts more than fast enough :-) even without it).

If I can do anything to catch the malfunction better plese tell.

You can try the turboprint printer drivers, they have linux drivers for almost
any canon ink-printer, a demo is available too.

http://www.turboprint.de/english.html

or you may try the original canon-linux drivers

ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/

both drivers worked fine for my Canon Pixus i550 on Suse Linux

>Unfortunately not, they are even more confusing now.

Sorry this was not my intention. Maybe an example would explain things better.
If needed I can scan a page of our publication and attach it as PDF.

>I guess that parts should not start at 1, but use the same numbering as the
>transcript?

No only the parts of the transcripts have linenumbers.

>What if different fonts/fontsizes are used? Then the numbers don'T match again.

Therefore (and for many other reasons due to the transcription system which must
be capable to show overlapping phrases, sometimes four or more persons speak at
the same time, must show pauses, must show turntaking of speeches, must show
prosodic elements like laughing etc) we use for transcripts only monospaced
fonts (preferably lineprinter which is a font built into almost any HP Laserjet
and many others, we have it too as TTF and PS-Font if it's not available with
the used printer) and transcript-width and fontsize is predefined in a way that
it defintely fits on all paper-sizes used for scientific publications (they
luckily don't differ that much). We have a template for transcribers they have
to use.

>Anyway - Instead of opeing the linenumber-menu, open Format|Paragraph→Numbering
>OOo remembers the last tab, so you don't have to switch to the Numbering tab
>manually every time.

I didn't expect anything else ... And I can surely tell you that, after
Wordperfect (which is unfortunately no longer really usable for many reasons),
OOWriter is the first Text-Processor I really like to work with (thats the
reason why I insist) after a long time of trying alternatives.

>This is surely not what the user intended to do. And you cannot make clear in
>the dialog that it is a paragraph property. - But this is how writer works.

Beeing a 'developer' by myself I know that 'things under the hood' are often not
easily to explain to users and that users many times want things which don't fit
in the way the softwore works. But at the same time I've learned (if users only
insisted enough ;-) that things could be solved for the satisfaction of both
(users and developers).

All I (speaking for many) really want is a unified GUI-Element for linenumbering
which doesn't confuse and which covers all available options. Place it wherever
you want, name it like you want, let it work 'under the hood' like you want., I
only ask for minor surface polishment easing the work of users.

Having trained many unexperienced users I've learned that it is hardly to
explain why application XYZ has two dialoges for doing ABC (depending on what
you want to do) residing at different places.
In OOWriter I find myself always pressing F1 to teach myself everytime a-new how
restarting linenumbering works and why I can't find it in \format\numbering
where I expect it.

Thanks for listening.

After more than twenty years of experience with linenumbering, using many
different wordprocessors, I could you describe our workflow with the best
implementation of linenumbering we've discovered until now (it's in
wordperfect).

For publication we have two (written by different persons) textcomponents, one
component is a literal scientific text (with chapters, footnotes, endnotes
etc.), the other are several transcripts from e.g. interviews, groupdiscussions
etc. where linenumbering always starts from 1, font is monospaced etc.

For publication we (and our readers ;-) don't want to have the whole transcripts
in publication (they are simply too long), only parts are used (to document the
empirical backround of the scientifc conclusions, more interested readers always
can afford the whole transcripts).

So we copy and paste into the literal scientific text only parts of the
(linenumbered) transcript(s), assign (via keyboard shortcut) a style to the
pasted component, then we open the linenumbering menue (linenumbering is already
enabled in the style) and tell which number has to be the starting number for
the component. Both steps have to be done whenever you insert another part of an
transcript (otherwise formatting would be wrong and line numbering would start
with the latest manually assigned starting linenumber).

Maybe opinions and habits of layouters/software designers and writers/simple
users are different. But in my (or better our) opinion and long-term experience
all linenumbering options (regardless how they are implemented, regardless what
options do exist) should be grouped.

Having them in \format\paragraph\numbering or having them in \format\numbering
isn't the question (both make sense), but please have only ONE menue point.

So either move the (already existing) numbering options from \format\numbering
to \format\paragraph\numbering, or move (and rename) the 'Numbering Tab' from
\format\paragraph\numbering to \format\numbering.

Or (and this was my idea in my first post) leave everything as it is and
'simply' add a checkbox (start line numbering with) and an entry field (5 digits
should be enough) where the linenumber to start with can be entered in
\format\numbering.

Hope things are clearer now.

Sorry, I don't agree with closing the issue.

My initial post adressed the usability of an already existing feature.

Current implementation is counterproductive.

Why does OO have an linenumbering dialogue when numbering options are
well-hidden in the paragraph menue, where nobody ever assumes then to reside
unless he reads online help ?

And even after reading the online help it seems to me (and some of my customers)
ways more worse than some of your competitors (no I don't mean MS-Word)
implemented it.

In the meanwhile I've tried to open the supplied testfile with different EMF

IExplorer works
Speedcommander works
Nero Cover Designer works
XNview works

OOoffice fails

Unfortunately I don't have more apps beeing able to read EMF (e.g. Photoshop
doesn't). But I guess testing more image viewers won't help here.

Same applies to WinXP (SP2) and to Draw (when using /file/open)

For 2.0.4 IMHO it would be sufficient to disable EMF as supported format.

Issue is confirmed by another user, see

When I try to insert an EMF image via \insert\image\file ... I get only a black
layer, despite EMF is listed as importable format.

Pasting the image to the clipboard (e.g. by using XNView) and inserting via
ctrl.V gives the desired result (image is shown in writer).

Tested only on Windows 2000, so I don't know if other OS are affected too.

Issue 13816 (closed in master m175) adds an option to save / export an image
included in a presentation via the context menu.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a similar patch in writer too ?

The dropdown list is only visible if 'Complex Text Layout' is activated in
'Setup/Language'. Additionally the dropdown list allows only left > right and
right >left. If you activate additionally 'use asian language' you get right >
left (vertikal).

Left > right (vertikal) as proposed is missing.

Both language settings are deactivated by default here in germany

Most users never would see the possibility to change writimg direction, would
never be aware that changing writing direction is possible in OOWriter. IMHO the
Lotus Smartsuite Solution (4 buttons in page setup, accessible by default,
independendly from language settings) is more user friendly. Changing writing
direction for everybody would allow more complex documents (e.g. for brochueres,
flyers).

Another soulution could be that writing in frames allows to set writing
direction.

Naturally I don't insist on 'Buttons'. The dropdown list for everybody and
additionally equipped with left >right (vertikal) would be sufficient too.

In page setup there should be (like in Lotus Wordpro) 4 buttons to define
writing direction. Left > Right, Right > Left, Up > Down, Down > Up

The linenumbering dialogue should have an option to start with an arbitry number
(e.g. 100) like it is possible in wordperfect. The current situation to define
arbitry numbers in the paragraph dialogue is better than nothing, but in many
cases unnecessarily complicate.

This enhancement would be useful if you have (e.g. for publication)citations of
longer (linenumbered) transcriptions
