[sc-issues] [Issue 115842] empty cells should inheri t column, not default, format
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=115842 Issue #|115842 Summary|empty cells should inherit column, not default, format Component|Spreadsheet Version|OOo 3.2.1 Platform|PC URL| OS/Version|All Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|ENHANCEMENT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|editing Assigned to|spreadsheet Reported by|tab --- Additional comments from t...@openoffice.org Tue Nov 30 15:30:28 + 2010 --- in Format.ods, col A has been formated for dates -MM-DD, col B in font CourierNew, number 0.00. Select A3-B3, drag it to A4-B4, leaving A3-B3 blank; enter '9-14' in A3, get '09/14/10' (old format); enter '7' in B3, get '7' in Arial instead of '7.00' in CourierNew. It's understandable --blank cells get the default format-- but annoying in most cases. Suggested enhancement: when a whole column has been formatted (by clicking its header A, B, ..), the format should be inherited by any empty row. The user can always reformat individual cells. The current behaviour could be retained if the special format was applied to a block of cells instead of a whole column. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. OK. Now, select rows bb and cc, insert row: new rows are 1-cm high; why? I expected the format of the 'mother ' rows (bb, cc; 0.45 cm), not the row above, to be copied. 'Squenson' (Forum) replied: 'This is how Excel 2003 behaves.' Flimsy excuse. (If Stupid does it, follow him...) OK, I propose this enhancement: If a block of cells is selected, copy the format above (current behaviour). But, if one (or several) entire 'mother' row is selected, then copy its format into the new row(s). In the case of multiple rows, the individual formats could be reproduced. For example, 3 rows of heights 10mm, 15mm and 8 mm would make 3 new ones of heights 10mm, 15mm and 8 mm. If that's not what's wanted, the current behaviour would still be available. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. This behaviour fits the definition. But it's so counter-intuitive that even a Forum moderator (Hagar de l'est) writes: This is a bug IMHO. It has always existed I think. But 3.2.1 is worse at resetting the defaults of a paragraph. So, there may be an enhancement: reset completely a style by: ** double-clicking the style in the stylist --that's what the average user expects; double-clicking does not imply 'direct formatting only'; ** or by hitting ^m twice: The first time, it just 'removes direct formatting and ...'; the 2nd time, it also resets changes done by styles. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Just a few comments: * The RecentDocuments list merely attaches shortcut keys to files. It does not tell the user to number his/her documents from 0. * Your reference to 'ordinal numbers' was useful. Wikipedia states: 'The finite ordinals (and the finite cardinals) are the natural numbers: 0, 1, 2, …,' Yes: '0' heads the list. *If Bell had numbered the telephone dial from 0, we would not have today different keypads for telephones and calculators or computers. As you know,'0'(not 10) follows the '9' on a telephone; weird math. *The first hour in a day is '0'.If a train is scheduled half an hour after midnight, it leaves at 0:30, not 1:30. *People who celebrated 2000 jan.1 did so 1999 --not 2000-- years after the (supposed) birth of Jesus. Why? because 'they' numbered years from 1, not 0. For the same reason, there are 99 --not 100-- between jan.1, 50 BC and jan.1, 50 AD. *If centuries had been counted from 0, we would have 1975 in century 19, not in the 20th century, and we would now be in century 20 --as expected, in the year 2010. *If OO headings were renamed Heading0...Heading9, one would not have Heading10 between Heading1 and Heading2 in the stylist. *As for OO being 'too technical', well, you cannot please everybody. Not all users are technophobic. If you extended the list beyond 10 files with letters, would people complain that your are numbering in hexadecimal? *Conclusion: I won't reopen the issue; I leave that up to you. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sc-issues] [Issue 2131] RFE: ability to merge cells already merged
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=2131 --- Additional comments from t...@openoffice.org Sun Oct 4 19:44:22 + 2009 --- In MergA.ods, click on (triple) cell A1, copy it (^c), paste it (^v) to A3: get cannot_do_it_msg 'cell merge not possible if cells already merged!' To do the copy, one has to 'unmerge' the cells A3 and C3 (by 'merging' them), then do the copy; Calc should do that, instead of popping the cannot_do_it_msg. Calc also refuses to merge A3 and C3. One has to unmerge them, then highlight A3..D3, click Merge, and answer the_question: 'Should the contents...?'. Again, Calc should do that --including the_question, which should have (beside the Yes/No choice) a Cancel option, in case the user did not foresee the implications of his/her request. In conclusion, the solution to this whole issue seems simple: Calc should do automatically all the necessary 'unmerge', then do the requested operation. (If that gives an unexpected or unwanted result, the user can undo it.) Since all the required steps are already programmed, it should be fairly easy (through a few procedure calls) to substitute them for the cannot_do_it_msg. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. But it's not shown in any way. In fact, the value can be changed or deleted 'by hand'... until the link is updated. For a calculated cell, the input line shows the formula, not its result. For a linked cell, the input line should show the link, so that the user knows the datum was not just entered by hand. In fact, all linked or calculated cells should have a special format, eg, a different colour, because the user does not always look at the input line. OK. 3: insert a row before row 1 in LnkX.ods; now, B1 is blank, and B2=3. Save file. 4: close and reopen LnkY.ods; OO asks: 'update links?'. Click yes. Now, aa=0 because, in LnkX.ods, B1=0, because the reference (in aa=) to cell B1 has not been updated to point to B2. OK; it would be difficult for a formula in LnkY to keep track of changes in another file like LnkX. (In LnkX, zz is still 12 because Calc was smart enough, in the same SS, to change the formula from '=4*B1' to '=4*B2'.) A solution to the above problem would be to assign a variable name such as 'Xa' to cell B1 in LnkX, and to use that name in the aa formula, instead of the cell name B1. Possible formula: aa='file:///C:/Docu.../LnkX.ods'#Xa; Then, Calc would keep track of Xa (eg, when a row in inserted before), and the aa formula would still give the right result. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
