[framework-issues] [Issue 72209] Export to PDF allows a mis leading extension
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=72209 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Oct 3 17:27:24 + 2008 --- Hello @ll, I have tested this issue with 3.0 RC3 under Debian SID AMD64. When I save an odt file as an pdf file (with the automatic name extension unmarked), OOo does not attach any file name extention at all. If I try to save it as an odt file, I get this warning File already exist (or the like. Roughly translated from German). If I click Yes here, the following message says something like Error while saving the document $name: Writing problem. File could not be written. (like before, roughly translated ... ;) ). @smolejv: Could you test it with RC3 under Win XP again, if it is fixed there, too? If so: Could you be so kind to close this issue? TIA Thomas. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. So, perhaps this behavior is acceptable? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. So it describes different problem, only the last comment describes the behavior related to issue 81318. The problem described in issue 81318 is reproducible starting from SRC680/m224, in m223 it is not reproducible. The problem is about suggested file name, that is provided in the dialog in default case ( when user does not deselect any checkbox ). And this is why it is so dangerous, it affects users who use the default settings. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I open an ODTfile.odt in writer. It is an honest-to-goodness ODT file. Can send it in for any distrustful Thomas to check it. 2. I request export as PDF 3. I leave PDF options as are, press Export 4. The Export dialogue appears with Automatic file name extension checked file type is PDF file name is ODTfile.odt (see the screen shot) 5. i override the Overwrite warning and store the file 6. The file stored now under the name is ODTfile.odt - same name as requested, but same extension as well, which is horribly wrong. Hint: I enclose the file (#6). Try to read it with writer first (Fehlanzeige in German). Rename it to PDF and you will be able to see what it is. It is absolutely, undeniably NOT an ODT file. Its two minor releases and app 10 months since I have raised alarm. There's been no change to this subject - except that the Automatic file name extension is now checked, but without avail. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I have automated filename extension *on* in all cases. On XP, - create first PDF in a directory; - the documents name is not suggested; - typing the first letter of the documents name, give the possibility to select the name, including the extension (here the risc to overwrite, since it is not logic that a PDF-file overwrites an odt, that is open) - another odt in the same directory; - create ODF from that correct file name without extension .odt is suggested. Checked on Debian with 2.1. First ODF creating in directory, does suggest the name of the current ODT-file. That makes sence! First I agree with phildetroy: Open .odt should be protected... - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. In a default UI setup the automatic selection checkbox is not (repeat NOT) activated. The user will thus fall into this black hole without doing anything wrong - except if his blue-eyed trust in the system's common sense is seen as a valid user error - I reiterate my (minimal and works-for-me) suggestion: automatic selection checkbox should be checked on installation. If the customer THEN ticks it off and starts saving with wrong extensions, THEN it would make sense to talk about a user error. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. That is why the popup 'Are you sure' box exists and should appear in this case. The file should NOT be overwritten if you select export to PDF as the extension should be .pdf and not .o(xx). We'll have users fall into this black hole again and again. I reiterate: I would feel comfortable, if the installation would have the automated name extension = YES. I would feel comfortabler, if there were no automated name extension check box at all. And if a customer would INSIST on creating a PDF file with ODT extension and screw up his original - well, there's a certain limit to what one can do for people with suicidal tendencies. This limit is VERY limited in the current situation. Where's the catcher in the rye when the customer needs him? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
