Thanks for testing; if you are using Gnome: perhaps you get different results
because Gnome VFS was used on one of your Linux desktops and not the http UCP of
OOo?

Very likely. I've added it to the Red Hat bugzilla:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=480057

and there they said more or less the same.

I did a bit more research, with a few setups:

* WebDAV server (standard Apache setup), without HTTPS and logins
* WebDAV server (standard Apache setup), with HTTPS and logins

I tested a 3.0.1.rc1 version on Windows Vista and had no issues in both cases. I
tested 3.0.0 on Linux (binary build downloaded from OpenOffice.org) and had no
issues. I tried 3.0.0 from Fedora 10 and could not save. So something in Fedora
10 has broken WebDAV support in OpenOffice.org.

I did spot a few other annoyances (lookahead by issuing tons of HEAD requests,
ugh!!), but those are for other bug reports.

Lets see which problems was described here:

1) The main problem: the comment from submitter ( jska ) from Sep 30 18:33:27
+ 2008 explains that GMX client is used during the test to access the file,
the client mounts webdav folder locally. As result the lock file can not be
created because of settings on the webdav server. As I have written already this
is definitely a problem of the GMX webdav server settings.

2) The Windows system file open dialogs can not open directly
https://mediacenter.gmx.net. This is a problem of the system file dialog. It is
also reproducible in older OOo versions ( OOo2.4 ) and has nothing to do with
OOo implementation itself. It is system file dialog the OS is responsible for
its implementation.

3) OOo file dialog can not open the URL ( https://mediacenter.gmx.net ). It can,
and the user will even be asked for authentication. After that there is a
message that there is nothing in / folder, FireFox browser shows exactly the
same message. So it is again no problem of OOo.

As result - this is an invalid bug since it has nothing to do with OOo. These
problems are caused by third party implementations. Although there will be a
workaround for the first problem caused by GMX webdav server settings in OOo3.1
as mba has mentioned.

Based on the arguments above I am closing the issue as invalid, that does not
mean that the discussion is closed. Please correct me if I have
misunderstood/missed one of the mentioned scenarios.

The bug was reported for a special proprietary webdav client and it was tested
as such. But we did tests with direct webdav access also as well as with mounted
folders.

If a problem arises or not very much depends on the configuration of the webdav
server and it doesn't matter how the storage is accessed. The main problem is
that some servers don't accept . at the beginning or ~ inside file names.
Both are parts of the lock files we try to create. In this case a lock file
can't be created and OOo 3.0 does not grant write access (no matter how you
access the storage: with a proprietary client, a windows mount or with http).

This issue should be resolved with the fix for issue 95809 that does not require
the creation of a lock file to allow for write access.

Please reopen this issue, since it is definitely a bug in the WebDAV
implementation in OOo.

mav said: I have mounted the webdav server on the systems as a local volume.

In that case OOo does NOT do WebDAV. The operating system/desktop
system/whatever hides all the WebDAV details for every application (including
OOo) if you mount it as a local volume and OOo never sees anything WebDAV
related, but happily sees the local volume as local (but slow) storage, without
ever using anything from the WebDAV code.

I have tested it with own webdav server from Windows XP, Windows Vista, and
MacOS X. I have mounted the webdav server on the systems as a local volume. From
all the mentioned systems it is possible to open the file for editing from
OOo3.0, and to store it, as well as to store to a new file.

Windows does not allow to create a file with lock file syntax in Explorer, but
it is a feature of Explorer. The Windows API allows to create such file without
problem, since it is a legal file name. It is even possible to save a file with
lock file syntax from Notepad.

Impossibility to create the lock file on the mentioned webdav server looks to be
the problem of the webdav servers configuration and can not be treated as a
problem of OOo.

I am closing the issue as invalid since the problem looks to be a result of
wrong configuration of the webdav server. Please reopen the issue if I
misunderstood something and there is indeed a problem in OOo lock file handling
that causes the scenario to fail.

The problem seems to be the # at the end of the file extension.
For example, on Windows Vista it is not possible to create an empty ASCII file
called .~file.txt# on a webdav folder and it makes no difference whether I
open the webdav folder by this GMX software or by windows (internet) explorer as
a webfolder.
.~file.txt is no problem, but with this # at the end it doesn't work.

Please would you check again, whether it is possible to do this file locking
without the # at the end of the file extension.

Some additional info:

(1) I open the webdav folder: Internet Explorer / Open as webfolder

Now it is not possible to open an OO file called file.ods with write access,
because (I think) OpenOffice is not able to create a lockfile called
.~file.ods#.

(2) I attach this webfolder to a local drive letter

Now, something strange happens.
OO opens this file with write access and creates a lockfile called .~file.ods
without this # at the end.
After closing the file and OpenOffice, this lockfile .~file.ods remains
undeleted in the folder.

The problem is that the GMX Upload Manager application does not support the
syntax used for our lock file.

The mounted mediacenter volume does not allow to create files with '#' and with
'.' at the beginning, although this syntax accepted by all the supported OS. And
the '.' at the beginning of the lock file is very important to let it be treated
as a hidden file on Unix systems.

Even if it was possible to change the syntax of the lock file name, I would not
like to do it in this case since it is an obvious problem of the GMX application
- it does not support the complete set of legal file names.

Closing the bug as invalid, since it is a problem of third party application.

I just want to explain more details regarding the problem.

OOo2.x uses OS file locking, that seems to work OK with the GMX software. The
problem of the system file locking is that it does not behave itself
consistently in heterogeneous network file systems, that is actually a very
common case currently.

So to get rid of the mentioned problem the OOo3.0 uses own lock file to do the
file locking. Unfortunately the syntax of the lock file name is not supported by
the GMX software, although it is pretty correct file name, that is accepted on
all the supported OS ( as I have mentioned in the previous comment ). So the bug
should be fixed in the GMX software from my point of view.

I get a little bit confused. I don't know what webdav client you are talking
about and how this relates to Windows, the Windows file dialog and Webdav in
general.

Please describe exactly how you tried to access webdav folders and what exactly
happened. If you are using the Windows file dialog, OOo does not even know that
it works on a webdav folder. So without a step-to-step description of what you
have done and which software you are using to access the webdav folder we can't
do anything.

OOo has own code to access webdav. Please check how access to the webdav folder
works if you use OOo's own file dialog and enter the URL of your webdav folder
directly.

I try to explain what I'm exactly doing. For I have a german operating system,
I don't know whether I'm using the correct expressions.
The aim is to include an online harddisk that belongs to my mail account as an
own drive within windows explorer. For this purpose my mail provider offers a
special webdav client (called GMX upload manager) to do this.

The software:
http://www.pcwelt.de/downloads/browser_netz/internet-tools/103471/gmx_upload_manager/

What is the GMX Upload Manager:
http://faq.gmx.de/dienste/gmx_upload_manager/1.html (only in german)

OpenOffice 2.4:
I start the UploadManager and the webdav folder will be included as an own drive
within the folder hierarchy of windows explorer. I'm using the windows file
dialog and there are no problems with write access both in Windows XP and
Windows Vista.

OpenOffice 3.0 / Windows Vista:
There is no write access on the folder using the GMX UploadManager, no matter if
I use the windows file dialog or the OpenOffice file dialog.
Now I try to include the webdav folder using windows tools.
Internet Explorer / Open (as webfolder): https://mediacenter.gmx.net (Login +
Password)
Now I assign a drive letter to this webfolder.
OOo is now able to read and write within this folder.

OpenOffice 3.0 / Windows XP:
There is no write access on the folder using the GMX UploadManager, no matter if
I use the windows file dialog or the OpenOffice file dialog.
Now I try to include the webdav folder using windows tools.
Internet Explorer / Open (as webfolder):
https://mediacenter.gmx.net (Login + Password)
Windows XP cannot assign drive letters to such webfolders, but usually it's no
problem to access this folder directly.
Windows file dialog: there is no write access to the folder.
OpenOffice file dialog: you cannot see the webfolder (only local folders).

OK, I see, you are not using webdav but a proprietary client software. IIRC
there is a problem with the GMX client and our new locking procedure.

Mikhail, can you please explain? IIRC we already know a GMX problem.

Normally the webdav folder will be accessed by a special webdav client. With
this client there is no write access to the folder both with Windows XP and
Windows Vista. Opening the folder as a webfolder using windows internet explorer
OOo 3 is able to write within Windows Vista but not within Windows XP.

This looks as a well known problem with the Windows file dialog. Did you try to
open the file with the OOo file dialog?

In Windows XP the OO file dialog shows no web folders (the webdav folder is
located within the network environment), only local folders and files.
But no other software (including OOo 2.4) has any problems with this webdav
client, so there must be some changes in OOo 3.

In OOo 3.0 RC2 files on a webdav folder (https) are opened as readonly. Storing
new files on a webdav folder is not possible (error: no access).
The error occurs both with the windows file dialog and the OO file dialog.
There is no problem with OpenOffice 2.4 and any other program on the system.

A quick test with some in-house didn't reveal any problems in RC2.
Can you give me an accessible webdav server address to reproduce the problem?
