The screenshots in the fourth attachment above were perfect. :)

We look forward to running the localized installer in DEV300_m22, when Pavel
uploads our Windows
build. (He's had problems with Windows builds recently: we didn't get any for
DEV300m19-20, but
DEV300_m21 was OK, so I hope DEV300_m22, will be too.)

If there are any problems with m22, I'll report back, but from the screenshots
above, I don't expect any.

It is a great relief to know we will have a viable localized Windows installer
for OpenOffice.org 3.0
Thankyou all very much! :)

Please tell us when this has been integrated into localized builds, so we can
publicize the improvement.
The lack of a localized installer is unfortunately widely-known as a
disadvantage of OpenOffice.org for
Windows, so as soon as we have a build with the viable installer, we want to
spread the word!

The Vietnamese characters display perfectly! :D

That's the main issue, so it's a great relief to see that works.

However, I noticed a few things:

1. The placeholder for the NSIS version isn't replaced (that may occur at
runtime)

2. Screenshot 2:

(a) The string above the filepath is truncated by the edge of the pane. It
looks like the two strings
under the filepath are also truncated. The English strings would be of a
similar length, so this would
happen to them as well. How does it look in English?

(b) The first string under the filepath says Free space (or similar),
followed by the amount of disk
space, but then another string is squished up against that number, saying Log
the install process (or
similar). Should that be there?

(c) The three buttons at the bottom: the first one has a colon and Complete.
In the NSIS files I
translated, Complete with a preceding colon was a SubCaption. I don't think
that string should be
on the button. Button 2 says part of something about licensing conditions: it
is definitely in the wrong
place. Button 3 says Uninstall, which is correct. I have compared my
translation (again) with the
English files, and I haven't changed anything except the text itself, and the
accelerator keys. Jim, do
you know what might be the problem here? Do any of the accelerators have to be
certain characters,
or be identical to other strings?

3. Screenshot 3 looks fine, except again the first button at the bottom says
Complete with a
preceding colon. I don't think it should have that label.

If we can sort these display problems out, we have a working localized
installer. :)

I would urge you to try the build on my site. I've incorporated Clytie's

all, of the issues will definitely be fixed by the changes I made on the

We cannot use the nsh and nlf file from nsis directly, because we do exchange
some strings for OOo downloads. For example we replace Install by Unpack.
So it seems, there is still a problem with replacement of strings or my unicode
transformations. Looking into the nlf file, I see that InstallBtn is defined
below DontAcceptBtn. But instead of using the content below the line
# ^InstallBtn
the string above this line is used. Therefore there seems to be I do not accept
the terms in the license agreement instead of Unpack.
I attach the file, that is utf16 encoded and already contains all our
replacements. Something seems to be wrong.

Okay. I see. The problem you are seeing is because there was an error in the
NLF file. You can get the one from my build to see the fix or you can apply the
fix yourself.

1. For Font and size, replace Tahoma and 10 with just -
2. Remove the string under Translation by... The translation by is not
supposed to be a string but a *comment* acknowledging the person doing the
translation. So just merge the string into the comment so it reads something
like: #Translation by Dich boy Nhom Viet hoa Phan... immediately followed by
#^Branding

I wrote to Jim about this last night: it looks like there was an item in the
strings where the replacement
wasn't where I thought it should be (comment rather than string), and the font
we usually choose for
Windows (Tahoma 10) was too large. Sorry about that: NLF and NSH aren't
translation formats, and I
haven't worked with them before.

Please take screenshots of the installer with Jim's files, and I'll check them
immediately.

Jim, thanks for the prompt response. :)

is - clytie: Vietnamese is still not supported by NSIS, no nlf and no nsh file.
So we will default to English automatically. Or did I miss something?

NSIS really is a major pain in what I'm sitting on right now. :S

--- Additional comments from jimpark Fri Jun 20 19:10:12 + 2008 ---

You are right in that even in Unicode NSIS, there are no Vietnamese language
files that come prepackaged with NSIS. We will need the localization team to go
through and translate the NSH and NLF files to Vietnamese. Since I don't speak
the language, I can't really help the team. But once the files have been
translated and saved as UTF-16 files, I would appreciate it if those files were
also sent to me so that others using Unicode NSIS can benefit from the
translation work. The same goes for other Unicode only languages that do not
have support in the Unicode NSIS, yet.

Would you please point me to the files which need translating? I can do them
immediately and submit
them for use. We really, really need a working, localized Windows installer for
OOo 3.0, so we're giving
this our top priority.

The files have to be saved as UTF-16? We usually go with UTF-8. If we have to
save as UTF-16, is it
BOM or no BOM?

Jim, once I have access to the files needing translating, I can publicize that
on the OOo and other i18n
lists, to get translations for other languages. I know there are many language
teams which will seize
on this opportunity with great enthusaism: we've all been waiting anxiously for
valid Unicode Windows
installer software.

I created a new perl process, in which utf8 is converted to utf16 and vice
versa. Therefore Unicode NSIS can now be used in packaging process, too. So we
can switch to Unicode NSIS.

Jim Park (www.scratchpaper.com)? The packaging process supports and detects both
versions, the Standard NSIS from Sourceforge that we use today and the
Unicode NSIS from Jim Park.

Using Unicode NSIS causes some changes in our Perl packaging process, because
the nsh and the nlf file, in which we substitute our strings, are UTF-16 encoded
in Unicode NSIS. We would require UTF-8 encoding. So the new process should
convert UTF-16 to UTF-8 (nsh and nlf file), make the exchanges in Perl using our
nsis.ulf (also UTF-8 encoded, not using the nsis.mlf that we use today) and then
convert back the edited nsh and nlf file from UTF-8 to UTF-16.
Unfortunately there seems to be no more time left to implement this changes.
Does anybody know such a converter tool (UTF-16 to UTF-8 to UTF-16), that we can
use on Windows platform (like iconv on Unix) and that would become a
prerequisite for OOo builds?

I've got a program called a2u on my site (http://www.scratchpaper.com/a2u.zip)
which can convert from ANSI codepage encoding to UTF-16. The default codepage
is your system codepage. That would mean that ASCII codes will convert to
Unicode nicely in most if not all codepage settings. To translate to a
different codepage than the default, you can provide as the second parameter the
codepage name e.g. THAI. Just type a2u and you will get a listing of all
the different codepages currently supported. The source is included also so if
you want you can extend it to do the reverse conversion pretty easily.

Notepad.exe can also do the same sort of thing but it requires that the file be
opened and saved with the different formats and it will always assume the system
codepage (which may not be what you want if you are working on the VIETNAMESE
installer on a RUSSIAN codepage system).

I program in Perl, too, but I find the Unicode support in Python to be much
better. You might want to convert your script to using Python instead which
will allow you to directly work with UTF-16 files. I'm not sure how big of a
project that is, though.

[installation-issues] [Issue 84827] Use NSIS Unicode in Window s installer

Unfortunately, the official NSIS distribution does not support Unicode. It is
an ANSI codepage only installer package. My version is the *only* Unicode
version of NSIS there is.

I do not intend to make Unicode NSIS a separate project. I have been closely
tracking the changes in the official NSIS distribution and making parallel
changes in my codebase. I have been publishing source code and have offered it
many times to the NSIS project. However, the project lead for NSIS values
Win98 support as higher priority than support of languages like Vietnamese,
Georgian, many Indic languages, and other Unicode-only languages. He has no
plans to support Unicode in the official NSIS anytime soon. (His words, not
mine.)

Unicode NSIS has been adopted by use by Winamp (the ones who spun off NSIS as
open source in the first place), Mozilla (they release both the ANSI NSIS and
my Unicode version in their development package), flickr (now owned by Yahoo),
and others.

So again, while not the official build, it is the *only* build of Unicode
NSIS. If that makes you uncomfortable, then I guess you will have to wait
until the offical NSIS decides to support your Unicode needs.

We value Unicode support higher than Win 98 in OOo 3.x. So we should prefer
Unicode NSIS, too.
Are the Unicode changes the only changes compared with the standard NSIS code?
And perhaps even more important: Are there any license issues, if we switch to
Unicode NSIS? We would use it for OOo 3.x and for our commercial products.

(Reopening issue and adding it to cws native165).

There should be no issues with using the Unicode NSIS if there were no issues
with the standard NSIS. The license remains unchanged. The Unicode support is
the only real change. As mentioned before, I'm trying to keep the feature set
the same by merging in changes from release to release in the standard NSIS as
such time as when the standard NSIS decides to support Unicode.

If I understand correct, you create your own installer based on NSIS and named
Unicode NSIS (www.scratchpaper.com). That is not what we will use for
OpenOffice.org 3.0. Or do you integrate your changes back to the NSIS that is
available via nsis.sourceforge.net ? In this task we changed from NSIS 2.0.4 to
NSIS 2.3.7, but always using the official builds.

Um, scratchpaper was the URL I supplied in the original issue, because that
_is_ a NSIS package
supporting Unicode.

Does the main NSIS project now have Unicode support? We translators have
lobbied for that for years,
which is why we were all so relieved when Jim put in the time to supply a
version with UTF-8 support.
Please don't demean that effort: it has been valuable to the i18n projects, and
if the main project has
finally moved to support UTF-8, it is likely that Jim's effort helped to prompt
that move.

We would like to test this, too. Please tell me where you are getting a
Vietnamese Windows build for
DEV300_m19. Pavel's server only shows Linux and Mac OSX builds so far. I've
been waiting for the
Windows builds, since nearly all our users are still using Windows.

If you have the Windows installer working in Vietnamese in DEV300_m19, a
screenshot or two would be
reassuring, if you have the time to grab them and upload. :)

Thankyou for all your work on this serious issue, for us. :)

Just wanted to comment that Unicode NSIS 2.37.1 came out which fixes an issue
with the nsExec plugin. But I also had a few questions.

Can you let me know if OpenOffice.org will be using the Unicode NSIS installer?
If so, is it just for the Vietnamese version or will it be for all the
versions? And if OpenOffice does use my project, would they mind if I said so
on my site?

This problem persists in OpenOffice.org 3.0:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/vuhung/2513704032/in/set-72157605189854560/

The phrase pasted onto the screenshot is Not displaying Vietnamese correctly.
As you can see, the
Windows installer screens are completely unreadable. We can't release the
product with an installer like
that. For OpenOffice.org 3.0, we need to either:

1. fix the problem by starting to use NSIS Unicode
2. build the app. with English installer screens until the problem is fixed.

I don't want (2) to be an excuse to put off fixing the problem, because not
having a viable installer
translation is really bad PR for our emerging product, but it would work
temporarily, and we could add
a description of how to get through the English installer to the ReadMe, and to
our website.

Please advise which option is viable for OpenOffice.org 3.0, and how to achieve
it ASAP.

Otherwise, we can't release for Windows. And the vast majority of our userbase
is using (pirated)
Windows.

Clytie, worried.

What does that mean for us? Will 3.0 be released with NSIS Unicode, and thus
display our Installer text
readably, or will you swap the English installer in temporarily?

We need one or the other to happen, or the release is blocked. :(

What's our status on this? Does our Windows installer support UTF-8 yet? This
does not only affect
Win98, the bug reports came from WinXP and Win2000 users.

This bug has been a show-stopper for our builds. That is why we haven't been
able to release a Windows
build since 2.1. We really need this fixed.

Please advise.

is - mh: Martin, we need a decision about a switch to a newer version of nsis.
Technically I have already prepared usage of nsis 2.3.x (at the moment we use
version 2.0.4). But you should take a look at it because of possible legal
issues:

Of course we will try to use the newest version of nsis for OOo 3.0, if we still
use nsis. On the other hand we will have to look for problems with Windows 98
and unicode, if this platform will still be supported.

Although the translation standard is Unicode, and the rest of the
OpenOffice.org strings are Unicode,
the Windows installer is not, because NSIS has not supported Unicode.

This results in showstopper bugs like 81728. Currently, we do not have a
solution to this issue, and
will not be able to release a complete Vietnamese OpenOffice.org Windows build
for 2.4, as we were
unable to do for 2.3.

However, we could avoid this type of issue entirely, and bring the Windows
installer up to
internationalization standard, by using NSIS Unicode instead. Please see the
URL quoted.

I strongly suggest we use NSIS Unicode ASAP. I wish I could help with that, but
unfortunately I can no
longer code, due to illness. However, I can at least make the suggestion.
