On branch cws_src680_localedata3:
i18npool/source/localedata/localedata.cxx 1.29.12.1
i18npool/source/localedata/data/fo_FO.xml 1.1.2.1
i18npool/source/localedata/data/localedata_euro.map 1.9.12.1
i18npool/source/localedata/data/makefile.mk 1.25.12.1

Note that I had to recode the IndexKey data from Latin1 to UTF-8, this was
spotted by a validating parser.

Note also that the LC_FORMAT ref=da_DK .../ did not work as intended,
because Danish was one of the languages that still have localized format code
keywords, in this case 'T' instead of 'H' for the hour key, see also
http://l10n.openoffice.org/i18n_framework/LocaleData.html . So I copied the
da_DK section and adapted keywords and the ID value in the currency formats.
Sorry, I forgot about that, it turned up as some assertions in a non-product
build, like mentioned in the locale.dtd.

Hi Eike,

To sum it up:
attachment id=22725 can be submitted as a valid locale for fo_FO. Attachment
id=22253 is obsolete.
As you said Danish locale should be updated in LC_FORMAT:
LC_FORMAT replaceFrom=[CURRENCY] replaceTo=[$kr-406] and for every
[$kr-406] item.

Thanks.

Next locale in this ol' kingdom will be kl_GL.

Hi Soeren,

Should these be localised? What do they do?
 LC_COLLATION ref=en_US/
 LC_SEARCH ref=en_US/
 LC_TRANSLITERATION ref=en_US/

LC_COLLATION defines the collation algorithm(s) to be used and the
possible transliterations within. The alphanumeric algorithm together
with the IGNORE_CASE transliteration specified in en_US.xml uses the ICU
collation, which is sufficient for most languages and covers Western
languages almost perfectly. You need only to define something different
if for some reasons you need a special treatment, but then also have to
implement an algorithm or provide the collation rule set, like done for
CJK languages.

LC_SEARCH defines the possible transliterations that can be used for
a search. Also here, IGNORE_CASE should be sufficient for Western
languages.

LC_TRANSLITERATION defines the transliteration modules for a language.
Again, for Western languages the IGNORTE_CASE, LOWERCASE_UPPERCASE and
UPPERCASE_LOWERCASE should be all there is to it. CJK languages are more
complicated.

So yes, it should be fine to have them all refer en_US.

@Jacob:
This sounds like transliteration rules (for example from
Greek, Russian or Arabic to Faroese)

No, don't confuse transliteration with translation. Transliteration is
about changing characters (uppercase - lowercase, or other forms)
within one language.

 LC_INDEX is now:
 ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

Good.

 LC_FORMAT is:
 LC_FORMAT ref=da_DK replaceFrom=[CURRENCY] replaceTo=[$kr-438]/

Good.

Should these be localised? What do they do?
 LC_COLLATION ref=en_US/

This is the sorting rules. They are described in the attachment
fo_FO-collate.html.

 LC_SEARCH ref=en_US/

This one I can't guess the exact meaning of.

 LC_TRANSLITERATION ref=en_US/

This sounds like transliteration rules (for example from
Greek, Russian or Arabic to Faroese). I think the best
choice - until I can get my hands on whatever rules the
linguists at the university have written down - is to refer
to nn_NO.

Jacob (brugernavn)

PS: As a language, Faroese is closest to Icelandic, but
formal rules (like currency, phone numbers, addresses)
are generally like in Denmark.

PPS: The Danish transliteration rules are definitely
 different from the American ones.

Soeren,

Yes, it is possible to refer da_DK data, please use the line

LC_FORMAT ref=da_DK replaceFrom=[CURRENCY] replaceTo=[$kr-438]/

To make this work I'll have to change the da_DK.xml data to
LC_FORMAT replaceFrom=[CURRENCY] replaceTo=[$kr-406]
and replace [$kr-406] in the format codes with [CURRENCY]. That's easily done.

Please attach a new data file to make sure that we won't have encoding issues
with the IndexKey data when copied from the browser's clipboard.

Thanks

Hi Soeren,

There is a difference between the exemplar characters and the index key
characters of the LC_INDEX section. Exemplar characters are the
characters a language consists of, according to your description it
seems that the CLDR definition is wrong in this regard, and you could
file a bug against the CLDR, see
http://www.unicode.org/cldr/filing_bug_reports.html
and include the omniglot.com reference in the description. However, what
makes me wonder a bit is, on that page the 'c' is not included in the
alphabet, but is included in the pronunciation of consonants.

The LC_INDEX index key characters define the order in which entries are
sorted in index pages you can generate in the Writer application.
Characters not mentioned there are sorted to the end in Unicode order.
Now it depends how characters not present in the Faroese language, like
'c' for example or other Latin characters in this case, should be sorted
in an index page. Are they expected to appear in between the known
Faroese characters, like they would with [a-z], do they have
special positions, or are they simply appended, as it would happen with
[abdefghijklmnoprstuvy].

Btw: it's not over and under, but above and below instead, which
can make a difference. The expressions are used in the Writer when
referring other positions above or below a text, see menu
Insert.Fields.Other.References Set Reference/Insert Reference.

Eike

Hi Eike,

Regarding LC_INDEX:

To be honest I don't know how I should define the alphabet. According to this
page http://www.omniglot.com/writing/faroese.htm several letters in the reg.
exp. a-z doesn't exist in the faroese alphabet.

However, this locale from CLDR 1.3alpha
http://oss.software.ibm.com/cvs/icu/~checkout~/locale/common/main/fo.xml has a
tag exemplarCharacters[a-z]/exemplarCharacters.

Should we go with [a-z] or define the complete set
[abdefghijklmnoprstuvy]

Reminder to self: find translation for over and under.

Soeren,

You can keep the ref=en_US, it isn't necessary to change them to da_DK. I just
thought that the Faroese locale (not the language) resembles more da_DK than
en_US, but of course I'm blatant ignorant in this regard. Using en_US instead
of da_DK seems to be a political decision in this case?
Anyway, a corrected LC_INDEX section will be good.

After reading your feedback I will update the locale shortly (LC_INDEX).

The tags with ref=en_US is the exact same as in the danish locale because
fo_FO.xml is more or less an adjusted copy of da_DK.xml. Do you recommend
setting ref=en_US to ref=da_DK anyway? I think some faroese people would
rather refer to ref=en_US than ref=da_DK.

Hi Soeren,

Should do (except that 406 would become some new to be defined language ID
instead), I only would change some of it to use more the ref=da_DK mechanism.
But shouldn't the LC_INDEX section resemble more the one of da_DK, instead of
mentioning only ASCII letters and being more or less en_US?
