To modify existing instances: Find and Replace - Select *Search for Styles*, - select desired style - modify it using the toolbars. To modify the style: I then have to open and modify the style separately. In the styles window right click desired style - modify. This is a problem for the user not only because the process is complicated, but modifying styles using the toolbar is difficult and limited. This is a function user use often, and should be available. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I described why the current process is complicated in the original report. This is a general process that applies to every document. I have nothing to attach for you. I suggest two solutions: Solution A: 1. Select a style from the styles Window (or from the style box in the toolbar). 2. Right click and select select all instances All instances of this style are selected (highlighted) in document. 3. The user can then right click the style and select modify. Changes will be applied to all selected instances. *ALTERNATELY* Solution B: In the window where you modify a style, there could be a button that says apply to all, which modifies all existing instances of the style. note: Windows uses A) and users are probably more familiar with it and has other possible applications (replacing one style with another, for example). B is more elegant. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Which version of OOo are you using? There is no select all instances in the UI. A *style* (in the meaning of template) per se applies to all occurences of the text which uses it. Solution A already exists: Modifying a style using F11 (Styles Formatting dialog) will apply directly to the whole text having this style *without having to select it*. Solution B acan be covered by: right click ion a paragraph and choose Edit Paragraph Style - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. When you say style do you mean paragraph styles like Heading 1, Text body, Hanging Indent, assigned from the Styles and Formatting-window or the drop down list? Or do you mean character styles like Emphasis or Teletype, also assigned from the Styles and Formatting-window? Or do you mean an attribute assigned by clicking on a button in the Formatting-toolbar? If you mean a paragraph style, then click on Edit Paragraph Style in the context menu of one instance which uses that style. Or, which works for character styles too, open the Styles and Formatting-window, right-click the style and choose Modify. It is the essential of styles, that changing the settings in a style will effect _all_ instances, which uses this style. If you like to make the changes via the buttons in the Formatting-toolbar, then use the item Update style in the Styles and Formatting-window to transfer those hard formattings to the style. Modifying a style in the styles window does create a universal change. Here's where the problem was: In the styles and formatting window: 1. I have one field highlighted *Heading 1* 2. I right click over *Body* and select *Modify* 3. I expected the styled editor window for *Body* to open. However, the style editor window for *Heading 1* opens, because that style is highlighted. If I click anywhere in the field, the selected (highlighted) item opens for modification. I would normally expect the item I click over to open. This made me think my changes were not being applied. This is an unusual way for a user interface to work and users may not understand it (I work in RD and I didn't catch it, just thought it was a bug) Another note: Many of your users will be coming from Windows, which doesn't automatically apply style changes to the whole document. I was looking for a specific functionality that does this. I think your solution is better, but may not be obvious. Maybe the button in the window where you modify a style should say Apply Changes instead of OK to avoid confusion. Regina: thanks for the explanation. I mean modifying template styles that from the Styles and Formatting window. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
